Because of this mudslide you see here beside me, both north and southbound traffic on highway 17 is now reduced to one lane near sugarloaf road. That adds at least 10 to 20 minutes from your trip to los gatos to santa cruz. While traffic is moving slowly at times, Business Owners are glad to see at least cars can get through now, especially the owner of the summit house beer garden and grill. Yesterday was a little slower because they still have the northbound lane closed, but today since theyve opened both lanes, weve seen a lot more people traveling the road. Reporter she says business is still half of what it normally is on a sunday. The big question now is how these lane closures will impact commuter traffic tomorrow. Many people spent two hours taking an alternate rout e to gt to santa clara county. And they wonder if it will take that long if they use highway 17 tomorrow. Now, we did see an electronic billboard that said the speed limit was 40 miles an hour maximum, but i have to tell you that it was very rare for anybody to reach that speed in those congested areas where it dropped down to one lane. They are not saying if the victims had any injuries or if there was foul play, but one man who identified himself as a family friend told nbc bay area news that he suspects Carbon Monoxide. Reporter we are classifying the whole thing as suspicious, and thats basically a higher level of investigatory status, so were going to look at everything to determine what happened. Reporter now, earlier this month berkeley investigators concluded that another couple and their two cats died from Carbon Monoxide poisoning in a different apartment complex. Frightening moments in oakland this afternoon as a house goes up in flames with people trapped inside. This happened on 35th avenue and allendale avenue just a few blocks from the allendale elementary school. It was taken by a neighbor. You can see the intense flames there. Reporter all of them for committing crimes called aggravate felonies, selling drugs or failing to report and entering the country illegally. In july of last year, they were able to identify some 250 u. S. Veterans deported to at least 34 different countries. Our investigation found at least 60 veterans living here in the tijuana, mexico area. I dont think its right but thats the law. Reporter a deported u. S. Veteran himself helped the asu prepare that report. He says the number of veterans keep coming. We have veterans either in the process of being deported or deported. He served three years in prison after a problem. They can get help with job prospects, immigration advice and legal services. My allegiance is not to mexico. I was born in mexico, but my allegiance and who i choose to die and fight for is the United States of america. Our investigation found 70,000 noncitizens enlisted in the use ice military between 2009 and 2016. At least half of them never applied for citizenship, according to the center for naval analyses, leaving them vulnerable to deportation. Im willing to put my life on the line for the country i love. They have ordered immediate evacuation from people who live and work in oroville and places do downstream. They said the spillway is expected to fail in the next hour. That could lead to a huge rush of floodwaters into the area. Authorities are using the auxiliary spillway to let water out of the dam. Theyve had several erosion issues. This is the video from the spillway yesterday. The main spillway was damaged earlier in the week, thus the use of the auxiliary spillway, which is now failing. Its been closed since last friday after several new mudslides. This is highway 50 on echo summit. A stunning day. What a Beautiful Day to be up there driving, but that tre treacherous, of course, and you can see areas are clear, but the highway 50 closure stretches, but that beautiful sky behind you, beautiful weather there but still some traffic problems. Rob, youve been checking into the oroville dam. That structure untested until this weekend when we saw those water flows actually peak at 1 00 a. M. This morning. So that flash flood issued out in South Central butte county, this leads into sections of lower oroville, sections of sacramento saying we could see some river rising. This could happen monday afternoon. Those rates will begin to drop off during the day on monday. Thank goodness were seeing a break in terms of additional rainfall right now. This is something well have to watch. Its that new unused portion. At least until this weekend the spillway around that structure now leading to some uncontrollable runoff into the dam area and the feather basin. Well continue to keep you posted on nbc bay area. Well be closely watching our own creeks and streams, but that situation in oroville dam, were looking at probably five to eight inches of rain falling in extreme northern california. Thats going to make things a lot tougher across parts of the state. And this is an alert from the National Weather service, right, saying they will expect a dam failure in the next not the dam structure itself, but in the spillway. They spotted a lot of erosion that could bring unconformed releases out of that structure. They said yesterday it was safe, there was no chance of flooding, and then it changed.
