The Washington Monument is reopening, as you see. Al is there to cover it live and take us inside. Lets start, though, with this mornings top story. Weve got breaking news tied to the kidnappings of hundreds of schoolgirls in nigeria. The terror group behind those kidnappings making new demands in a new video. Nbcs Stephanie Gosk has the latest on this. Steph, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, matt. Well, this is essentially a hostage video with prove of life for the hostage takers. It was obtained by the French Press Agency and they released it. It shows as many as 100 of the girls sitting in muslim dress and reciting a prayer. They are reciting this from the koran. This video was obtained by the french press. The school girls have converted to islam and they wont be let go unless his fighters are released from nigeria. The group has been fighting for five years. One of the worst recent attacks killed five people on the nigerian capital. The same day the school girls were kidnapped. This video will provide a sliver of hope for the families, but provide pressure on the Nigerian Government which is criticized for the way they handled the crisis. Matt. Stephanie gosk on the story. Just seeing hundreds of these girls, or about 100 of these girls still together, a hopeful sign in some sense to you . Because it seems a rescue might be more feasible . I think it is. They easily could have been spread out in very small groups. A rescue is always going to be very, very difficult. Its an extremely remote area. Nigerians have not in the past taken a lot of assistance from the United States, so that they are in one group makes it more possible. I wouldnt underplay how hard it will be for either the nigerians alone or even with u. S. Assistance. Lets talk about these demands that the group is making, that some of the boko haram prisoners be released in exchange for the release of the girls. As you know better than others, the general rule is you dont negotiate with terrorists, but does that calculus change at all when youre talking about hundreds of little girls . It may, but my sense is that president jonathan of nigeria is not someone likely to negotiate with boko haram. Boko haram has long been very interested in people who have been taken prisoners. Theyve had a number of attacks on prisons and released probably more than a thousand of their members over the past several years. So this is very much consistent with the groups goals, and given the level of aggression that the Nigerian Government has used when capturing boko haram, i still think its unlikely that any release is forthcoming. Severe storms that are impacting millions of people all across the country. Everything from tornados in the midwest to heavy snow in colorado. Just when you thought you could put away the winter coats for good, parts of the rockies hit hard by a snow storm. Parts of the midwest were hit with tornadoes. Uhoh, there they go. There they go. A frightening scene in nebraska overnight as tornado force winds brought power lines crashing down and ripping apart a farmhouse. Im about two blocks up from here and i took the warning and got in my basement like most people should have. Debris scattered throughout the downtown sutton, nebraska, area after businesses took a direct hit, miraculously only one minor injury was reported. In skyline, nebraska, residents emerging from basements and shelters, found trees down on homes and cars. Its stressful. How are you going to get to work . At least its the best case scenario. Nobodys hurt. We moved from california to here. We are not used to this. These dramatic images of the storm were taken by an Airline Passenger leaving omaha. Large tornado on the ground causing damage. The roofs are going across the top of the buildings right now. A different storm here in colorado. Snow. Mothers day temps hovered just above freezing with winds and heavy precipitation pelting the denver area and dumping up to almost four inches of fresh snow. Now in some of the Higher Elevations in wyoming and colorado, they picked up more than a foot of snow. By the time we get to friday, it will be well into the 70s. All of this will melt away. Reporter the League Commissioner moved quickly to force him to sell his team, and today says if three quarters of nba owners agree, Shelly Sterling is out, too. But she says shell fight to keep her 50 stake. Ive been with the team for 33 years. Through the good times and the bad times. Reporter often courtside together before the controversy, even spotted having dinner after it, Shelly Sterling says shes prepared to officially split from her husband. Louis rams selected michael sam, creating a moment many thought was worth the wait. The st. Louis rams select michael sam, defensive end, missouri. Michael sam reporter sam, who came out publicly in february, is a former standout defensive end for the university of missouri. He talked to reporters by phone. Im overwhelmed. Im excited. The white house said, the president congratulates michael sam, the rams and the nfl for taking an important step forward in our nations journey. But not everyone is happy. Don jones of the Miami Dolphins tweeted omg, and horrible. Jones deleted the tweets and apologized but the dolphins quickly fined the secondyear player an undisclosed amount and suspended him until he completes sensitivity training. There are are a lot of firstro draft choice, highly touted guys that didnt make it. Despite all the overanalysis that defies parity that surrounds the nfl draft. Think about this tom brady was like the 200th player selected. Peyton manning was selected right at the top of the draft. Theyre the two best quarterbacks of the generation. Its at best educated guess work. In your opinion, the reception from most of the players will be favorable, from the coaches, from the press as well. You think michael sams biggest problem is going to be social media. He should stay away from it because 1 of the people can make a whole lot of noise on social media. We should stipulate a lot of good things can happen on social media, can aggregate people for good causes and awareness. But at the same time, every creep and creaton on the planet can weigh in on every subject and every person, so he ought to stay away from that because it will not reflect how most people feel. The big picture here in terms of the nfl, is this a change or a oneoff . Is this the league moving to the right side of history . Which they cant do unless more players come forward. I think more players will come forward. No matter what kind of nfl career he has is a significant figure. Just like jason collins, who hasnt played a minute in the playoffs for the nets, but nonetheless hes a significant figure in the nba. This stuff is moving at warp speed. This kind of acceptance is happening quicker than any of us might have thought, so i think the nfl is just getting in line with whats happening in society overall. I got you in the chair, so let me ask you about Donald Sterling, now speaking out, his wife speaking out as well. Mr. Sterling says this in an interview. When i listen to that tape, i dont even know how i can say things like that. I dont know why the girl had me say those things. And he goes on to say, am i entitled to one mistake . Am i after 35 years . Did he help or hurt himself . Pretty hard to hurt himself at this point. The league going to change its mind in any way . No, the leagues not going to change its mind about Donald Sterling. You and i possibly arent qualified to get into all the possible things that could happen with Shelly Sterling in litigation, that could get difficult, but Donald Sterling is out. Yeah, im still trying to figure out how the girl had me say those things. And if it was only his only mistake, egregious as it is, that would be a different thing. But Donald Sterling has a bit of a track record. Very quickly, michael sam is in a good spot in st. Louis because he played at missouri. There were never any problems there with college kids, college coaches. And the head coach of the rams is very, very enlightened on this whole thing, jeff fisher, and one of the most respected figures in the league. Hell set a tone. Prorussian separatists are claiming victory this morning after controversial referendums in two Eastern Ukraine regions. They say most of their citizens have voted for sovereignty. Nbcs Richard Engel is in ukraine with the latest. Richard, good morning. Reporter good morning, natalie. I think this referendum shows how divided ukraine has become. We are in the Southern City of mariupol and voting took place here in other parts of southern and Eastern Ukraine yesterday and this city has already been taken over by prorussian separatists. They are the ones operating checkpoints in the city. They have armed patrols. Official government ukrainian troops only operate around the edges of the city. And it was here that this voting took place. There was no transparency. There were no international monitors. The organizers say that about 90 of the people who voted want to break away from ukraine, but the Ukrainian Government certainly isnt recognizing this. Washington says it wont recognize the results, but moscow, however, says it will. All right, Richard Engel in ukraine, thank you. Some harsh words from a south korean official this morning aimed at their neighbors to the north. The spokesman for the south Korean Defense ministry questioned whether north korea is even a real country, and then asked, doesnt it exist for the benefit of only one person, a reference to dictator kim jongun. He went on to say, it must disappear soon. Back here closer to home, Virginia Police say they have found the body of the third victim in the hot air balloon that crashed friday. The balloon hit a power line and burst into flames. Two members of the university of Richmond Womens Basketball Program were among those aboard. They were the director of basketball operations natalie lewis, and associate head coach ginny doyle. The pilot daniel kirk was also killed in the crash. And an ohio woman gets a mothers day present unlike any other. Were seeing dozens of those missing schoolgirls in a brandnew video coming from nigeria. This has been released by their captors. The groups leader claims he will release the girls in exchange for prisoners tied to his terror group. In other news, were tracking the threat of more Severe Weather from a system that has already produced damaging tornados in nebraska and missouri. Meantime, a Winter Weather alert is in effect for parts of colorado and wyoming today. Some areas have already received more than a foot of snow. And in a new interview, Shelly Sterling, the wife of clippers owner Donald Sterling is renewing her vow to fight to keep that team. But the nba says if her husbands ownership is terminated, according to its constitution, that would not be possible. The Oscar Pistorius defense team calling their final witnesses right now. Including a psychiatrist, on the stand this morning, delving into his personal life, his mental history, calling pistorius distrustful and isolated, even diagnosing him with anxiety disorder. Oscar pistorius looking down in court today as his childhood was pulled apart. An absentee father, a mother who abused alcohol and slept with a gun under her pillow. And as a baby, the surgery to amputate his legs described as traumatic. The children were reared to see their external environment as threatening. Reporter the defense psychiatrist testifying that all of it contributed to the shooting that ended reeva steenkamps life. Why pistorius was so scared of a possible intruder. It is my opinion, my lady, that mr. Pistorius has an anxiety disorder. He was aware that he was a public figure and believed that this made him at an increased risk of being attacked or burgled. Reporter in these final days of testimony, of course all the focus is on Oscar Pistorius, but lets think about what this is really about. Its about reeva. Do you have anything to say to reevas parents, oscar . All they really want is to find out what happened that night. Maybe he made a mistake. Its a huge mistake. Its cost her her life and hes got to take responsibility for that. No matter what the outcome is. Reporter today, reevas parents keep her room as a shrine. Inside, paintings reeva made when she was only 15 years old. Did she predict her own death . Heres reeva. Here in a field next door is a man with a gun. And hes standing under a tree. Right there in the front row to watch all this go down. Getting back to that defense psychiatrist just for a moment, who diagnosed pistorius with anxiety disorder. Now the prosecutor is objecting, saying he doesnt want to just take her word for it. He may want pistorius to get an official mental evaluation in a hospital. The judge has yet to yule rule that. Here in our Nations Capital. Much of the northeast, its going to be a little on the toasty side. Look at these temperatures. Were looking at temperatures that will be anywhere from five to ten degrees above normal as we get that return flow of air coming up. 13 degrees above normal in new york city. 87 in washington. Pittsburgh, youre going to see 82 degrees. Head down to the south, look at these temperatures flirting with the upper 70s into the mid to upper 80s. 90 as you make your way into nashville. Out west, weve got much cooler conditions. As you can see in the rockies, central plains, temperatures anywhere from ten to 20 to 30 degrees below normal. But as you continue out west along the coast, we may be looking at santa ana winds kicking up. Weve got red flag warnings from santa clara all the way to san diego. Hot and dry santa ana winds. Record heat. Critical fire danger is going to be a big problem. Those wind speeds will start kick up and thats going to fan any wildfires that kick up, so well co im meteorologist christina l loren taking a look at clear skies over San Francisco. Still getting a little bit of the marine influence but that will reverse as we head throughout the day today and temperatures will soar as a result. 88 degrees in the south bay and 86 for the peninsula and 89 degrees in the east bay for today and San Francisco at 76 degrees. The Company Announcing it will be issuing refunds, after settling a 3. 75 million class action lawsuit. Accusing the company of using deceptive advertising by claiming the shoes could strengthen muscles, help with agility. Even align the spine. They say that they were supposed to be better for your feet. They actually hurt my feet a little bit. Reporter so those who bought a pair will be able to gate partial refund of their 100 price tag, likely between 20 and 50. Its not the first time a shoe companys been forced to foot a big bill. In 2012, the ftc sued skechers over claims its shapeup shoes led to toned muscles. The company settled for 40 million. Reebok refunded 25 million for making similar claims about its easy tone line. Both companies denied any wrong doing. But in vibrams case, barefoot runner john durant says its all about conditioning. People treated five fingers like they were a silver bullet. The reality is they needed to transition slowly over a period of months or years to strengthen their feet. Reporter still, the settlement prohibits the company from saying the shoes can strengthen muscles or prevent injury without scientific evidence. At its base, it was rocked where the walls are 15 feet thick. But you get up to the top, its only seven inches thick and thats where most of the damage occurred. The Washington Monument is back. The obelisk was shaken from its base to its top back in august 2011 when a 5. 8 magnitude earthquake jolted sight seers and violently shook the monument. Debris fell. A big crack allowing daylight to come in. And water pelting the interior stairs. A long, slow road to recovery began. Specially designed scaffolding enveloped the monument, shrouding it from view. The repairs came with a hefty price tag. 15 million. Half of it contributed by billionaire philanthropist and history buff david rubenstein. What is it going to mean to america to get this back . The Washington Monument i think is really a center point for this country and americans, but all people all over the world. I visited the monument last week and got a behindthescenes tour of the work. Now you guys after the earthquake, you had to inspect every sewn. Upwards of 9,500 stones . Thats correct, on the exterior. And about 10,000 stones on the interior, all individually inspected. Wow. Thats amazing. Most of the damage was at the very, very top, the pyramidian where it starts to turn. And thats the challenge in getting all the way up to the top of it. Now were going to go inside . Its a swift 77second elevator ride to the top. Weve worked on restructuring the elevator and its been certified to be safe before opening it up to the public. Thats good to know. Since were in it. Absolutely. Right here you can see one of the large cracks. There are numerous cracks throughout this pyramidian area. And this is one that you can see all the way through to daylight. Does it still take your breath away when you look out the window and see these views . It does. Its an incredible view. Back down on the ground, final touches were under way. Were told these are the prayers that a convert would learn upon being converted. Later on, theres a message in the video from the leader of boko haram himself. Hes not actually shown with the girls, and his message is that hes willing to bargain. Hes willing to trade the girls in exchange for prisoners of his group that are being held around nigeria. He also says that he has converted his hostages to islam. Now, this will certainly provide a sliver of relief for some of these families but it is going to ratchet up the pressure on the Nigerian Government that has been widely criticized in these four weeks since this abduction occurred. Coming up next, the journalist who broke the nsa leak story, he is with us, but first this is today on nbc. Its been nearly a year since Edward Snowden leaked classified nsa documents to reporters, triggering a worldwide debate on u. S. Surveillance programs. Now, glenn greenwald, one of the journalists who broke that story, is writing a book about what took place behind the scenes in the days leading up to and following those bombshell disclosures. Its called no place to hide. We should note that nbc news has a Collaboration Agreement with First Look Media where greenwald works as a contributor. Got that out of the way. Glenn, nice to see you. Great to be here. When you First Published your story, you had the advantage of being able to watch Edward Snowden closely as he watched the reaction. What was he like . Was he nervous . Was he anxious . What was his reaction . It was incredible. He was never nervous. Which was one of the most striking things to me. He had such conviction that what he was doing was the right thing that it was very much at peace. One thing he was a little bit anxious about was how the world was going to react, whether theyd be interested. To watch this worldwide explosion was very grt ifatifyio him. In your book, you write about there being tension in your first meeting but that your relationship grew into one of collaboration and trust. There was humor at one point as you were starting to figure out what you were going to release. He said, i call the bottom bunk at gitmo. When you discuss certain elements of articles, he would say, thats going into the indictment. The only question is whether its going into yours or mine. So how nervous were you . We all knew that this was going to be one of the most significant things we ever did in our lives, if not the most significant. When youre releasing enormous amounts of classified information, you know there are all kinds of risks. And we were definitely aware of those. And you pressed him for a reason. You wanted a motive. You wanted to make sure he was having a rational thought process, and he said the true measurement of a persons worth isnt what they say they believe in, but what they do in defense of those believes. If youre not acting on your believes, then they probably arent real. Did terms Like National security and treason and prison come up during your initial discussions . Of course. He knew what the risks were. But this is to me the most extraordinary aspect of the personal part of this story, which is a 29yearold, not for any personal gain, he could have sold these documents when you first met him, you expected to see a much older guy. Yeah. He was this young kid, he was 29 but looked younger. Knowingly sacrificed his entire life to bring information to his fellow citizens. That is an straextraordinary st. Did he think he was a threat to National Security . Did he know he would go to prison if he ended up being caught . The u. S. Government tries to put people in prison every time they bring unwanted transparency to politicians. He wanted to inform the world what was being done by the u. S. Government, but wanted it done carefully, which is why he came to journalists. You release new documents, even more in your book. Absolutely. Let me put this in a weird way. Since you know how much he has, youre aware of it, if this is the gas tank on your car, glenn, is it still full . Is it half empty . Is it near empty . I would say its about half. You know, a lot of the stories that remain to be told are very complicated. They take a lot of reporting, but there are some huge stories that are left, and obviously i think there are some huge new stories in the book as well. Hes got temporary asylum in russia, a country known for its intrusive surveillance techniques against its own citizens. Criticized for human rights violations. How does he square this . I know he asked president putin about this at a press event. A lot of people felt it was staged. How does he square his host country with the believes he holds so dear . He wrote an oped the day after he asked president putin about russian surveillance, saying that the president was probably not telling the truth and we need an investigation. But this is the key point, he didnt choose to be in russia. He was trying to get through russia to get to latin america to seek asylum. The u. S. Government revoked his passport, pressured other countries. So to me the question is why do we put whistleblowers in prison . But there is still a question, and i know hes addressed this and i think you have as well there. Are people who just cant accept the idea that he hasnt turned something over to the russians in exchange for that temporary asylum. Because he was running out of options, as you mentioned. That he didnt give the russians some of this information. And hes got methods, intelligence personnel, internal operations. He acknowledged to you that he has access to the full rosters of anyone working at the nsa. Are you going to tell me putin didnt ask for that before granting asylum . Anyone can make up any accusation that they want and rational people demand evidence before they believe it, which is the lesson that we ought to have learned from the claims from government officials that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction. Theres zero evidence that he did any such thing. Hes somebody willing to go to prison for the rest of his life to stop surveillance. The last thing he would have done and did do is cooperate with a foreign government. And his point is by the time he got to russia, he didnt have any evidence. Exactly. In the book, you write that snowden told you, i only have one fear in doing all of this, that people will see these documents and shrug. The only thing im worried about is that ill do all this to my life for nothing. Where do you think he stands on that right now . I think the debate around the world, not just in the United States, has been far beyond anything that either of us expected could even in our wildest dreams have had. We were back in hong kong, hes incredibly gratified. I feel like the world reaction has been immense and there will be very serious changes in how people think about all these issues for years to come. Glenn greenwald, thank you very much. Thank you for bringing some of your most terrifying friends. Lets talk about the series. Youre one of the judges. This kind of lifts the veil on the creature making process, the puppet making process. Which is normally rather secretive, isnt it . Well, yeah. These artists normally when theyre building a creature, its exactly at the time that it needs to be kept secret, because nobody wants to show how its done before it comes out. And were a fantasy company, so doing a reality series doesnt really make sense. You would think. But for years, ive been thinking that the coolest artists we have in the company are the ones that design and create these creatures. And creatures are different than puppets. Yes. Tell us the distinction. Basically, we do a lot of puppets and puppets are like the muppets. With puppets, you know theyre felt and pingpong balls and fur fabric. You know theyre inanimate. And then you bring them to life through puppetry and thats fun and entertaining. Creatures are different. And a lot of people call this art form animatronics as well because theyre meant to look like theyre alive. Theyre meant to look like theyre living, and then we still bring them to life with the same puppetry technique. You bought your purple people eaters. For him to work, he takes six puppeteers who have to work together. And there will be a pair working the feet, one on each arm, one on the wings. This is actually it is partially a hand puppet because there will be one puppeteer that reaches in in the back to work the head. This is a puppet where the puppeteers are standing immediately around it and then you remove them. You dress them in green and remove them. You can see theres some i thought he winked at me earlier. These are some of the mechanisms in him are radio controlled. Wow. And some of them would be cable controlled. Hes got very complicated hands that fully work and stuff here. And like i said, to fully operate, this would take six puppeteers to do and theyd be standing all around him. Tell me about his friend over here. If you touch him, the skin is so lifelike. Well, these were the skin is a foam latex. A creature like this would be fully sculpted, so a sculptor would sculpt the entire thing and wed mold the whole thing. This is a simpler creature than that one. This is worked by puppeteers working underneath. One reaching into the hands and one reaching into the head from underneath. Hes got a relatively simple mechanism here. All tlhree of these were built y our creature shop in less than three weeks. They sort of got all charged up by the show. Does this lend itself to a reality competition . This is an incredible feat of engineering and creativity. Its pretty amazing. These are the artists that are almost like magicians. What they are doing is magical. They can literally start by sketching, and then they can do the sculpting and then they have to do their own mechanizing. And they have to do their own painting and finishing to bring the whole illusion to life. I only have about 20 seconds left, but we cant leave out this guy. This little guy was this ones basically a rod puppet, so the puppeteers would be underneath and these are all very complex. Basically rods underneath there and cable controls and radio control. And then some of the mechanisms here would work his face here. Face only a mother could love. This was really the cutest one. The oneeyed, onehorned, flying purple people eater. The you think your dad would like to see where creativity has gone, where his profession has gone . Yeah. He used to love showing how we do the stuff. Its really cool to see. I made a mistake and im apologizing and im asking for forgiveness. Am i entitled to one mistake after 35 years . I mean, i love my league. I love my partners. Am i entitled to one mistake . Its a terrible mistake and ill never do it again. Anderson asked him, if youre so contrite and so sorry, why did it take this long for you to come out and admit that it was a mistake . He said well, i was just so thrown off by this whole thing. It hurt me so badly that i didnt know what to say. Now hes come out, Anderson Cooper speaking to him for the first time. Donald sterling also talking about one of the guys who got this whole thing started. Remember his acquaintance, or his girlfriend, whatever she was, v. Stiviano posted a picture to instagram at a Los Angeles Dodgers game of her with Magic Johnson and that prompted some of these recorded comments that we heard specifically about magic as well. Heres sterling talking about Magic Johnson. Did you apologize to him . Well, if i said anything wrong, im sorry. Hes a good person, and he what am i going to say . Has he done everything he can do to help minorities . I dont think so. But ill say it, you know, hes great. But i just dont think he is a good example for the children of los angeles. Wow. Powerful words. Fighting words. That shows complete ignorance about Magic Johnson, above all else. Complete ignorance. And then it gets even worse because he also said in the same interview, when i listen to that tape, i dont even know how i can say words like that, i dont know why the girl had me say those things, implying that this was coming from v. Stiviano. I guess he was saying he felt like he was sort of baited in the whole thing and the conversation was recorded. But come on, you know what you said. Now it sounds like hes even denying that he remembers even saying all of this. He says hes sorry. He doesnt sound terribly sorry. He sounds frankly a little unhinged from reality. Google Magic Johnson, what hes done with his life since basketball and i think you might take that statement back as well. Meanwhile, sterlings estranged wife shelly told Barbara Walters she doesnt think her husband is a racist. I have never heard him say racial things. I dont know it was horrible when i heard it. I mean, it was just degrading. And it made me sick to hear it. But as far as a racist, i dont really think he is a racist. Shelly sterling also telling Barbara Walters she thinks her husband is suffering what she says is the onset of dementia. Thats her view of it. Shelly also revealed she recently signed a divorce petition, and plans, as we reported last week, the fight to keep her 50 ownership of the team, even if her husband is forced to sell. You know by now three quarters of the nba owners would have to vote to oust the sterilings as owners. Lebron james came out this weekend and said we dont want any sterlings. No member of the family should be involved in this franchise. Which i think that says a lot. Lebron james one of the foremost players in the nba, and, you know, really you have to start clean with this team. Yeah, but shelly has given every indication shes not going to go down without a fight. So this will be very interesting. Its going to be an interesting legal battle. Another moment that i think a lot of people are talking about in the world of sports, and a great moment, a historic moment in the nfl on saturday, michael sam became the first openly gay athlete to be drafted. The former defensive end of the university of missouri selected by the st. Louis rams in the seventh round. I believe the 249th draft pick. 31 other teams passed on him. Finally the st. Louis rams making it official. Sam shared the special moment with his boyfriend with that kiss. There were in that moment over 330,000 tweets mentioning sams name on saturday. Many of them positive. And of course, some negative, as you would expect as well. Of course. Still very divided nation. Take a big enough sample set, there will be a few people out there. If you looked at the nfl draft, there were two things people cared about, wheres Johnny Manziel going to go, and once he got picked, it was will michael sam be drafted. He was drafted i think with only six picks left in the draft. It was touch and go for a why. People were wondering is he not going to get picked. So hes drafted, but its not a sure thing that hell make the team, regardle lesike all the o. He was the s. E. C. Defensive player of the year. H hes a great Football Player. We wish him the best. The girls born friday are mono amniotic twins. They share the same amniotic sack and placenta. Her daughters are already best friends. According to the doctor who delivered the infants, two babies living in the same sack occurs in around one in 10,000 pregnancies and one in five sets of twins. They were born at 33 weeks. Theyre said to be healthy. Breathing on their own. I mean, my gosh. That moment holding hands. Thats a real birth picture, too, by the way. I mean, you see it all. Exactly. Thats what birth looks like, people. Heres our announcement right there. Thats just awesome. This 555foot Free Standing stone structure, tallest in the world, had over 150 cracks in it. Some as much as an inch wide. Rain was coming in. This thing was really badly damaged. And so its taken 32 months, 15 million, half of that donated by philanthropists and historian david rubenstein. And today, finally, theyre reopening it and theres a grand reopening ceremony. I get to take part in it. Im so honored. Im the emcee for this. And then they open it up for tours again to the public starting at 1 00. So its really kind of cool. It just i mean, the work that had to be done. The scaffolding that went up around it weighed 500 tons. That in itself was an engineering marvel. Pretty cool stuff. So theyre opposite sides. How do you describe the two characters . One of your coworkers, simon james, describes simon james as a nonperson, which is a dark description of another human being. How do you describe these two sides of kind of the same person . Its based on this novella, i think at the time he was writing about russian bureaucracy and how you can feel. It was like when cities were starting to form. You could feel totally invisible in a city. You could be on the subway like in new york city now and kind of be an inch away from somebody who doesnt ever make eye contact with you. So i think thats the feeling that this first guy has, that hes in this world that no one notices him. And this other guy comes in who looks exactly like him and dresses like him and everybody for no reason loves this guy. When the first guy says do you notice any similarities . They say oh, maybe a little. Simon james is the timid, more passive one. Whereas james simon is more of the assertive one as we saw asking for the eggs. I understand when you played him, you would leave kind of at the end of the day and feel like you could take on the world. Yeah. The first character simon is very unsure. Just i guess instingively when youre filming the scenes you feel unsure. The other guy is so confident that when youre filming the scenes, you just unconsciously feel better about them. So id always feel better about those scenes even though the acting may requires something less because hes a very one just very confidt. Hes a myopic character. Its a very cool movie. I think we need more of that. We mentioned in the lead your role as Mark Zuckerberg in the social network. How did that change your life . We know how it changed your career, gave you more opportunity as it does for any actor in a film thats thats popular. How did it change your life . Oh, not really. I mean, i guess its helpful to be in things that are popular in youre an actor because more people see it and you can work more. But when i was like 19, i was in a movie that was kind of a it was not really that popular, but people in new york saw it and that was like the biggest difference for me, having a career as an actor, because you just have to be in one thing that people see. And that has some kind of maybe Emotional Depth that people can see you can do other things. Well, we also are looking forward to batman vs. Spiderman. You play lex luther. I know you cant give us too much on how this goes down and what kind of lex luther youll be. Thats still true. Thats going to be a huge role, speaking of lifechanging moment. Good morning. 25 is our first number. Whats the significance there . 25 is the number of grams of added sugar that we should have every day maximum. Thats about six teaspoons. But we love sugar in this country. Our shoe ugar contact has gone 39 . The average person takes in 22 teaspoons of sugar a day. Six teaspoons, as we can see here, is less than half a can of soda. So you can choose. Either have half a can of soda for your daily added sugar per day, or you can have all of this. All of this is the equivalent of 25 grams of added sugar a day. So i would much prefer nutrient food versus empty calories. So stay away from soda. From sweetened beverages, added sugars. Thats really why were getting to be more obese and have higher rates of diabetes from sugar. So really read those labels as well. Yes. In terms of sugars and grams. Yes. Lets move on to our next number, and that is the number four. This pertains to dental health. It does. Four months is the maximum number of time that you should keep your toothbrush. We tend to hold on to them a lot longer than we should. But if you look at the bristles, they tend to get very worn and frayed and they dont work as effectively. So toss them after four months. And for your kids, they tend to go through them even harder. They bite on it. And the bristles are softer. What if youre sick . Should you change it right after you have an illness . Thats a really good question. I do recommend that if you are sick, that you get a new toothbrush. There are also ultraviolent light devices that you can put your toothbrush in to sanitize it. I would use that, but you can buy a fresh one. I always walk around with a string of dental floss in my pocket. She just handed to it me. What are we looking at here . This is the am of floss that you should actually use, 18 inches, each day to floss your teeth. You should flos eves every day. Brush your teeth first, then floss and see what youve missed. Hasnt been used yet. No, it has. Ew. Next number is 150. Like it or not, this pertains to exercise. 150 minutes is how much moderate exercise that you should get every single week. Thats about two and a half hours. For all those people out there that are like i cant do that much, thats the amount of time it takes to watch a movie. And you can break it up. Its not all in one chunk. You can do 30 minutes five days a week. You still get two days off and thats sufficient to keep you healthy. How do we define moderate aerobic activity . A walk . A brisk walk. You want to be winded. You should not be able to carry on a conversation with the person easily. Number one. This is the am of times per month that you should do a breast exam and a skin exam. For a breast exam, you want to feel for any abnormal lumps and bumps or any changes and you should do it right after your menstrual cycle and at the same time each month so that theres consistency. For the skin exam, the goal is to feel for any new spots or marks on your skin to screen for skin cancer. It is on the rise, and i do recommend that people wear sunscreen every single day, and a good rule of thumb if you dont know what to look for, its an acronym. A for asymmetry, b for irregular borders, c for uneven color, d for diameter larger than an eraser, and e for evolving size and shape. If you see any of that, you slou should go to your dermatologist. Thats easy to remember. Number 35. This is the age that we should be doing what . Start getting your thyroid checked. Its a blood test and it determines whether your thyroid is under or overactive and it should be tested every five years. This is not a Screening Test for thyroid cancer. That is screened with an exam during your physical where the doctor puts their hands on your thyroid and feels it. This is simply to assess the function of the gland. Great ideas. Great numbers. Theres a portuguese theme going on here. Thats right. Now that we got that out of the way. Lets get to cooking. Some mussels. The first important thing is purchasing them. You want to make sure theyre very fresh. Dont be afraid to have the butcher smell them. They should smell of the ocean. Okay. Yeah. Oh yeah. Whoo, ocean. Just go for a swim. The next thing is cleaning them. So mussels have beards. Some are bigger as others. Some are as big as duck dynasty beards. Just want to pull them off like that. And whatever else is on top. This is how they hold themselves on to the rocks. And you want to make sure theyre closed. Yes. Any mussel thats open, thats trash. You want to make it with sausage. Weve got a dried chirizo. And a raw chirizo if you want to grind it up and saute that way. Lets get started. Were going to throw olive oil into a hot pan. Onion. Do you soak the mussels . Theyre washed. Just washed. Correct. Garlic. A pinch of salt. Like that. Get that mixed in. Uhhuh. And the chirizo is made with a casing, so some people prefer to take that off. You leave it on. It can be a little bit chewy. Just peel it back . Like that. It comes right off. Its like a piece of paper. Just like that. Comes off. And then you go ahead and slice. I have some already here already. So you can go ahead and add some chirizo to it. The mussels are beginning to go in last because they cook quickly . You want to sweat the chirizo and the tomato that im also going to put in right now. Im going to add a little more salt. This is whats going to excrete all the flavor from the tomatoes. Its all a onepot meal, too. All in one pot. Little cleanup. Start to finish within two minutes. Really quick. And this is something you can do in advance before your guests arrive, sweat the onions with the garlic, the tomato and chirizo and right when your guests arrive, add the mussels. And then youll add white wine. All of that comes after. So the mussels got a minute left. So well go ahead and do that. Right in. Yep. And then were going to increase the heat. Natalie, you go ahead and add the wine. Starting to smell good at well. Now were talking. Thats literally two minutes . This is about a minute and a half. So they all pop open. Weve got some parsley. Going to add some fresh cilantro leaves. Like so. Thats gorgeous. How do you like to serve it . I see youve got some great potatoes on the side. The favorite is a chunk of crusty crunchy bread or potatoes. These are potatoes that we roast in the oven, crush them with your fist. Nice and caramelized. If you cant buy its all about freshness. She realized when she was a teenager she had this obsession with food. Thats when the weight gain really started. After she had kids and shes a stay at home mom, the binges got horrific. She was a closet eater. Didnt have anybody home with her so the food got out of control. Her big wakeup call was within a twoyear span, she lost four family members and her mother was diagnosed with diabetes. So she decided that was it. And shes going to show you when she comes out in a couple of seconds that she used facebook to actually motivate herself and one thing that is really cool is she not only jotted down her food and her exercise, but she was so smart because she tracked her sleep and her water intake and those two thingsit comes to losing weight f y. If you get less than seven hours a night, youre in trouble. In that picture, shes 275 pounds. She lost 126 pounds and shes unbelievable oh, my god. Wow. Oh, my god. Shes got the moves. Amazing. How did Facebook Help you . Well, they were my support group. My friends and family, a lot of them live out of state and so i would track my progress and they would encourage me to be my cheerleaders, they really inspired me to go. These are actual posts. She every ten pounds she would mark down her progress, and then jump in with all of these cheers of support. Way to go. You can do it. How awesome. Youre inspiring me to get up at 6 00 in the morning and wake up. I dont get up at 6 00 to work out. What was the exercise you were doing . I did zumba. Every loves zumba. It is so fun. It is not like working out. It is fun. Lets move on to our second guy, second girl. Mark rucker from lexington, kentucky. At his heaviest, hes 385 pounds. The real turning point for him was they had a Family Vacation coming up. And he was looking so forward with his daughter to riding the roller coasters at dolly wood. When they got there, sheer excitement, they sat down on the roller coaster and the bar would not fit over him. He was devastated. His daughter was devastated as well. With the help of an exjoy fit club member, she supported him through. I want to see him. Not only did he lose 135 pounds, this guy is a triathlete. Of course he is. I cant wait to see him. But i also used an app called ease into 5k. I didnt know how to run, how to be a runner. This app i used was able to help me trying to there it goes. Able to help me go from a couch potato to a 5k runner in a matter of nine weeks. Shows you exactly what to do each and every day. Now, another one that he downloaded is something called cycle meter. Tell them about this. This is very cool. It allows you to track your workouts you can create routes, create routines, and it allows you to track where youre going, what youve done. So we just do our research before we go, and we always seem to have friends wherever were sent to, that makes the transition easier as well. It is more difficult, though, once children are introduced to the scene because then they make friendships wherever theyre living and theyre in a school they like and how do you tell your child, look at it as an adventure, this is going to be cool. Yeah, well, we tell her just that, were moving to another country, youre going to get to learn a new language, new culture, meet new people, make new friends and well eventually see your old friends again once we come back to the state. They adjust pretty quickly. Youre pretty proud of your wife. Adoring you. I love that. You have a terrific relationship. Is it hard to say to your spouse, we have to pack up and go again, honey . We have done it quite a bit. However, shes been exceptional. Shes been able to handle things really well when im gone. I almost think better when im gone. So youre the problem. Exactly. So this is something cool youre doing. You figured out a way to start a business, which is i would imagine would be difficult with all the transitions. Very difficult. Most families move an average of two to four years so were not in one place very long. It is hard to find a job when you move so often because you have so many gaps in your resume. So what i decided to do five years ago was to find something i enjoyed doing that was portable, that i could pick up and take with me every time the military told me to go somewhere else. So i started this little boutique, it is a popup shop called shes swank too. And we are based out of okinawa, japan. Best little hmodel in the world. Your daughter so adorable. One of the neat things about the boutique is not only do i sell from some of my favorite designers, but i also sell items that are handmade by other Military Spouses as well.
