At least nine deaths blamed on storms that produced everything from tornadoes to a dangerous ice storm. Half a Million People without power nationwide. By late last night, more than 700 flights had been cancelled. Another 11,000 delayed. Just in time for the Christmas Holiday. What do we have in store for today. Today is mostly just rain. Heavy rain at that across the southeast. But this whole storm system we saw everything with it and we had our fair share of wild weather this weekend. Reporter look out. The city got half a foot of snow. Its made it a nice setting for a White Christmas. By revealing the information, it will enable other stores to learn from this experience. For ryan oneal this andy warhol is as personal as valuable. An iconic image of his long time love, the late Farrah Fawcett. But the silk screen has been hanging in limbo while a jury decided whether it belonged to oneal. He removed it from faucets home in 2009. We have been watching the case. It was his idea to get paintings made. He knew andy warhol. They were handed one to him and one to her. Fawcetts alma mater, the university of texas claimed the actress had given both warhols to the school in her will. Late last week the jury ruled the school could get one and he gets the other. Its a long trial and were extremely pleased that the jury did the right thing. The trial but the turbulent relationship under the microscope but friends of fawcetts, including jacqueline smith, stood by ryan oneal. I know my friend and i love my friend and i need to support ryan because thats where her heart would be. A surgical procedure prevented him from being in court to hear the jurys 93 decision in his favor but fawcetts two sons were there. They expressed relief. Hopefully your mom can rest in peace. Ryan, you were having surgery the day the verdict was read. Can you take me back, though, to the moment you found out. I know you got a call from your son. What was your reaction when you found out this portrait will stay with you and your family. My son patrick called me from the courthouse. He texted me. I was lying on an operating table. There was blood running down the side of my face and then there were tears running down the side of my face, mixing with the blood. It was a Pretty Amazing moment for me. Well, you testified very emotionally in this case. You said there were times you even talk to this portrait. It does seem its more than an object to you. Well, i talked to her this morning about doing your show. She said i could do it. You asked her permission . Yeah. Its that real to you, is it . This is the way youre keeping her memory alive . It seems to have developed over the years. I had her in my home for 18 years, the painting. But when she died, both paintings were in her home so the university of texas felt that they belonged to the university and i had said, no, no. One is mine and thats why we went to court. And they brought a big set of guns here to fight me. But i had martin singer who is the finest litigator in the country on my side and we prevailed. Ryan, let me ask you because i have been following the case and reading about the case and one of the questions i had was how it is that farrah didnt make it more explicit that she wanted you to have the portrait. She had a will. She left you out of the will. There was testimony in the trial that she asked friends to put postit notes on things they wanted to keep. Why didnt she make it clear she wanted you to have that portrait . Well, because the will that the living trust went into action when she died she had not completed it. She had done one pass at it. It wasnt and she didnt have to say anything about the portrait being mine because it was mine, you see . From the day we got them. One was mine and one was hers. She wouldnt have mentioned that anyway. This was a long shot for texas to do this, i felt. They didnt really have a case. And what motivated the university in your mind . Oh, i have enemies and one of them sent 90 emails to the regents there and said i stole it. And that it was worth 30 million and i stole it and they should come and get it and they finally decided they should come and get it. Nobody knows what this portrait is worth. It probably is in the multimillions of dollars. Put you said this portrait is strictly sentimental value to you. A lot of people look at the value of this and start to do the math. Are you saying youll never sell this portrait . But keep it in your family forever. It will never be sold. It will go on to her son redmond and his children. And his children, like that. It was always invaluable to us. She was a wonderful woman. And this is what was left. Thats all that was left. This trial dredged up a lot of unpleasant memories. Some of the moments from your relationship all came into the trial and were part of the testimony. When you think about that and having to go through that, was it worth it to dredge all of that up . It was worth it, yes. I know that she would have said fight for me. Fight for this painting. She would have told me that. And redmond and i discussed it and he said lets go get it. So we had martin here for help because it looked like it was going to be a tough case. And it turned out it wasnt. Finally, to ask you personally, you mentioned your skin cancer surgery last week. A lot of people like to put them around their rooms but i put them on top of my tree. Youre going to give us a tour of your house. The entire house. Wait until i show you the dining room. Come with me. Okay. So this is our dining room. We call it the Founding Fathers dining room. We have all the Founding Fathers on the wall plus lincoln. I love that. So you see all the Pretty Flowers and you see the christmas balls and the sleighs and the vcandles and on the tre we have cookie tters. I love the cookie cutters. This is something that people could do at home. So this is a replica of your house. This is a replica of my house and this is our gazebo. I love it. Its completely edible and whenever i feel like i need a sugar i break off a piece from the back and eat it. Lets break off a little sugar. Lets have a little sugar. And then our elf on the shelf is of course over our bag from aunt sandy claus to toys for to thes. I love that. You can take that with you. Remember, youre not supposed to touch the elf on the shelf. So then i just took jars and filled them with candy so everything matched and then this is really kind of the room, the centerpiece. All of the shelving units are done. This is just cotton and my little elves with my trees and my houses and then i went and got little gifts and a little snow man and the nutcracker and then the edging, i just edged the houses and the roof tops with it so it all tied in. Is that what attracted you to it . Absolutely. Its like an epic story. Its big. Its big ideas. Honor, sacrifice, revenge, impossible love. But its also very intimate. So thats probably what i really liked about it was the scale and then the human intimacy in the story. I think there is a little bit of something for everyone. Theres the love and these big themes that are dramatic but it has a lot of really cool Samurai Sword fighting. Yea, theres Samurai Sword fighting and ogres and creatures. Its great. Youve done a lot of martial arts in films. But what did you have to do to learn how to do this . I had to learn to use the japanese long sword which i had never used. I love movie fighting and how emotional it can be. The struggle of it. The contact. The beauty. The physicalness of it. So that was a really fun part of the show. Can i ask a dumb question . Are you doing that with real swords . Yeah, you use wood. But eventually you have to go to steel and thats when you have to control the heart rate. You want to be a little more focused because if you miss it can go really wrong. Well, its really exciting to watch and i was thinking about you because honestly we dont see you that often. Good morning, guys. The devastating imagines from the colorado flood this september are among the most heart wrenching of the year but we want to bring you more imagines from the flood zone. An Incredible Group of people going above and beyond to help one of their own. Reporter there are few things more peaceful than the moments after a fresh snow fall. John lived here for 25 years. Its moments like these he lives for but theres also moments he almost didnt live to see. September brought heavy rains to colorado. Towns were flooded. Roads washed away. Landslides, homes destroyed. Lives lost. It was a devastation many had never seen but john knew it too well. Thats because john is a rescue worker. For 43 years hes been part of rescue teams around the country. Some say its remarkable how often this father of two has been at the right place at the right time. Its whether you as an individual choose to get involved. And i just choose to get involved. Reporter but what happened to john in the Early Morning hours of september 16th was not a choice he would have ever made. You know, i prepared for emergencies of every scope for my entire life. I never could have pictured a landslide here. Reporter that evening as the soaking rains continued, john went into his backyard to inspect the hillside behind his home and noticed water gathering. I was trying to process what was happening. The ground started to rumble. Before i turned around i knew what it was and saw a 20 foot deep wall of black. And you could see 80 foot long trees poking out of it and bolders the size of cars. Reporter john was swept away in a giant landslide of debris through his home and down the mountain. I was panicked. To meet your end and know its coming. Reporter the flood waters were below him, broken, battered and barely conscious. John remembered his police radio. Does anybody copy . My name is john. I live in left hand canyon. Im on a tree in the river. Reporter and one last barely radio audio recording. This will be my last transition. Will you tell my children i love them. Reporter within moments his tree snapped but he survived. His home and belongings did not. Buried under several feet of mud. John needed help. And then the help literally walked into his life. I heard a racquet coming up the canyon. They were jovial. They were Healthy People marching up the canyon. Reporter the mud slingers are a group of volunteers organized through word of mouth with a singular task. Bring help to whomever, where ever, and how ever. We didnt know what we were doing at all. None of us do this for a living but i didnt stop to worry about the how. None of us did. We figured this out as we went. Reporter they gave him something he never thought he would find again, hope. On this way we wanted to give Something Back to the mud slingers too. Big hand first of all. And tis the season to recognize extraordinary groups doing extraordinary seasons. It was completely nonsensical. You couldnt follow it even for a second and it was as if it was put together by a dirty minded 14yearold boy who was drunk. It was really, really staggering and cameron diaz makes love to the windshield of a car. Theyre going to put your characterization on the tv box. Lets talk about best tv show. Breaking bad. Breaking bad. The greatest finale in the history of television. Not only did they fulfill the promise of were going to watch him turn into scarface which is what Vince Gilligan wanted to do but they succeeded so beautifully and the pay off was so great i. Was so great that as much as you loved the show, by the end of it you didnt want anymore because you saw it end exactly the way it should. Pretty extraordinary. Im on worst duty. What was the worst show of the year . The worst show, i hate to say it because we kind of like him, what would ryan lochte do . It didnt have any redeeming value. The show just set out to make you feel like, wow, that guy is stupid. Thats sort of the moral to every episode. Wow, hes stupid and i dont think that he is, he is clearly a fantastic athlete not shown in his best light in this show. Short lived show. It was. Best music of the year. Greatest moment in music was beyonce. Toward the end of the year, just last week. Dropped this album. No advanced buzz, no advanced publicity. Only one or two stars on the planet has the power to do that. Immediately a million downloads. The songs are rich. Theyre beautiful. Theyre very edgy. Youre not going to hear them in church. A woman died more than two years ago. Died of cancer and she has given her husband, his new fiancee and that family a surprise Christmas Gift. She passed away in september of 2011 after a battle with ovarian cancer. She left behind four boys. A month before she died brenda wrote a letter to a friend who gave it to an iowa Radio Station instructing the friend to wait to mail it until her husband david had fallen in love again. So the station star 102. 5 invited david who did get engaged into the studio last week. He had no idea what was coming. The Radio Station shared a letter with him. Well, david, we told you we got a very special Christmas Wish and i have to tell you that since i found out about this i thought a lot about what i would do if i were in your position and i really dont know the answer to that. But we want to share it with you. She was very strong. Accepted what happened to her. And since she has been gone, she has shown a lot of signs that she is still here. Hello. My name is brenda. When you are in receipt of this letter i will have already lost my battle to ovarian cancer. We want to grant brendas wish. We are going to send you and your family to disneyworld. Oh my god. So unbelievable. Now brenda asked for three wishes. First was for her husbands new partner to get a day of pampering. So taking care of his new partner. Amazing that she would do that. Second, the magical trip to disneyworld for the whole family and third a night out for her cancer doctors at Mercy Medical center where she was treated for all of those years for ovarian cancer. Thats what the holidays are about. Thats amazing. How about her in her final hours thinking of everyone but herself. She apologized for having to type the letter but her hands were getting too shaky and she couldnt write it. But she was thinking about a fiancee that wasnt there yet and all the doctors at the hospital. And now theyre going to be a family of six kids. Yeah. So great that they can share in the love. Yeah. Today a judge is expected to appoint an independent doctor to evaluate the girls condition. Outside, a group of faith healers led a rally and sent a letter to the d. A. s office demanding for a formal investigation of the hospital. Theyre also accusing doctors and administrations of being insensitive to the family. No, no. It represents a lack of sensitivity. A hospital spokesperson denies those words were ever spoken but said the doctors did make it clear that in their opinion jahi is dead and theres no chance her brain will, quote, restart. Investigators are also looking for the person who tossed a severely injured 10weekold puppy into the trash. The dog was found on a Conveyor Belt at the San Francisco dump on friday. The citys animal care and control took the tiny poodle in and nicknamed her gem. Shes expected to survive. Probably a long line of people waiting to adopt her. Lets get a look at the forecast. It doesnt matter the seafood. Theres a still staples that we always had to have. Always had to have some kind of seafood pasta which were going to do today and it doesnt matter the number. They say seven but it could be nine or ten. Could be more but not less. Seven is the baseline. It depends. It depends the mood your aunt or grandmother are in when cooking. So we have spaghetti. Garlic, olive oil. Well add shrimp to this. Thats the most important part and then just its the most simple pasta in the world. It really is all about getting it correct. A little bit of a toasted garlic. Crushed red pepper, extra Virgin Olive Oil and we cook it just like this. This is the final product. Fantastic. Add a little bit of parsely thats chopped. Thats an easy one. That you can do in a minute. Its basically cooking the pasta is the hardest part. Thats the toughest part. This is mixed, fried, different things. So in this case we have calamari and shrimp, a bunch of vegetables, artichoke, eggplant, we take it and put in milk first. It adds sweetness but most importantly a great coating once we dredge it in flour afterwards. The oil is really hot right now. The oil is smoking hot. Right. This is the fun part. Step away. So my aunt used to make a great fried octopus as well which was wonderful. So here. Add that inside there and well throw herbs in. Oh, i love the fried herbs. The shooting happened just before 2 00 this morning on Howard Street between 1st and 2nd streets. Thats near the. nofframp fr the bay bridge. Police have not released any information about the victim other than this. Hes 27 years old and in Critical Condition and is being uncooperative with authorities. No arrests have been made. Theres no word on who the suspect might be. And it is the last regularseason game ever at candlestick park. For the past 53 years, this has been the home for many sporting events and concerts. Coach seats are going to be getting smaller. Wheres the good news. Just as we as a nation are battling our obese tee problems, some airlines are tightening up. You know the goal, so they can put more seats in the plane so you pay your old seat price for a littler seat. Which is small to begin with. Less padding. And more battles over the arm rests and eliminating the recline. Heres are the ones already installing these seats. Theyre calling them slim line. You go, oh, good, slim line. Theyre southwest.
