The president staying silent on the matter for now. Were live in south korea with the latest. And later, our sunday sitdown with Julia Louisdreyfus. Whats new on veep, her role. And doing political satire in the days of donald trump. We all make fun of the other guy. Our sunday sitdown. And harry smith a bit later in the show. Lets begin this morning with Vice President pence arrives hours ago in south korea where tensions are high after north korea test fired a Ballistic Missile that exploded just moments after launch. Good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. Just hours after a massive military parade of missiles and hardware, north korea carried out a missile test, firing whats believed to be a medium rung or Ballistic Missile from its east coast. U. S. Officials confirms for nbc news that it failed. That it detected the launch, traced it. And it blew up almost immediately. And this came just after kim jongun had paraded his arsenal through. In his parade he had showed up what appeared to be a new type of intercontinental Ballistic Missile designed to reach the United States. Now that north korea launched something is not a surprise. Theres been speculation that Nuclear Tests were in the works. Whats unclear is the reaction to it particularly from the u. S. President trump has said that north korea is a problem that will be dealt with. But so far on this test, hes been quiet. With only a brief statement acknowledging its failure from the defense secretarygeneral james madis. Vice president mike pence is in a tenday tour of the region. Hes in seoul now and meets with south korean officials about u. S. Security concerns. So far, willie, he has barely acknowledged this test. His spokesman said frankly the response is not worth extending the resources so this whob the official White House Position to deny north korea the attention its seeking. Were seeing less brash white house on this. Jane, thank you so much. Ju juan, thank you for being with us. Grng mop. We did see this massive parade through pyongyang with what some experts are saying a volume of missiles they didnt think narc actually had yesterday. But then thats followed but by a missile test. What should we take away from what we saw in north korea . I think we have a regime displaying its power. A whole range of missiles to include three types icbms, intercotton mental Ballistic Missiles. Even though the failed missile test is an embarrassment, it wasnt the nuclear test that many were anticipatinging. It does demonstrate this is a regime that continues on its march. As well as a nuclear program. So the clock is ticking here. And i think the military operated was an attempt to demonstrate strength internal any and externally. Juan, i want to take a step back for our viewers and ask you how you feel about north korea. Many people over the years has said its a paper tiger propped up only from the generosity of china. You see the tests again and again, you look at what Ambassador Nikki Haley has said that north korea is the absolute number one threat to the United States. How do you think about north korea . I think north korea is the National Security wildcard. It presents the deepest and most dangerous problems. You have a rogue state thats developing Nuclear Components thats been shown to be willing to take both south korea and the world to the brink of war. And that even if it doesnt have the latest capabilities, the maximum capabilities, certainly has conventional capabilities that could do huge damage to seoul. And it is a regime that is so sort of unnerved that can create instability in the region. And so, this is a real problem. And the clock is ticking. The clock is really ticking here on the program. And youve seen the Trump Administration trying to change the calculus a bit. Saying we dont have time for strategy of strategic patience anymore. Thats why youve seen them trying to not only pressure china, but also position forces in a way to change the dynamics. Weve seen Vice President pence over there in seoul. Weve seen President Trump trying to exert influence on china. Asking them to do something about korea. What options does the United States have here . Well, the United States has several options obviously working with its allies, south korea, japan working with china and russia to try to pressure and restrain the regime. The goal here is to try to slow if not stop the nuclear advancements. And the big ticket here, can we get china which is the lifeline for the north korean regime, economically, diplomatically, even militarily, at the end of the day, can we get china to exert influence . Are they willing . And at the end of the day are they capable of changing the regimes behavior. Thats why youve seen so much focus on china itself as a linchpin in terms of changing what happens on the korean peninsula. Happy easter to you. Happy easter to you. President trump is dealing with backlash over another issue here at home. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell live in West Palm Beach on his easter morning with us. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. Just picking up on your conversation, the president does have his deputy National Security visor here hes spoken with military leaders and the Vice President on World Affairs but this does not free the president of heat at home with protests around the country venting frustrations. Peaceful, it was not. In brooklyn, california, saturday clashes between demonstrators both for and against the president. Angry words. Scuffles, emotions boiled over. A string of arrests. While that got out of hand, a more focused message around the country were marching to demand that donald trump lease his tax returns. Reporter organized protests promoted as tax marches brought people together. Somebodys got to start to hold this man accountable. Reporter armed with signs and celebrity sightings. Actress Debra Messing in new york. We want to see his tax returns . Why . Because we want to see what they show. Reporter reporter democratic politicians took on the president. It was resistance that did that. When we fight, we can win. Reporter in President Trumps florida backyard, West Palm Beach. Every other president has shown their tax returns i think theres something that they wants to hide. Reporter in washington, d. C. , marchers went past monuments. As candidate trump he refused and claim head would open his books when irs completes its audits. Does answer the audit is finished, it will be released. Reporter the president maintains he shar s will he paye of tax. But white house officials now say dont hold your breath waiting to see his w2s. Hes not going to release his tax returns. We litigated this all through the election. People didnt care. They voted for him. Reporter and just a note, willie. The president we know is an avid user of twitter but he seems to have had a president ial pause. He tweeted friday early in the day and not at all on saturday. Of course it is Easter Sunday. There is no official schedule for the president , but there is an expectation that he will likely change Church Services with his family. They do belong to a church here in palm beach where he and melania were married and barron was baptized. Willie. Weve become accustomed to those saturday morning tweets. Nothing on this easter weekend. Kelly, thank you. Chuck todd is moderate of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. Good morning, willie. Lets pick up the question of tax returns its a question that has kungs over donald trump since he got into the campaign two years ago. Almost laughed at the suggestion, we dont have to put outer our tax returns. Is there any new pressure that he might actually provide information what hes doing in his Business Life . Look. If we ever see his tax returns and i do think we will at some point, it is going to be because some Government Entity forced them into the public square. Right. Is it a subpoena from one of the russian investigations on capitol hill . Thats possible. Or is it a movement among, you know, there have been some state legislatures that have proposed the idea of tying a release of the tax returns to the ability to get on the ballot to run. So, maybe it doesnt happen until 2020. And he files for reelection in various states. Maybe one of those states that have a Democratic Legislature forces it that way. But i think were going to see it. I dont think he will ever voluntarily do it. I think if it happens it will be some Government Entity that forces it. A reminder the irs said he could put them out despite the fact that he says hes under audit. Another question of transparency. Ed you remember, President Trump said barack obama was the least transparent president of all time. He talked about draining the swamp. Changing the way things are done in washington, d. C. But on friday, it was announced that the white house would not make public its visitors logs. Can you explain why that is important, chuck and why they are made public historically . Well look, its only recent history, willie, as president obama was the first one to release those visitor logs. But they had a lot of exceptions there there were ways, there were plenty of logs that didnt get released that they had different waivers that people would get oh, no, this cant be public, this cant be public. So it was a modified it was sometimes transparent, but it was more than had ever been done before. The argument that the white house made before, saying this isnt fully transparent. Yeah, its better than before and future president s wont be away with not doing it. It turns out the Trump Administration thinks they can get away with it. At the end of the day, if they didnt face the pressure to face tax returns, why do we think theyre going to feel the pressure to do this. Chuck, happy easter to you, my friend. We will be watching meet the press where chuck is joined by jack reid, john kelly and senator john mccain. Other headlines making thus this morning, tens of thousands of christians have flocked to the vatican to celebrate easter mass. And hear pope francis deliver the message from the balcony of st. Peters basilica. They braved heavy security to get there the including metal detectors and armed police up on the rooftops. And the worlds most talked about giraffe april finally has given birth to a little male calf. Nice easter weekend. Weve been enjoying. Most of the country enjoying nice warm temperatures. This area of High Pressure sitting near bermuda. Its a bermuda high and that southwest wind helps to warm up temperatures 20 to 30 degrees above average. New york 84, boston 82, columbusie high of 74. Even chicago in the lower 70s today, heading farther south. Temperatures not as warm, above average, still above nonetheless with temperatures in the lower 80s. We do have a cool front which is eventually going to cool things down along the east coast and going to trigger isolated stronger storms. Thats a look at your weathe good morning and happy easter. We are waking up to some fairly cool yet chilly temps in some areas. South bay waking up to 55 degrees, trivalley at 53 degrees. All right, dylan and i are ready to whip through the highs and lows of the week, shall we . Lets do it. The first high goes to President Trumps high opinion of the dessert menu at his maralago estate in florida. Last week, the president welcomed china cheese president xi to maralago for a couple days of meetings. President trump interrupted to sign off on the air strike on syria. In an interview this week, the president gave a play by play recap of his decision taking time especially to highlight the big beautiful dessert. I was sitting at the table. We had finished dinner. Were now having dessert. And we had the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake that youve ever seen. And president xi was enjoying it. And i said, mr. President , let me explain something to you. This is during dessert. I said, weve Just Launched 59 missiles heading to iraq. Headed to syria . Yes, heading toward syria. First of all, he got so caught up talking about the beautiful dessert, he said the wrong country but we knew what he meant, he meant syria there. But in the middle of an air strike, obviously a very serious thing to talk about, to pause and plug the dessert menu at your club. Its extraordinary. Im curious to taste the chocolate cake to see if it was worth all that. Well, it was big. Apparently there was a vanilla glaze. The vanilla glades. You had to see the chinese president with this cake, amazing. The way one brother and sister felt this week about punishment handed down by their mother. After an apparent fight between the two, mom decided not to send them to their rooms separately or take away the ipad. She was much more creative than the rest of us. All she needed was a tshirt and a slow jam. Im going to make you all hold hands now. You can hear mom telling them they need to hold hands when they slow dance. I guarantee whatever they did to get in trouble it, wont happen again. I will say, if you have kids, they look like, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, between the two of them it, that range, you do sort of have to get creative with new ways. I think thats a harmless punishment. Nobody wants to do it again. And they were completely miss miserable . Is that right . Shes narrating the whole thing. The next high goes to 7yearold gianessa wride of utah. Her school was holding a crazy hair day competition when the kids come in with their hair all crazy. Gianessa suffers from alopecia. A condition her mom noticed in january when her daughters hair began to fall out. Before long, she had lost all of her beautiful brown hair. What do you do on crazy hair day . Well, mom had a plan. Moms always have a plan. Together, mother and daughter decorated gianessas head with jewel stickers is making elaborate floral designs and a beautiful blingy owl. Thats so cool. She doesnt wear wigs they make her head itch. The sparkly look much cooler anyway. Her classmates loved it. She won the contest and the school renamed the celebration crazy head day. Thats so suite. I love what she said after. She said, i was sadat first when i lost my hair, but now i love being bald. I can do things that other kids cant do. Only a kid can do it. I just love the mom. Moms are the best. Youre a mom now. You always find a solution for your kid. So cool. Our final logos to the sag in the middle of mc hammers genie pants in the 80s. Were in the spirit thanks to San Jose University assistant football coach Alonzo Carter who also happened to be hammers lead dancer for five years back in the day. Some coaches inspire their players with speeches. Others by tapping the magic of the 190 megahit you cant touch this. Cant touch this youre just waiting for the moment there. One of the coaches was so psyched he just got up and ran away. I like the guy in the back jumping with excitement. Funny thing, none of those kids on that team, kids theyre in college right now were alive then. If he broke out and danced it, they didnt know what the dance is. Who is this guy . Who is hammer . Coming up next, our sunday sitdown with Julia Louisdreyfus thaws starteded from snl many and took her from seinfeld to veep. Where to go, and how to work around your uc. It does look like the north bay is expected to see some light rain first and then it will become widespread by early afternoon. If we take a live look at the Doppler Radar, you can actually see the system sitting off shore. The good news, its not a very strong system so were not expecting too much rainfall from this. Less than. 10 of an inch. Just under half of an inch, closer to a quarter in areas of the north bay and maybe the coast line. All in all its going to be very light rain, periods of on and off again showers. Unfortunately we are expecting that to become widespread at about 11 00. Typically from what i remember, thats the time people are getting out of mass. Thank you so much. We can still hunt for eggs with the raincoat on. In berkeley at least 20 people were arrested and 11 injured during violent clashes between supporters and opponents of President Trump. One person was reportedly stabbed. Hundreds of pro and antitrump supporters began to gather at Martin LutherKing Center Park about 10 00 yesterday morning for the tax day event. Thats when an explosive mele broke out. A peaceful tax day demonstration in San Francisco though. Tens of thousands of people demanding the president release hs tax returns. Some were asking what the president has to hide. Others calling him a coward for not making his finances available. One demonstrator was pretty passionate about what he calls Republican Party hypocrisy. You can bet if the shoe were on the other foot and the democrats were in power right now, they would just be going crazy if obama hadnt released his tax returns. That is what i find so incredibly annoying about republicans. Unlike what happened in berkeley, Police Reported no problems at this tax day event in San Francisco. Julia and i got together for a sunday sitdown in bronx where she was shooting an episode of veep which returns for its sixth season. Julia, its great to be back in our your own haunt . Yeah. Ive never seen it this empty. So many great nights together. Memories and blackout periods but we dont have to go down there. And who a week ago today, dr. David dao, boarded united flight 3411 at Chicagos Ohare International airport headed home, he thought to louisville. But its how he left the plane that sparked outrage around the world. Dr. Daos attorney said this week, dao suffered a concussion, a broken nose and lost two teeth when he was dragged out of the seat he had paid for so traveling united employees could take his place. Soon they were charging for luggage, leg room, seating changes, even carry on bags. With so many mergers fewer to choose between. An Airline Passenger advocate says we the customers share the blame. Whats happened to the travel experience over the last 20 years . I think we can all say that Customer Service has really suffered. And a lot of that comes from the consumers demand for lower prices.
