Cant believe the incidents happened so close to home. Theyve been there for more than a day as far as we can determine. Police had to wear protect i have masks over their faces before they entered a room on north 1st street. A housekeeper discovered the decomposing bodies of two women in the bed of room 289. We did have the fire crews to come out to check the air in the room to make sure there was no chemicals used. They determined safer entry. The women checked in on monday, housekeepers noticed the do not disturb signed had been hanging for several days before calling police. Investigators arent even sure what they have on their hands. Still, customers at the motel which offers both long and shortterm stays are concerned even though police have been called here on numerous occasions. Theres probably something going on that we might not know about because theres not enough information being passed along to the families out here. Police assured folks, there wasnt a dangerous suspect on the loose. There doesnt appear to be anything to indicate one way or the other what the cause of death was and were trying to determine that right now. Residents are still reeling from saturdays fatal stabbing. The young mans mother was also injured in a knife attack. They moved to the area only recently. Something i didnt imagine could go that far. Even though a domestic dispute, neighbors cant get over how it can happen in this quiet culdesac. Its been so quiet, Something Like this is completely out of the norm, actually. I wouldnt have imagined. Police have yet to release the names of anybody who died over this weekend in those incidents. The women at the motel have not been reported missing, and the suspect in the stabbing still remains behind bars. Live in san jose, nbc bay area news. And new at 11 00, fire crews forced to let a building burn to the ground tonight because of the water shortage in the bay area. The fire started at an abandoned building just after 7 00. Fire Officials Say they initially tried to put the fire out. Decided to take a defensive stance and let it burn rather than use water from our dwindling supply. They say the twostory building was an old structure used for Fire Department training. But Homeless People often live there. The cause of that fire under investigation. Tomorrow, the city of han sew say starts a new campaign to clean up part of the homeless camp called the jungle. Theyll clean up the eastern bank of the coyote creek. Today, protesters are upset with plans for a new fence that would be installed soon. Protesters say it would keep them from helping out the homeless. This is backhanded way of accomplishing the same thing. Those people have no way to have access to this area and cannot see the people down below. At the same time, the people down below wont be able to come up and get fed. Theyre forced to go elsewhere. City officials responded today saying they will continue to provide access to all organizations who are working with the citys homelessness response team. Three south bay firefighters were hurt, now others in the front lines of a Northern California wildfire may be in danger as more lightning is expected. New video tonight of the flames nearly 9,000 acres have burned in mendocino county. Eight firefighters hurt on friday when the flames suddenly shifted. The three from the south bay were released from the hospital yesterday. Right now, the fire only 35 contained. Firefighters are up against rugged terrain with difficult access. Six communities have been evacuated. And were also tracking a chance of thunderstorms here in the bay area over the next few days. Take a live look outside. Yeah, in fact, we saw some storms across the sierra. A lot of the activity is fires still burning across the state. And youll notice where we had activity today where we have some wildfire still burning. Numerous Lightning Strikes up to about 150. And yesterday, more than that. Tomorrow, were expecting a few to actually get into the bay area. You can see across the sierra, a lot of that activity is starting to die down. Of course, with the loss of the heat of the daytime, thats whats going to happen tomorrow again. While were dry right now once we get into the afternoon hours, well see the fuel for the thunderstorms build, and after 5 00, 6 00 in the evening, well have a chance for a shower. Couple here offshore, and the same tomorrow, the systems not going anywhere. Its going to continue to linger, at least until Tuesday Morning. Our best chance of seeing lightning in the bay area will be monday night and Tuesday Morning. We could see an isolated thunderstorm, but the best chance, i think, will be dry lightning. Dont have a whole lot of moisture to work with. The risk here is if we do get one Lightning Strike, that could mean another wildfire. And of course, you never know how many acres that could burn. This couple on vacation read about it and came to watch sparkle on the water. And then you see the moon. Theres a picture. According to some estimates, the moon will appear 14 bigger and about 30 brighter than when its at the brightest point. Earlier near twin peaks, the crowd gathered to watch a slightly different view, the moon ducking in and out of the clouds. Looks like double size almost. But looks a lot yellower. A lot yellower. Yeah, okay. And you can see the craters. Well, looks like the money and looks big. Some astronomers believe its hard to actually see a difference with just the naked eye during these super moon events where the moon tracks closest to the earth. Officers arrested the 62yearold in los angeles last week for sneaking on to a Southwest Airlines flight coming out of san jose. She was arrested again days later when she returned to l. A. X. We have seen showers and thunderstorms at least across the sierra today. Here at home, we havent seen any rain, nonetheless any Lightning Strikes. We did see cloud cover roll overhead, and a good sign the system is still developing, still spinning off the coast. And you can see the spin, the center of it. Lightning strikes associated with that. This thing is starting to move a little back towards the west. And thats why we have that increased threat for showers and thunderstorms tomorrow because all that activity that was across the sierra. Today, well, thats going to move along to the west with this system. So the threat for showers and thunderstorms is in the forecast tomorrow. But most likely after about 5 00. So most of the day will be dry. And i dont think were actually going to get any rain out of this. Couple of Lightning Strikes most likely across the bay. Palo alto, 78, San Francisco, youre going to be cool tomorrow, kind of like today, back into the mid60s. Sa sa salsilito, 65 tomorrow, a better chance of Lightning Strike in the evening hours. 80 for napa, youll see plenty of sunshine during the day, hard to think were talking about lightning when youre going to be looking at full sunshine all day long. We investigate a business practice that helps Corporate Giants sometimes avoid liabilities. You see them all over the road. Not all those trucks and drivers belong to fedex. Investigative reporter found that the Corporate Giant regularly uses a system that brings in for profits other drivers. Sometimes, though, that can come at a cost to safety. It begins here, a Federal ExpressDistribution Center in sacramento, a major hub in california, hundreds of trucks in and out every day. Some with the recognizable purple and green trademark logo plastered on the side. Others with names youve never heard of. It was a thirdparty contractor which is a subsidiary of fedex ground transporting only fedex goods. Thats what the driver was doing on august 8th, 2011. After picking up packages from the Distribution Center just outside of sacramento, he failed to stop his 25,000pound box truck for stalled traffic along interstate 5. He crashed into Donald Taylors parents car at around 70 miles an hour. Their bodies were burned beyond recognition. The High School Sweethearts were killed instantly before the vehicle burst into flames. The actions also killed a toddler, injured seven others and totaled six cars. The truck driver survived. According to this accident report, he had no valid license let alone a commercial license to deliver fedex packages and he was doing business without a valid operating authority. Just a multitude of violations, things that should have been red flagged by the department of transportation. Found guilty of misdemeanor manslaughter and other charges, he was sentenced to 14 years in prison. But because quinteros was considered an independent contractor, the corporation was not held responsible. Federal express did not want to discuss the situation, didnt want to talk about it. We reached out to fedex to respond to the accident. We were told that a freight forwarder, fedex smart post contracts with Third Party Vendors for Transportation Services who agreed to maintain their own d. O. T. Operating authority and, as a result, are responsible for any claims related to their operations. Meaning, fedex had nothing to do with the accident. They told us, not our problem, go away. Fedex says it makes sure the Third Party Contractors are operating legally. It uses a vendor to monitor the transportation website for operating authority and safety compliance. They did not have the operating authority. And they also had safety violations against them before that deadly crash in 2011. Even so, drivers continued transporting fedex goods. What has to happen is strengthening of good strong rules, effective enforcement, accountability by the companies that are operating the equipment and contracting for the services of these companies. The departing head of the safety administration. While some companies dodge federal oversight, the penalties are stiff when Safety Standards are poor. The highest penalty, we shut them down. They save a lot of money. Back at the Distribution Center, we spoke to this contracted driver who talked about transporting fedex goods. We looked up the department of transportation number on the side of the companys truck and discovered they have no insurance. And in may, the government revoked their operating license. Fedex told the Investigative Unit they stopped using that Third Party Contractor in june after finding out it lost its operating authority. But over several days in july, we saw them transporting fedex goods in and out. You think its safe . Yeah. Anger, just flat out pissed off. Its a Business Model that Donald Taylor says allows fedex to distance themselves when things go wrong. His route is only a fedex route. He does not do anything outside of Federal Express. Therefore, they have and should have immediate control. Now Donald Taylor decided not to sue fedex because his attorney advised him that California Law allows companies to hire Third Party Contractors. Now no longer in business. Three drivers pulled over after hitting the victim. Authorities say the driver, they believe, hit the victim first, has not come forward. Authorities have identified the person who died in a freak accident near petaluma on friday. Chp says 32yearold dwayne usher of vallejo was killed when a pizza oven came unhooked, crossed into oncoming traffic carrying usher and his family. The 4yearold and 8yearold sons were treated for minor injuries. Investigators impounded the oven to determine if it was being properly towed. Two People Killed in a shooting that ended in a crash in San Franciscos day view district tonight. Happened around 5 00. Both victims were rushed to the hospital where they were pronounced dead. Police say a preliminary investigation shows that the victims were riding on motorcycles and encountered gunfire. Then they tried to flee the area and crashed. Anthony here talking about your forecast, which includes, maybe a little bit of rain. Yeah. Maybe some sprinkles, light showers. At this point, we get really excited for a few drops of rain. You know, the big thing we are going to be tracking is the lightning over the next 24 to 36 hours. Youll notice the spin, ive super imposed the water vapor imagery and you can see the moisture in the atmosphere riding right along the center right there across the coast of california. Weve been seeing Lightning Strikes across the sierra and the coast this evening. So tomorrow, that lightning isnt forecast. Most likely in the evening hours for us. Notice right now, no rain in sight for us here in the bay area, but earlier in san jose, we had reports of some drizzle. But the lightning, again, is going to be the main focal point, thats going to be centered across the north bay and also across the trivalley. I think thats going to be the better chance of those locations seeing the lightning. Be elsewhere, i dont think were going to see that. Mix of sun and clouds for tomorrow, 70s and 80s for most of the inland valleys, mid60s for San Francisco. Kind of like where we were for today. San jose, 81 degrees for your microclimate forecast. Foster city at 75 for tomorrow, and San Francisco, very similar to like we saw today, mid60s, over toward the inner sunset with a mix of sun and clouds. Well wake up to morning fog. Up to 80s in napa tomorrow, and i think the north bay and trivalley, well see the better chance of maybe see a Lightning Strike. And again, its going to come in the evening hours. Well see plenty of sunshine throughout the day. Be by 5 00, 6 00, well see a chance for the thunderstorm activity to increase. But for us, i dont think were going to get any rainfall. I think the best chance for rain will be across the central valley. We could see one or two of the rogue storms drift this way and that could spark off new wildfires. We have four raging across the state. So any Lightning Strike, even if its just one is really very scary news. Just because, this is the driest weve been ever since records have been kept in california. So were going to continue to monitor. Hopefully well get out of the woods. But again, the next 24 to 36 hours, keep an eye to the sky. The only thing were watching is lightning. And the super moon . And the moon. We think its cool.
