Paul chambers live in richmond where youve learned what officererize doing to get guns off the streets. Officers say they can get as many as 400 firearms off the streets in richmond. They believe the more off the street, the safer the community. Reporter for eight years now Sergeant Eric smith worked in the homicide unit. He said in 90 of the crimes, a firearm is used. Having these guns recovered definitely makes me feel better and we know theyre not going to be used in another crime. Reporter inside 2,000 firearms are stored, down from 5,000 just seven years ago. This wall filled with bins all containing guns. The other wall, dozens of boxes with rifles inside. Officers say all the firearms were used in crimes still under investigation, some dating back to crimes committed in the 60s. Our office often encounters people who have guns. Guns are used in a lot of crimes here in richmond. Once Richmond Police confiscate the guns, it stays in one of these bins until its clear. From there it ends up right here. The weapons in the yellow bin will be melted. Police destroy anywhere from 500 to 800 firearms each year. As officers work to make the community safer, removing the firearms from the streets seems to be lowering the number of gunrelated crimes. In 2011, 26 people were killed in richmond. That number dropped to 18 in 2012, 16 last year. Theres been a decrease in Violent Crimes citywide which is a good thing. Gun violence is down as well. One gun crime is too many.
