and a severe thunderstorm threat on the east coast. al roker is here. the. the new video of an american stranded by sickness more than 3,000 feet underground in a cave in turkey. the urgent rescue mission. the star of "that 70s show" danny masterson sentenced to 30 years to life for the rapes of two women. our team at the courthouse. former white house adviser peter navarro found guilty of contempt of congress for ignoring subpoenas from the january 6th committee. his defiant words outside court. our nbc news exclusive with secretary of state tony blinken in ukraine. what he says about ukraine's counteroffensive after months of slow gains. and it's football night in america. the new nfl season kicking off tonight right here on nbc. >> announcer: this is "nbc nightly news" with lester holt. >> good evening, everyone, and welcome. the nerves and anticipation associated with the first day of school are taking on a new dimension in classrooms across america tonight amid a growing number of arriving migrant families seeking asylum here, and presenting school systems with unique challenges to teaching and learning. new york city today with its 900,000 student enrollment welcoming an additional 21,000 migrant children into classrooms as its school year got under way. new york one of many cities struggling to house and resettle an influx of asylum seekers, at times pleading for more federal help. now as new york works to absorb and edge skylight many new students at once, its mayor, eric adams declaring yesterday the migrant issue will destroy new york city. rehema ellis covers education for us and has more. >> reporter: on opening day, kids rushing in to the largest school system in the country, and it just got even bigger with 21,000 new children of asylum seekers also starting classes today in new york. mayor eric adams is frustrated with the steady wave of migrants. he says the city is overwhelmed with 10,000 arriving a month, straining city services and creating a desperate need for help from washington. >> i don't see an ending to this. this issue will destroy new york city, destroy new york city. >> reporter: the school space, the growing task of providing academic resources, supplies, a more diverse staff. many do not have bilateral programs. >> last year i went from 20 kids to almost 30 kids in a classroom. >> it's going make it tough. somebody's got to solve these problems. >> we should be welcoming of people coming here. and everyone in america is entitled to education. >> reporter: the school chancellor says the city is allocating an additional $110 million to accommodate the school's growing migrant population. >> we welcomed them with open arms. and that's what we have been doing here. >> reporter: the teachers union president says last year, the school successfully accepted 18,000 asylum seeking students. >> was it easy? no. absolutely not. but did those children learn? yes. are they in a better place today because they were in our school system? yes. >> reporter: antoine arrived last year. he still has scars from crossing the jungle, but says he loves school. despite all the challenges, some parents are ready to see what the school year brings. >> we did it last year, and i think they'll be able to do it this year. >> and rehema joining us now. rehema, this isn't the only challenge schools are facing. >> indeed, lester, the city is also facing a potential school bus driver strike, and there is also a heat advisory, forcing all schools to limit outdoor activities. lester? >> reheem marks thanks very much. and yes, extreme late summer heat just one of the weather channels we're following as hurricane lee strengthens rapidly to a category 4. al roker is tracking it all. where do you start? >> well, i'd start with the heat, lester. that's what we got immediately. we're talking 68 million people from the northeast into the southwest dealing with a heat advisory, heat watches. we will see some relief as the front moves through. finishes in the low 80s. nice and cool in the 70s and the midwest. but unfortunately stubborn heat from pensacola all the way to the southwest with upper 90s and triple-digits. with that system pushing in, it's a slow-moving front. it will bring 40 million people under the gun for some wind gusts, damaging hail. but thankfully, a low tornado risk. and now to lee, a category 4 storm, a monster. 130-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving northwest at 15 miles per hour. rapid intensification. it's 35 miles per hour in 24 hours. this increased 50 miles per hour in 12, in half the time. the national hurricane center path brings it as a category 4 storm west of the bahamas. but look at -- this is what we want to look at. this is out seven to ten days. we're talking about the european model. some of the outer bands could bring it to new york. we're not saying that's going to happen, but we have to watch this, because it really is going to be unpredictable until probably early next weekend. >> getting a lot of people's attention. all right, al, thanks very much. we will turn now to the urgent rescue mission being watched around the world. an american scientist stranded more than 3,000 feet down in a cave in turkey. matt bradley now with the race to rescue him. >> reporter: the dramatic first video of american scientist mark dickey, days after a life-threatening medical emergency trapped him 3400 feet under ground in turkey. >> i'm doing well, thank you. >> reporter: visibly tired but in good spirits, surrounded by the international rescue team that gave him life-saving medical care. >> as you can see, i'm up, i'm alert, i'm talking, but i'm not healed on the inside yet. i need a lot of help to get out of here. >> reporter: the 40-year-old veteran cave diver experienced severe gastrointestinal bleeding on saturday while working on a caving expedition in southern turkey. the medical emergency leaving him unable to eat and partially unconscious for three days, until two doctors delivered units of blood and administered transfusions according to the italian cave and alpine service, reaching depths over 4,000 feet, it's turkey's third deepest, a labyrinth of passes and water quill philled kavsh. a friend of dickey's says it makes the cave one of the world's toughest to traverse. >> it's at the top of the game for difficult cave systems. i don't expect mark on the surface for four to eight days. >> reporter: his rescuers now facing a monumental journey back to the surface. >> we take care of our own. and it's really special to be taken care of. >> reporter: and lester, how long this takes will depend whether dickey is able to walk himself out of that cave. if he needs to be carried out on a stretcher, it could make the operation a whole lot more dangerous and take a lot longer. >> matt bradley in turkey, thank you. a judge in los angeles sentenced actor danny masterson to 30 years to life in prison after the star of "that 70s show" was convicted of raping two women decades ago. dana griffin is following this. dana, the judge not mincing words. >> yeah, good evening, lester. while handing down that sentence, 30 years to life, the judge admonished masterson saying, quote, mr. masterson, you are not the victim here. the two women he is convicted of raping gave emotional statements about how the assaults have impacted their lives. despite it being more than 20 years since these crimes occurred, the prosecutor noted that while these types of cases are hard to prove, he is happy the victims got their justice. the once popular sitcom star who has repeatedly denied the rape allegations showed no visible emotion after the sentence was read. masters' attorney says the jury got it wrong and is confident his convictions will be overturned. lester? >> all right, dana, thank you. in washington, a federal jury just found former trump white house adviser peter navarro guilty of contempt of congress for defying a subpoena from the january 6th committee. garrett haake joins us now. garrett, the jury reacted very quickly. >> yeah, lester, it took the d.c. jury just four hours to find former trump trade adviser peter navarro guilty on two misdemeanor counts of contempt of congress. the charges stem from navarro's refusal to provide documents or testimony to the january 6th committee about his role in the former president's attempts to overturn the election results. navarro had argued that as a senior presidential adviser, he was covered by executive privilege, and that he couldn't be compelled to testify. trump adviser steve bannon made a similar argument at his contempt trial last year. he too was found guilty. outside court after the verdict, navarro was defiant, calling it a sad day for america and vowing to appeal all the way to the supreme court if necessary. he is now facing a january sentencing and up to a year in jail and a $100,000 fine on each count. lester? >> garrett haake, thank you. there is growing political firestorm over the possibility of indictment of the president's son hunter biden by a special counsel, all as republicans are vowing to intensify their own investigations. ryan nobles now with the latest. >> reporter: tonight, as president biden heads overseas, his son's legal problems are growing. though many republicans say they're not satisfied that special counsel david weiss announced he'll seek to indict hunter biden by the end of the month. >> yeah, that's on the gun charge in delaware it looks like. so big deal. >> reporter: the gop has slammed weiss for negotiating what they call a sweetheart plea deal that would have allowed the president's son to avoid prison time that deal fell apart under a judge's scrutiny. >> the biden administration wants to give hunter biden the slap on the wrist and have him be the scapegoat and the objective of the biden department of justice is to protect joe biden. >> reporter: but hunter biden's attorney firing back at the possibility of indictment. >> what's changed? not the facts. not the law. but we have seen over the last six weeks the politics have certainly influenced the outcome. >> reporter: meanwhile, republicans on capitol hill today deposing an fbi agent involved in the original investigation. many house republicans arguing hunter biden's foreign business dealings are tied to his father, pointing to testimony from hunter's business partner that the president joined 20 calls with their foreign business associates over a ten-year period. >> we're going to follow the facts of the evidence. and if it warrants going to an impeachment inquiry, we're going to do that. >> reporter: but some republicans argue the evidence against the president is not there. >> but to be clear, sir, at this point you don't think that evidence has been presented? you're still waiting the see that evidence? >> i do not think that evidence has been presented, and i don't think there is a need to have an impeachment inquiry. >> reporter: and the president has consistency head he played no role in his son's business work. meanwhile, on capitol hill house republicans holding out the option to call the special counsel to testify. lester? >> ryan nobles, thank you. a possible new sighting today of that convicted killer still on the run after escaping from a pennsylvania prison one week ago. police expanding the search area. george solis is there with late details. >> reporter: tonight, from the air to the ground, and even across rail yards, the search for danelo cavalcante is now in its eighth day. >> he has already murdered two people, one in brazil and one here in a very brutal manner. he is a very dangerous individual. >> reporter: the manhunt began when cavalcante escaped the chester county prison 30 miles from philadelphia last thursday morning, crab walking up the wall in a corridor off the prison's exercise yard. multiple sightings of the fugitive inside a two-mile radius from the prison helped to establish an initial from time to timer where police tried to contain him, but failed. an image of cavalcante released by police was next captured on a trail camera several miles from the prison at longwood gardens. authorities say he was seen tuesday night approximately four miles away from there by a homeowner who saw the escaped inmate in a creek bed and possibly again today back near the gardens where the search is now focused. >> he is a monster. when he is with my sister, no human, no. it's crazy. >> reporter: sarah brandaeu is the sister of the woman he was convicted of killing, stabbing her 38 times. is your family afraid, knowing he is out on the loose? >> yes. my family is all scary. i don't sleep no more. >> reporter: police say cavalcante is now within approximately eight to ten-square mile radius. >> i have every reason to believe he is still within that perimeter. >> reporter: experts say police will slowly push in on that perimeter, trying to get cavalcante out to a space where he can be taken into custody. lester? >> it's step by step. we do. we're with them. we'll remain with them. and not just us. again, many other countries around the world. >> reporter: will remain with them. but opinion poll suggests americans might not be in this for the long haul. so are you making false promises saying yes, we're with you, the american people are with you for the long haul when they might not be? >> so, first, i believe part of my responsibility, part of my job, and this is true for the president and many others in the administration is of course to talk to our own people, to continuously try to make clear what's at stake if we allow this aggression by russia to go uncontested. if we allow it to go forward with impunity, then you open pandora's box and it's a recipe for disaster around the world. would-be aggressors say russia can do it, i can do it. that's not a world americans want to live in. >> blinken's visit came amid more deadly strikes. at least 17 ukrainians were killed wednesday in this market. and now there are fears russia, which like ukraine, is running low on weapons and ammunition, could get more from a new source. >> all indications are that president putin and kim jong-un are going to meet next week. do you know when? >> dent know when, but we've seen that. and i think that speaks volumes. it speaks volumes about the desperation that russia has, if it's going around the world trying to find support and weapons from north korea. >> reporter: desperate, but it could work. do you think it could have an impact, tip the balance? >> we've been very concerned about the fact that russia has already been getting weaponry, particularly drones from iran. we're certainly concerned a the prospect of it getting more from north korea. so we will look at every possible means we have to prevent that, to disrupt that, working with other countries. >> reporter: and secretary blinken told us that peace negotiations don't look promising, that russian president putin does not seem interested in diplomacy. lester?
