This thing behind me actually spilled in over the banks, and you can see right here on the concrete, we got lots of mud hanging out on the ground, and thats because the water came up over the banks and a lot of this mud continues to hang out here on the river right on the banks but the thing about this. Tonight were expecting more rain, as you mentioned, jeff, and with more rain the potential for creeks rising for localized flooding, that exists. So with the mornings rain we had, yeah, a big deal. Now tonight, as you go to bed, things to keep in mind. Were tracking more heavy rain in the forecast and because of that, you want to make sure you take precautions before you head to bed. Were talking about the potential for more localized flooding and the potential for strong winds that could bring power lines down and trees down. Well track it as things progress. For now, looks like the river is holding up but as you heard earlier, it rose to six feet just in 18 hours, which is really remarkable. Jeff, back to you. Thats phenomenal and the danger of flash flooding. There wasnt one part of the state untouched by this storm system. Coming up rob with more perspective on the rainfall we did get, you guys. Somebody at 4 00 a. M. This morning came out to the pump station behind me and stole the copper wire connected to the pump. By the way, that would be the power source show causing a problem that affects more than just water pumps. This water pump appears to be working just fine. Too bad this isnt the same apparatus supposed to be doing the job this morning inside this pump station. This is one of the many inconveniences caused by copper wire thieves. Reporter bob hawes saws the guadeloupe was like a Swimming Pool and stalling drivers, the result of stolen copper. We inspect the pumps to make sure they are working. Reporter did that not happen . It passed but the thieves did it after inspection. Reporter the problem is not isolated to pumps. Though cale tr stations and tra lights and meters are pray. We had streetlight wire theft throughout the city in the last year and a half. Its an extreme inconvenience. We spent over a Million Dollars in the last couple years replacing wire thats been stoling. Reporter for cal trans its more costly, tens of millions of dollars to replace these broken areas, prompting the question, how to fix the problem. Increasing the security and fencing and dedurants. San jose tells me the city will be bringing enhanced protection, securing Access Points and trying to be more proactive. Reporter the california Highway Patrol says they were responding to about a dozen calls every 30 minutes during the peak of the storm this morning. And the chp isnt the only agency keeping busy. Gas and go, gas and gas and besides trying to drive in the rain, they realize i dont have tires. Reporter tire shops, collision repair businesses and Tow Truck Companies are seeing double and triple the business they would on a dry day. Very busy. Very busy. Thanks to the rain. In Oakland International airports and san jose did not report any cancellations today. A lot of people were without power. Pg and e was knocked out for thousands. We talked to the Utility Company in the past hour and it tells us the total number of outages is at 500 but at 10 00 this morning, more than 13,000 were without power. Today the chp said they spotted the suspects in the area shortly after the shooting and arrested them. This happened yesterday evening. They are accused of firing five to six shots on the freeway. One car was hit but nobody was hurt. San jose airport is expanding but not for you and me. Some of the richest men in Silicon Valley are funding a new terminal for their private jets. This is admittedly a wing being added to the airport for the convenience of very wealthy people. But with new jobs and new revenue coming to the airport and to the county, its also good for the local economy. With the ceremony Ground Breaking inside, work is beginning outside on an 82 Million Dollar terminal to house private jets owned by the founders of google. The aircraft will be handled by a Company CalledBlue City Holdings taking pains to point out google the company is not involved. We heard this called the google airport that were building. You know, its a private airport for the google. Reporter is it the google airport . No. Reporter googles founders are funding to buy it signing a 50year lease to bring jobs and revenue to san jose. They are going to pay the city 3 million a year for 50 years. Thats 150 million. Second, its 300 construction jobs. It will be built on what used to be san jose airports longterm parking lot transforming this into a haven for corporate jets. Being able to respond continuously to corporate and aviation needs, it really makes a difference to companies that they can get out there and respond to issues. There are two more cases of the measles in the bay area tonight. The men are relatives of the cal student who we told you about earlier this month. That student was exposed on a trip to the philippines. All three had never been vaccinated. The new cases bring the total number in the bay area to six. From the measles to the flu, the number of deadly flu cases in the state is at the highest in five years. California department of Health Reports there are 302 flurelated deaths this year statewide so far. Last year california had 34 cases. In 2009 the state had 539 cases. Thats when the h1n1 strain first surfaced in the United States and novak seen was available. Here in the bay area, there are 50 deadly cases reported so far. Another system moving through. Lets turn to chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Were continuing to track this area of low pressure moving closer to the california coastline and the core of the low pressure with the strongest wind and also some instability will be heading towards los angeles and we definitely think well be getting outer bands moving on later on tonight. More coming up, but i want to take a look at the over call accumulated precip from the storm system. This was statewide folks not only from Northern California but all the way down towards los angeles. There wasnt one stop not touched by rainfall and the most remarkable thing is down in the Santa Clara Valley after getting little to nothing, we saw the highest total that ranged from one to three inches. When its in a drought, more perspective what this means for the rainfall season. Jeff, a lot of the totals came down big time overnight as you try to head out the door, this is rewinding the radar. You can see the periods of heavy rain. The moisture came from south to north along with converdictive elements and thunderstorms and dropped rain and in the case of san jose from yesterday to today, nearly an inch of rain. That was a 28 boost to our seasonal rainfall total in just one day. Just shows you how bone dry things have been. So thats good news there. I want to point out the accumulating rainfall. We were looking at this number close to 31 and added 23 billion gallons that makes us 33 of average and as this moisture heads off towards the east, earlier this month and into january, we were 16 of average, now up to 33 but perspective there, were still lurking below the all time 76 to 77 snow pack low. The bottom line, we need more storms like this that hit hard and fill up the reservoirs and add to the snow park from the end of march into april. Thank you. Nice boost for san jose. The 20 something percent uptake is great news. Live Doppler Radar not showing any major rainfall but still tracking a few pockets of light to moderate rain. Thats all we need across 6 80 tonight. You can see temperatures stay on the cooler side, low to mid 60s. Well get sun in here but youll have to wait until after the Morning Hours when we have a linkers chance of showers and the sun will come out. Best chance for morning showers, the south bay. The least chance for any rainfall tomorrow would be the north bay. Thats when the storm will clear out first at this point. As we wind things up with the storm lingering offshore, my highest concern tonight will be the chance here of isolated thunderstorms, winds that still could gust as high as 45 Miles Per Hour and we have a flash Flooding Risk that will be the highest at the coast and the Santa Clara Valley. More and more traffic reporter this morning with the looming deficit of 142 million, Golden Gate Bridge directors weighed the first toll hike since 2008. On the table, a plan to raise tolls a buck. Fast track would rise to 6, nonfast track to 7 and would raise to a peak of 7 for fast track, 8 for nonfast track in 2018. We reached the point the driver as the cash cow has reached the level of it has no more left. Reporter this morning a steady stream of drivers spoke out against the increase, some breaking into song. I got ripped off on my way to San Francisco reporter Officials Say the increase is needed to pay for projects and maintenance as well as subsidize the districts bus and ferry service. The tolls are the workhorse of the organization. They do keep 25 of traffic off the Golden Gate Bridge during the morning commute. Go back east and the washington bridge, 13 each way. People seem to be able to handle that. Reporter some like susan think the toll hike will keep plenty of drivers off the bridge. The impact is so people will go into the city less. They wont go in marin county. Its a hard ship. Reporter the new pricing takes effect the 7th. We also learned today that plans for a new suicide barrier on the bridge will be completed in two months, but there is no plan for how to pay for it. The district has a policy that it cant use toll money to pay for those barriers, but some bridge directors want to change the policy. They will meet next month to consider that. Even after 11 00, dont let your guard down because in the overnight hours, the way things work with this very Strong Center of low pressure as that continues to get closer and head towards Southern California, what well see happen are these spokes of moisture spiral out that could bring us a few more isolated showers and thunderstorms as we head into the overnight hours also into sections of tomorrow. Right now the creek is moving very swiftly, which is why there is now a section of this bike path that is closed because of flooding. The question now is, what impact has the rain had on our water supply . Lexington reservoir may look a lot more full but after the storms this week, its up just. 7 compared to monday. And the Santa Clara Valleys nine other reservoirs are up 1 . We still need about eight inches to see a meaningful impact. But we really rely on ground supplies to keep us going in the summer months. This will benefit us very much. Reporter while the last series of storms were positioned north and south of santa collar ray valley, shortchanging the south bay, water experts say this storm is different. We also benefitted from the timing of this weeks storm. What is great is that these storms have been spaced out, so it allows the ground time to absorb the moisture and reduce the threat to flooding. Reporter state and water experts say the good news is it looks like we wont be continuing with the atmosphere High Pressure ridging that was blocking out rain. Were seeing an unsettled pattern and relatively wet, maybe not really strong storms like this one, but were seeing at least small storms, maybe a series continuing for awhile. Reporter which means you can expect this reservoir to go up at least a little more in the near future. Water district leaders say despite the rain, we still need to conserve, and they are still asking that south bay water users reduce the water use by 20 or more. Reporting live in lose gados. Thanks. Reporter meanwhile, down stream the run off in the l. A. River was too much for two people and their dogs. Los angeles city fire came in with a swift water rescue team. That dog is very wellbehaved. Reporter storm preps, predictions of the largest event in three years have been on all week. Started the exact day after the fire ended in our town. The planning for this particular day started immediately and continued throughout today. Reporter and the more water that comes, the more convinced homeowners are they need to get out and compile with the mond mandatory evacuations. Get you belongings together and get out. We put some stuff near the glass so if it breaks it doesnt go everywhere. It looks like almost smoke. Reporter a reminder of how close fire danger is even in a rainstorm. A boulder exposed roofs still smoldering. The danger of mudslides wont be over once the rain is passed, either. Well be concerned for the next five years. And thats because just like the fire can flair back up a month later, these rains can soak into the hillsides and weeks later after everything is dry with no warning, we seen them in other communities give way under clear blue skies. Lets bring in jeff ranieri and a Tornado Warning not far from us. There is a potential for fund clouds and there has been one spotted. Sacramento and if you conon that lives near wood land, were tracking a very strong thunderstorm thats headed towards knights lightening and a funnel cloud reported that could produce a tornado on the ground. They will be under this Tornado Warning until 7 00 in sack morao and if you have family that lives that way, give them a call if they are on the road ways. Well continue to track that. Otherwise, back here at home. Were finding a few areas of scattered showers and the pocket of heavy rainfall in the southern Santa Clara Valley. No tornado spin but producing a half inch of rainfall per hour. This is heading towards East San Jose throughout the next 20 and 30 minutes. Well continue the risk of Severe Weather as we head throughout tonight. Well mark the chance of funnel clouds. Its in existence. Even though we have a break in the clouds now, there is uplift in the rotation that we cant rule out more isolated thunderstorms back in here to the bay area for tonight. All right. We may still have a few more minor Power Outages before the system finally clears on outment lets go ahead and get you to the timing on the system. What you will see as we continue throughout this evening, 9 00 and 10 00 scattered showers likely but well see another zone of rainfall move across by midnight and also through about 6 00 and 7 00 in the morning. The storm system will move to the south and spiral in stability for us. Eventually, by the midday hours on saturday, the afternoon, that storm system moves to the south and areas of clearing across the bay area. What you can expect throughout tonight. My biggest concern will again be the chance of isolated thunderstorms that may produce a few more funnel clouds. The Tornado Warning near sacramento. Winds 20 to 40. That could bring out more Power Outages and downed trees and a flash flood concern for the coast. The Santa Clara Valley and the santa cruz mountains. Again, all of this varies on the fact if we get more thunderstorms or not. If we get them, this is what im concerned about at this point. As we head throughout saturday, well have sunshine, some partly sunny skies eventually by the afternoon hours. San jose at 63 degrees, pa palo alto 65. The jacket and umbrella for the first part of the day. No rain icon. Youll clear out from the storm system first.
