Store flooded down at that end of the Shopping Center. We didnt know at the time, other than the heavy rains, what had caused the flooding. We know a bit more tonight. That was heartbreaking. That was tough to watch. You could see the damage just being done. Right in front of your eyes. Reporter when she got to the shop yesterday morning she said there was 2 inches of water inside. The parking lot was a Swimming Pool. Reporter she figures the loss is at least 30,000. Around the corner on cecilia way pablo castro figures that will be about the damage to his place. My wood floors are all damaged. They have to come out. They are not salvageable. Reporter castro owns a Wood Flooring business, put in maple, bamboo, and cherry floors that are now all ruined. Next door, the hardwood is already coming out. Neighbors say escrow just closed on this house yesterday, the day it flooded. The culprit is this pump house operated by the county of marin. Yesterday morning around 3 00 a. M. , a high water alarm went off. Two of the three pumps had shut down. Likely due to overheating or a power surge. The county is investigating. Late this afternoon, i spoke with the head of the countys Flood Control division. She said the workers got out here and found the two pumps not working. They turned them on right away but it took two hours for the water to recede. The implication that she was making is that even with those pumps working properly, it might not have been enough to handle what turned out to be a very expensive rainstorm. In San Francisco, workers are still trying to fill a large sinkhole. Its about the size of a small Swimming Pool about 30 feet wide. Its located the intersection of sixth and lake in the Richmond District which remains closed to traffic. Investigators say an old pipe burst from the pressure of days of heavy rain. After all that rain, the sun finally breaking through today. A chance for most of us to simply just dry out. But wouldnt you know, here comes a few more storms. In new york and chicago today, hundreds of demonstrators have turned out supporting eric garner, the unarmed black man who died after being put in a choke hold by a police officer. Yesterday a grand jury decided not to indict that officer. It comes ten days after a grand jury in missouri also decided not to indict another officer for shooting and killing michael brown. We are seeing a small group of demonstrators here in downtown oakland. But it is still early. We had a chance to speak with demonstrators earlier and they said this is about more than one person, more than one location. Its about police accountability. But we also checked in with Oakland Police. And theyre saying the rallies, the protests, the long hours are starting to add up. Black lives matter whats happening here is a peaceful shutdown and full occupation of the golden bear cafe. Reporter students and protesters at uc berkeley spoke today before a large crowd. We are doing this in solidarity with the people of ferguson, with the people of new york. Reporter in the name of michael brown, now eric garner, calling for police accountability. With more demonstrations expected in nearby oakland, police are preparing again. We certainly are here to facilitate free speech, protests, First Amendment rights. We want to create a safe environment for that. Also at the same time, it stretches our resources. Reporter last nights demonstrations, largely peaceful. But last week some protests ended with vandalism and arrests. With just over 700 officers, am essay some are working their 12th day. It drives the overtime up as well as it really stresses and max myselves the officer. Now, we just came from days off canceled. Were going to days off canceled because we are anticipating more protests. Reporter other agencies like the chp have been coming in to assist. Those officers do come from other areas as well. A fire chief on the peninsula is accused in a fake credit card scheme. He pled not guilty today. This is mark lattice, chief of the Central County Fire Department in san mateo county, arrested yesterday. Prosecutors say his wife used fake credit cards to buy things for a fake business. She fled the country. According to investigators, lattice made 35,000 off his wifes schemes. Do you have an emergency . Dont call 911. We first told you about the Postal Service policy that may have led to a deadly delay at a facility in oakland. Investigative reporter vicky nguyen has new details. Weve learned employees have voiced concerns about this policy for years. These grievances are from 2005, filed with the national usps by postal workers here in the bay area. They document multiple instances where employees needed emergency medical care. In one case, someone suffered a seizure at work and 911 wasnt called for 45 minutes. Despite knowing about these complaints, the Postal Service did nothing to change its emergency medical procedures. Whats more, employees say not only did the rules prevent them from calling 911, theyve also been told theyd have to foot the bill if they call an ambulance. Police say officers were forced to open fire after they approached a suspicious car. One suspect took off on foot. The driver ran an officer over. I just saw an officer on the floor. The other officer ran to him. Then the officer on the floor was screaming. I imagine standing in front of a car that escalates from a stapp position and runs over the top of you. What kind of damage a 2,000pound vehicle can do to the human body. Reporter off the certificate is undergoing surgery this afternoon. While a 19yearold suspect has been booked on charges of attempted murder on two officers. Police found the bulletriddled car abandoned in east oakland. And late this afternoon, arrested the female driver. And he was doing nothing other than responding to a routine call for service this morning when this suspect violently ran him over in a car. Jodi hernandez reporting. Officials say the officer who was run over suffered major injuries, but he is expected to recover. A bizarre accident in cupertino involving a 4yearold. A child was hit and dragged by a car. It happened on clifford and south blaney avenue. This is near eaton elementary school. Investigators say the child was hit while riding a bike in the crosswalk. The childs helmet caught onto the bumper of that car and then was dragged. Good news, a few bumps and bruises but the child is expected to make a full recovery. The driver is cooperating with the investigation. Plenty of people felt the earthquake. 3. 2 quake shook the south bay just before 11 30 this morning. The usgs says the epicenter was eight miles west of morgan hill. Reports of shaking came in from as far north as santa clara. So far, no reports of any damage or injuries. Folks who say they just want to say thank you for your service and sacrifice. Looked at one way, the craft of carving wood is all about taking things away. Removing pieces of wood bit by bit until a finished shape is revealed. But look at it through the eyes of the trivalley wood carvers. Meeting every tuesday at the pleasanton senior center. Youll see just the opposite. For the past four years with every bit of wood they have removed from the 55 eagles heads they have carved, something has been added. A piece of themselves. It becomes a piece of love. I had no idea i even had it in my hands to do that. But it comes from someplace else. Reporter bob, like many fellow carvers, is a veteran. And like other members of the group, bob jumped at the chance when asked if hed like to help make personalized ceremonial canes for wounded vets. Personalized, not just because symbols representing the vets military history are etched into the staff but personal because before the first cut is ever made, the carver contacts the recipient to discuss the cane and their story. Its always heartwrenching to talk to these guys and find out a little bit about what theyve been through. It just overwhelming at times. As a nation weve asked these people to do a lot. It makes them feel good that somebody out there is really acknowledging them. I was really pleased that i was able to do that for one of our heroes. And i think that this match at lot better. Reporter in the hours upon hours of carving that go into just one eagle head, these men and women cant help but think about why they are doing what they do. The carvers, not too proud to admit that more than a few tears have hit the ground along with their wood shaving. Its hard for me to talk about it. Because i feel for those kids. And thats what they are, kids. Most of these canes as i said have gone to wounded veterans from iraq and afghanistan. As the wars in those countries are winding down they still want to make canes. Theyve reached out to vets homes across the bay area, now theyre working with korean war and world war ii veterans. They made a cane for somebody who was 100 years old recently. Weve had a little bit of a break here as we mentioned earlier. Mainly dry here on Doppler Radar from north bay to south bay. The next storm system quickly on the heels of our last storm that dropped anywhere from 2 to 4 inches of rainfall. Its about 700 miles offshore. Again, through the next 24 hours, well see that rain pick up. Details coming up. Right now to the sky camera network, most temperatures in the low to mid 60s. A beautiful night here across the south bay and san jose on our Weather Underground camera. A bit of clear sky and also a few clouds mixed in. Not too bad. Dry roads expected tonight. May have a few showers way off to the north. As we take you into tomorrow morning, what youre going to find is 4 00 were starting to see some activity out ahead of the storm system. That may pop up a few showers. I really think were going to be mainly dry up until about 8 00 a. M. After that the storm front will begin to move in. Well start to see things pick up in intensity around 1 00 here for the immediate coastline. Possibly down here for san jose. You can see some of these yellow popping up, thats the possibility of a few isolated thunderstorms wit with our system tomorrow. Looks like it will continue to pass through about 6 00 p. M. As we head throughout friday. Likely some areas of rain continuing through 11 00. And then as we head throughout saturday morning its going to really try to push out of here. I really think after the Morning Hours well begin to get dry weather in here for your saturday forecast. Heres the deal with this storm system when it comes to overall totals. I think its not going to be nearly as heavy as the past five days weve had across the bay area, good news. Rainfall totals,. 25 to. 75 inches. Even with rainfall totals at that level, ground is so saturated we likely still may have isolated flooding, maybe trees down, and minor power outages. You want to watch out even though these totals dont compare to the past five days. As you head throughout friday, a mix of sun, clouds, ims lated showers. Jacket weather. San jose expecting 65. Your eyes are probably drawn right on down to the bottom of the board here. Thats in San Francisco, where we have the chance here of isolated thunderstorms. Best risk will be at the immediate coastline. Youll see the north bay as well, including napa, santa rosa, sausalito. Oak oakland a slight chance. Walnut creek, the storm system will lose energy. Not as great a chance of getting thunderstorms in the trivalley. The next five days, it is going to be active. Youre going to be able to see for saturday and sunday, well get a drier break for san jose. So thats the good news. But by monday, another storm system is going to return. Youll also notice if youre looking toward San Francisco, saturday and sunday we havent kept the forecast totally dry. Theres still going to be upp upperlevel energy at the immediate coastline, we may have a few showers this weekend. So overall, a little bit of drying this weekend, then more wet weather throughout monday.
