We are going to see lake effect snow, especially over the course of the next few days. Look at our temperatures. We have a lot of temperatures near freezing right now but high temperatures later on this afternoon will be around 15 degrees below normal. 50 in indianapolis today. Milwaukee only 45. New steps are being taken this morning to address the problems and embarrassments with the Governments Health care website. And were hearing from the woman at the center of the storm. A lot going on again today. Later today members of the administration are going to come host Health Insurance executives here at the white house to discuss the botched roll out of the obama care website. Were learning new details. From subill ysz that the president wasnt even aware of the websites problems until it was too late. Vowing to fix the broken Health Care Website, Kathleen Sebelius told cnn president obama didnt know about the sites problems until after its turbulent launch. When did the president first come out . It became clear early on. The first couple days but not before that . There was no concern at the white house or hhs . I think that we talked about having testing going forward. Reporter subilious skirted questions about whether she would resign. I think my job is to get this fully implemented and to get the website working right. Reporter still republicans havent let up. This roll out has turned into a real fiasco. Reporter in new jersey derek hall is one of those struggling to register. We tried repeatedly since the day obama care rolled out and we were just very unsuccessful. Reporter overnight, the president released a video to rally supporters to his side suggesting other ways to sign up. The Old Fashioned way, either over the phone or in person. Reporter and nbc news learned in the coming weeks the administration will dispatch cabinet secretaries and white house officials to these ten locations with the highest rates of uninsured to encourage enrollment. The white house still will not say how many people have su successfully enrolled. The secretary would only say the number is in the thousands but officials here insist the real rush is going to come closer to the sign up deadlines. They realize the clock is ticking. Even as the white house tries to fix the Health Care Plan they dealt swiftly with another problem this morning. Identifying and firing an official behind an insulting twitter account. Using twitter to anonymously vent about everything you hate about your job. But this was no ordinary disgruntled worker. This was the senior Foreign Policy adviser to the president of the United States. He was one of the president S National Security counsel advisors on iran. He was abruptly fired last week for leading a secret life on twitter. For the last two and a half years he has been viciously tweeting about coworkers policies, republicans and journalists. Josh rogen was among those that thought the anonymous man was an insider. It was a mix of leaking sensitive National Security information, criticizing the policies of the administration he worked for, and insulting the personalities and appearance of very famouS National Security officials. According to the associated press, the concrete and steel doors were deliberately left open while one of two crew members inside slept. The reprimands are considered career ending. Hundreds of people held a rally in missouri tuesday night in support of a teen girl who said she was sexually assaulted by a 17yearold boy when she was just 14. Residents took to the streets. For the First Time Since the story started getting attention on social media. A local prosecutor dropped charges against the teen boy and a second 17yearold who roorded last years incident on his cell phone. A special prosecutor is looking into the case. Police in nevada are learning more about the 12yearold that opened fire at a middle school killing a teacher there. Nbcs joe fryer is in sparks again this morning following the investigation. Joe, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, savannah. Investigators say the seventh grader took a handgun from his home but its still unclear why he opened fire before taking his own life. This morning, the School Remains closed but out front theres a growing memorial paying tribute to a heroic victim. In the minutes following mondays shooting there was a desperate search for answers by anyone connected to sparks middle school. I drove through a barricade basically just to get some information. To have somebody talk to me. Reporter Reggie Landsberry was looking for his big brother mike. A math teacher at the school. He soon learned mike was the only gunshot victim that didnt survive. Im still in shock, man. Its unbelievable. Its like a terrible dream. Terrible. Reporter but as the hours passed he also learned how mike physically put himself between the 12yearold shooter and students like jose cazares who spoke to us yesterday on today. He was telling him to stop and put the gun down and then the kid yelled out no, like, yelling at him, then he shot him. Reporter police say landsberry actions gave other students time to escape. I love my brother and i wish he was here but thank goodness he could help in any way possible. Reporter that bravery was no surprise to students that gathered around a growing memorial that pays tribute to landsberry. The teacher they called batman because he loved the super hero so much. He just touched our heart in ways we cant explain. He was a real life changer. Reporter thats why jose and his mother wanted to meet Reggie Landsberry. Hes a hero to everybody. Reporter so they could thank his family in person. Im glad youre safe. Im glad youre okay. Reporter so far police have not released the name of the 12yearold shooting suspect. Nbcs Michelle Kosinski spoke to the lawyer for the couple who had the cover when she was discovered. Michelle, good morning to you. Where did this mystery little girl called maria come from, really . Well, that lawyer talked to us at length at times becoming emotional and saying as a mother herself she never would have taken this case if she did not come to believe this story. The Attorney Says this couple told her marias biological mother was a bulgarian prostitute who with her pimp and boyfriend tried to find a home for her unwanted infant among families in the area. But the couple at first didnt want maria, having five biological children of their own. She says the husband who has a past involving Armed Robbery told her he felt taking the baby would be, quote, like bringing a bomb into the house. That eventually people and police would ask questions. But she says the wife told her when she saw maria, the child looked like a barbie doll and was crying in her arms and she thought, i cant just leave it. I dont want it to die or go into bad hands. She says the couple who are illiterate and cant write their own names loved maria as their own. And are now in as much anguish as the child. It took Ten Police Officers to separate her from them. She says the wife reached her my phone sunday from jail and then the alleged biological mother and boyfriend have gone into hiding. Probably because the biological mother of marias is in panic, too. Reporter police finally agreed to talk to us by phone confirming this story could be possible. They reported they are now looking for a bulgarian woman but they wouldnt confirm that. Theyre not ruling out anything but if this story does ring true, that would mean maria was not abducted. Not another desperate familys missing child. Remember, though, police said this couple officially registered 14 children as their own. Their lawyer wouldnt comment. Police are investigating but she did imply that some might have been their grandchildren since roma girls often get married as young as 14. An Investigation Underway after Sheriff Deputies shoot and kill a suspect holding a replica gun. The Santa Rosa Press democrat says it was a 13yearold boy that was ordered to drop that rifle. Deputies say when he didnt, they opened fire killing that young man. Cal osha, reopening its investigation into the first of two separate worker fatalities at the brand new levi stadium in santa clara. An elevator county weight killed 63yearold donald white back in june. Cal osha will resume. They say some new questions have been raised. So they are right now just looking at that evidence. One parent of a player on the losing team took it especially hard and filed a bullying complaint against aledos coaches for, quote, not easing up when the game was in hand. Saying everyone in the football stadium was witness to the act. Ive never heard of a bullying report in a Football Game. Reporter knowing the match up was uneven and because their division has no mercy rule, aledos coach tim buchanan says he pulled his starters early and implemented a running clock in the Third Quarter to help keep the score down. Something both teams coaches discussed before the game, but he had to draw the line somewhere. I do not want to have to get to the point where you tell your kids dont play hard. Reporter Western Hills coach didnt respond to calls but told nbc affiliate kxas he disagreed with the parents complaint that his players were bullied. One student tweeted if we could do that to a team we would. Nothing that happened was a form of bullying. Another tweeted parents should be ashamed. Losing is losing. Not bullying. The aledo superintendent said the parent that made the complaint is no longer upset. He now knows steps were taken beforehands by both coaches to tone down the win. Other parents said kids should be encouraged to do their best, no matter who youre playing. You dont want to confuse them by telling them to go out there and ease up. Were talking about the popular jerky treats that dogs seem to love. Is there some ingredient in them causing pets to collapse . This morning the fda is calling it a mystery and issuing a new warning. Reporter complaints are pouring in from all over the country. In california, rachel chambers gave her dogs jerky treats. Within hours, she says, two of them got seriously sick and her third dog, callie died. Her stomach had ruptured. It was violent and she did not deserve the way that she died. Reporter in missouri, shannon fed her chihuahua mixes chicken jerky. She says they nearly died. She got so sick her heart even seemed to stop. Reporter in pennsylvania, kristen fed her dog jerky treats too saying his kidneys shutdown. They suggested i put him down. I held him in my arms until his body relaxed. Approximately one in every four households has a person living in it that suffers from those headaches. In a moment well take you through a live procedure that could give you relief. But first, heres dr. Nancy snyderman. This is the start of a migraine. Abnormal impulses of brain cells and blood flow spreading from the back to the front of the brain. Triggered by anything from pungent smells, bright lights, alcohol or even hormonal changes. A migraine can last 4 to 72 hours with symptoms including head pain, light sensitivity, nausea and blurred vision. Approximately 36 million americans suffer from migraines. Three times more women than men have them. Those with migraines are more likely to also suffer from depression, anxiety, heart attack and stroke among other serious conditions. It is a pain that 57yearold sandra garvais knows very well. My first migraine was at age nine. I was in fourth grade. She took medication regularly for her migraines but relief was only temporary. Its a medication that causes a rebounding effect which means that your headache goes away but it returns after, you know, so many hours. We teach you how to inject yourself. Lets remember this is a last line of defense against migraines. How delicate a procedure are we going to see this morning . Well, youre going to see him inject needles with a special medicine and the needles are placed near certain nerves in the upper part of the cervical spine, the neck. And this is nancy talking. This is all under xray so you can see exactly where the needle is going in, correct . Yes, thats right. So we have a model here between the second and third cervical vertebrae. Is that where the needle is going in to inject the medicine . Yes. Were going to go to several different levels. Were trying to isolate the level that produces most of her pain or aggravates most of her pain. Youre not targeting the nerve that causes the migraine. Youre targeting the nerve that feels the pain . The migraine actually begins in the brain and that circuit descends all the way to the neck and certain neck nerves may participate in aggravating the circuit which escalates the migraine and keeps the process going. Were trying to interrupt that process. So these nerves come out of the cervical spine and then depending on how they branch out, they can really be a trigger point for the migraines. This patient is sedated. Will they have any discomfort as a result of the actual procedure . No, she should not. She has been sedated and then we localized we have given her local in the area where it occurs. This is not a first line treatment. This is after people have exhausted medicines and other procedures. But how often can a patient get this kind of nerve block . Well, we do a couple in a short amount of time to isolate the contributing nerves. This patient also had a lot of neck pain which is part of the process of the migraine. Thats why were going after the neck to isolate those nerves. Should she come out of sedation and feel immediately better . Yes. In this particular block she would feel better quite soon. And the medications that are put in range from long acting anesthetics all the way up to alcohol that numb nerves . Yes, were not going to do that at this point. This is just a local anesthetic thats injected and possibly steroid which will sustain the benefit for awhile. The nice thing is for people that arent reliant on narcotics it really allows them to get off medicines they dont want to be on anymore. What are your thoughts based on the fact that youre a gay american . Well, im a gay american. I have married into a russian family. And i have been a long time supporter of russia, the culture, the country, the language, everything about russia. And while this law is a terrible thing that you cant be gay publicly in russia, i plan to be there in full support of our brothers and sisters there and not be afraid. If i get arrested i do. If not, great. But our presence is needed and for all the olympians that worked so hard, a boycott is the worst thing you can do to all of these young people. Good for you. Thank you. I was going to say, you know, when i was a kid, the love boat was my favorite show although i dont think my parents allowed me to watch it. Somehow i saw every single episode, though. Thats why youre so successful today. But it was a wonderful thing, you know . It was the first time any show was done like that on the water with a cruise line with three different kinds of stories and these huge guest stars. The thing that was so great about it, i think, is that the critics hated it. They said this is going to sink like the titanic so about four years later we were in 90 countries. We started a cruise industry and gave rebirth to the cruise industry. Even your own agent when he first got the script had colorful language for it. I said what do you think about it . He read it before i did. He said i think it sucks but do you want to read it . I said sure so i said i dont think theres ever been anything on Television Like this and my wife looked at it and she came out after ten pages and she said if you get the right people, put it on the right time, this is going to go. And to go back in time, this was not a period of time when cruising was very popular. You write about in the book that people who then went on cruises would write complaint letters to you. Yeah, i would get those too. They thought i was a real captain. People would come on looking for me and doc and everyone else. They had to get off at the next stop. Before the love boat you were on mary tyler moore. And this book chronicles your whole life. A supporting character in the story is your hair or lack there of. When you were a young actor you were worried this would prevent you from getting parts. Thats why i had to get a hairpiece when i came to new york. I got a job at radio city music hall and i had to get a hairpiece. My roommate had to loan me some of the money, is a second hand hairpiece. Is that the piece. 125. And that belonged to somebody else first. Well times for tight. You didnt have a lot of money. Right. You would window shop and you had your eye on one particular luxury item. Well, i was living on central park west. Inside under 74th street. Worked at the music hall and i would walk down and walk home every day because i couldnt afford 34 a week to take a bus or anything but i would always pass on 6th avenue a mens shop and i stopped every single time in front of that window. They always had a fruit of the loom underwear display. It was 69 cents a pair. You wanted them . I couldnt afford it but i used to look at that and say some day im going to get you and now i go in and buy a six pack just like that. Thats really making it. Gavin we hear your whole story. There are highs. There are lows. Its a wonderful chronicle. When you look back on that time today and everything you have been through, how do you reflect on it . Im grateful. Im grateful i went through the hard times, the difficult times and good times and the best times are happening now. These are the best im 82 years old. This is the best time of my life. Could you have imagined this when you were tolling away on the first book years ago. No. Well i was in my parents house in rubber ducky pajamas. After the success of the first two did it put pressure on you for the last one in the series . Well, i think i learned how to focus only on the story. How to shut out all of those external voices and try to try to find the most authentic story possible. I kind of learned that with the second one so when the third was coming out i was able to focus. I was reading one review and it described the book as ruthless. Do you know where theyre coming from . I guess i understand why they would say that. But to me, what happens in the third book feels like a very satisfying end to a lot of the characters stories. So i dont know if it was ruthless so much as earned i hope. You have some of these long lasting characters and you showed no mercy to some of them. Well, i dont think i have ever set anyone up to believe that any of the good characters were safe. I mean in the first two books we certainly from our share of losses. Right. So its in keeping with the tone of the trilogy. The first one comes out in the spring . March. You were on the set in chicago. Yeah. What was it like for you . These characters only lived in your imagination and on a page. What was it like to watch actors and actresses playing them . It was pretty incredible because i wasnt sure that anyone would be able to capture the characters i devised but on set i realized howell they had done with casting. They felt very real to me as the characters that i had written. Now, lets do this, we have so many people that are fascinated by this series and so we have carson over in the orange room and he has tweets from some of your biggest fans. Carson, what do you have . I do. Our viewers are super psyched. What is the scariest thing about finishing the divergent series . The scariest thing . I think the scariest thing is letting it out into the world and just trying to let go of it and, you know, as an author, the second that the book hits the shelves it starts belonging to you and starts belonging to a lot more people. The scariest thing is the pressure to make them feel like the ending is satisfying. Carson, do you have another . Yeah, one more quickly, will you consider expanding the series . Will i consider expanding . You know, i really planned the arch to end in this place. I feel like the ending i am proud of it and happy with the way it ends. He got a c in math. Take a look. Thats the reaction from dad. Hes so proud of his boy. Can you imagine . They worked together as a team. He helped his son with his homework. So when he got the c, we interviewed them in the last hour. They are just the sweetest father son team. And you get the real sense. He wins father of the year award. He couldnt be more proud. If he had gotten an a or a b. This kid needs to be in movies. How great was this guy . And the dad as well. And the emotion and the joy were still in the selling the today. How sweet. Hes gone on to college. He wants to move to the United States and be a chef. He is glad he got the c because he tested out of math. It is an example of great parenting. The parents can celebrate the small victories, like a c, a passing grade. It was such a hard thing for his kid to get there. For them it was a team accomplishment. He knew all that went into getting the c. Favorite story. Love, love, love that. An example of incredible parenting. Were going to get to other examples which you may be thinking. High school Football Game in texas started a big debate outside ft. Worth, texas. Aledo defeated Western Hills 910. One player on the losing team taking it very hard and filed a bullying complaint. An official bullying complaint which now the state has to take up and investigate. For the coaches not easing up when the began was in hand. He pulled his starters early, put in a running clock after halftime which means it doesnt stop on in completions, timeouts. They have a no mercy rule. This is texas football, texas lights. No mercy there. Heres what coach buchanan had to say. One team learned what it feels like to get beat 910. And the other one learned its not a whole lot of fun when you beat someone 910. He didnt sound very sympathetic in that sound bite. If you read through all of his remarks he said i sat down after the game and asked myself what could i have done to prevent that . He said we could have won 1500. He did everything he possibly could. He stopped the clock. He stopped throwing the ball. Actually, students the other teams players actually said, if they could have had that result and could have they actually tweeted if they could have done the very same thing, they would have. Nothing happened in their point of view in that form was bullying. So they said that was not bullying. You know, thats a huge margin of victory. And the truth is this team, the winning team, has an average margin of victory of 77 points. So i think the problem is theyre in the wrong division. They need to move up a couple of leagues. Theyre beating up on everybody. I played sports pretty competitively and soccer in spain. There its religion. We got crushed. The scores were 170. But for us it was celebrating the small victories. If one of us scored a goal or stopped an incredible goal, it was like yes. And thats the moment. Thats what you want kids to learn from i think. Youre going to lose. But life is not fair. Kids need to learn it. It is high school too. It is not little kids. My sons rec league have a mercy policy. They cant score 10 goals over the team. In that sense theres something to it. Little kids dont handle losses well. There is something in the rules in texas where the coaches could have gotten together at halftime and call it but the coach said he didnt know about that. The other thing it gives players and kids who dont get in a varsity player a chance to play. So they get a chance to play and practice. Everybody gets a chance to play. You cant as a coach say stop playing. Thats what he said. I cant tell them not to play hard. You want them to learn how to play the game and play it well. To say go be terrible out there, kids. Youre not going to do that. When i saw the headline 910 i thought, man, he must be a jerk. But he did everything he could. Its not bullying. Some are saying is it unsportsman like conduct . I dont think in that case. He did everything he possibly could, except maybe change divisions, which is what needs to happen. Now, this is extreme parenting. This is extreme parenting. This is tough love taken to the next level. In connecticut two High School Students were arrested and charged with an underaged party. You know how they got arrested . Their own parents called the cops. They took advantage of their parentss columbus day weekend away. A couple of parties over three days. Guess who shows up to bust the party . The parents. Then they tell the cops to come and bust the party. Good thing, theyre minors, so thats not going to be on their record. When theyre applying for college, they to the floor to check the box. Thats a tough lesson. These kids were arrested. Would you call the cops on your kids . No way. Never . No way. No. Would you . I dont think so, no. Im not a good person to ask. Now, if my house was completely destroyed, on the other hand. If i came home and it was trashed. I wonder if this had been a pattern. Like this had happened over and over again and they finally said, you know what, lets let the cops settle this. You throw everybody out of your house and you sit down and talk to them. I think the parents busting it themselves would be scary enough. I dont think having the the police showing up and arresting them. Come on. Those kids will never be right after that. Time to take you into todays kitchen for sweet treats for halloween with a Little Something extra for the adults. The kids arent the only ones who should be having fun so invite your friends over. There are great photos and tips and techniques to make your pops look their best. Okay. These are cosmo pops. Look how cute. To make the garnish stand out, i developed this technique. Take some sugar glue. Want to do it, kathie lee . I was going to eat one. Youre going to eat one . Take some sugar glue and brush it on this little lime. Theres a recipe in the book for that, too. Position it on the frozen pop. Bottom or the top . At the top. Basically wherever you want the garnish to go. Here is the trick. You put like a tablespoon of pop mixture back into the mold and then you plunge it in im going to make you plunge it down in. What happens is that the mixture comes up around the mold and almost laminates the pop. It doesnt have that blurry, embedded look. You have to be careful so it doesnt go sliding off. Yeah. These are great for a Vampire Party for halloween or and then these pops, too. This is a kiwipomegranate pop. This is a gin and tonic pop. It has b2 in it, which is riboflavin.
