captions paid for by nbc-universal television good morning. welcome to "today" on a sunday. i'm lester holt. >> i'm jenna wolf. talk about an over achieving multi-tasker. aside from his duties as the duke of cambridge, prince william is also -- also prince william, also a search and rescue pilot for the royal air fors. this morning actually put those skills to work and we're going to tell you how he did it just ahead. a very interesting and brave heroic mission. >> a knight in shining armor in that mission. a real ordeal in egypt for three students. they had been jailed a week ago during a protest accused of throwing firebombs off a roof top at egyptian security forces. on thursday a judge ordered them released, and now they're home. we're hearing more about their time in prison. we're going to talk about one of those students in just a moment. plus, we also have breaking news on the presidential front as the new hampshire union leader has announced their endorsement. it's also a crucial boost in the nation's first primary state. we're going to tell you who earned their nod and what impact it will have on the race. then in our next half hour an update on something you and i decided to tackle. learning a new skill or hobby. it was a challenge we accepted a couple of years ago. something a lot of adults are choosing to do later in life. learning a new language was something i had always wanted to do. >> as well as apparently learning how to stand up and sit down at a very rapid rate. >> that's part of the method. >> i was never very musically inclined growing up, but from spending so much time around you, our offices are right next to each other, and listening to you play your bass guitar all the time, i actually picked up on that as well. >> we do want to begin, though, with the homecoming for those three american students detained in cairo this week. they were arrested last sunday accused of throwing malitaf cocktails off the roof during a protest in tahrir square. after a week of uncertainty in jail, they are released and back in the u.s. joining us now is one of the students, derek sweeney, and his mother, joy. good morning to both of you. thanks for joining us. >> good morning. >> good morning, lester. >> derek, what's it like to be home? >> it's really wonderful. the world is beautiful. >> and we mentioned you've got some stories to tell. there's a picture of the three of you that was sent out this week after you were arrested. you were the tallest one on the right, and in front of you -- at one point one of the pictures it has a bag of supplies for malitaf cocktails that were accused of using. what was going through your mind at that time? >> that was perhaps the scariest moment of my life. i was not sure whether i would get to see america, my family, or my loved ones again. i actually fainted right after that. the only time i recall fainting in my life. it was very, very scary. >> as we noted there were materials for bomb making. you were accused along with the other two students of throwing these off a roof. were you even on the roof top at the time of all this? >> no, that was one of the strangest things. didn't know where that came from. we were never on a roof top, and also, we did not ever handle or deal or throw malitov cocktails. >> were you participating in the protest in any way? >> we were at the protest. we were there. we didn't even chant the slogan. it was in arabic. couldn't understand most of it. we were there, but not really participating. >> listen, at one point you do end up in jail, but before that you were held in captivity somewhere else, and i understand those are the most harrowing hours. tell us about those first several hours in captivity. >> yeah. the first hours, they -- well, they threatened to porous with gasoline. they put our shirts up over our heads so we couldn't see where we were at all, and they hit us in the face and the back of the neck a lot. then we spent about seven hours in the fetal position with our hands behind auerbach handcuffed in the dark, and they were behind us with guns saying that if we moved at all, they would shoot us, and at that point i sort of -- i just recalled that existence is love and everything is beautiful. it was very scary. >> and you're telling that story, and i'm watching your mom, joy, the look of worry across your face again. what was it like for those days trying to find out the latest on derek, his whereabouts, and whether he would get out? >> oh, my goodness. it was such an emotional roller coaster. you know, then to find out the story behind it, i mean, i foou that the entire time i was praying, everybody that i knew was praying. i got prayers messages from people, total strangers that would stop me at the grocery store and saying i've been praying for your son's safe return, and our prayers are finally answered, and we're so grateful. >> i have to assume you did some praying yourself. was there a point where when you think this homecoming might not happen, and this thing could go sideways in a hurry? sdoo there was a point when that possibility seemed quite logically likely, though i never really allowed it to enter my thinking too much. >> well, lisp, we're glad you're back together. i know you have a delayed thanksgiving meal, and we thank you for taking time to spend it with us this morning. >> thank you. >> thank you wrrn. >> derek and joy sweeney. now here's jenna. >> a spirited young man. lester, thank you. sfwlimplgts now to the breaking news about prince william and confirmation from buckingham palace this morning that he flew in a helicopter rescue mission that saved people from a sinking ship off the british coast. annabelle roberts joins us live from london with details. annabelle, good morning. >> reporter: yes, as you say last night prince william took part in a rescue mission in extremely difficult conditions. as you say, he is a search and rescue pilot based in north wales, and on this occasion he was the co-pilot, part of a crew called on to deal with a cargo ship which was sinking. his crew rescued two people from the ship during the night and took them back to his base in wales, which is called ref valley. the crew is russian, five are still missing, and two inflatable rafts have been found in the area. he was a part of a big team last night. altogether four helicopters took part along with two coast guard vessels and some ships that responded to the may day call. it's thought the ships that were being rescued, the hull had cracked in the atrocious weather, and the staff were taking on water. jenna. >> what's prince william's life like at the base on a normal case? >> reporter: well, he gets no special treatment up there. he is often said that this work is very important to him. his grandmother, the queen, visited him there earlier this year just before his wedding in april, actually, and he demonstrated then to her his skills as a pilot. he has done everything with his training that everyone else is required to do. there has been no shortcuts for him. kate lives up there with him. they live reasonably quietly in a remote farmhouse, though return to london quite often. jenna. >> ann kwa bell roberts, thank you very much. now once again, here lester. >> now to a busy weekend in politics with unrest overseas in pakistan and egypt. the announcement this morning is the key endorsement in the race for president. here to take us through it all, david gregory, good morning. >> good morning, lester. >> a couple of big foreign policy challenges for the president right now. chief among them, the killing of 24 pakistani troops apparently by an errant nato attack. the bhous being very careful in how it reacts to all this. this is a big deal given osama bin laden was killed on pakistani soil without their permission or their knowledge. what's this mean for the white house right now? >> well, it's very difficult, as you say, because the relationship is already strained. there is going to be some reprecussion to the relationship. there's talk about closing various bases for drones that fly over particularly the tribal areas to target terrorists by the united states, terrorists that come into afghanistan and target u.s. troops. look, it's not just a question of it being tense. there are likely to be further raids by the united states, by nato troops into pakistan to deal with these safe havens that are operating there, again, where they target u.s. troops by coming over the border. this is just going to underline that difficulty. >> second big foreign policy challenge. the arab spring, it's been a challenge for the administration all along trying to measure this fine line between dealing with the uprisings and democracy and freedom. in egypt right now where the u.s. had really supported the uprising against mubarak, what happens now as that agreement seems to be falling apart? >> well, again, the key to the u.s. egyptian relationship is the strong military to military ties. that becomes so important because of the institutional relationship that exists between the u.s. military and the egyptian military that's to keep order. the political question is a separate matter, and it's prigt a separate track. we as the united states want to encourage democratic reform, but this means institution building. it means trying to deal with a new administration that may not necessarily be friendly to all u.s. interests. this is going to be a very much take it one step at a time kind of approach, and much more difficult to manage, as i think everybody understood even after those first images in tahrir square. >> quick turn to election politics. the union leader in new hampshire, prominent influential nap there announces it is endorsing newt gingrich in the republican race. how important is this endorsement traditionally? >> feels like the 1990s all over again. it is important. in 2008 it was john mccain. it's a conservative newspaper. it carries a lot of weight in new hampshire. this is very important for newt gingrich who is trying to emerge as the alternative to mitt romney, the more conservative alternative. that's really the problem here for romney, right? his conservative credentials. this, his most important state. he is up in the polls in new hampshire, romney. he was the governor of massachusetts, of course, so this is his proving ground to really show that he is on a march to win the nomination. >> all right, david gregory. david, thanks very much. >> thanks a lot. time now for a check of this morning's other headlines. for that we turn to nbc's darlene roderick. darlene, good morning. >> good morning, jenna,
