Nbc bay area Investigative Reporter jackson van der beckett has learned exclusive details about the gunman. Reporter we were the first ones to arrive as police swarmed this duplex. This is the home of 38yearold jimmy lam, the u. P. S. Driver that police say shot five people at his job site before killing himself in front of police today. Sources tell me that lam has a history of mental issues and may have been upset with his boss. Weve also learned hes had a previous criminal history involving dui charges. Neighbors tell us that theyve seen him around in his uniform, but that he largely kept to himself, usually smoking out a duplex window or talking on his cell phone. They say hearing he may have killed coworkers is stunning. Im just in shock. Because i just heard about it. I heard about it from one of the neighbors Reporter Police have spent much of the day searching his apartment for an explanation, after finding at least three gun magazines at the scene of the shooting. We saw them remove paper bags of evidence and a large computer tower. Jackson van der beckett joining us now. And jackson, you have new information on the weapons used in this attack. Reporter yeah, they really did, janelle. Mike lefiti had an unusual, rather touching relationship with many people here in the Diamond Heights neighborhood. This is a memorial people have been putting together this afternoon to remember big mike. While visiting a memorial to honor mike lefitis life, people at the Diamond Heights Shopping Center got emotional. Mike was an extraordinary person. He loved everybody. He always had a smile. Hes just so big, you just want to hug him. Reporter everyone called him big mike. They describe him as a family man, who made friends everywhere he delivered. Mike was bigger than life. He was like 300 pounds of human being, but he was like 800 pounds of joy and laughter. He was an amazing person. He just had the hugest heart. Reporter erica miller lives along mikes delivery route. They say everyone here is shocked. They feel like they lost a good friend. He has the biggest heart in the whole world. Even though he was a huge guy, he did look intimidating to people who didnt know him. But he was just a huge teddy bear. Reporter a friend who always made sure to take care of others. Several months ago, i passed his truck looking for a present for my grandson so i could take it and leave right away and give it to him. Reporter thats the kind of guy he was. Several people tell us mike was planning to take his kids to the warriors parade tomorrow. There is also talk of a go fund me to help his family. He brought with him grief counselors from the Health Department to meet with witnesses traumatized by what they saw. District attorney Mark Peterson walked into the contra costra county courthouse through the public interest, just like any other criminal defendant, as he appeared in court on felony charges. Not only is he prosecuting, hes a lawyer for 30 years. So he knew better. Reporter the state attorney general filed 12 counts of felony perjury and one count of felony grand theft against the countys top cop this morning. Claiming he illegally took 66,000 from his Campaign Fund and lied about it on Campaign Disclosure documents. And Mark Patterson apparently thinks he is above the law. He pled no contest to one count of felony perjury and resigned from office. In exchange, the state agreed to dismiss the other charges. Reporter Suzanne Hernandez walked into the courtroom here in palo alto this afternoon, wearing handcuffs and shackled. And according to this report by investigators, they say that she confessed to killing an elderly woman using a hammer. Deputies say they took 39yearold Susan Hernandez to Santa Clara Valley medical center, friday, for a psychiatric evaluation, after she was found running naked down a busy street in cupertino. Later, investigators linked her to the murder of 74yearold mary wilson, who was found dead in her cupertino home. The attack happened in the victims living room. Authorities say it appears hernandez beat the victim with a hammer during an apparent manic episode. It looks like the suspect entered through the back door of the residence. It appears that the victim was awake. They were unrelated to each other, so it doesnt look like they knew each other in any way. Reporter according to this report by a sheriffs deputy, hernandez admitted killing wilson using a hammer. The Prosecutor Says there are clearly Mental Health issues with this suspect and she expects its possible hernandez could plead guilty by reason of insanity. Hernandez lives in los gatos. A big cleanup project is underway in the San Francisco bay, just under the bay bridge. You may remember a barge capsized a few months ago, it happened just south of the bridge and settled just above the transbay two. Now the coast guard is cleaning up the mess. Today theyre removing fuel from the barge to keep it from leaking into the water, but the barge itself will not be completely removed for several more weeks. Jeff ranieri here now.
