Last night, about 90 people spent christmas night at the shelter, and even more expected to pour in here tonight. The home first shelter opened december 5th. Its run a little differently than other shelters in the area. Clients have to be referred by another agency to come here, but then theyre guaranteed to stay here until the end of march. After that, they will need a referral in order to stay any longer. Santa clara county supervisors recently declared the entire month of december an inclement weather episode, which means the shelters in the county are allowed to take in more people than usual. Ricky mena has packed a lot into just 31 years of life athlete, musician, arborist, but now hes got a new identity given to him from an unlikely source. For ricky mena, it was all about the cause. As a younger man, i was more selfish rather than selfless. I bought it for the image. I just wanted to go out to be seen and things like that. Ricky found himself last year living in a friends spare room in a personal Training Session in exchange for room and board. And it was like, okay, who am i now . Reporter the answer, surprisingly, came from rickys grandmother. Surprising, seeing as she died two years ago and she came to him in a dream. She came to me in a dream, flipped on a reeltoreel, like, old movie projector, which is totally her style. Reporter the images were of spiderman. Giving gifts to needy kids. I think hes going to succeed, because you know, spiderman never fails. Lets check in with rob mayeda right now, who never fails with that forecast for you. Weve got a cold one coming this way. It is cold. Its nice to be indoors, even though its just after 5 00 right now. Weve got 49 degrees in san jose. Thats not too bad, but look at livermore, down to 42 already with a chilly breeze coming in out of the east and also still in the 24r0z in San Francisco, looking at downtown. Wind direction kind of interesting here, offshore. That is a dry wind pattern for us, even though we live right next to the water. When you get the offshore winds, humidity levels can really drop off, and dew point temperatures really drive for bay area standards. Right now, as you saw, its 42 at livermore. Factor in the wind speed, plus the air temperature, it feels like youre opening up your fridge right now, 37 degrees there in livermore. Needless to say, kind of dry. Were seeing that outside today, skies cleared out. No clouds around the bay area, and the dew point temperatures these are the numbers the airs going to try to cool down toward under clear skies and light winds tonight. When we see these in the 20s, its pretty dry by bay area standards and usually coincides with a freeze warning like we have tonight, very likely, at least three to five degrees cooler than the temperatures we woke up to this morning, which means mid20s to low 30s in the coldest valleys for tomorrow morning. By 9 00, once the freeze warning expires, notice morgan hill and livermore still in the 30s there at 9 00. Now, during the afternoon, well begin to see more clouds spilling in and eventually a chance of some rain to finish off the weekend. So, the morning, youve got the freezing temperatures, relati relatively clear skies and clouds on the increase after noon and then the chance of rain from midafternoon into the evening tomorrow. A cold system, so it doesnt have a lot of moisture to work with, but most locations picking up probably about a quarter inch or less. Chances are, seeing little bit higher totals there as you head towards santa rosa and ukiah, but snow levels could be as low as 2,000 to 3,000 feet as that system comes in tomorrow night. So, during the day, starting off with very cold temperatures in the morning, increasing clouds midday and then a chance of rain as we approach the evening, highs in the low 50s. North bay temperatures upper 40s to low 50s for highs tomorrow and well see highs in the low 50s around the trivalley. So, once we get rid of this system sunday into monday, the trend for the week ahead as we approach new years eve is actually looking dry. Were going to see High Pressure strengthening, acting a bit like a wall here on the west coast. So, if you do have plans for new years eve right now, they do look dry, and our temperatures should begin to rebound a little bit. One more night of freezing temperatures tonight, and as the clouds come in, that should bring temperatures up a little bit. There you see new years eve and new years day looking dry for san jose, oakland and livermore, too. Temperatures beginning to rebound as we finish off the year and head into the new year on a dry note after some freezing temperatures tonight, maybe some low snow at times sunday night into monday and a few showers to start the week, but turning drier as we go through wednesday, thursday and friday. Terry . All right, rob, thanks a lot. Still to come at 5 00, even a grinch couldnt ruin christmas for one east bay family. And to top it off, today steph curry was named ap male athlete for 2015. The east bay family victimized by burglars have the Fremont Police to thank for making their christmas brighter. Officers responded to a burglary call Christmas Eve in the arden wood neighborhood. When they got there, they learned that all of the familys Christmas Gifts had been stolen. The officers quickly put together a plan to replace those gifts. One officer went shopping, then brought the gifts back for the other officers to wrap, and theyre very good wrappers, as we saw there. They loaded them into their patrol sleigh and surprised the family at their house. The grateful kids told police it turned out to be the best Christmas Ever. Fremont pd, way to go. Its going to be a cold one tonight. Rob has one last look at the forecast coming up after the break. New details just into our news new details now just into our newsroom on that officerinvolved shooting in palo alto. It happened about 9 30 last night on webster street near middle field road and university. Police say the suspect appears to have called 911 to report a false emergency. It appears that his plan was to get police to come to the home, and when officers got there, the suspect immediately charged at them armed with a knife. Some would call this suicide by cop. Police say two officers fired their weapons, the suspect was hit and died at the hospital. The two officers were not injured. Theyre both on paid administrative leave. Palo alto police say that investigation continues, including what may have motivated the suspects to do that. The last time Palo Alto Police were involved in a Deadly Police shooting was 13 years ago, back in 2002. Big story tonight is whats going to be happening outside your house and how colds it going to get . Very cold. Two sides of the weather coin were watching tomorrow, beginning tonight. Its the freeze warning through tomorrow morning, valley temperatures in the 20s and 30s. Then at the end of the day, tracking a little more rain and low snow levels. So, the mornings starting off with the windsheltered valleys in the 20s and 30s, and then during the afternoon, well transition to increasing clouds. Then by midafternoon, showers returning to the bay area. So, highs tomorrow cool, upper 40s to low 50s. Rain possible as early as the afternoon around San Francisco and the north bay, and we could see snow levels, again, close to 3,000 feet or even lower in the northern end of the Sacramento Valley for tomorrow night. So, something well be watching in addition to the freezing temperatures to start tomorrow morning. Rob, thanks very much. Nbc nightly news is back. See you at 6 00. Take care.
