We needed this rain so desperately, so i think anybody is all that happy at least at this point. When it comes to our water supply, the big totals we have to show you are the additional snow pack that we accumulated over the course of the weekend. Now, kirkwood just under seven feet of fresh powder. And these are your snowfall totals. Lets talk about some of your amazing rainfall totals, which we were able to convert into feet for you, because they were so outrageously high. Mount tam, almost two feet of rain over the course of three to four days. Thats why were dealing with all this aftermath. At this point, its still kind of dismal out there. Overcast, gray skies. But the showers are clearing out. There is more, however, within the next 72 hours. Im going to timeout that next system, tell you which parts of the bay area are going to get the most. So stick around, thats coming up in just a little bit. But right now, back to you. Days of rain has exposed a new problem on the bay bridge. Moisture has reached a place it shouldnt, the eastern span of the bridge inside. Rain water dripping into a 6. 4 billion section. The chronicle reporting water found beneath the road deck on the suspension stretch of the east span. That is supposed to be water tight. Some experts say that could cause corrosion. The bay bridge Public Information office has scheduled a meeting for today to talk about the problem and whats being done about it. And the north bay, of course, got the brunt of the storm water this weekend. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith is live in mill valley to show us how people are bracing for the next round of rain. They got quite a bit, christie. Ye reporter thats all the talk here in mill valley. The creek that runs through downtown is dropping. This is what it looks like hours after all that rain we had has stopped. Still flowing very fast. At the height of this, the neighbors are telling us it was up higher where you see these leaves piled up. Still flowing fast, though. Businesses near here all had sandbags out front. Most were just fine, but two spent the morning cleaning up and drying out so they could reopen again today. The runoff from nearly four days of rain is coming down the hills all around mill valley this morning at joes tacos on miller. Theyre cleaning out six inches of water. Fans ran all night to help dry it out. Right next door is the 2 00 a. M. Club. The owner cleared out mud from the doorway and removed sandbags. He said that corner started filling up with water late saturday night. The back of the bar, his office soaked in about two inches of water. One owner says that its the storm drain and tidewater from the creek causing it to overflow. At the 2 00 a. M. Club, the owner Dave Marshall says he will be open today. The next hurdle that hes thinking of is wednesday and the possibility of more rain. Wednesday, you know, well watch the forecast. It takes kind of several factors for us to flood like this. A combination of heavy rains, which we havent had in a long time. Big tide holding the water back, not being able for the water to get to the bay. And just more so than anything, that onslaught of rain for over 24 hours straight, which is what we had. So well keep an eye on wednesday and hopefully well stay dry. Now, a 50foot mud slide damaged a shed in a backyard over the weekend in mill valley as well. And on sunday, a man was found dead after a jeep plunged 60 feet down off of greenwood way. It was unclear if that was exactly related to the weather, but certainly roads were slick over the weekend. We also checked in this morning at fire station 7 in mill valley. Theyre expecting more sand soon for their sandbag station, but one firefighter told me there that they handed out 300 sandbags on saturday night into sunday morning alone, and again, theyre waiting for another delivery. Just heard from a businesswoman down the creek, and she was telling us that two big trees fell right behind her business and are kind of leaning over the creek, and she wanted to let us know about that. She was kind of checking it out herself. Even though the rain itself has stopped for now, i have to tell you its still a muddy mess out here. Reporting live in mill valley, Christie Smith, nbc bay area news. Thank you, christie. The north bay got most of the rain, some of it got to the south bay. This is only the second storm this winter. Water experts say it did little to quell drought concerns. There needs to be several big storms to make a marked difference. I think it would take a good eight inches of rain basically to start seeing any measurable runoff into our local reservoirs. The water sheds are that dry. So heres a good example. Lexington reservoir, people Walking Around in an area that normally would be under water. The reservoir part of the ground water system that collects rainfall that the Water District then releases throughout the year. The district has already set a preliminary water use reduction target of 10 and would consider additional recommendations at a meeting later this month. Take a look at fulsome lake near sacramento. Theres been a dramatic change in the amount of water flowing into the reservoir there. Water levels have risen at least eight feet in the last couple of days with the reservoir climbing from 17 to 20 capacity. Thats a big change. But still a historic low. Levels are just a third of where they should have been this time of year. And people who run ski resorts in tahoe are certainly rejoicing this morning. There are reports of up to eight feet of new show. Take a look at this, as you see it climb. This is at the summit of some of the resorts. Look at the time lapse video there. You just saw it climbing and climbing. The snow came down so fast and so hard, it actually caused the unofficial snow stake to tip over there. Lake tahoe has risen more than four inches during this storm, but experts say its not enough to get back to normal. We would need five more storms just like this one in the next few weeks to get bakck to an average. All the rain has caused problems for the bay bridge. Ive got rick with us here of caltrans. This report, was it the guardrails . Youre telling us its not flowing from the roadways . We dont believe that its coming off the roadway. It looks like its something thats coming from outside of the barriers through the backside. But when it rains, we learn a few things. Water where we didnt expect it. Its one of those things that is part of the learning process for this new bridge, and part of our normal ongoing maintenance. So its going inside the casing of the bridge. How significant is it inside . Its not very significant at all. Puddling . In some places, its youll see small puddles. But for the most part, you just see areas where its wet. And if you want to take care of that it would become an issue of corrosion . Right, but it would become an issue if we werent doing regular maintenance inspections inside the structure, which is something we do with every structure. This is very much manageable. You believe theyll be able to fix this within a certain amount of time . Oh, absolutely. Give us a sense of what this looks like. If you look beyond the guy in the jeans right there. An Alaska Airlines flight made an Emergency Landing. The plane took off just after 9 00 from san jose headed to honolulu. Turning around, coming home safely. Everybodys okay. Several families are being allowed back into their homes in East San Jose this morning following an 11hour standoff situation. Swat officers were trying to catch a wanted felon. Authorities say the suspect barricaded himself inside the home at about 6 30 last night. Officers convinced the suspect to turn himself in about 5 30 this morning. He was wanted on several charges, including offenses related to weapons. No one was hurt. Detectives are investigating an attempted Home Invasion robbery in heyward, ended when the homeowner pulled out a gun, killed one of the intruders. Investigators say it happened last night on western boulevard near charity street. The homeowner told police several people broke into his house while he was there with a friend. The homeowner got a gun, began shooting. One man killed, another woman injured. She ran from the house, but was found at a hospital. Shes in critical condition. The homeowner told police several other suspects ran from the home as well, when he opened fire. Today attorney general eric holder will tell federal employees to give samesex couples the same benefits as marriages between a man and a woman. Over the weekend, holder announced the department would extend federal benefits to samesex couples. Some of those benefits include the right to decline to give testimony and a court case against the spouse. The ability to final for joint bankruptcy and also the right to collect alimony. The benefits will apply to all married samesex couples, even in states that do not recognize samesex marriage. All american defensive lineman michael sam has come out as the first active College Player to ever do so. Sam, who plays for the missouri tigers, is eligible for the nfl draft in may. If he is drafted, he could become the first openly gay player in the history of the nfl. He told espn he wanted to own his truth and make sure he could tell his story the way he wanted to tell it.
