jon kelley. >> i'm marla tellez. well you could say it was an iconic meeting. you got to watch live as "endeavour" passed over the top of the golden gate bridge. >> it happened not once, but twice and thousands gathered at crissy field as it happened. we have christie smith out there as the crowds greeted the shuttle. quite spectacular, christie. >> reporter: absolutely. the crowds have thinned out because it happened 20 minutes ago. we got two passes as the "endeavour" passed by the golden gate bridge twice. people said they would scream and yell and actually there was just a moment of silence as it went by. people were taken by the moment. then we heard the roar of the crowd and applause as the shuttle "endeavour" flew by the golden gate bridge the second time. people gathered at chrisrissy f were not sure if it would come back. it went up north to marin and an across the golden gate bridge south. amazing to see. it was one of five shuttles spent between 1981 and 2003. people got here early at crissy field to see history. they shared their personal stories. i was watching with three ladies and here is their reaction. >> it was amazing. i would not miss it for the world. something epic and be able to be part of it. breathtaking. >> i was emotional about it. i remember seeing "columbia" launch when i was in fifth grade. i'm glad i was here. >> i'm really proud of our country with everything going on overseas and the negative stuff. it made me so proud again. >> reporter: there was concern about people gawking and driving over trying to get a view of the shuttle. chp warning people not to do that. the roads were packed. we saw at least 1,000 people spread out on the beach. some got here at 6:45 this morning. back here live, i asked some people after this what will you do next? they will follow the path of the flight all the way to southern california. reporting live in san francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> it lived up to the hype. the space shuttle "endeavour" passed through the skies in style. >> this visit was a tribute to mountain view. we have bob redell live at nasa ames as the shuttle raced by. bob. >> reporter: that is a nice way of putting it. raced by. caught people by surprised. a lot of people were expecting "endeavour" to make a low pass at moffett field. we saw the chase plane come across. everyone had their eyes out there. then we did a 180 and this is what we saw. it sneaked behind hangar one. that is the large blimp hangar along 101. people had to turn around with their cameras and try to get as many shots as possible. it was within our view for maybe 10 to 12 seconds. a nice slow rumble. majestic to see this. despite of the confusion, i got to talking to people afterwards. there was little disappointment. thousands of people up here lining the flight line out there. in that crowd was dr. steven robinson who flew the "endeavour." >> you saw it going by around 220 miles per hour. it did not look like it because it was so large. imagine that same beast on the 747 going 17,500 miles and over and over. a real engineering marvel. >> reporter: to be on that ride? where do you feel it? >> in your heart. in your brain. >> we were looking and then it is over there. >> reporter: and nasa ames received this tribute, this honorary fly by because of the work people did here to get the shuttle up. you notice the sheheat tiles. that technology was engineered here. the astronauts would come here for the flight space simulator. the shuttle program here. they got to recognize the "endeavour." reporting live here at nasa ames, bob redell, nbc bay area news. >> plenty of shutterbugs enjoyed the flyover. the golden gate bridge. this picture just sent to us from a viewer. the "endeavour." that is a great shot. >> look at that one. >> if you would like to send us your pictures, go to nbcbayarea.com. scroll to the top of the home page and click on submit in the upper right hand corner there. >> we will try to compile them and share them. it was spectacular weather as well cooperating. if you woke up, you wonder why it is showing up after 10:00. we would have patchy low clouds as it would block the view of at the 8:00 hour. notice the temperatures inland have warmed up. as we look at the low clouds, as you watched here live on nbc bay area, we still have low clouds. they are hung up on the ocean facing side out to the coast almost to santa cruz. monterrey bay and santa cruz. i believe it will head to brandenburg air force base, they will see low clouds there. the clouds hanging out on the shore line. the clouds you see there, some high clouds will make for a nice sunset. one of the things in the weather, if you are south of san jose or north bay, temperatures are coming up. today is the last full day of summer as we start fall tomorrow morning. our temperatures in the seven-day forecast have actually started to warm up. we are looking at a warmer forecast for tomorrow. we will have a full look at that in the seven-day forecast coming up. here it is, the first forecast for fall. i cannot believe it's here. i'm happy things worked out this morning. >> some are hanging on. thank you. protesters angry over a police shooting vandalized the mission district police station overnight. officers tell us several dozen people took to the street about 10:00 p.m. and spray painting the words "killers" on the door of the station. the group was protesting the officer-involved shooting that happened an hour before. the officer shot a gang member at 14th street. that suspect is expected to survive. a loaded gun was recovered at the scene. a person out for a walk in san francisco was struck and killed by a car. this happened overnight. officers say an adult man was walking near the intersection near bayshore boulevard and cesar chavez street. police are investigating a double shooting in east san jose. it happened at the intersection of flanagan drive near king road. two men were shot and sent to the hospital. one said to have life threatening injuries. no arrests have been made. this comes as san jose has a sharp increase in violent crime. a veteran bay area gay rights advocate is said to appear in the san francisco court on felony child porn charges. 66-year-old larry brinkan turned himself in yesterday. he was arrested back in june on similar charges. at the time, the d.a. said it needed to investigate further. he worked with san francisco's human rights commission for 22 years before retiring in 2010. we now know the two men accused of killing a union city mother and setting her body on fire will stand trial. salvador and hector garcia are expected to enter pleas next month. garcia is a drug dealer and killed monica alfaro because she refused to i.d. the men who robbed them. they killed her and set her body on fire and dumped her body in mid-july. tonight, uc berkeley police will give details on a flashes seen at the university village apartments in albany. those apartments are housing cal students with children. the man entered the home on monday and exposed himself to a woman and her children. now they learned he may have gone into two other university village apartments in the past week. in all three case, the man pretended to be a maintenance worker and claimed to look for the source of a water leak. a town hall meeting is scheduled for 7:00 tonight to give residents more information. coming up, fund raising and fanfare. the latest for mitt romney's stops in the bay area today and when president obama plans to make his next visit. with the jobs report quickly on the rise in the bay area, is it enough to help the state trend upwards as well? you see the view over san francisco. we had nothing but sunshine there which was great because earlier this morning, we had a lot of low clouds. that was an issue. look at temperatures. the numbers are now in the mid-70s in fairfield down to gilroy and you can see we have light winds or lighter winds in fairfield as the sea breeze is backing off. if you head out to the giants game, we have nice conditions. a bit on the cool side. 60 degrees. the magic number is three. depending what the dodger does against the reds and we do against the padres. satellite view shows you the high clouds from the west. the upper low will track in from the north through the weekend. that will bring some cooler on sunday. you can see the clouds there lifting on the east side of the low, but our temperatures today are going to warm up. in fact, tomorrow will be a little warmer. just some high clouds passing by as we kick off the weekend. 76 degrees. low to mid-80s. south around morgan hill and the tri-valley. in the north bay, 70s and 80s in the forecast. 66 in san francisco. the three-day forecast, first day of fall is tomorrow. i do think it will be the warmest day as you can see upper 80s inland. trending a bit cooler sunday into monday. now it is looking like fall toward the end of the seven-day forecast. chilly into next week. thank you. still ahead at 11:00, why finding a parking space could be harder in parts of the bay area today. and giants players come to the defense of the 49ers quarterback alex smith after he was warned to stop wearing the giants hat. we will tell you what was tweeted. here is more of the flight of "endeavour." we'll be right back.
