Protesters are taking to the streets in new york city, los angeles where they shut down a freeway down south, and in oakland where they burned the American Flag. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith joins us live in oakland with a look at the aftermath and more protests, christie, are planned for tonight. Reporter yeah, thats what were hearing. We just heard from oakland mayor jean quan about this and shes calling for vandals who come into the city to stop. We spoke with residents and Business Owners who are frustrated. Many Business Owners had their windows completely smashed over the weekend. This is following the acquittal of George Zimmerman in florida for the shooting death of teenager trayvon martin. This morning city workers painted overy6 graffiti. They fixed rows of broken windows downtown at chase bank, wells fargo also boarded up. A city spokesperson believes that the majority of the vandalism in oakland happened saturday night. Crowds returned sunday much more peaceful. Many residents tell us they are upset with this verdict, but this weekend demonstrators blocked 14th and broadway, marched followed by police. There were also those who set an American Flag on fire. They vandalized a police car, set small fires. Oakland has been through this before after b. A. R. T. Rider was shot and killed. Heres the mayor. No number of police alone are going to be able to do it. The community has to take on these people because i stayed at the Police Department until 11 00. There are only like 20 people left on the corner and then, you know, so can we afford to have cops watching 20 people every night all night . These people just have to stop. She says that as theyve done before, theyre going to beom2 checking video cameras from businesses to see if they can identify and prosecute any of the vandals who did this. She says such violence and vandalism actually tarnishes the memory of trayvon martin. We spoke with Oakland Police this morning and theyre telling us so far they have a tally of just one arrest here in oakland over the weekend. While protests continue, others say they support the jurys decision, including as youd imagine, zimmermans defense lawyer. This is verdict is the correct verdict as far as im concerned. There was just not enough evidence to convict him. George zimmerman was never guilty of anything except protecting himself in selfdefense. Over the weekend the defense suggested zimmerman should never have been brought to trial. Much of George Zimmermans case was built on a claim of selfdefense as you just heard. Thats prompted questions about what constitutes selfdefense and how it differs across the country. We spoke to nbc legal analyst to explain. You are allowed to use selfdefense to fend off imminent peril and youre allowed to use deadly force if youre going to be severely injured or killed. The difference in each state though is whether you have a duty to retreat or escape before you use deadly force first. In many states theres no duty to retreat and you can stand your ground and assert deadly force without escaping even if that would have been easier to do. The department of justice is considering possible civil right violations in the George Zimmerman case. Clark says Trayvon Martins family can bring a civil suit against zimmerman. In other news we are continuing to update you on the light rail derailment in san jose. The good news is no one was hurt. This happened near the intersection of north first street and tazman drive just after 7 00 this morning. The cause remains unclear at this hour. Crews are now working to clear that train. Vta in the meantime has set up a bus to allow commuters to get through the area. They hope to have all trains up and running by the afternoon commute. The search continues today for a 21monthold girl who was reportedly seen in a parked car in oakland five days ago. Theyre searching for daphne webb. The father says he left her inside his car while he went into a convenience store. The man says his elderly mother was in the car with the child but she has dementia. The father said when he came out of the store, the girl was gone. The search has concentrated on a series of trails near the girls home along keller avenue near interstate 580. San jose police are investigating the deadly shooting of a teenage guy. Police say they received several calls about shots being fired on murtha drive in East San Jose yesterday. When officers got there a party was just breaking up. They found a teenager inside one vehicle with several gunshot wounds. That victim, whos believed to be 17 years old, was taken to the hospital where he later died. No arrests have been made and its still unclear whether the citys home 28th homicide was gang related. An Early Morning scare for People Living at an apartment collection in san mateo. A fire broke out at the bridgepoint apartment complex. This is north of highway 92. Crews were able to put out the flames within about an hour and a half. No one was hurt, but dozens of people were forced out of their apartments while the fire was in the midst of being put out. Theyre now allowed back inside their homes except for six apartment units. Lost out on a lot of sleep. I dont think ive ever seen this many fire trucks in one spot before. Firefighters say the fire started in the Utility Space inside a wall and the flames spread quickly to all three floors. Maybe theyre hoping the lunch crowd will show up to basically help replenish blood supplies to last weeks asiana crash 214. Dozens of people were transported to local hospitals and in some instances they were so badly hurt they needed blood. This morning they have not seen any passengers per se donating blood. Generally the donors have been people who work for the airport, police, the airport . [ itself o the airlines. I was standing in my office and i saw the thing and i was really shocked. This is one of our ways of giving back. We are very compassionate about our traveling public. I know i was off on the weekend that it happened. I couldnt be here so at the very least, you know, this is something i can do to help. I think it feels good to help people if they need blood. Ten counties and cities including some in the bay area are suing paint companies. They want the industry to pay the billion dollar cost to remove led based paint off millions of homes across the state. They say they violated public nuisance laws by not removing the paint from homes built before the 1978 ban. Lawyers for the paint industry argue theres scant evidence of any Health Problems associated with led paint. Pittsburghs city council is one step away from approving a new ordinance that would hold parents responsible for underage drinking parties. The social host ordinance as its called would charge or fine parents with a misdemeanor if underage drinking takes place at their home. According to a California Healthy kids survey, 46 of pittsburghs use says their main source of Alcohol Consumption came from house parties.
