Heavy rainfall right now extending all the way from morin county south on to san mateo, and at this point most of that moisture is just to the north of highway 92, but you do want to keep in mind, traveling is going to be rather dangerous for the next couple of hours as this main bulk of the moisture starts to come through the bay area. Widen out, and can you see where all the shower activity is headed by about lunchtime. It will be in san jose. Then we are going to be in the thick of it here in the south bay for at least a half hour. Potentially up to an hour and a half of heavy, steady rainfall. We need this rain. Just want to make sure everyone is traveling curbsly out there and show you a broad look at all the different skies across the bay area. Those rainfall amounts we saw was pretty hefty, given that it was just a 24hour period, and more rain is on the way. You notice the top number. Up to half an inch in places like San Francisco. Even koun in the south bay. Up to. 3 of an inch. This is good news considering its one of the driest years on record, and we are all over it, making sure that you are covered from every angle because, again, this is huge considering that, again, this has been one of the driest years on record. Again, more rain on the way. The first sprinkles already starting to fall into the south bay. Christina, back to you. Looking great out there. Yeah, we need the rain. As you can see, all the leaves falling off those trees. The wind hasnt played much of a role over the course of the past couple of days. Its been just the rain. Bob, good morning. Reporter good morning, marl wra and jon. It was rain at 11 00 that caused one of the power poles outside Silver Creek High School here in san jose. Sure, can you see the scorching on the upper section of that pole. It shut down electricity to the entire campus. You can see pg e below working on the problem right now. Now, they thought they would have the lights back on campus around 9 00 this morning, which would delay school a couple of hours. Then it became noon. Too late said the principal. He sent out a recording phone message to all students telling them to stay home today. Now, the majority did get that message, but for those who didnt, this is what greeted them on the way in this morning. Their teachers and staff holding up cardboard signs announcing the power is out. Turn around, go home. Many students ended up having to wait out front. Cell phones in hand. Trying to reach mom and dad to pick them up, excited about the surprise day off. Were really excited since we were, like, me and my friends were walking down there waiting for school to start again. Once we got back, everybody said school was canceled. We just started yelling and calling for our parents. The kids understand. You know, theres nothing we can do. Theyre going home, and were just telling them to take advantage of the day and catch up on your homework. And you really think thats going to happen . With our kids at silver creek, absolutely. Just staying home and study . Reporter pg e tells thaws the power pole will take some time to repair. Right now what theyre doing is theyre isolating it from the grid so they can energize the rest of the lines and get the power back on here at Silver Creek High School. The principal says there will be school tomorrow. The last update from pg es twitter account, theyre still restoring power to around 240 customers in san jose and morgan hill. Well, keeping with our storm coverage, the rain isnt the only thing. Falling trees are actually coming down across the bay area. Some places are really rough out there. I have to tell you, this is not the type of day to try to get anywhere fast. Within the last 20 minutes or so the rain really started picking up at the bay bridge toll plaza. Normally around 11 00 it would pretty much be smooth sailing through the toll plaza, but i want steve to pan around so you can see that the traffic is jammed up although way to the 980 flyover. I spoke with the chp this morning, and they tell me theyre seeing a lot of they expect the same thing throughout the afternoon. On the east bay at interstate 83 cars collided at the 580 interchange near emeriville. One driver in the blue car told me he was hit, and his truck was smashed, and a car in front of his, well, he hit that too. About 100 yards away from that, we were driving in the chp. We ran into them and the tow truck driver it suffered rearend damage this morning. In San Francisco commuters were very patient trying to deal with the on againoff again rain by car, bus, or train. The commute slow. How was your morning . Wet, but the trains were a little backed up. Other than that, it was a good commute. On hyde street in San Francisco, a new branch fell across a cable car track this morning. That happened after 6 00. This is near broadway for about 90 minutes. The tracks were blocked, and crews took wood chippers, chainsaws, and shovels to clean the mess up. The cable cars just sad there idle, didnt pass. The tree so badly damaged they cut it down, and another one split apart before. The neighbor heard the tree split. It was just a loud sound. I thought it was a bunch of trash cans falling down, but my husband was, like, no, its a huge tree that fell in the middle of the street. He sshgs like, youre going to hear the saw soon. An hour later. That was really quick. A bunch of workers with chainsaws. Heres a look at the bay bridge eastbound this morning. The chp says at this point many of the accidents theyre seeing are not necessarily related to oil coming up on the roadway. Often they say its just drivers not adjusting to the conditions. They tell me between 7 00 and 10 00 last night in oakland alone they had four or five overturned car accidents, minor injuries involved in this weather. You can see those droplets accumulating right on our camera lnz, and the camera starting to shake a little bit as our winds come in as well. This is the point in time because we already have the saturated ground out there. If we see any trees go down, you really want to watch that travel cautiously over 17 for the next few hours. A lot of rain coming through, and some wind coming along with it. Take a look at this. Take out into the east bay. Show you oakland near the oracle arena. Yep, look at that. Raiders getting a cleansing before the sundays game out there at the stadium. 62 degrees at 4 00 p. M. Temperatures are going to be chilly today. Make sure you have that umbrella with you because were not out of the woods yet. I want to show you some of the impressive totals we needed this rain desperately. Thats an impressive total for the overnight totals. Oakland hills picked up over an inch. Over a half an inch in campbell, and were on the way to a half an inch in san jose. More rain headed right into the bay area. Look at your radar at this point. You see all this heavy red, yellow, orange. Thats heavy rainfall come down. Mostly at this point still to the north of highway 29 and that will continue to be the case for the next couple of hours. All this moisture is starting to move closer and closer to the south bay, and you can see where youre getting this deep, deep red. Thats rain rates. Plus, one inch per hour. Were talking about some pretty substantial accumulations just from the batch of moisture. Just want to kind of show you where all the shower activity is headed and what were expecting from it. Its going to be in san jose as we head for about the next hour or so. Keep that in mind. 12 51 is the time were expecting the heavy, steady rainfall to work into the south bay. It will be into the morgan hill area at about 1 20. This is what were expecting throughout the rest of the day. Periods of rain through about 3 00 p. M. Getting into tonight. Showers turn light and spotty, and then were going to clear out of here as we head throughout tomorrow afternoon.
