Sources close to the investigation tell nbc bay area news that daunte duane jackson, the suspect in the killing of 8yearold sophia mason, has been arrested. That arrest happened in newark. Police have been looking for jackson since march when sophia was found dead in merced. The girls mother was arrested. Jackson, the boyfriend, will face the same charges. The city of san jose began the final phase of clearing out a homeless encampment near the airport this morning. Nbc incomess thom jensen spoke with People Living in the camp who said they thought they had more time. Reporter city workers arrived before sunrise with dumpsters and heavy equipment. Within a couple of hours, residents told us they were also going to work, removing cars and makeshift homes and crushing them on site. A former resident of the Guadalupe Gardens encampment says she was visiting her boyfriend this morning at his rv when the work started. Theyre physically removing us. And not towing the vehicles this time, theyre actually just crushing them. Reporter she says residents believed they had until the end of the month to clear out after getting conflicting deadlines from cleanup crew managers and after the initial cleanup began months ago. Theres been miscommunication along the way. Reporter a current resident who has lived at the site for four years says he was caught offguard too as he heard the heavy equipment fire up. Destroying homes, chewing them up and spitting them out. Reporter Adrian Sanchez was rushing to get a spare wheel on his van when we caught up with him. He says he was assured since his rig is working, it wont be removed and crushed. Its working. Theyre woried about abandoned vehicles. Reporter city Officials Say faa mandated them to clean up the site because its directly under the flight path. Since march, workers have removed more than 1. 3 Million Pounds of debris and at least 84 cars and trucks that didnt operate. Meanwhile, a worker for a local Nonprofit Group that provides interim housing and onsite showers, toilets, and Laundry Services at guadalupe garden said its a sad day.
