Nbc bay areas pete joins us live from the airport with the stories passengers are now telling of their big scare in the air. Good evening. Good evening. Thankfully, no one was injured during this Emergency Landing. In fact, some folks hopped on the next flight out of town, but there were some that werent quite ready. Im not getting on a plane right now. Ashley was one of the passengers on this southwest flight heading to chicago from oakland that was forced to make an Emergency Landing this morning. According to the faa, the plane had a landing gear issue. He said were going to turn right back around. Then he came back on and said, change of plans. Were not turning back around. But were not going to chicago. Ashley says the pilot kept everyone calm, not saying specifically what the issue was, only that the plane needed to burn fuel. Then like an hour and a half went by. He said we need to burn more. 6,000 pounds more. Were going to be here for a little while. A little while turned into more than four hours. For some, panic started to set in. The woman beside me was crying. People holding hands. People everyone was obtheir phones. So im sure sending messages to loved ones. Ashley sent Text Messages to her boyfriend, hans, who said he felt helpless and was happy to see she made it back safely. Its anticlimactic, gratefully. All clapping and crying. Ashley was heading home for the holidays, but after todays excitement, her family will have to wait. I think my mom is calling me. That southwest aircraft has been taking in for repairs, and coming up at 6 00, well hear from a passenger sitting next to ashley who will give us her account of what went down. Thank you. A normally safe east bay neighborhood on edge tonight after a pair of smash in home christmas criminals. A normally safe east bay neighborhood on edge after a pair of smashin home burglaries and a spike in mail theft. The hot spots include hastings drive and dorsett way in benicia. Jodi hernandez got a look at the crime and the growing concern. People here in benicia are on alert tonight. Thieves have been targeting this usually quiet neighborhood, even trying to steal presents from under somebodys christmas tree. Very safe here, very family oriented. Its just very disturbing to know that this is happening. Thats how folks who live in this benicia neighborhood are feeling after some brazen burglars hit two homes. Smashing their way through back sliding glass doors and making off with jewelry, electronics and in one case, three guns. In these cases, they had stacked all the presents up at the door ready to take them with them when they left. I think they might have been disturbed or interrupted during the course of it, but they had the packages all ready to go. The criminals are also targeting mail boxes. A lot of Biotech Companies are nearby, but so are the king tides. And some people are worried the flooding they cause might pollute the bay. The king tides are bringing more than just water to south San Franciscos oyster point. Theyre bringing debate. The city has talked about plans to some day develop on top of what once was a landfill, but i think this amount of water collecting on the surface is not a good thing. Some say the flooding here is fairly typical during king tides, needs to be addressed first. The water concentrates down here. That is contamination from the landfill below into the bay, something the city of south San Francisco says is not a problem. Were not seeing any evidence of that in the testing. There are perimeter monitors as well, the Water Quality from the landfill, and were not seeing anything that would indicate anything getting outside of the landfill. The Regional Water board was among those visiting the site today, along with an engineer who weighed in. The longterm solution would be probably some type of building of some time of levees around here. So that we dont have this inundation problem. Trying to limit flooding with lots more rain predicted in the future. The water board says its a violation to have standing water on top of a landfill. They want the city to come up with a short and longterm plan. Reporting live in south San Francisco, scott budman, nbc bay area news. Scott, thank you.
