Killed last week when a man drove a truck into crowds of people in nice. Friends and family have been searching for him for days and putting up these fliers. For the students there was hope and now thats gone. Reporter thats right. People were trying to remain hopeful and now the Campus Community is shocked and saddened that one of their own was killed in such a horrific attack. Nicholas leslie was part of uc berkeleys Study Abroad Program in nice and was killed in the bastille day attack and the news spread quickly on campus. I heard it through another friend caught in the attack. Reporter he says when his friend was safe she sent out a post saying that people were trying to find the 20yearold and the worst is confirmed. It is tragic. Reporter clare holmes says that the campus is devastated and in mourning. We have been cooperating with officials on the ground to try to find nick and bring him home. Unfortunately, the news was tragic today. Reporter 85 students are in the program, she says within two hours the Program Director k accounted for the students but unable to locate leslie. He is described as talented and kind. Students are stunned. I cant really i guess comprehend that. Reporter this comes weeks after tarishi jain was killed in an attack in bangladesh. Three uc Berkeley Students were injured in that attack. Were told that a vigil is being planned for 4 30 monday afternoon here. Reporting live at uc berkeley, Christie Smith nbc bay area news. There are new details about the investigation into the nice truck attack. French police say the suspect has been picked up on closed Circuit Television at least two times before the attack in the same truck scouting out his route in advance. Authorities took in another man and woman into custody for questioning. They are acquaintances of the suspect. More on the investigation is coming up in 30 minutes. Now to a developing story in louisiana. A first look after three officers are gunned down in what is described as an ambush. Montrell jackson, matthew gerald, married with two children. And brad garafolo a father of four. The chaos erupted at 9 00 this morning with a call about gunfire at a gas station. The gunman accused of luring the officers into a trap armed with a rifle and dressed in black. He was killed in a shootout with police. Two other persons of interest have been released. The motive remains on clear but comes on the heels of the shooting death of alton sterling earlier this month. The gunman was identified as gavin long. He lived in kansas city and doesnt appear he had any links to baton rouge. He may have been driving a stolen rental car and belonged to a black separatist group. He had a website and on that website he described himself as a quote freedom strategist life coach, nutritionist, author and spiritual adviser. In the marines he was a Data Network Specialist and served an eight month tour in iraq in 2008. Bay area officers are reacting with the attacks in baton rouge with solidarity. We are now at the santa clara sheriffs department. How are they dealing with the death of more officers . Concerned about copy cat crimes. Sheriffs deputies are on heightened alert and some are asking to change the way they patrol. A nation divided by violence is bringing Police Officers around the country together. Santa clara sheriffs deputy Roger Winslow is troubled because the shooting coming less than two weeks after an ambush in dallas left five officers dead. Now some santa clara sheriffs deputies arent taking any chances requesting to do patrols in teams of two. Some members have asked for it. They it absolutely when they see what is going on in the nation and one of the ways to mitigate attacks is to have two people that another set of eyes one that is concentrating on driving and one is looking for the bad stuff going on around us. Reporter former San Francisco police chief says that officers need to be on high alert. The officers just have to be very much aware of whats happening on the streets in their community. And they have to be quick to call for backup, you know, i mean, it seems that they have to be aware that theres a potential threat out there every day. Reporter the shooting in baton rouge is also sparking a call for change from Law Enforcement. The san jose Police Officers association issued this statement saying when law and order breaks down to the point our nation experience ten Law Enforcement officers killed over a tenday period then a serious look at who we are and what we have become must take place. The shootings are a reminder that an inherently dangerous job is growing more dangerous and some question what impact the shootings will have on efforts to increase staffing at police and sheriffs departments in the bay area. The Highway Patrol telling us an 82yearold woman was driving the car. It was a kia sedan. She was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene. No word on what caused the accident. San jose police are investigating a homicide in the japantown area. This is a half mile from police headquarters. Officer found a man dead with at least one stab wound and no much else is being released right now. This is the citys 27th homicide of the year. Dozens of people are out of their homes after a fire at a san jose highrise breaking out at 9 30 in the morning. The buildings sprinklers put out the fire but all units had to be vacated because of the water damage. This is on the corner of 6th and santa clara streets. Police escorted people in and out of the building to grab a few things because they will be out for a few days. They were sheltered in a vta bus and they had to go back in and get their belongings out. It will be about a week to dry the building out and make sure the electrical is in good shape. When Police Caught up with the suspect he rammed the patrol car. Police used tasers and a police dog to catch the suspect. Officers arrested him but not before he stabbed the canine several times. One officer was hurt and is expected to recover. The dog is expected to be okay as well. Police identify the driver as a 33yearold from walnut creek. He is in the hospital but his next stop will be jail. The name of the dog injured is shana. This is her last year. Shana and her handler did demonstrations for a nonprofit called pepper your canine. She suffered stab wounds to her neck and head but expected to make a full recovery. A vacation took a terrible turn for a berkeley family this weekend. A father and 6yearold girl were washed out to sea. They were pulled from the water and given cpr, rushed to the hospital but neither survived. The gunman got out of the car and started shooting killing one and injuring the other. An 11yearold boy is hit by a car in danville. This happened just before 1 00 this afternoon. The boy was on a bicycle at the time. He had to be air lifted to a hospital. This crash happening at the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. It reflects on her natural willingness to share a love of the mountains and of people. And a love of being helpful.
