Live in brentwood with the latest. Reporter well, terry, firefighters just finished wrapping up putting out this fire here in brentwood. It did threaten almost ten home here. That fire started about 7 30 tonight and fanned by high winds. Firefighters faced the additional challenge of low humidity and temperatures in the high 90s. Flames also threatened a Large Industrial and commercial park. But firefighters established a line to prevent it from burning. And they did the same to protect the houses. We did some homes threaten said on the west side of the fire. Some of those houses are in the framing phase, so we took that very seriously. And we went one of our units there first to protect those structures to make sure we didnt burn those two houses down. Firefighters say their biggest challenge tonight was a shortage of resources. They were first called to fight this fire. What started as a car fire quickly spread to 20 acres. Flames race said up the hillside threatening about 100 homes east of hill crest. Fortunately, no homes burned. But before this fire was out, some crews were called out to tackle this fire in brentwood. Now firefighters were able to hold this fire to just five acres. But while all this was going on, they got another call about a structure fire, a house fire going on at the same time. Fortunately, that house had sprinkler jshz the water was able to douse that fire. But obviously this is a clear example of when firefighters were stretched thin. Reporting live in brentwood. Now dispatch audio reveals quick work by San Francisco police and mun ae bus drivers that helped in the safe return of an infant kid napped from her fathers car. Piecing together how this all went down, hes live in the neighborhood where police say that child was taken. Sergio. Reporter the good news is that child is safely with their family. This all started around 8 30. The father was apparently looking away for just a few minutes to prepare a bottle for that child. And thats when alleged kidnapper snatched the child right out of his car. According to police the woman allegedly took the baby about 8 30 this morning. Then she walked to nearby bus stop holding the challenge. Then about that time police were called and they quickly started tracking that kidnapper. A female entering with a baby possibly reporter she hopped an on express muni bus. The two hopped off here at a walgreens. The manager told me off camera the woman looked like she was on drugs and hadnt bathed for a while. The child was in good shape. At this point dispatchers were repeating the description. The accused kidnapper hopped on another bus and thats when an alert mun ae driver heard the bulletin. He called for help. The baby was aboard his bus. The Police Caught up to them and the woman is being held on kidnapping charges. Thanks to some alert witnesses and bus Drivers Police officers were able to recover that child in about half an hour. The child has been taken to the Childrens Hospital just as a precaution. Sergio, thank you very much. Were learning more about a car crash in brentwood that landed nine people in the hospital last night. It was a headon collision between a driver and a stolen car going the wrong way. And a van with seven people inside including three children. It happened about 8 00. Helicopters had to come in to transport the victims. The man suspected of driving the stolen honda accord was treated for minor injuries and then aretsed. Two people remain in the hospital. A Violent Crime and yet no suspect or motive. Police looking for a suspect who shot a woman. Several neighbors heard that gunfire. We heard around six gunshots. And when we came out we just saw the cops and the streets were closed. The victim was treated for nonlife threatening injuries at the hospital. New details at a Mountain View standoff. Turns out the couple involved in the standoff were actually arrested back in april when Police Allegedly found a gun, meth, and an atm machine in their home. This morning a crisis notionation team and a swat teamworked for more than five hours with the fight between the couple. They refused to come out of their home. When they finally did peacefully vunder, they were arrested. Its not clear what charges theyre faced with this time. Crews responded to a three alarm fire at a home in bay point. The flames jumped from one home to another before crews put it out. Took firefighters roughly an hour to extingsuish the flames. The wend and choppy water were blamed for a boating accident last night. Two men and a boy were rescued. A kayaker reported the problem to 911. Another officer on a jet ski leaps onto the boat finally bringing it to a stop. Once i was close enough, it was just a matter of stepping from his boat into that boat. Prosecutors are responsible for putting serious criminals behind bars. But San FranciscoDistrict Attorney george gascone is trying something different. He says prosecutors need to think past punishment to rehabilitation. To prove his point hes taking his team on regular trips to san quintan for a facetoface with inmates. Reporter inmate john miles has called the department of corrections home for the last 22 years. I was arrested in 1995 for first degree murder. Reporter he says hes dedicated those years to transformation and now is state crisis counselor. Theres a lot of remorse and lot of regret. If you sit up with that for the past 22 years, its bound to change me. Reporter now he sits with inmates and prosecutors from the San FranciscoDistrict Attorneys office. Theyre coming together as part of a new effort meant to the humanize the criminal justice system. We do need to be punish if we commit any crimes. But also were not past being rehabilitated. Reporter taking his prosecutors to san quintan for several years now. He says prosecutors have never struggled filling jail cells. But he believes theyve missed the mark when it comes to rehabilitation. We have incarcerated more people than any other nation in the world. Its filled. Reporter recent criminal justice reforms mean more prisoners will be released earlier than expected. In fact some who expected to die behind bars are now getting a reprieve. He wants his office to make that transition successful. When you come out, we want to facilitate you coming back and not go back again. My daughter, marissa, is a da, asked me one day why in the world do i spend so much time with the criminals in san quintan prison . I said theyre not quite the way you imagine them. And you can see its dropping temperatures not that much but 1 degree cooler. Its not much but its a sign the atmosphere is beginning to shift to temperatures that wont be as hot for tomorrow. So that is good news as youre trying to get off on that monday morning commute. Not nearly as mild and as uncomfortable. You have 70 for the trivalley. Across the east bay, 63. And matchy areas in San Francisco and 58 degrees. The only reason why temperatures will not be as hot for tomorrow is that High Pressure that brought the heat is beginning to move off towards the east. So that allows this trough affHigh Pressure move off for the next four days. Thats why were confident we wont see the hot temperatures we saw this weekend for the next week.
