They threatened them both and tried to use them as leverage against each other to get money. Its very scary. Im still shaking. Reporter this mother, who didnt want to be identified, says supposed kidnappers called her at work, claiming to have her daughter, and theyd kill her if she told anyone and didnt pay up. He goes, im going to let you stalk to her right now. Terrified, she left notes for coworkers to call police. Meanwhile, her dausghter was walking through this park alone but on the phone with other scammers who claimed they had kidnapped her mom. They made me believe that she was with them. After two hours, the mom made it to a western union. The caller wanted money sent to mexico, but officers caught up with her and the daughter at the park unharmed. And they said, we have your daughter. We have her, you know. And right before i gave them the transaction number for the money. Reporter police say its the second time this has happened in union city. They cant trace the call because the number used was fake. And in case this happens to you ask for the victim. Tell them you want to talk to them because one other thing theyll do is theyll have somebody in the background like screaming or yelling like theyre being hurt. Reporter also try to get ahold of the victim or others on social media. Fremont police have also seen incidents of this scam. Both departments now spreading the ward. Ian cull, nbc bay area news. The search is over. Berkeley police were unable to find a man who reportedly had a rifle near the Berkeley Marina today. Police searched the area for most of the afternoon and evening. Shortly after noon, police got a call about a man on a pedestrian overcrossing who appeared to be carrying a rifle. That man was then seen heading to Mclaughlin Eastshore state park. Officers shut down roads nearby while they conducted that search, but they came up with nothing. Four asian cafes in the south bay may be linked to murder cases that have all gone cold. The District Attorney needs to review the case and make a charging decision. An important meeting is still taking place right now in oakland. City council is considering forming an independent police commission, and that commission would have more clout than the usual review board or auditor. In fact, this one would have the authority to fire the police chief. The Police Officers association, though, opposes that plan. Some activists say it doesnt go far enough.
