Today parts of the tail section were brought to shore. The black boxes will play a major role in figuring out what caused the plane to go down killing all 162 people on board. Great news they have the boxes. Very good news. They are popping up in more places. Unmanned drones are taking over the skies. And the small flying devices are becoming increasingly controversial, not to mention dangerous. Lawmakers are figuring out how to regulate the drones. Our Senior Investigative reporter Stephen Stock looked into faa data. He showed us more and more drones are flying too close for comfort near passenger planes. Reporter experts believe that the numbers of these close calls between drones and airplanes are, quote, going in the wrong direction, up. And they say that jeopardizes your safety. Whenever you fly. When we hear the term drones, most of us think of these, model airplanes used for stunts by hobbyist. Or these, large armed military spy planes. But consider this. This is video taken from a drone flying a medical mission in haiti. Its new, and a lot of people dont really know what its about, what exactly what do they do. He is ceo and founder of zm interactive, a San Francisco Company Whose entire Business Plan is based on the use of drones. You know if you fly, you must follow the rules, like anything else. They can be a great tool. They can also be really dangerous if you dont use them safely. Reporter and whether americans, the federal aviation administration, or Congress Like it or not, drones what are technically known as Unmanned Aircraft systems, have already taken off elsewhere around the world. In other countries, thousands of drones now legally fly, delivering emergency supplies monitoring pharmacy and construction sites, and even filming movies. People use the word drone. We dont like the word. We dont use it to describe our regales. Reporter his Menlo Park Company already do amazing and life changing things with Unmanned Aircraft. They just do it in other countries besides the u. S. My view is that its absolutely amazing that people are getting excited about using this technology. Flying is inherently exciting. Reporter these pictures tell the story of how drones can change the world. A trek through mud using trucks that can take days to get critical medical supplies to a remote region in Papua New Guinea takes a matter net flying vehicle only hours. How to guide Public Perception around this new technology is one of the big challenges that we have to deal with. Reporter but congress and the faa continue to wrestle with whether or not to allow commercial use of drones here. Right now all commercial use of drones is banned in the u. S. With only a handful exceptions granted by the faa. Thats the main issue. You have seconds to react. Reporter Frederick Robinson is a commercial captain. He and other pilots worry that some day a drone will bring down a commercial jet, just like that flock of birds brought down Us Airways Flight 1549 over new yorks hudson river. Thats hard to spot when youre in the cockpit. Reporter just in the last 11 months of 2014 according to the faa, there were almost 200 sightings of drones near the flight paths of commercial aircraft in the u. S. So yes, it does scare me. Reporter according to the faa, some drones have even been spotted flying thousands of feet off the ground like the one seen by a pilot flying near burbank at 8,000 feet passing near a planes wing. Other drones are big. One was described as the size of a trash can, or another drone spotted at 4500 feet above sausalito. The pilot calling it a close call. Then there was the drone spotted only a couple hundred feet off the runway at San Jose Mineta International airport. California, new york and florida led the nation in these drone sightings. Its unacceptable. Reporter captain lee moak is president of the Airline Pilots association. He testified before Congress Late last year about the dangers of unregulated drones in the u. S. Because even one near miss if it was a little left or a little right could have created a larger problem. Well need to address this. Reporter the faa data also shows many of the drone sightings have come as commercial airlines were taking off or landing. The most vulnerable time safetywise during flight. Even drone advocates say this trend of close calls has to change before someone gets hurt. If you dont know how to use it, youll crash it. And its pretty dangerous. You have to learn how to do it safe and then you get better result for what youre trying to do. I absolutely dont want to feel that myself myself, my loved ones are ever threatened when they get on an airliner. Reporter in a statement emailed to nbc bay area the faa said it is quote, still in the process of executing a plan for safe and staged integration of Unmanned Aircraft into the National Airspace system. In fact the faa has been studying and working on this issue for a decade ten years. And critics say it must move faster because like it or not, they say more and more drones will be flying around the world and in our skies whether or not the faa or Congress Acts to regulate them. Couldve parked a little bit closer. Its gonna be dark by the time i get there. Geico. Proudly serving the military for over 75 years. Happening right now, the Golden Gate Bridge is back open as you can see. Not a lot of people on it because, you know it wasnt supposed to reopen until 4 00 tomorrow morning. But 9 30 tonight all of the sudden we get this word. The work is done. Come on out and enjoy the bridge. Not a lot of people have gotten the word but they will over the next several hours. 6 1 2 hours ahead of schedule. Theyve installed the new movable barrier intended to prevent headon collisions. And it looks like it is very quiet right now. In the morning it could be another story. Well have continuing coverage on the Golden Gate Bridge closure and opening. Tomorrow morning mike inouye will be watching the traffic closely. It will be different for folks crossing the bridge. Hell have you updated on today in the bay. Lets check weather one more time. Here is rob mayeda. The bridge looks good. But fog could be a bit of an issue. Right now visibility is already down to less than a half mile across the north bay. And its the fog and the air quality that will be our weather headlines. Heading into tomorrow morning, patchy dense fog at times. It could slow your morning drive. Well see the low clouds breaking up around midnight. For the afternoon highs in the low to mid60s. Not a bad way to start your workweek with low 60s around san jose. Closer to 60 in San Francisco. For the north bay, well see patchy thick fog and low 60s for the afternoon. And could get as warm as the mid60s through about the middle part of the week. So far weve been keeping pace with the thing you dont want to break this record. This is the alltime record dry january we saw last year. So far first third of the month, no rain. But that record is safe. Well will not end the month without any rain. In fact, by the end of the week well see the next storm system come on in. As we get into friday afternoon and saturday, this should be the most significant rainfall since about december 19th. So in the forecast as it moves forward, dry weather through thursday except late friday in the north bay, youll see a chance of the rain. Saturday looks rainy across the bay area including san jose and San Francisco. Late into saturday, were planning on the rain coming back in. Areas around the north bay possibly an inch or two or more. Areas north of San Francisco will certainly see the most. A very different looking week. One that is going to have good air quality and rain coming back in. A rainy start throughout the day on saturday. Thats when the heaviest rain should fall. Clearing skies, cooler temperatures with sunny skies and some passing showers there wrapping up the weekend and heading into next week. Back to you. Rob, thanks a lot. Let it rain. Finally tonight, he is keeping mans best friend toasty with a doghouse that you just cant find in a pet store. A South Carolina man redesigned this igloo home for his pet. And he did it look at, this without installing a heater inside that. Here show he did it. Bought some pipe here like you run under the house for a vent. And i just hooked it up to my heater and ran it to the vent on my doghouse here. I love it. There is a man who loves that dog, right . Firefighters say it does look like its a safe setup because he doesnt have the heater inside. Its also free from electrical cords. So that is one pampered pooch, right there. Are you thinking about doing this for your animals . They are so pampered. Ive done enough for those dogs thats for sure, they have your house. Thats right. Its their castle. Thank you very much for joining us tonight. Hope you have a great week. See you tomorrow. Youre watching an nbc bay area news special, bay area proud. Even to this day, they dont know what theyve done. Two families bonded by the unimaginable, now share a remarkable and some would say unbelievable connection. I would probably say someone made this story up. Plus, hes done what no other coach in the history of California Community colleges has ever done hurry up lets go but its not what he is doing on the court that gives him the most satisfaction. Im just giving back. Thats all i want to do is give back. And a group of Senior Citizens carve out a special gift for wounded veterans. I would shed a few tears and go back and work on it some more
