Speaking of new homes, many hurricane survivors fled to the bay area to start new lives in an nbc bay area morning news exclusive, Christie Smith caught up with one of them to see how theyre adjusting. She joins us live. Reporter good morning to you. His name is eric butler. He fled louisiana with 11 family members. They had never been to oakland before, never been to california, but found a rescue group here and this was really the only place they could go. He said he likes oakland, but adjusting to life here over the past five years since Hurricane Katrina certainly has not been easy for him. The rest of his family members have decided to return back home to the south. He says people here are quite warm and friendly and still are. He says his family members, though, Miss Louisiana and decided to return home. So now its just him and his two kids. A third daughter who graduated from high school here in oakland is on a plane back down south where she will attend college. Now, butlers family was among hundreds of thousands of people stranded on the roof tops after the leiv levees. He was stranded there for 13 days. Well tell you his story of how he survived up there for 13 days, but first he will describe how it was when the waters started to rise. But the water started rising really, really fast. And at one point we look over the balcony, and the water is maybe three feet from where were looking. So we decided if the levees broke, were not going to be safe where we are. Reporter he still struggles with one really important thing that happened during that storm, and that is that he lost his mothers brother, his uncle ricky, who died in Hurricane Katrina let that train go by when he decided to stay behind and ride out the storm. A court panel overturned the pastors conviction for illegally approaching patients outside an oakland clinic. The panel ruled the judges flawed instructions could have led him to be found guilty for behavior that is actually legal. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail in march of 2009. He served his jail term and challenged the law in court. San franciscos mayor is stepping in to try to keep the streets of San Francisco safer for nightclub goers. Mayor newsom wants a night life security report on his desk by september 1st it will look at how to further professionalize the industry to look at violence. Mayor newsom met with city nightclub owners, the Police Commander just to talk about the issue. This morning, an east bay youth soccer coach is behind bars, arrested on child pornography charges. Livermore police say the arrest comes after a threemonth investigation. 45yearold David Garrison is charged with distributing child pornography. Neighbors didnt want to go on camera but say the tight knit community is stunned. Huge summer block party. He was there with his family. The whole time, doing this. Shocking. Investigators say so far the pornography on his computer does not depict local kids. There is a 50,000 reward on a shooting we first told you about yesterday. Frien gathered near the spot where 13yearold jimon clark was shot. Oakland police say a man came up to clark and his friend as they were walking along bancroft near 67th street. Investigators dont know why the man shot at them. Clark died but his friend was not hurt. As a mother, living in this community, seeing the kids in the neighborhood every day, it really hurt my heart. Clarks murder is the sixth homicide this past week in oakland. Garbage Truck Drivers on the peninsula are returning to work early this morning after a stinky strike left heaps of garbage piling up in san mateo county. Union drivers walked off the job on wednesday to support landfill workers in Half Moon Bay who worked without a contract since december. Drivers say they hope to get all the trash cleared by tomorrow. In all, 36 now cu,000 customers been dealing with that stench. Crews say theyre done fixing a ruptured pipe that spilled sewage in redwood shores. 35,000 gallons of raw sewage spilled in the streets near davit lane yesterday. A Restoration Company will clean the area, but residents are told to stay away from the lagoon water because it remains unsafe. A camera lowered inside gives us our first look at what life is like underground for these 33 men trapped since the beginning of the month what is more incredible is that theyre actually in good spirits. The video shows them smiling, waving, thanking their families and rescuers. The miners also show how they organized living quarters. Their medical supplies in one spot, a place for prayer, a bed made of rocks. The men are trapped in an area about the size of a studio apartment. 530 square feet. On average each man has already lost 22 pounds. Rescuers expect to pull the men out by christmas. A new report from the city controller reveals how much officers are working and how little oversight there is on the overtime on time cards. A Southern California popsicle maker is recalling its frozen fruit bars because it could be linked to a rare outbreak of typhoid fever. The fruity pops company says the bars were distributed in california, arizona and texas since may of last year. They were made with contaminated fruit pulp that was recalled earlier this month after it was linked to a typhoid outbreak. Reporter as you can see behind me there are homes here still littered and left exactly like they were when the water receded. The only difference is the weeds and vines have taken what that water did not five years ago. People understand it was a devastating storm, they knew it as it made landfall on the mississippi coast and then as the flood walls and levees gave way, they knew this would be a long and difficult process, but few knew it would be this long and this difficult. Theres a lot of frustration in the area, a lot of people who hoped to be further along in the recovery, especially in the ninth ward. One of the hardest hit areas from katrina. Less than a quarter of those who lived here before the storm have come back since. And thats making it tough for those who want to bring the Community Back to get traction. It will be a tough go for a long time. But the ones you find down here, working to bring it back, say they are committed to the effort and they are not going away. They want to bring the Community Back though they understand it will take some time. Thank you very much, jay. Many people who fled the katrinaravaged area began a new life in the bay area. Christie smith has the story of one man who moved from the roof to the east bay. Five years after Hurricane Katrina and survivors here in oakland can tell what they went through like it was yesterday. Eric butler lives in oakland now. He was originally from new orleans. When the levees broke, he was stranded on a roof top with 17 family members for three long days. Butler now works as a youth counselor here in oakland. Thats why he stays. He loves his job. Other family members who evacuated here to oakland have returned home to louisiana. They were among those heartbreaking stories, images of people stranded, but no helicopters came to help his family, instead it was Television Cameras that hovered above. On day two, tired and hungry, they knew they had to make a move. I thought that i would probably die, that was the day we realized we had to pick three men to go and get some food. And we decided that we were going to swim until we saw whatever. Now he says that they ended up taking toy boats from a nearby toys r us, stringing them together and loading them with food from a local store. He said they got off the roof eventually when the water receded. They never did get anyone to come out and help them. Butler says going to louisiana is not easy for him to see the devastation, sometimes he does return but he plans to stay in oakland for good.
