Of course, the thing that gets people really excited around here these days is rain. Any kind of rain. Rob, any chance of rain . Right now it looks like were going to head back to the workweek. Youll want your winter coat and hope the heater works in the car tomorrow morning. Down to 45 degrees in napa. We should see in the areas that clear out around the north bay 30 degree temperatures tomorrow morning. 40s and 50s elsewhere. And right now the radar is still high. You can see some returns here well offshore. A lot of clouds over most of the bay area right now. But notice the systems offshore. Instead of going west to east, theyre moving from south to north. Blocked temporarily by a ridge of High Pressure. But that set to give way as we watch a series of systems now stacking up in the pacific, heading towards the bay area. We will see at least three opportunities for rain this week, coming up in our microclimate forecast. President obama not mincing words after another american hostage is killed by the terrorist group isis. Peter kassig was kidnapped just over a year ago while in syria doing humanitarian work. His family says hell be remembered how he lived, not for his brutal death. Richard engel reports the killing was revealed in an isis video released today. Unfortunately, this graphic 16minute video put out by isis has been authenticated, making peter kassig the fifth western hostage murdered by isis since august and the third american. Today president obama called his murder an act of pure evil by a terrorist group that the world rightly associates with inhumanity. The 26yearold former army ranger from indiana who served in iraq traveled to syria last year to volunteer as a medic while delivering supply, isis militants stopped him at a checkpoint and kidnapped him. Kassig, who converted to islam and changed his name to abdur rahem. At time his cellmates were taken one by one to be murdered. He knew his time would come. Last month, kassigs father ed read a letter written to the family by their son. Dont worry, dad. If i go down, i wont go down thinking anything but what i know to be true, that you and mom love me more than the moon and the stars. The kassig family remembered his humanitarian work, sharing an audio recording of kassig before he was taken captive. I was able to share a little bit of hope and comfort with some people. Unlike other execution videos put out by isis, this one did not end with a specific threat to kill another western hostage. The group simply doesnt have that many western hostages left to kill. Richard engel, nbc news, istanbul. We will have continuing coverage on the isis killing on air and online at nbcbayarea. Com. It is the top story on our u. S. And world section right now. And that includes sending a bit of christmas cheer to our troops overseas. The san jose giants hosted operation care and comfort today for hundreds of volunteers. They got together to package thousands of pounds of treats in the holiday care packages for our military personnel in afghanistan, iraq and africa. The care packages are major morale boosters for the troops who open the boxes and find a bit of home inside. You know, the boxes contain everything from halloween candy that kids have generously donated and parents are thrilled to get out of their houses to hygiene items, food items, and entertainment. Operation care and comfort has provided more than a Million Pounds of care packages for our troops since 2003. I totally get that. Opening up that box and seeing your favorite candy or something you recognize. Reminds you of home. Got to be good. Checking in now rob mayeda stand big with the microclimate forecast. The forecast looks pretty chilly for parts of the bay area. Right now in napa you have 42 degrees. We have cooler dryer air come on in. Parts of the north bay, dew point temperatures right now in the mid30s that is the temperature the air try to cool towards as we approach sunrise. As the clouds stay away from the north bay, its possible we might see the numbers in the mid to upper 30s for tomorrow morning. 50 in san jose. A bit more mild, closer to the water. San francisco 59 degrees. But most of the bay area right now seeing a 24hour temperature change. Almost about 5 degrees for our inland locations around concord, san martin. Down right chilly for the next couple of mornings. Right now the radar is dry. What limb rain we have offshore is trying to move through some of the dryer air we have over the bay area. A lot of the precipitation just evaporates on contact as it falls through the dryer air below there is a lot of moisture offshore, but its moving at least for now south to north. Blocked by a temporary wall of High Pressure here, which has helped to push the offshore winds, cooler dryer air coming down. So the mornings will be chilly. But the afternoon should be pretty mild. In fact, as we get towards tuesday, the winds change direction a little bit. May see some highs approaching 70 south of san jose for tuesday afternoon before some bigger changes arrive. Obviously talk about some rain coming in for tuesday night and wednesday. So during the day monday, partly cloudy skies to mostly cloudy conditions. No rain in the forecast for monday. Just a chilly start to your morning with highs in the mid to upper 60s around san jose. Low to mid60s around San Francisco. Mid60s in the north bay. Mid to upper 60s around the trivalley. So that high will finally give ground. As we get into tuesday night and wednesday, there is the first system due in. Another one for thursday. And yet one more for saturday. But the main bullseye for the rainfall does appear to be north of San Francisco. So for that wednesday system, for sure youll notice higher totals here north of santa rosa. Maybe up to half inch north of santa rosa. And obviously a lot less south down toward the south bay that will be the ridge breaker that comes for wednesday that helps to weaken that ridge of High Pressure. Well see another system come on in as we get into thursday. And one more as we head into the weekend. How this will play out over the next five days, for places in the north bay, youll have the best opportunity for rain late tuesday into wednesday and thursday. A little less further south and east out toward livermore and san jose towards San Francisco. South bay may miss out until about wednesday. Thursday and friday, that rain may stay off to the north. You see there San Francisco tuesday late into wednesday and thursday could see showers and well see that next system by the way impact at least the start of the weekend. Plan on some rain drops to kick off next saturday, and then another system will follow that as we head into monday. Hopefully a sign of more things to come and nor sierra snow in the forecast. Bring it on. It looks good. Thanks, rob. Coming up next at 11 00, this is hard to say. Chocolate lovers, listen up there. Could be a shortage. Running low on the dark stuff here . Yes. Scientists are now working on fastgrowing plants that can produce seven times as much cocoa. But there is a tradeoff. The final product might not be as sweet. It will do. Its time to talk turkey. The cost of your thanksgiving bird is on the rise this year. You can blame a drought from two yearsing. It jacked up the price of corn which is what they feed turkeys to plump them up. It translates to an extra 10 cents a pound. Dont expect to pay for that out of your wallet. Grocery stores usually keep their price on turkeys below market values with hopes shoppers end up paying more for the extra ingredients and the must have sides like cranberry sauce. The butter, the mashed potatoes. You dont want it . Difficult. You can see larger crowds than normal outside of Walmart Stores on black friday. This Group Pushing for higher wages. They plan to protest at 1600 wall north Stores Nationwide on the day after thanksgiving. According to the walmarts, the average fulltime hourly wage at Walmart Stores is 12. 92. The federal minimum wage is 7. 25. And still to come they were following me, wanting to kill me. I didnt want to die. They fled violent gangs and death squads. We investigate the dire situation, forcing some children to travel alone to the bay area. And park rangers using technology the keep bears safe in yosemite. Well explain how, after this. There is no easy way out, and that is especially true for the children. Their situation so dire in their homeland that they flee to america without their parents. Many of them end up right here in the bay area. And tonight we hear now from the children. Now technically refugees. Investigative reporter Stephen Stock went undercover and continues our series of reports of real refugees living in the shadows among us. Reporter we spent two months traveling between the Mexican Border and the bay area, joining immigrants on buses headed for destinations all over the country. Including here. Along the way, we also discovered something we did not expect to find, something about many of these refugees that startled even us. The large numbers may have dwindled in the last few months, but the lines of refugees making their way to local bus stations have not stopped here in tucson, arizona. We watched as day after day, mothers and infants, fathers and Young Children were dropped off at the local bus station. They all were fleeing violent gangs and death squads in guatemala, el salvador and honduras. Then we rode with some of them across hundreds of miles of desert as they traveled to meet relatives and friends already living here throughout the united states. Traveling to far off places like atlanta, new jersey, los angeles, and eureka in Northern California. Along the way, we discovered an unexpected group of refugees. Translator yes, im scared. Reporter among them, this refugee from guatemala who fears for his life even now. Thats why we wont show you his face. And we will call him jaime. Translator i got out of guatemala because of problems with the gangs. They were following me, wanting to kill me. I didnt want to die. I wanted to save my life. Reporter the gangs in guatemala came for jaime when he was 12. Shortly after that, he fled for his life. Leaving his mother, his home, his country. Translator if i return to guatemala for sure death will be waiting for me. Reporter jaime is now in school and in hiding. Hiding in plain sight among us here in the bay area. Except for a distant relative whom he barely knows, he is alone. Jaime is 14. Was it worth it to come here . Translator if i didnt have this now, id be dead today. Translator i couldnt be there anymore. So i came alone. Reporter this girl, whom we will call dariana fled honduras after gangs told her that she must become a prostitute and work for them. Translator they are some that just look at little girl, spying on them so that they can kidnap them and rape them. Thats what they do over there. They sequester them and rape them. They prostitute them out, and if not, they just kill them. Their bodies appear everywhere, in river, anywhere. Reporter dariana was 13. Translator i feel so bad. I was alone and had no one until i got to the detention center. I didnt get to talk to my mother. I didnt know how she was. Reporter these children are not alone. According to the u. S. Border patrol, almost 52,000 unaccompanied children from guatemala, honduras, and el salvador have been picked up along the u. S. Mexican border through september 30th of this year. That does not count children coming here with parents. Its just children traveling alone. A number that has more than doubled, up 149 from last year. There is a deportation proceeding that is commenced against illegal migrants, including children. Reporter earlier this year on meet the press, Homeland Security secretary jeh johnson, while insisting federal law would be followed, also admitted these refugee children pose a unique challenge to immigration policy in its current form. We are looking at ways to create additional options for dealing with the children in particular consistent with our laws and our values. Translator at least two a day. Reporter two walkin refugees each day who come here to the east bay sanctuary in berkeley, where sister Maureen Dugan serves as a directory. Many of the children know their parents are here somewhere hand theyre looking for them. Reporter supported by several local protestant and catholic churches, they have given legal help to at least 65 unaccompanied minors just since june. Its a crisis for them. Because if they dont have representation, legal representation, theyll probably be deported. The idea of welcoming refugees, welcoming stranger, thats part of who we are. Reporter reverend ben daniel is pastor at Montclair Presbyterian Church in oakland, one of the local churches that supports east bay sanctuary. I get frustrated when i hear people suggesting that children risking their lives to come here, 12 years old, 8 years old, whatever, these people, to say that these people are some sort of existential threat to the united states, that frustrates me. Translator they said if you join us, well be friendly and things will be like we have said. Reporter this girl was 17 when she fled her home in guatemala after gangs told her to join them or die. Translator but if not, they told us they would kill us. Thats why we came here. To save our lives. Reporter jaime is now in high school, trying to learn english, and hoping he can stay. He worries that gang members from guatemala will catch up with him even here. Dariana made her way to the bay area where she was finally reunited with her mother and father who were already here. They worry about the familys matriarch, who still lives in honduras, and they say surely will be killed if gangs find out that they talked to us. The plight of all these children has ignited a National Movement among some churches, a movement started here in the east bay. Coming up later this month, we will take you inside that movement and how it is spreading beyond the bay area to the entire country as we continue to examine this immigration crisis. Im Stephen Stock, nbc bay area news. Very interesting story. If you do have a tip for Stephen Stock or anyone else in our Investigative Unit, do give us a call. The number is 1888996tips. Might be waking up to some 30s for the morning. But the afternoon, looking pretty good. Mid to upper 60s around san jose. Mid 60s for San Francisco as well. Chilly in parts of the north bay as we head into tonight. But tomorrow well see highs near 65 in santa rosa and upper 60s to near 70 possible around the trivalley for tuesday as that high strengthens for about 36 hours. But it will begin to break down as you get into tuesday night and wednesday, allowing the moisture to finally move towards the bay area. So as the high gets out of here, well see at least three systems will be tracking as we go through the week late tuesday into wednesday. Another one for thursday into early friday. And one more as we head into next weekend. So the first system, the wednesday system, has the tough work to do. Its going to have to try to break down the ridge and move it off to the east and overcome dryer air trapped around the bay area. Well likely see the higher rain totals north. Thats not the only system. Well get another one for thursday into friday. And then well see one more coming in for next weekend. So for the north bay, youll have the best opportunity for some rainfall starting as early as tuesday afternoon from livermore in the east bay. More likely for tuesday night into early wednesday and a few more showers for your thursday. But for now it appear as things stand, the south bay mainly into wednesday. And likely youll have to wait for saturday to get more rainfall. You can see San Francisco, the same as santa rosa for areas. North of the golden gate tuesday, wednesday into thursday, there is the chance of seeing rain for San Francisco. Next weekend, plan on a little bit of rain for your saturday. Skies clear again for the second half of the weekend. And yes, more rain coming in as we head towards the next monday and tuesday. For now chilly for the mornings.
