2013. and good morning, everyone. welcome to today. i'm savannah guthrie. >> i'm matt lauer. we're starting with a story talked about all across the country. the poisonous letters sent to new york's mayor and advocates of gun control. we have fresh information. jonathan, good morning to you. >> a letter to the mayor was stopped ahead of time, but the letter to the lobbyist did reach him and he opened it, but he has not falling ill. >> the letter obviously referred to our anti-gun efforts. >> new york mayor michael bloomberg confirmed one ricin letter was sent to him, but it was intercepted by an alert mail room worker at this manhattan office building where mail to city hall is screened. but in washington, gun control activist mark glaze got his letter at his private office. officials say both ricin letters threaten the mayor, warning no one is going to take away gun rights. the d.c. police report says the letter had a whitish-orange substance on the note and was opened as glaze walked outside. glaze helped run mayors against illegal guns, an organization that bloomberg supports. they run ads like these across the nation. >> with right come responsibility. that's why i support comprehensive background checks. >> mayor bloomberg said he will carry on the campaign. >> this is a scourge in the country that we have to make sure we get under control and eliminate. >> field tests were positive in both cases. ricin is a poison made from caster beans that could be deadly when ground up and inhaled. investigators tell nbc the ricin letters were hailed from shreveport, louisiana, on may 20th. screeners at the white house and capitol hill have been warned to look out for additional letters. this comes weeks after an arrest was made in a previous ricin mail case where letters were sent to president obama and some members of congress but were stopped in advance at off-site screening facilities. in this case, it's unclear how potent the letters were, although two new york police officers who responded reported short minor illnesses over the weekend. >> mailed may 20th, shreveport, louisiana. have investigators come up with anything more from what is written in the letters. >> what was written in the letters were threats to the mayor and lots of writing about gun control and the right to bare arms. that's the sort of language. as for who did this, the fbi is hard as work trying to track a suspect. they're going to look for fingerprints, any dna, any evidence out of shreveport, the fbi has the lead along with the fbi here in new york. >> are they going to change procedures in terms of handling mail coming into government offices here and new york and elsewhere. >> here in the city, it was found at the off-site facility before it reached city hall and it was a mail room worker who found the envelope, noticed something wrong with it, and stuck it in a box with gloves and called police. that's how they first got in contact. >> thank you very much. >> there is a chance for some dangerous weather again today across a large section of the country. al is checking the storms for us. good morning to you. >> thanks a lot. and take a look at what happened last night. these severe storms rolling into arlington, texas, before the texas rangers game. crew tried to rangle the tarp. it took 20 minutes to get it down. by the time they did, the field was a mess. they had to cancel the game. and flash flooding, a good portion of the country dealing with flash flooding. carl sandburg university. watch this water, talk about a flash flood coming in, blowing the doors out from the front. look at that, danger, wet ground, wet floors. that gets washed away as well. we're going to see more weather like this today. why? we've got a big warm air mass coming on in. cold air into it. from wichita falls all the way to des moines, we have the risk of strong storms. we may be looking at tornado watches later today from des moines all the way to wichita falls. oklahoma city as well. on the radar, already, strong storms firing up from wichita, kansas city, tulsa, oklahoma. the other problem, besides tornadoes, flood watches in effect stretching from la crosse, joplin, back through the plain states. may see some flood warnings. these areas have picked up 5 to 6 inches of rain, and more heavy rain anywhere from 3 to 5 inches from chicago to kansas city, davenport and quincy. big problems later today on into tomorrow. savannah, matt, and natalie. >> thank you, and we'll get the rest of the forecast in a moment. >> natalie is here with more on the story of the american soldier accused of killing afghan civilians. >> the army staff sergeant has agreed to plead guilty in a bid to avoid the death penalty. an attorney for robert bales tells the associated press his cliend was crazed and broken when he carried out the predawn attacks in southern afghanistan. a judge and commanding general must still approve any plea deals. >> a former bush administration official is set to take the helm at the fbi. president obama is expected to nominee james comy at the justice department under george w. bush and later the general council to a hedge fund. the nomination would still need to face a review where he would face questions about his ties to wall street, but his selection is expected to receive bipartisan support. >> new tension this morning between attorney general eric holder and the press. he has been on a mission to ease tensions with the media after it was revealed the justice department had secretly gathered the phone records and e-mails of several journalists. that's hit a snag as several news outlets refuse to meet in off the record meetings with the department. this comes after concern that he may have lied under oath on the scandal. >> terrifying moments caught on camera in new york as firefighters were putting out a blaze. a facade began to crumble, raining down bricks. he was injured along with a second firefighter. both were taken to the hospital and treated for head and neck injuries. we're also getting our first look this morning at the medals for the 2014 winter olympics in sochi, russia, presented today in st. petersburg. they're designed to feature a patchwork motef. symbolic of the cultures and ethnicities that make up the russian federation. in total, 1300 medals will be crafted for the sochi games that begin february 7th, 2014. about 253 days. >> about 253? >> all right. al, thank you very much. the housing market is improving, but is there a new real estate bubble already on the horizon? nbc's stephanie gosk is here with a closer look at what's going on. hi, stephanie. >> good morning, matt. the new housing numbers show prices rising at the fastest pace since 2006. but look closely, may be too soon to celebrate. >> reporter: a big day for sarah, she's finally getting the keys to her new house. >> here you go. >> happy to be a homeowner, doubly happy her real estate battle is over. in six months, she made nine offers and out bid eight times. >> every offer was a cash offer. >> a victim of the white hot housing market in oakland, california. her successful offer was $100,000 over the asking price. just before the housing bubble burst in 2008, shocking stories of real estate hysteria like this were repeated all across the country. have those days really returned? the numbers are rebounding. an index of 20 cities shows 10.9% growth in housing prices in the last year. the highest growth rate since 2006. three cities, las vegas, phoenix, and san francisco showed annual growth over 20%. some experts say the san francisco area may be on the cusp of another bubble. but for many cities, prices sunk so deep during the recession, there's still a long way to go. >> remember, these markets are still 40, even 50% down in home prices from where they were during the peak of the housing boom. >> reporter: after the collapse, banks are now very careful whom they lend to. so mortgages are harder to come by. some of the surge in sales is from investors with lots of money looking to cash in as the market heats up. >> what's happened in some of the most distressed markets is that investors have come in and bought up all the distressed properties. that is homes on the very low end. and that's pushed those prices up higher. >> reporter: so a buyer with a mortgage faces tough competition. >> i think people are doing whatever it takes to get a house in the bay area right now. >> reporter: the only way to get the house is to offer the highest price. >> another bit of positive news, last year the total number of foreclosures was down 24%, but there are still twice as many foreclosures nationwide compared with pre-recession numbers, matt. >> stephanie gosk, thank you very much. let's go over to savannah. now to washington where we mentioned the heat is on attorney general eric holder. just one of the controversies swirling around the white house these days. let's turn to tom brokaw, nbc news special correspondent. tom, good morning. >> good morning. >> i know you've got a special on the military channel, we want to talk about that in a moment. let's talk about what's happening in washington. eric holder under fire with fairly aggressive prosecutions involving the subpoenaing of records of reporters in some cases tracking their movements. there are calls, again, for him to resign. the heat is always on this attorney general, but do you think this is more serious threat to his? >> well, i think there's a lot of explaining that the justice department has to do. on the other hand, this is a complicated case. this is a case involving the fox news reporter. it was a highly secretive intelligence report that he got very early at a time when the -- when the united states government was trying to deal with the reality of what was going on in north korea. at the same time, i think that the justice department owes the press and the country an explanation of why they felt it was necessary to prosecute it. and that's not been very forthcoming. obviously the republicans are taking full political advantage of all of this. i don't think the meeting today should be off the record. i think if it's worth knowing about, let's put it on the record. >> you're referring to this meeting that the attorney general has called with the bureau chiefs of major news organizations. some news organizations have said if it's off the record, we won't go, others have said we will go. >> i think you should insist it go on the record. and by the end of the day, it may be on the record. prominent among the institutions that said we're not going to be in an off-the-record session. if we need to know about it, it ought to be in the sunshine. >> and very quickly, you made a remark that journalists on the other hand shouldn't have what you call a glass jaw when it comes to some of these investigations citing the first amendment and threats to the first amendment. >> well, the first amendment is a critically important part of the constitution. it is not unconditional, obviously. any number of us over the years have been in dialogues and in conversations with senior government officials about when something can be disclosed and under what circumstances. and it's kind of case by case. it's not unconditional. so i don't know enough entirely about this case, but i do think it ought to be discussed out in the public. >> let's turn to the special i mentioned a few moments ago that premieres. this is a beautiful opportunity. you get to walk through the nbc news archives and kind of update and reflect on some of these moments. i want to play an interview you did with president clinton back in 1993. take a look. >> how long do you think it'll be, mr. president, before there's a first husband. >> not long. not long. i think a woman will be elected president probably in my lifetime. i certainly hope that one will have a chance to run. i think that, you know, people are in this country are increasingly moving to the position that everybody ought to be able to fulfill their abilities. >> that's a priceless piece of videotape. >> 1993, the first year in office. and you saw the rapt attention mrs. clinton was paying to all of that. it's amazing when you stop to think about. all they've been through, 1993, 20 years ago, and they're still at the top of the attention span in this country. no more prominent politician than bill clinton than what he's doing with the global initiative. and the big question is, is she going to run when '16 rolls around? >> reporter: you get the eerie feeling police are outgunned in san jose. this is the third overnight shooting, the only one resulted in a homicide however. it's an active scene behind me, the body is saying lane across the street across the street from santee elementary. the principal made the decision to cancel classes because the body would be here for a while and children would be walking near or around the body as they were headed to school. there are no suspects in this case at this point. police are still investigating. they got a call about 5:30 this morning of shots being fired in the area, they are investigating and will likely be updating the news crews here in the next few minutes or so. that's the latest in san jose. i'm damian trujillo, "nbc bay area news". >> 20th homicide in san jose. parents, do not take your kids to santee elementary this morning. time to check in with mike inouye, major backup on the bay bridge. >> the approach suffering that upper deck, the upper deck blocked one lane, jammed traffic down the incline. it's moving smoothly now but from the bay bridge toll plaza where the meet aring lights were moving more slightly, west 580, all backed up because of the earlier traffic and basically stoppage across the upper deck, all lanes open but some folks went to the san mateo as an alternate, jammed but hayward approaching 92 and the toll plaza. christina, things are warmer today, huh in. >> can't catch a break in the traffic department. the good news is the weather is on your side for today. not that cool out there at this point, temperatures already starting to warm up, in the 50s now and as we head throughout the afternoon we'll jump into the 70s and 80s so you don't have to worry about fog interrupting your drive. temperatures warm today, we get into the all-important weekend. ♪ we see the start, also the we see the start, also the finish. are we as tough as we think we are? exposing how student cheaters are fooling even the best professors. the best teachers. >> jeff will be here in a short while with that. but first, new surveillance video could be the key evidence in the case of an american mother in a mexican jail this morning accused of smuggling drugs. nbc's miguel almaguer is in arizona where the woman is speaking out for the first time since her arrest. miguel, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. her court hearings have been under way all week long, but she hasn't heard a word of testimony. instead, she's been in a cell wondering if she'll get her freedom or have to wait months for a trial to begin. >> reporter: this morning, inside a mexican jail, she spends her ninth day behind bars, but now she's breaking her silence. >> i just want to be back home with my family and my children and my loving husband. >> reporter: the arizona mother of seven and devout mormon is accused of being an international drug runner. born in mexico but now an american citizen believes she may have been set up. >> it's good, it's better. but now -- but i get concerned too because i want to go home. >> reporter: with her husband gary, she lives near phoenix. where the couple was headed after they say they attended a funeral in mexico. when their passenger bus was stopped at a military check point, police say they found these packages, 12 pounds of marijuana under her seat. >> i feel like -- i wanted to find a way out. and i'm telling them i'm innocent, i'm innocent. i'm saying what happened and i'm here. just have faith. >> reporter: in court wednesday, mexican military officials who were supposed to testify never showed up and have made no public comment. her attorney is now hoping surveillance video from the bus station will prove juanita didn't bring any drugs aboard. in the meantime in phoenix wednesday night, a rally in support, this as a state department and arizona congressman familiar with the family keeps a close eye on the case. >> knowing this family, i find it incredulous they would be involved in any kind of drug smuggling. >> i'm worried for my kids. they need me there. >> reporter: this morning, an american citizen still fighting for her freedom in a country where today she's still accused of smuggling drugs. >> reporter: a judge is now reviewing this case. again, that surveillance tape could be a critical piece of evidence. meanwhile, they can only wait for a judge's decision. matt? >> we did. we found lots of bacteria in the bags, outside the bags, but nothing altogether unexpected. certainly nothing harmful or pathogenic. >> what kind of bacteria did you find? >> we found a whole variety of micro -- staph -- >> i was going to talk about that. there are some strains of staffylococcus that can cause hospital-born infections and to people with acquired immune deficiency, but we didn't find any of those strains in the bags. >> why is it such a great breeding ground for it? >> well, because as this bag you can see, you can zip it shut, and it's a closed environment where it's very dark. it holds on to the moisture. it's humid. it's damp. it can have crumbs in had there and dust and things and bacteria -- >> snacks. my purse has crumbs in it. >> one is not immune. >> less of a problem because you don't tend to put food in your wallet as well. >> i have a pop tart in my wallet. >> that explains a lot. that explains the trail you leave behind in the mornings. >> what do you think about this study that said some hand bag handles in particular are dirtier than public toilet seats? >> i would be a little skeptical for a couple of reasons. number one, the kind of bacteria that you are going to find on the bag. as we found, it tends not to be the harmful variety anyway, and number two, the -- it's really the diversity of bacteria that they're talking about. wills there's more kinds of bacteria on a handbag, but toilet in a public rest room are going to be filled with harmful bacteria. >> simple ways to alleviate this if you carry a handbag for a long period of time. warm wipes? what? >> we found the inside of the bag was actually the worst place for the bacteria, so a couple of things you can do to inhibit this is just to keep it open as much as possible. let it air out so the moisture doesn't stay inside. then every once in a while maybe once a week take a bag and take everything out of it, get rid of the dust and the crumbs. maybe take a paper towel, wet it. you can use anti-bacterial wipes if you want, but that's overkill, and just wipe it out with a wet paper towel. what you are looking to get out is the dst and the crumbs. you are never -- it's a losing battle to fight the bacteria, but if you can get what they eat, then they won't set up camp and establish themselves there. >> name names. who is the dirtiest producer? >> it's so funny. this generation is so digitally savvy, they seem to have lost some of the fundamentals. i was talking to a mom yesterday who was telling her son he should write a handwritten letter to the interviewer who helped him get his job. he's like, no, mom, i'll send a thoughtful e-mail. and he's right, mom, a handwritten letter is the way to go. >> we both sounded very old. do young people write letters? nebraska state senator said in an interview that women, no one understands them. don't even understand themselves, books and books and books have been written about it and no one understands it. fortunately he's now happily married, he was a bachelor for 47 years, he married his lovely wife lauren. so he finally met his match and i'm sure he understands her a lot more. he seems to think women are difficult to understand. what do you think? >> i think george carlin said it best. he said this is a much -- you have to know about men and women. women are crazy and men are stupid. and the reason that women are crazy is because men are stupid. >> i agree. that settles that one. do we move on? >> men are from mars -- >> women are from venus. >> they're on a different planet altogether. don't try to understand us because we're not going to be understood. >> really? >> i think if you can't get it, you're really not trying very hard. i mean, you're just as complicated as we are. >> are men really complicated? >> no. >> i do think that. i think men are straightforward but really they have little things that you would think, oh, my gosh -- i think that just affected them. and you're like, how did that happen? of course you do. yada, yada, yada, enough already. >> the topic is cheating. a licensed psychotherapist conducted research and suggests the reason that men and women cheat is different. men cheat because they seek approval. women cheat because they want attention. do you all agree with that notion? >> i think that today with all the celebrity stuff going on and people -- it's become common place. cheating is not even -- there's no scarlet letter anymore. but i -- >> you don't think so? according to a gallup poll, 90% of adults found that extramarital affairs were wrong. >> really? >> yeah. >> how many celebrities have had extramarital affairs, their careers haven't suffered, marriages haven't suffered. we have somebody running for office leaps and bounds might be the mayor -- the next mayor of new york city. nobody cares anymore. everybody has a short memory. >> i think that people tend to put celebrities in a different category, though. >> right. >> if your neighbor or in our case a couple people that we know are going through some serious issues because of cheating, i don't think that people are as easily forgiving their neighbors or regular people. >> they judge them. people are very judgmental. >> especially if it's the woman who cheated. >> i agree. >> and it seems like we get married later and seems like, look, you had your time, so you had your time to date. once you make that commitment you're either all in -- and it also -- once you learn there's cheating now it seems like you have a choice to get out, you need to make a decision. and that's hard for women too. am i going to see my kid 50% of the time? not being a brat, obviously but they're pooped. >> every tantrum is not bratty behavior, there's meltdowns which is what you described, exhausted, the nap, melting down. >> or hunger. >> or the manipulative tantrum, i'm not getting my way. >> in that situation, you don't want to give it attention. you want to as calmly as you can, abandon the grocery cart. get the child out to the car, let him have hesitant rum. >> they can be kicking and screaming. >> you have to stay calm. the more attention you give to that behavior. it reinforce it is and you're more likely to see it again. >> we reinforce the wrong behavior if we give in to the tantrum, we reinforcing the negative behavior. if we take a breathe and deal with our own embarrassment, scoop them out, the second they kind of take that breath and start to change, you want to say, all right, great, we're done. let's move on and you want to reinforce the good stuff. >> do you want to give them ice cream at that point because they're being good? >> no, you don't. but that's what we tend to do. >> we tend to do that. but as jen said, we want to make sure we're giving them plenty of positive attention at other times when they're not misbehaving. but you don't want to give in with ice cream or whatever. >> what if you're in a setting, they can't be making noise and they go crazy. is there anything you should do for a quick fix like right here, right now? >> there are times, right? we're at a wedding and there's a meltdown and you just need there to be moment and getting up is going to be more disruptive. >> a sucker in the mouth. >> it's not going to be something that happens all the time. >> and what if your child gets older and they're sassing back all the time. >> get rid of them. >> we have a lot of people who might want to do that. >> one of the big culprits for that is tv. if you look at the shows -- shows that are marketed for kids hanna's age, they are sassy and they laugh. >> and not a lot of strong parents. there aren't a lot of adults strong role models. you have to model for your children what you expect them to do. we as the adults have to behave the way we want them to behave. if we're sassy, they're going to be sassy. and if we're sassy with them, they're going to think it's okay. >> in the moment when they do that give them the opportunity for the redo. have some sort of nonverbal sign. let's try that again. >> thank you, ladies. one of the most shocking eliminations ever on "the voice." >> what's next for this woman who once sang back-up for michael jackson?
