Standstill. Locally and nationally most of the protests have been peaceful but there are flareups, damage, and injuries. You see here shattered windows at this oakland bank. There are also several small fires being set. Now, in the heart of all this, ferguson, missouri, where Michael Brown was killed. There is some serious damage in parts of that town. Buildings set on fire. Stores looted. And a community engulfed in anger, disappointment, and disorder. Good evening, and thanks for being with us. Im raj mathai. Im jessica aguirre. Lets take you back out. Lanes of 580 are moving back again now. But earlier tonight a large group of protesters marched up the lakeshore onramp, blocking traffic there for hours. They were Holding Signs saying the people say guilty, chanting no justice for Michael Brown. Police officers were on the side at one point. Some 710 officers were on the streets of oakland tonight. Those officers, some of them holding the line, making sure it did not get violent with the cars and the drivers trying to get through those lanes. We have several reports this evening. Lets begin with nbc bay areas cheryl hurd. Cheryl, 1 00 a. M. In ferguson right now. This story is far from over. Reporter thats right, raj. There was a lot of buildup to tonights announcement. It was months in the making. And when the announcement came down that the grand jury will not charge Ferguson Police officer Darren Wilson, people reacted strongly and in some cases violently. Protesters took to the streets of ferguson. Rocks and bottles started flying, along with tear gas from police. Demonstrators set several buildings on fire, looting some of them. Vandals smashed police car windows, some of even trying otip it over. In spite of the brown family and president obama asking for peaceful protest. We need to recognize that this is not just an issue for ferguson, this is an issue for america. Reporter and tonight ferguson along with cities across america are reacting to the grand jurys decision not to indict Police OfficerDarren Wilson. Several buildings are on fire. People marching in the streets. Police in riot gear surrounding buildings and protesters. Gunshots were fired if the area. Civil rights leader al sharpton reacting. It was expected but still an absolute blow to those of us that wanted to see a fair and open trial. I think that it is clear that even when you see a blow coming that you expected, it still hurts nonetheless. The rioting in the streets of ferguson comes after months of anticipation for this decision. Determined that no probable cause exists to fool any charge against officer wilson and returned a no true bill on each of the five indictments. Reporter Police OfficerDarren Wilson will not face charges in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. They met on 25 separate days in the last three months, heard more than 70 hours of testimony from about 60 witnesses. Reporter the grand jury was made up of nine whites and three blacks. They took only two days to deliberate. Following the announcement, Michael Browns family release the a statement saying in part, while we understand that many others share our pain, we ask you that channel your frustration in ways that will make a positive change. We need to Work Together to fix the system that allowed this to happen. Michael browns parents will hold a nus conference tomorrews morning in st. Louis. Because of everything going on in ferguson there are flight restrictions at the st. Louis airport until further notice. Raj, back to you. Okay. Thank you, cheryl. You hear those gunshots. Tense moments for our nbc reporter on the ground. This is jay gray and his nbc crew in ferguson just a couple hours ago. A spray of gunfire went off behind jay as he was preparing for a live report. The crew did safely duck inside. Not clear if the shots were fired by police or protesters. Jay said several bullets struck that building you see there that they took cover in. Lets bring you to oakland now. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney joins us live from there. Terry, whats the situation right now . Reporter everything changed in the last 30 minutes. Hundreds of protesters who were not up at Franco Gallo Plaza a half hour ago are now coming down broadway right across the street where i am at the Oakland Police department. Moments ago someone rolled a white trailer right towards and right through the police line up there. Theyre now pulling it babbling this way as you can see over there. I would say at least 100 officers with their helmets on holding back the protesters halfway between 7th and 8th, not far at all from the Oakland Police department. Earlier this evening it was a far different scene. Although protesters were very loud and very emotional. What you going to do . Were going to enter the streets. Into the streets the grand jurys decision sent a couple hundred protesters who are gathered at Franco Gallo Plaza streaming into the streets, shutting down 14th and broadway. Whats going to happen in the future . Like what do i look like bringing a kid into the world, a black male into this world, for him to get shot on the street . They also held a silent liein in memory of Michael Brown. And then what do we want . Justice at least give us something to go on. But to have nothing is just it takes your guts away. Reporter there has been some vandalism such as at this chase bank at 20th and webster and a report of another incident closer to city hall. About a dozen protesters held a separate candlelight vigil. If you are black or brown in this country, you are not human. People get to take your lives and not be accountable for that. Reporter on and off throughout the evening the group at 14th and broadway stopped traffic to get their message out. The whole system is guilty as hell. Reporter were here live on broadway near the Oakland Police department on 7th street. As you can see, theres well over 100 officers here from a number of different Agencies Holding back the protesters halfway up the street. We keep hearing these pops. I believe there are fireworks. Police are not responding in any especially aggressive way toward those sounds. You can see theyve got the protesters held halfway down the street. Plenty of officers from all over the east bay. Chp out here as well. We will keep you posted as the evening goes on. Live in oakland, Terry Mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. Terry, thank you. From the ground level lets take you upstairs now up high to our nbc chopper, trying to get some footage here. You see a lot of people gathering toward Terry Mcsweeney. Theyve left 580 just about 30 minutes ago heading toward terry and back into town. You see a lot of people dispersing. But as weve seen protests pass in years past these things tend to get more violent and rogue as we approach the midnight hour. Its near midnight here on the west coast, but take a look at this. It is now 1 08 a. M. In ferguson, missouri and its not stopped those are several cars, if you can make that out, down below in a parking lot, it looks, in ferguson on fire. And this has been consistent to a lot of parts in ferguson for the last few hours. Buildings have been set on fire. Businesses. As you can see now, live pictures in ferguson, missouri of several cars lit on fire. Thankfully, we dont see any people around them, but well continue to monitor this situation, in this live footage throughout this newscast. Quite the contrast in San Francisco. There were some demonstrations early on, very shortlived, most in the mission district, with many people opting instead to gather at glide Memorial Church downtown. Nbc bay areas Nanette Miranda joins us in the city. This was also emotional but very contained here. Reporter very contained and very positive. The idea is to open up the dialogue, which can then lead people to come up with solutions. The crowd let out a collective gasp when the announcement came that no charges would be filed against officer Darren Wilson for the death of Michael Brown. Reverend Cecil Williams allowed Community Members to take the microphone at glide Memorial Church to express their feelings. Though this was a peaceful way to vent, people were no less angry. Its an absolute outrage. And when i hear Something Like that happen up there and this young man doesnt get any justice, it breaks any heart. The system is broken. The system in many, many ways is broken. But the people who are applying the system are on a different level than everybody else. Reporter but one lone voice agreed the grand jury did its job. What more can you ask for . The system works. You just have to believe in it. It works. Reporter still, tonights ferguson decision gives mothers of africanamerican boys reason to worry. Every day our son leaves its that oh, god, i never want to get that phone call. I never want to hear that something has happened. Reporter and some got the sense that things wont change for young black men. Im sorry. Being a person of color, i cant change that situation. I cant avoid that. Reporter the naacp met with the mayors staff today to talk about ways to improve relations with the black community. At the top of the list, hiring more africanamerican Police Officers.
