from the inside, and mitt romney was quick to pounce saying the president was throwing in the white flag of surrender on getting things done. we will get reaction from senior adviser to the president's re-election campaign coming in. iphone fans flocking to apple stores across the country to be among the first to own the newest version, savannah, jealous? look what i have. >> is that incredible images. we want to begin with politics this morning. president obama facing tough questions on the campaign trail as ann romney comes to the defense of her husband. nbc's peter alexander is in west palm beach, florida this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it is a raining morning in west palm beach. florida is the biggest prize in the battleground states. it is no surprise mitt romney and president obama had duelling appearances. he tried to use the language he used for years ago as the candidate of change. it wasn't a dress rehearsal for next month's debates, president obama was in the hot spot in a spanish language tv forum in miami, taking a step back from hope and change. >> obviously the fact that we haven't been able to change the tone in washington is disappointing. i learned some lessons over the last four years. most important lesson is you can't change washington from the inside. you can only change it from the outside. >> reporter: across the state in sarasota, fired up mitt romney tried to capitalize on his remarks. >> the president today threw in the white flag of surrender again. he said he can't change washington from the inside. he can only change it from outside. we will give him that chance in november. he is going outside! >> reporter: for that to happen, romney may have to makeup significant ground in swing states. the latest nbc news "the wall street journal" marist poll shows he has a lead in wisconsin. and in iowa, romney is eight points behind, with less than seven weeks to go. in florida, the president was on the defensive for not living up to a 2008 campaign pledge to tackle immigration reform in his first year in office. >> you promise that, and a promise is a promise, and with all due respect, you didn't keep that promise. >> i am happy to take responsibility for the fact we didn't get it done, but i didn't make a promise i would get everything done 100% when i was elected as president. >> reporter: later when asked who is the real mitt romney, mr. obama took a swipe as his challenger, referencing the comments where romney wrote off 47% of americans. >> when you express an american that half the country considers itself victims, that somehow they want to be dependent on government, my thinking is maybe you haven't gotten around a lot. >> reporter: late thursday during an interview with radio iowa, mitt romney's wife attacked critics in the gop. >> stop it, this is hard, you want to try it, get in the ring. this is hard, and you know, it's an important thing that we're doing right now and it's an important election and it is time for all americans to realize how significant this election is and how lucky we are to have someone with mitt's qualifications and experience and know-how to be able to have the opportunity to run this country. >> reporter: we also know that both the president and mitt romney have been spending a lot of time, savannah, preparing for next month's debates. ann romney gave insight into one of her husband's tendency in debates, referring to debates in the primary. she said he would find her in the audience, he would look at her after each question, did i look okay, how did that sound. she loves that because obviously he cares so much. >> peter alexander, thank you. david axelrod, good to see you. >> good to see you. >> let's talk about this remark by the president that you can't change washington from the inside, you can only change it from the outside. recognizing he was trying to say it is good to get the american people involved in the process. at the same time, is this a president who's acknowledging the limits of his own political ability? >> savannah, you were in washington and you covered the president, so you know this is not a new statement on his part. what he said is exactly what you said and he said it in his remarks yesterday. he said in order to move washington and to move congress, you have to enlist the american people, and that's a lesson that he's learned over the four years. you know, that was the lesson he learned from the standoff on the debt ceiling last summer, and he has been making that point consistently. the fact that governor romney picked up on it and attacked him on it is one more example how he is cascading from one gratuitous attack to another and instead of talking about solutions to the problems we face. >> let's talk about immigration because at that forum yesterday, the president was pressed toughly by one of the moderators. he said i did not make a promise that i would get everything done 100% when i was elected as president when asked why there wasn't immigration reform in the first term. here is president obama in 2008. take a listen. >> we can't wait 20 years from now to do it, we can't wait ten years from now to do it, we need to do it by the end of my first term as president of the united states of america. and i will make it a top priority in my first year as president. >> so david, when the president says he didn't promise immigration reform as a priority, is he rewriting history a bit there? >> i don't think he said he didn't promise it as a priority, it was a priority, savannah. i was in a room in 2009 at the white house where he called together all the members of congress that supported immigration reform in the past, republicans and democrats, and he said let's lock arms and get this done, and every republican walked away because it became the policy of the republican party to walk away from immigration reform, so hopefully with the votes in november, people will say okay, let's come back to the table and get this done. but the president passed out of the house and out of the senate a dream act that was blocked by the minority of republicans in the senate on procedural grounds. he did move on the status of the dream act, the kids that were here, because their parents came here and through no fault of their own they got caught up in the immigration system. he did move on that. so there's no doubt that he has exercised leadership. now what we have to do as he said, engage the american people, move this congress along as well. >> finally, david, i have to ask you about something i noticed this last week on the campaign trail. it is a hand-to-hand combat situation, yet both campaigns seem to be trying to outdo each other with debating skills. a romney campaign spokesperson said president obama is the most gifted speaker in modern political history, it is hard to imagine anyone outscoring him in debate points. jim maceda said of romney he is quick, polished, ready with a punchy attack against the president. i guess the setting goes on with the debate, but what's going on, david. >> here is what we know. we know governor romney has been practicing for months. i think invasion of normandy took less preparation than he put into the debates. i expect he will be prepared, ready and strong in the debates and we have to be ready as well. >> sounds like you're trying to lower expectations for your guy. >> no, no, just telling you the facts, reporting the facts like you do on the "today" show. >> david axelrod, senior adviser to the reelect. >> thank you. if you tried flying american airlines in the past week, you may be among thousands of passengers that experienced maddening delays. all has to do with a labor dispute between american and its pilots union. nbc's tom costello is at reagan national airport. good morning. >> reporter: hi, willie, good morning to you. they have bankruptcy proceedings and imposed tough cuts on employees, pilots, mechanics. now they say pilot sick leave up 20% since a year ago and said the airlines, appears the pilots are imposing strict standards in flying by the books, running up minor technical issues like broken coffee pot and forcing mechanical delays. the pilots who fly for american deny there's any organized effort to slow down the airline, but delays have skyrocketed the past week, creating headaches for travelers. >> like i said, i am getting married, they are not making it easy for me. >> i am more concerned about my trip saturday to rome. has me a little freaked out. >> reporter: numbers are telling. last september, 82% of americans' flights were on time. this september, only 61% on time. even worse on time numbers this week, from 45% on time sunday to 37% monday, 45% tuesday, 54% wednesday, and more delays yesterday. american has already cancelled 300 flights and plans to cut more through october, going online to apologize to its customers. >> we understand how irritating and unfortunate this is in interrupting or delaying travel plans. we appreciate their patience and hope for their understanding. >> reporter: scott mccartney who writes "the wall street journal" middle seat column says passengers should back away from american. >> it isn't reliable, too many late flights, missed connections, too many people left stranded. >> reporter: and something else that could mean bad news for passengers. with american airlines in bankruptcy, us airways is pushing for a merger to take on united and delta. >> putting these together, you create a third airline to compete against the larger carrie carriers. good for consumers and employees. >> reporter: the country lost some of the oldest carriers. continental merged with united, northwest with delta, airtran with southwest. if us airways merges with american, it is possible, say experts, ticket prices could rise again. now, us airways denies that, says a merger would only create more options for passengers, but to pressure american airlines, us airways has already struck behind the scenes deals with american's labor unions that are better >> absolutely? >> really? not really. >> no, but it's the right thing to say. >> some people r.al is trying to draw the perfect circle. >> oh. >> it's not that easy as we're seeing there. some say it can't be done, but his teacher, the other al standing next to him begs to differ. coming up, we'll meet the self-proclaimed world freehand circle drawing champion. >> at least you're smiling about it. he'll give us a little lesson. >> not even close, al, but good try. we begin this half hour with a story that's made worldwide headlines. the wife of a deputy prison warden found living with the escaped convict who allegedly abducted her more than ten years earlier. nbc's edie magnus is here with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: after what she said was more than a decade of abuse and a stint in prison herself, bobbi parker is back with her family and speaking for the first time trying to clear her name. >> for 11 years the woman's husband never gave up hope. >> reporter: in the spring of 2005 it was a sensational story. bobbi parker, the wife of a deputy prison warden, was found on a chicken farm in east texas with a convicted killer. the murder, randolph diald had escaped from the prison back in 1994 with bobbi parker in tow. >> he bound my wrists, he bound my ankles, and he beat me with his belt. it was a very severe beating, very severe. what i remember him saying is this is nothing compared to what the people that i know can and will do to you. >> bobbi parker said she was ripped from her husband and two daughters and that convicted killer randolph diall held her hostage for more than a decade. what did he say he would do if you tried to get away? >> he would either find me or my family, and he would harm them, kill them. >> reporter: she says diall terrorized and abused her, physically, emotionally and sexually. >> it degrades you. it embarrasses you. humiliates you. it messes with you mentally. >> reporter: bobbi says she was overjoyed when authorities finally captured diall and reunited her with her husband. >> you took her back, no questions asked. >> there was no taking her back. it was to go get her and bring her back home where she belonged. >> reporter: not everyone believed she was a kidnap victim. >> how could you be gone from your children for 11 years and never contact them? [ female announcer ] those who look to fuel body and mind with the simplest of grains, they are not hard to find. just four ingredients, it all starts here. just as it was back 100 years. from the seed to the spoon, simple things go into every flake, every bite, genuine, true. the simple grains cereals from kellogg's. start simple. start right. back now with a man who truly lived on the edge. geoff mackley is a news cameraman with a passion for extreme adventure and recently put both of his talents on display when he climbed into the middle of an active volcano, at one point standing just 30 yards above the bubbling, boiling lava. geoff is with us this morning. geoff, good morning. >> good morning, how are you? >> i'm doing well. let me ask you the obvious question right out of the gate. why? why do you put yourself so close to the lava? >> well, you know, in this day and age there are very few places you can go and things you can do where you can truly say wow, and i -- i've always had the catch phrase the greatest show on earth, and whether it's a volcano or being in a category 5 hurricane or chasing tornadoes, mother nature just puts on the most amazing show. there's very few places on earth that you can actually truly go and stand and say i am the only human to have ever stood here, and such was the case with this place, so it's just a first for adventure, to do something no one else has ever done. >> we know you got about 30 yards away from that bubbling, boiling lava. how do you get down there to begin with? >> well, getting to the side is incredibly dangerous. you're talking 1,200 feet vertical. if you stacked two chrysler buildings on top of each other, that was the commute to work each morning, and had you to dodge rocks gig enough to kill you that are moving at like, you know, terminal velocity past you every few minutes, hitting the road, damaging the road. it was dangerous. standing on top of the lava wasn't standing on top of the edge of that lava pit, was not actually that dangerous. getting to that point was just incredibly dangerous. >> we see in some of these pictures you look like you're in some sort of a heat suit. can you describe what it describes like physically to be that close. >> absolutely incredible. the first day that i got to the bottom, i didn't have the heat suit, and i just simply walked to the edge and managed to stand the heat for roughly six seconds before i had to cover my face and run back, but that special heat suit was designed by someone in the fire brigade in new zealand. we also teamed that up with a breathing apparatus, exactly the same as any fire brigade would use to enter a burning building, and that is so that you're breathing fresh air. if you took one gulp of the super heated air coming off that lava, it would kill you instantly. so i was able to stand there breathing, cool, fresh air from the breathing tanks and in that heat seat you felt like you were in an oven, but it was kind of a surreal experience. you could feel the waves blasting at you, and you felt totally protected. i was able to stay there for 40 minutes in the air on the breathing apparatus ran out and as any fireman knows, scream at me, and i stood there until it ran completely out of air. such was the amazing sight i was looking at and ran clear of the lava lake and took the breathing mask off. >> real quick, geoff. >> unforgettable. >> described your fascination with volcano hunting as something like a drug. i say this with the utmost respect. are you a little bit crazy, geoff? >> no, not a little bit crazy. i take calculated risks. i've been doing this for a long, long time. it's been a 15-year quest to get to the bottom of that pit, but no one else has ever achieved, it getting that close. i'm amazed no one has, but the pictures are exactly what i had in my mind. all along i knew that's what i would come away, and i'm totally blown away. and you're right. it is like a drug. you just keep coming back because it, to be standing there looking at moulten rock boiling like water, that close. nothing -- it's indescribable. >> the pictures are just stunning. geoff mackley, a man with very high insurance premiums, thank you very much gemp we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> up next, we'll try to match this man's unique skills, drawing perfect circles freehand. that's right after this. almay primer the first step to a beautiful look a swirl of green correcting your color a twirl of lavender "...brightening your glow" together, these two colors create the perfect canvas why they're always there to talk. i love you, james. don't you love me? i'm a robot. i know. i know you're a robot! but there's more in you than just circuits and wires! uhhh. "endeavour" will pass over the golden gate bridge riding on top of the special 747. it will pass the research center in the south bay. scientists there developed the heat shield that brought the shuttle safely back home from the 25 missions. [ crowd cheering, mouse clicks ] this morning on "parenting today" how to break kids' bad habits, from thumb sucking to nail-biting. pediatrician lisa thornton has solutions for parents. good morning. >> good morning. >> how do kids develop bad habits in the first place? >> a lot is natural, thumb-sucking, it's natural, babies do it in the womb and do it when they come out because thuk-sucking is really soothing and feels good and helps babies comfort themselves. babies that suck their thumbs tend to comfort themselves more easily than those who don't suck anything. >> my eldest did that and comforted him right away. let's get to the five behavior issues a lot of parents complain about and think they have to break kids from this habit. the first one is biting. why do toddlers even go there and go there in the first place? >> so common, do it between the ages of 18 months and 3 years. developing language and don't know how to express themselves so a lot of times they will bite to say, hey, i was using that toy or i'm not ready to go. something like that. they don't communicate well. >> a frustration thing, not something necessarily that came from toothing. >> right. it's important for parents to know it doesn't signal some awful behavior problem in the future, although it is really devastate when your kid is the biter and really annoying when your kid gets bit. >> we had a couple of our parents responded to that on our facebook page. christine wrote my daughter started biting us, and we bit her back. she quit really quickly because she didn't want to be bitten. is this the right way to handle this? >> i gets it worked for her. >> yeah. >> in general, it can backfire because some people will say well, mommy bites, so it must be okay. so you've got to be careful. the best way to do it is to figure out if there's a pattern to the biting, if you can predict when your child might do it and if they do bite a child to point out to them it hurts, that we cannot bite people and we're hurting someone and allow the child to involve themselves in comforting the other child, putting band-aid on, if necessary. >> thumb-sucking is next. some people think what's so bad about this? this is self-soothing. let them go ahead and do it. is there a problem with it as the child goes older? >> you don't want a 20-year-old thumb-sucking. >> that's for sure, and it can cause dental problems. >> don't want your child sucking their thumb for too long once the teeth come in. it's a natural habit, but if it becomes a bad habit, sometimes other children will get them to stop because they may mention, hey, you're sucking your thumb, but usually it becomes a mindless thing for a lot of kids so if you remind them, if you're sucking your thumb, they can take their thumbs out. some kids need a substitute like a blankt or stuffed an map. sometimes can you substitute that and stop. >> my youngest three sons sucked their thumbs so we took athletic tape and wrapped their thumbs and they stopped. is that possibly a solution or some sort of way to prevent them or at least make them think about it. >> that's what it does. oh, i've got that athletic tape and i'll get that out. >> the next one is nose picking. very embarrassing. my 4-year-old went through a phase where he was testing me on this one, so what do you recommend parents do? >> nose picking is super common. next time in a car look at the guy next to you. might be doing it in his car, very common. >> sadly they don't outgrow it. >> some don't. kids feel like there's something up there and kids with allergies tend to pick their noses a lot more than others because there's mucous in there. keep your kid hydrated. teach them to carry tissue with them and blow their nose frequently and if you can't get them to stop, tell them there's a place for it and it's in the bathroom and wash their hands so they are not passing germs to other people. >> cracking knuckles. first of all, where is the sound coming from? >> there's gas in your joints and the gas builds up, and some people notice it more than others so they crack their knuckles because they feel like it loosens them up. >> how do you break this habit? >> you've just got to ask people to stop, you know. this is annoying. not so annoying to the cracker, but to the crackee it can be really annoying >> i like doing it. >> again, this is something that you say there's a place for that. do that in your room by yourself or something like that, but it can be really annoying to people around you. >> dr. lisa thornton, grace tips, thanks so much. coming up next, quick weekend getaways for fall right after this. >> i honk if i feel like there's danger. >> that's nasty. yesterday. we were driving into the city to do the show, and just driving along, and all of a sudden a semitruck took a right turn into our lane, and literally we had to -- well, literally i think we were like two inches apart. when you see a big semi a once in a lifetime moment. the space shuttle "endeavour" soaring over the skies of the bay area. good morning. thank you for joining us for our special coverage. i'm marla tellez. our cameras are focused on san francisco. you are getting a live look at "endeavour" as it is making its way to the bay area having left the san francisco area. it is on the modified 747. >> it is going to be incredible. the anticipation is building. this is a live look from the marin area where the people have been gathering since dawn to score a prime seat near the golden gate bridge. >> people are lined up along crissy field where they are just packing in there to get a great view. right now, we're giving you the live view as it makes its way. of course, it will be heading over the east bay walnut creek conco concord. >> this is the look at crissy field. we have seen people lining up across the bay area, as we mentioned. so many great vantage points you will see throughout the bay area. we have it featured on nbcbayarea.com. people will line up to get on the flight line for moffett field as well which will be a great vantage point. it means so much to us here in the bay area as they have actually developed the heat tiles and 747 as well. it will be amazing to see as it really starts its final journey. space shuttle "endeavour's" journey started at 7:00 this morning. >> we have bob redell with us and christie smith live for us at crissy field with the golden gate bridge set behind you. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, marla. we first got here this morning and there was fog sitting at the top of the golden gate bridge near the tower. it has burned off and turned into a beautiful day here at crissy field. the crowd is getting bigger and bigger. we are waiting to see the space shuttle "endeavour." it is hard to see. >> it is tough to see out there. we will work on her audio. we will show you the crowds. one spectacular sight will be seeing it cross so close to the golden gate bridge as it makes its way to the bay area. it is also going to be dipping down quite a bit in altitude to give a spectacular flyover. >> 1,500 feet. it will make some noise. you will be able to hear it. there is no doubt about that. its flight started at 8:00 at edwards air force base. deep in the east bay over sacramento and flew over the state capital. we have bob redell standing by live for us. >> reporter: it is getting close now. maybe 12 minutes. here's what i want to tell you. good morning. we are right next to the loud speaker where they are announcing how many people are here. let's give them time to acknowledge the crowd. how many people? several thousand people out here. they are expecting the shuttle to fly over 200 feet here in five-to-ten minutes. we have beau, one of the astronauts, not on "endeavour," but other flights. what is it like to see this come to an end? >> i feel proud that we have been able to do such a thing as fly the shuttle. i'm glad that we have been able to gain all the knowledge and do things that the shuttle enabled us to do. one of the things is the space station. that is almost 1 million pounds in orbit. people have been in the space station continuously. we know all about the hubble and other large craft that the shuttle maintained or put into orbit. >> reporter: your colleague out here, dr. steven robinson said it was sad to see a miracle. it is such a testament because of the role nasa ames played here. people don't realize the shape was developed here and what else? >> the heat tile. the temperature of reentry is over 1,000 degrees. you need a good insulator to keep from burning the shuttle up. >> reporter: you have the simulator here. you came out to train. when you see the 747, you notice it has an odd fin shape in the back. those were developed here so the 747 pilot could piggyback a shuttle? >> because of the turbulence that comes off the shuttle, the normal tail was not very effective. they had to put the special out-riggers on to give more stability to the 747. >> reporter: i don't see your camera. >> i have been talking to people and signing pictures. i don't have a camera with me. >> reporter: beau, thank you very much. congratulations. you want to come to the flight line. it is quite a crowd. you have people going at least 100 or 200 yards. you cannot see left because of the trailer in front of us. if you look down there, another 300 yards. several thousand people here at nasa ames. as we heard the announcer say, we are probably t-5:00. they were saying it would be at 1,500 feet. wheels up and 200 feet across the runway. it will be quite a sight to see the massive 747 with the "endeavour" on board as it continues for los angeles. laura, marla. >> it is amazing to watch history. thank you, bob. we understand "endeavour" just passed over walnut creek in the east bay this morning. now it is headed over the oakland airport. quite spectacular as it does arrive. >> we mentioned the site over the golden gate bridge, lots of people have gathered as our christie smith is there with the look at the crowds there. they started early out there. >> reporter: they did. we first got here at 4:30. there was a bit of fog over the towers of the golden gate bridge. it has turned into an absolutely beautiful day here at crissy field. it is hard to tell how big the crowds are because people are scattered this morning. we counted at least 1,000 just pouring in. obviously, there is still room. the parking lot is completely filled up. everybody waiting to see the space shuttle "endeavour" strapped to the modified 747. you can see traffic is still moving up there. that was one of the concerns of law enforcement. as it goes by, they don't want people to stop and stare. some people in the east bay may have already seen it, as you mentioned, first by oakland and walnut week as it made its way to sacramento. back up to marin. we are waiting for it to go oceanside and come back over the golden gate bridge. out in california, we can't see these launches. they want to see the next best thing. i wanted to mention one of the first here that saw it, it was still o'dark 100. why did you want to see this? >> this is a great place to come. i never saw a shuttle launch. might as welcome here and pay respect to the people that have been on the shuttle. it is a remarkable landmark. >> reporter: and stephanie, you just made friends. you are together. you went to see the giants when they went to the world series. this is another big thing for san francisco? >> it is part of the fun in living here. we get all of this and this great weather and view. how can you resist? >> reporter: what will you do? >> wave and say thank you. >> reporter: thank you. as you see, binoculars here and camera. old-school camera. before we go, we want to keep our eye on what is going on. i have a second assignment here. that is from my photographer steve. he is shooting it on video when it passes by, i'm supposed to take a picture. we will see how it goes. a lot of excited folks as we wait to see "endeavour" come by. reporting live, christie smith, back to you. >> there will be a lot of picture taking today. we want to see your photos as well for the once in a lifetime event. you can post directly to our facebook page. everybody wants to get the perfect shot. >> tweets are going out like crazy. >> nasa retired "endeavour" and the rest of the fleet last year after completing the portion of the international space station. >> it went on 25 missions, including a trip to complete the international space station. that is a lot of oil checks. >> bolted on to the modified 747. it weighs 75 tons. >> can you imagine the pilot flying that? and just seeing the enthusiasm of the crowd. it will be going pretty low as bob redell mentioned. they will hear the roar of the thunder of that as it makes history as it approaches the final flight before it makes its way to southern california. it will eventually be put on display. >> we are giving you a live look from marin headline camera to show you the picturesque shot. >> can you imagine how many photographers are out there trying to get the epic incredible shot at the golden gate bridge to see the "endeavour" flying close. we are moments away. >> and from the golden gate bridge, it will make its way to the peninsula to nasa ames where thousands are there waiting to see that fly as low as 200 feet. >> it is really cool to see the flight path it has been taking. it is the shuttle system of the america, of the people, and so many people grew up and appreciating and seeing all of the shuttle flights and studying them in school. it is a great way to really thank the country as well for its support. >> and "endeavour" was built by spare parts. used a lot of the leftover parts from "discovery" and "atlantis." $1.7 billion. >> it came from our scientists at the ames center with the heat shields. we actually have some astronauts out there with bob redell this morning that are talking about when they actually flew it. quite amazing. >> children named to the "endeavour." it was a contest. the name had to be named for an historic vessel. it was named after a ship that chartered the seas in 1857 by captain james cook. >> "endeavour" brought the unity to space. that is what made it the int international in the international space station. seeing it here over the bay area. >> once it passes through the bay area, it is headed to l.a. where that will become its permanent home at the california science center in downtown los angeles. it will be on display as of october 30th. >> all right. we have a lot of great vantage points across the bay area as we watch it fly over the state capital. your small box there, that is crissy field. that is where christie smith is live out there. you can see it coming into view. this is where it will make its spectacular venture over the golden gate bridge. quite a feat in itself. >> if we can see it from crissy field right now, we will see it fly over the golden gate bridge any second now. >> it is amazing to be able to witness history. hasn't the weather cooperated? nasa delayed the flight by about an hour just to make sure the fog wasn't going to be a factor. it doesn't seem to be this morning, which is perfect timing for the spectacular flyover that we're about ready to see. cool to see it from the east bay across. so many different vantage points. >> absolutely. rob is taking a look at the forecast for us. thank goodness the fog stayed away today. i think we learned the reason why they held back the flight by an hour. there is a live look at crissy field. you have the shuttle "endeavour" on top of the 747 about to make its pass. look how the skies are beautifully cleared across the bay area. >> the clouds have parted for us on this great day. isn't that wonderful? it really, really is. can you imagine the view they would have as well? we are talking about seeing it go over the golden gate bridge and how spectacular it is. no doubt pictures taken inside. >> there are delays at local airports because of the no-fly zones issued by the. by the faa. i bet people will cheer out there, christie smith. >> reporter: people are saying we're going to clap and scream. it is silent out here. people taking paictures. a lot of wow and pointing. we are starting to hear the clapping. they were so excited to see it come by. a lot of people saying they want to pay respects as it does its final flight into retirement. it came from the marin side and headed toward san francisco. right now it is over the presidio. if steve can keep an eye on it there. it will turn it back around. we hear it is possible and do a second pass. but people just very excited to see it this morning. we are waiting to see what it does next. we did hear an eruption of cheers and that sort of thing. it has kind of disappeared into the hills. there it is again. it keeps flying south. you know, people really got what they came for. they were excited about it and we're finally seeing it. people say we don't see launches here in california. we are being allowed to say good-bye as it flies off into the distance. a lot of excited people here this morning. really big crowds as well. >> a homecoming of sorts for the california-made aircraft. it is. nostalgic and history. there is the tower there. you can see plenty of cloud cover there. the fog, not completely clear, but as it made its way over the golden gate bridge, crystal clear. >> didn't it seem to part at just the right places for us? thank you, mother nature, for cooperating for us this morning. it is spectacular to see. it is so amazing. seeing so many parents out there who were bringing their children who were not alive when "endeavour" took the journey. the whole space shuttle program. history being made. >> the triplets are out there. >> they are out there somewhere with brent this morning trying to give them a little play-by-play. we will explain it one day of the program. >> historical and educational. >> and somewhat emotional for people as well. people grew up seeing this and seeing how it all happened and what has happened with the program. all good things must come to an end. we're happy it is ending here in california as it makes its way home to where it was built. >> currently it just left the golden gate bridge. if you are just joining us, it will head down the peninsula to nasa ames. moffett field is where we have bob redell. he is down there standing by. bob, you there? we saw it fly over the golden gate bridge. how is the anticipation down there? >> reporter: let's take a look. you look to the left and the flight line, you are looking at the flight line there. there is another half amount of people. you have several thousand who came out to nasa ames to the northerly direction and head south across the area where it continues on to los angeles. we were talking about this earlier. they were saying they expected it to be a low flyover of 1,500 feet. it could be as low as 300 or 200 feet. you can imagine a 747, which we have seen taking off from sfo. coming in at that high speed with the wheels up with the massive space shuttle on top. if you look at everyone here, you have the world's best cameras. it's like the paparazzi. quick question. good morning. why did you feel like you had to come out here today? >> i went to nasa in florida to try to see the "endeavour" launch, but i missed it because it was delayed. i want to see it fly past. i love the space program. >> reporter: next best thing. how about you, kiddo? >> i came out here because i just wanted to see the "endeavour." >> reporter: did you follow the space shuttle program when you were younger when it was in operation? do you remember it? >> not really. >> reporter: this is quite an event. you have several thousand people out here. actually, they had music playing until a few moments ago. we're getting announcements. hold on. he's telling us what we already know. it is over san francisco and heading south. if you look at the flight path, it will head over the pacific and cut back in over wood side and that area and come down the peninsula and come in from a northerly direction heading south across the tarmac at moffett field. we are just minutes away. we will bring it to you live. marla. >> it is minutes away from you. we saw it pass over the golden gate bridge and heard the thrill of the crowd at crissy field. it is interesting. an awe seems to fall over the crowd as they take it all in and realize the historic moment. >> it seemed to take a few seconds. >> from what we understand, it is coming back over crissy field. let's check back in with christie smith. what do you see? >> reporter: good morning. i want to stay out of the way so you can see what we are seeing here. that is it is coming back and heading right toward the golden gate bridge. still here with the crowds at crissy field. they are so excited. a lot of people telling them this made them feel proud of their country and made them feel very patriotic. people clapping and taking pictures. some people left the first time it passed thinking that was it. here it comes. here it comes again. it's heading right over what everyone wanted to see. they wanted to s it pass the golden gate bridge. it looks like we're about to see it now. a lot of people telling us, i had to take the day off work. i had to do what i had to do to get down here to see history in making. i want to be quiet here to see it. >> there are no toward describe what we're seeing. it is remarkable. >> it is. >> this is history. it is not going to fly anymore. it has been so many places. christie, we can hear the roar from "endeavour" or i should say the jet. how loud is it out there? >> reporter: it is a low hum. i didn't say that. they were really keeping their eyes on it. it did a u-turn and came back. people were so excited. the sound of the crowd was louder than the sound of the plane. they were excited to see it come by. it was interesting. a couple of people told me that they actually got a little choked up by this and started to cry. it made them so proud to see it go on the final mission. they did not know they would feel that way. it touched a lot of emotions. there it goes again. we saw it do it once. it came back a second time and it is on the way past the presidio. it was kind of exciting to be part of history. >> as well it should be. it is emotional for people. they are tied to it. they probably remember it from their childhood as well. what an extra treat to see it pass by the golden gate bridge once more. thank you, christie. you know it will travel down along the peninsula this morning. we have been talking about we get the chance to stop and view it. you don't want that when you are on the roadways. we have to keep things moving. mike. we expect to see a different traffic pattern. the golden gate bridge showed a lot of slowing. i have a look at the view from the camera in palo alto. we can see actually from university avenue and 101. we turn south to moffett field. that is what you are looking at here. 101 off the bottom of the screen. the air space above nasa and moffett field will be visible from the freeways. we have the crowds showing a good deal of slowing. 237 west out of sunnyvale. heading up to moffett. and as this jet and the shuttle, of course, make their way along the area into the south bay, they cross over a lot of residential areas and freeways. you are aware about this if you are traveling to the area. if you have to break-away from the coverage, i'm sorry. these are historic photos. we hope you watch the roadways. we warned them. we watch for log jams. we expect that to happen after this is over. stick around. there will be a lot of folks leaving the area flooding the south bay freeways as well. we have a lot of disturbance on the surface streets. that is quite a sight. if i was driving right now, that would be a temptation for me as well. back to you. >> no doubt. most certainly have to play it safe there and allowing extra time after the event is good advice. thank you, mike. >> it will make its descent into moffett field. nasa ames has great ties to space shuttle "endeavour." you just heard bob redell down there. bob, we have our eye on it right now. it is minutes away from you. can you hear us, bob? >> reporter: yes, it is. it just passed south san francisco. maybe i'm telling something you knew. it is on the way southbound here. look to the right and you see the thousands of people on the flight line at moffett field to witness the tremendous event waiting for the space shuttle on the back of the 747 to come from the north to the south across the runway. dr. robinson, can we catch you? >> a short amount of time. >> reporter: you flew on the "endeavour?" >> i did. >> reporter: what is it like for you? >> i can't wait to see her again. it is a real point of pride for everybody here at nasa ames. folks at ames developed many of the technologies to allow the shuttle to work at all. we are all taxpayers. we paid for that shuttle. this is like the parade fly by to honor it. >> reporter: i wonder what your favorite moment was being behind the controls of her when you flew her that one time. >> my favorite moment was everywhere. all of the moments between the time they closed the hatch and opening it after landing. every second. >> reporter: i envy you. where is your camera? >> i'm not going to take pictures. i want to soak it in. >> reporter: you don't want to talk during this? >> this is something to be experienced and remembered forever. >> reporter: doctor, thank you very much. best of luck to you. i'm curious of what you think. i'll talk to you afterwards. dr. robinson talked to us earlier. can you imagine the massive airplane. the 747 with the large spaceship underneath it and coming here above the flight deck. originally 1,500 feet, but now 300 or 200. with wheels up coming across here will be a sight. something that will be awe inspiring. we wonder if they do a loop around. we hope like they did in crissy field. maybe they will give us the same honor. hopefully the pilots of the 747 will see that and recognize it as another tribute to the work of the people that worked here at nasa ames to get the space shuttle program up in the air. laura, marla. >> the people behind that gate there have a great advantage point. christie smith described it as being a little more quiet. >> she said it was a low hum and the roar of the crowd was louder than the jet itself. and where bob redell is, 8,000 plus packed in there at nasa ames. >> a whole lot of clear skies for us. rob mayeda joins us. nasa delayed it for fear of fog cover. >> we had the patchy low clouds. they were on the ocean facing side of the coast. we have clear skies and visibility of about ten miles as "endeavour" approaches moffett field. bob talked about the concrete runways and you will get a lot of sound bouncing off. if you have been to air shows and the large c-130 passes by with the blue angels, this is a whole different animal. it will throttle back and guns the engines and puts on the show for the people there. >> we will continue to check in with bob redell. >> absolutely. the weather is cooperating on the last day of summer. fall upon us tomorrow. mother nature did us good today, you might say. >> what a great way to wrap up summer to watch it over the bay area. one of the greatest vista points as it travels across the country. i thought it was very symbolic over arizona where gabrielle giffords was able to see it as well as her husband manned the last mission on it. >> mark kelly requested that for his wife. the shuttle "endeavour" is passing along the san mateo coastline. of course, getting closer to nasa ames in mountain view. it is the fifth and youngest of the fleet. it was built to replace the shuttle "challenger" that we lost in the tragic accident that took the lives of sevens. here it is today. the predecessor. >> that is an emotional tie for people. remembering the shuttle system. knowing where you were when "challenger" happened as well. seeing the rebirth of everything that went on as well. >> it is. it would be amazing to hear from the doctor that bob had talked to that actually manned it. understandably, he wants to take a moment for himself to take it all in. >> as christie smith said, people in san francisco along crissy field actually brought to tears. patriotism at its finest. >> and not even expecting it. we're trying to give you the best vantage point across the bay area. we are bringing it to you live on nbcbayarea.com. there will be so many pictures taken. we would love to see yours. you can use #nbcbayarea. we love to see your pictures @nbcbayarea. bob redell, it's coming in. there it is. >> reporter: there it is, you guys. just flying over hangar one here. we thought this would be over the runway itself. it looks like it is going over 101 and heading south. will she turn around and give us a fly by over the runway as a lot of people were expecting? we don't know. it caught everyone by surprise because hangar one was so large. it was obstructed from view until we heard her go by. a little anti-climatic in that respect. everybody had to do a 180. she is heading south toward san jose. she will not turn back to our direction. come back! come back! she was quite low in the air. probably more in the 1,500 feet range. let me talk to this gentleman here. were you expecting that? >> no, i wasn't expecting that. that was awesome. absolutely awesome. incredible. >> reporter: we thought it would be -- >> we thought it was over here tan came over here. >> reporter: you need a neck brace from the whiplash? >> i think so. >> oh, it's over there. >> reporter: hey, going down 101. she is heading west to the ocean and head on south to los angeles. what about you, sir? did you catch her on your camera? >> yeah. >> reporter: how many shots? >> probably 30 or 40 or 50. >> reporter: let's see what you got. why did you feel the need to come out here today? >> end of an era. i grew up watching this thing take off. >> reporter: did you go to the launches? >> i went to the second-to-last launch. >> reporter: you are a die hard. what is the allure? >> i have been attracted to the space program. i'm a pilot. aerospace is a hobby. >> reporter: you are a shutterbug. nice shot. nice having you here. there you have it. probably about ten seconds of viewing time as she came across hangar one there. her view was obstructed for a while. headed south and i don't want rob to turn around. she is clearly heading out to the ocean for her trip to los angeles where she will do flying there and then eventually ending up in a science museum. we talked with dr. steve robinson here. he flew the "endeavour." he said it is sad that a miracle would end up in the museum. what a testament to the work of the people at nasa ames to get the shuttle program in place. >> we all have to retire. what about you?
