We learned earlier today that five of them are in very grave condition and were learning much more about the gunman and moments right after the shooting. We are learning more about the People Killed inside the club. Officials telling us this morning that there are 49 victims. The 50th person is the shooter. We will not be defined by the act of a cowardly hater. We will be defined by how we respond, treat each other and this community has already stepped up to do that. Reporter orlandos mayor buddy dyer updating us on the evidence and learning more about the shooter, 29yearold omar mateen. Their First Priority is identifying the victims and notifying family. We dont really count the shooter as a victim. Reporter investigators worked through the night to confirm i. D. S of 48 of the 49 victims. A grueling task for investigate are tos and a wait for loved one. Mateen pledged his allegiance to isis after storming in to pulse with rifle. He held hostages in the bathroom. Officers running in with bomb vests held mateen and used explosives to blow a hole through the wall. The explosive did not penetrate the wall completely. We used our Armored Vehicle, bear cat Armored Vehicle to punch a hole in that wall and there is a hole in the wall about two feet off the ground and about two or three feet wide. We were able to rescue dozens and dozens of people. Mateen came through that hole as well dying with the mpolice n a shootout afterwards. Reporter and the fbi tells us they did find a third gun inside the shooters car and he remained calm and cool while he was calling 911 inside the club to pledge his allegiance to isis. Its not clear what was found inside and what significance it has. Investigators are working to retrace the subjects steps and completely understand the motivation of the shooter. Pulse first opened in 2004 in honor of a coowners brother who died of aids. Last night was latin night. The club hosts monthly educational events for the lgbt community. The president spoke and said theres so far no evidence that he was directed by isis but was apparently inspired by radical information over the internet. He calls this another example of homegrown extremism. This is a devastating attack on all americans. It is one that is particularly painful for the people of orlando but i think we all recognize that this could have happened anywhere. The president added that investigators are still looking into the motivations of the shooter and considering all of the possibilities. He also said organizations like isis and al qaeda target gays and lesbians because of the Terror Organization has a, quote, vicious bankrupt ideology. The gunmans father posted an apology video on facebook but said he could not explain his sons shocking violence against people he did not know. In an interview with nbc kerry sanders, he said he would have arrested his son himself if he could have. I am as shocked as you are. I dont approve of this. In the United States anyone has the freedom and the choice to end his life and nobody has the right to do anything or impose anything so i dont approve of him, what he did. He condemned his sons actions. However, in the video he posted, seddiqui mateen talked about the accident at the nightclub saying the punishment is upon god and he will decide upon that, not humans. Omar mateens father says he was a welleducated man with a good job and respectful to his parents and that this act of murder goes against the teachings of his own faith. In the last hour, state Assembly Members from the bay area joined with leaders from the lgbt in americanislamic communities in solidarity. They are going to continue the fight by passing more gun restrictions. The next vote happens tomorrow. Stephanie chuang is there. Reporter they are confident. Weve seen this quite a bit in the city, flags flying at halfstaff in tribute to the victims of orlando. This has helped to fuel a message by local leaders and now the focus is on the ar15, the Assault Rifle used in the massacre over the weekend and also used in San Bernardino and in newtown. That killed 20 people, including six children. The proposed laws by local legislators are trying to stall the rapid availability of the assaultstyle rifles that allow for faster reloading. Another law would ban detachable magazines and those with bullet buttons and requiring those who own them to register them as assault weapons. The nra response has been that this punishes lawabiding gun owners but lawmakers say they are confident they can get this onto the governors desk by the end of the month. The big question is whether the governor will veto it the way he did before. I think this is a narrow version of the bill that he vetoed a couple years ago. So we feel like weve been listening to the governor. He obviously wants to be very careful and protective of peoples rights, as we all do. Governor brown has a central role to play in making sure that california can lead. Reporter if he doesnt sign it, hes letting californians down . And potentially the nation because other states will look to see what california does on gun control. Reporter now, this vote on the bill is up in sacramento tomorrow and theres an effort by Lieutenant Governor gavin newsom so get this in front of voters in november. The process includes more discussion and debate where voters can check yes or no but this does mean that the if the governor does in fact veto these bills, maybe the end of the month, maybe a little bit later, the voters here in california may be able to decide what they want to see happen when it comes to gun safety and control. That kind of weapon is also linked to at least four Mass Shootings in the United States. Back in july of 2012, james holmes used an ar15 to gun down moviegoers inside a Movie Theater in aurora, california. 12 people were killed. In december 2012, adam lanza killed 20 people and six children in newtown, connecticut. Christopher mercer fatally shot people in umpqua, oregon. The ar15 is one of the weapons that was used to kill 14 people and wound 22 more in the San Bernardino attack by farook. People in moscow, russia, left flowers in front of the u. S. The tragedy in orlando has affected everybody and it was important to gather everybody here at noon to have a sense of community and hug each other and try to get over this very tragic time. County board of supervisor pointed out that the county has supported the lgbqt community and also with the establishment of the office of lgbqt affairs. Officers increased foot patrol in the Castro District yesterday. Pride organizers say they have no plans to cancel the pride festival, an event that brings out more than a million people. In light of yesterdays attack, they will take every precaution. In preparation, as we always do, for each one of these, this is definitely going to act as a conversation. The festival is planned for june 25th and 26th. Police now say the man arrested in santa monica on his way to an l. A. Pride parade did not mean to do any harm there. That man, james howell of indiana is still in custody. He was going to meet a boyfriend at the event. Hes still facing charges, though, of weapons and explosives that the police found. In other news, another Oakland Police officer has been placed on leave. This is the fifth officer on leave. Oakland pd made that announcement on sunday as it looks into the alleged Sexual Misconduct case. The teenager is now an adult and the names of the officers involved have not been released. The two have already resigned. Continuing coverage now, anger on display during this years graduation at Stanford University following the recent sentencing of a onetime swimmer there of sexual assault. Some students were angry over the sentencing of brock turner and used the opportunity to voice protests with the words 1 3 on their graduation cap. A recent study found that one in three students is sexually assaulted while earning their degree but that counted stanfords own study which puts the number to 1 in 50. Reporter omar mateen was an american citizen, a muslim, born in new york to parents from afghanistan. And in a picture with his current wife noor and their young son, they look happy. In the beginning, he was a normal being. But his exwife says she realizes how troubling he was eight years ago. He was bipolar and would get mad out of nowhere thats when i started to worry about my safety and after a few months he started abusing me physically. She turned to her family for help. My family literally rescued me. The night that they were there, they had to pull me out of his arms. Reporter she says she hasnt spoken to him in seven years. The fbi had their own concerns, investigating mateen three times in the last four years. Nothing turned up in either case. And the fbi now says there was no indication he was planning an attack. He was scary. Reporter he was scary . Yeah. He was scary in a concerning way. And it wasnt at times. It was all the time. Reporter daniel gilroy, a former police officer, worked with mateen as a Security Guard in port st. Lucie and said he was disturbed by his unpredictable outbursts. He would kick things and slam things down and have a violent rage. Reporter his rants were often racist. He said so many times, im going to kill all of these he said that all the time. Reporter referring to black people. Reporter he reported him to supervisors and mateen responded by calling and texting gilroy incessantly. 18 was in one day that went unreplied. Reporter he and his family were scared of mateen and he quit ultimately. Do you wish you had raised the issue with other people besides well, now i do. I feel responsibility. It was no shock. I feel responsible. I felt like because i was a coward, 50 people are dead. Thats the way i feel. That was Stephanie Gosk reporting. Members of the community in milpitas held an event last night and condemned the gunman who investigators say pledged his allegiance to isis before the attack. In san jose, the executive director of the Bay Area Council on islamic american relations, or cair, spoke to americans of the gay community. This attack was disgusting and tragic and we condemn it. Muslims around the world have joined in on social media using the notinmyname to condemn what happened. Survivors are now telling their chilling stories, harrowing details of how they managed to escape the carnage when so many other people could not. There are dozens of people still in the hospital and some of them still fighting for their lives but their Family Members will tell you they are the lucky ones. Hes in Critical Condition but hes alive. Very handsome. Reporter only hours earlier, his mom was among the desperate Family Member who is couldnt find their loved ones. I cant find him. So, please, keep up your prayers. Reporter those prayers find finally answered. How is he doing right now . Hes doing good. He saw me and he cried. Reporter and for the survivors, luck and timing. He left 30 minutes before the massacre. Youve lost 20 friends . About ten that are dead and ten that are injured. Reporter gene abraham had a gut feeling something just wasnt right. Why did you leave the club when you did . To be honest, i just had a feeling. I was like, you know what, i dont want to be here. Reporter a decision that may have saved his life. My heart just fell to the ground. Reporter he raced to the hospital when he heard the news. His son shot three times but also a survivor who told a harrowing story of the gunman coming back. Checking everybody on the floor and shooting to make sure that they were dead. Reporter father and son know how lucky they are. God has given you another chance. Make life a better way. So many people, in fact, showed up and they had to schedule an pointment in the next few days. Gay men are banned from donating blood unless they abstain from sex with men for at least a year. A live look at san jose and still dealing with the clouds along the coast and in the city but once again it will be clearing out as temperatures warm up. Drop in on the north bay now, we still have a wide range of temperatures from belvedere from 59 to 75 in san rafael. A nice strong sea breeze keeps our temperatures down in half moon bay. Early in the morning, we have winds rushing in at 25 miles an hour. So our temperatures are staying in the 60s and 70s. So were in for some minor changes as we go through this week. This area of low pressure gives us a stronger onshore flow and as it slowly dips in as we go through this week, there could be showers for northwestern california and then as it moves into the north bay, a lot of those showers will fizzle out and well keep a slight chance in the forecast on thursday but it looks like the rest of us pretty much stay dry and as far as how much we can see, its picking up on some very trace amounts of rain. It will be nice to get a soaking there but it looks like we can only get about maybe a hundredth of an inch. No major changes here from 60s in the peninsula today and 73 degrees on thursday. And in san francisco, mid60s with some 70s for the north bay dropping back into the 60s. Looking ahead to the weekend forecast, yes, we talked about going to the pool. Heres the reason why. The Law Enforcement personnel who stormed that well, as we talk about what happened in orlando, many stories of bravery are emerging amid the tragedy. Law enforcement personnel who stormed the nightclub who have not yet been identified but who many people are calling heroes. A situation where most people ran away from the gunfire, they ran towards it. Gabe gutierrez has that story. [ gunfire ] oh, my gosh. People are getting shot, dude. Reporter this morning, 11 Police Officers and three sheriffs deputies who exchanged fire with the gunman are being credited with saving countless lives. One of him saved by his own kevlar helmet. There were a lot of splitsecond decisions here. The ultimate goal in a situation like this is to preserve human life. Reporter Orange County sheriff Jerry Demings said he spoke with him right after the massacre. I can tell you, i saw utter anxiety in his face at that time. He said, sheriff, there are multiple bodies in there. I just saw something that ive never seen before. Reporter it was a uniformed officer working security at the pulse nightclub who first confronted the shooter. Omar mateen then took hostages and barricaded himself inside a restroom. Three hours later, a s. W. A. T. Team stormed the building killing mateen. Its been the most dark day in the history of this city. Reporter val demings is ord orlandos former police chief. They are trained to run to what most people run away from. Reporter the stories of h r harroism are not limited to the police. Reporter a lot of people would not have stopped to help anyone else. They would have been too scared to continue but you stayed and yet you helped other people survive this. How did you do that . I just im a medical assistant. I studied in college for a year and worked in the field. I feel like my calling was to help and just make sure that everybody got the attention that they needed. Wow. That was quick thinking, too. As for the officers, they have all been placed on leave as is typical after an officerinvolved shooting and theyve also been offered counseling because of what they saw. Well be right back.
