Grocery store operator revenues topped expectations, reduced its forecast for the year. And revealed plans to exit all dominicks stores in chicago by next year. Scott shellady of trean is here to talk about the big rally. What a great trading opportunity that was. But was the rally premature . I dont think so. I think that with the rhetoric we saw yesterday we just went back to where we were befor all this garbage in washington started to happen. I think the equity market was one that took the negative washington sentiment the most. You didnt see that move in the 10 year as much. Yesterday, the 10 year really didnt move at all and the equities did. So the equities are back to where we started and the 10 years are telling you we still have all these problems to deal with with all the same people to deal with. Traders have some major earnings to watch for today including jp morgan and wells fargo. What do you see in the charts for those stocks . What do you want to hear from those companies . Yesterday they did well and i think that to continue to do so were gonna need to see some good earnings growth. Weve been accomodating this economy with all this money, trying to borrow some growth forward. So if that needs to happen and it needs to happen in the financial sector. So those stocks are gonna need to lead the way for us to hold onto what we did yesterday. Are you a buyer of the banks . Im a buyer of the banks because i think that Going Forward thats gonna be one sector that can really withstand anything we see going as far as a downward flow. But i think ultimately we need to see growth everywhere for the banks to do well but they should lead the way. Sounds like wise words. Thank you scott. Investors are watching every word out of washington. Yesterday comments ranged from flirting with a debt default disaster to a possible temporary solution. The market took off thursday as investors and traders stepped in to buy stocks as glimmers of hope begain to surface that a gop plan was in the works. Surrounded by Republican Leaders speaker of the house john boehner presented a what he called an offer that would give the president the ability to move forward. A temporary increase in the debt ceiling in agreement to go to conference on the budget for his willingness to sit down and discuss with us a way forward to reopen the government and to start to deal with americas pressing problems. Those words triggered one of the biggest rallys of the year with the dow up more than 300 points. Also from washington, secretary jack lew warned a Senate Committe against making an 11th decision on the debt ceiling, by reminding them what happend the last minute decison in 2011. We had the damage, we had the drop in the market, we had the higher Interest Rate cost. We also saw for the first time the downgrade in the u. S. Credit rating. Thats what happens when we didnt cross the line. I dont think anyone wants to see what happens when we cross the line. In our cover story, bond dealers meeting in chicago, this week have a lot on their plate. Not only are they calculating the potential effects of the moving target known as the debt ceiling debate, they are also waging a longerterm battle to keep Municipal Bonds from being taxed. The bond dealers of america, a trade association that also lobbys lawmakers in washington had a lot to talk about at its annual conference. First, reaction to the Government Shutdown. Across the board, its been a disruption. Theres uncertainty bleeding into the market. Investment strategists say the Government Shutdown has reduced the chance that the Federal Reserve will scale back its bondbuying program. Given the evidence, i think were talking about sometime next year. As for the raising the debt ceiling, even before thursdays proposal by House Republicans to extend the debt ceiling for six weeks, there was the sense that it would be resolved. The market is not building in a default scenario, which is positive. The market thinks washington is going to get its act together, in some capacity. Another issue facing dealers of muncipal bonds, local and regional governments use these to raise money on infrastructure projects, but as a part of tax reform, theres a proposal to change the tax exempt status of investment in Municipal Bonds. But though bond dealers say theyve got the support of 138 members of congress. Debate on the floor is still a long way off. Given the time frame, its hard to see this being discussed in this environment. We cant even talk about a budget, how are we going to get to tax reform . Taxing Municipal Bond investment, though on the table is still a long way off. Some think tax reform wont be brought up until after next years electionwhich means 2015 at the earliest. Hopeful homebuyers are waiting out the Government Shutdown. The mortage application process is at a standstill, as Government Agencies are closed, or working with fewer staff members. Lenders are also playing a waiting game. The ir s needs to reopen before lenders can confirm the income of interested buyers. Jed kolko of trulia says the impacts of the shutdown are nothing compared to the fallout from hitting the debt ceiling. I think the effects of the shutdown on the Housing Market are much smaller than the worst case scenario, if we hit the debt ceiling, and default. Thats really the horrific scenario, because we could see Mortgage Rates rise significantly, we could also see a bigger slowdown in economic activity. Mortgage rates did rise slightly this week. The average 30 year ticked up to 4. 23 , the 15 year up slighty at 3. 31 Healthcare Professionals are helping consumers separate fact from fiction when it comes to the Affordable Care act. I served in the United States air force. I served a total of 16 years. I was deployed 13 times. On my second deployment four bombs hit my vehicle. And at 19 years old, that was the first time i ever saw somebody die. Coming back, i was raging. I started having pretty horrible nightmares. I would wake up in middle of the night sweats. I started drinking a lot. I felt worthless. I guess i never recognized it in myself. Eventually, one day i just walked into the va hospital and said id like to see somebody. Dont suffer alone. Joining us from the floor of cme group pro traders Alan Knuckman and andrew keene. Topic number one freaked out . The stock market is not showing signs of big panic because of the debt threat in washington when will it be time to be afraid, very afraid . Alan never. You always can control your risk. Thats the most important factor when the markets going up or down. But i think if you focus on Consumer Confidence or sentiment, youre going to be off base. Because it takes a while for it to get to a level where people are comfortable and thats usually when you see the market reverse a little bit anyways. Andrew yeah, i agree with alan. I dont think theres any fear out there. The chances of the u. S. Defaulting on some of their debt i think is about a 10 chance. So you can protect yourself by buying way out of the money puts in the spy or some vix calls to protect yoruself but i dont think anythings gonna happen. So when people are fearful, thats a good buying opportunity. Alan volatility is opportunity. Angie topic two fidelity fears the nations largest manager of mutual funds is selling its short term t bills. Whats next for rates . Andrew i think theyre stuck in a range right here. Maybe between 2 and 7. I do not think we push above that 3 . But i think to the downside, there is a cap. So i think were stuck in this range for a while. Alan i agree with you. You were just a kid, but i was here on the floor in 9596 when we had this last shutdown. And the treasuries rallied. There was a huge rushflight to safety. Were not seeing that at all. So, its better right now. Not how the market reacts but how its not reacting. I dont think Interest Rates are gonna go anywhere. Obviously, theyre gonna go up eventually. But thats gonna be as the economy gets better. Its not gonna take 20 years but its not gonna be next week or next month or next year. Andrew alan will be in a wheelchair. Angie topic 3 dollar daze as the new 100 bills roll out are you a seller or buyer of the u. S. Dollar . Alan im a seller of the dollar and thats another part of this bond quotient herethat youre not. You didnt see any flight to safety in the dollar index as you usually do in other crises. That did not happen. The dollar below 80 here target 77. That means the Euro Currency above 36 is going to 140. Youre gonna see a lot of safety unwinding. If people didnt buy into the dollar on this, theyre not gonna buy the dollar on anything. Andrew they actually did buy the dollar. If you look at the daily chart of the uup, which is the bull dollar etf. 2141. It made a nice tail on the bottomgot buyers down there. Its rallied about 1 alan this is not a move 1 is not a move. Andrew that is a move. Some people would love 1 in 2 weeks. So the dollars going higher, were not gonna default onwere not gonna get downgraded which should be strong for the dollar. I think the dollar heads higher until we eventually do taper. So in the short termbullish, long termbearish. Alan huge surge in the marketthe dollars doing nothing. Angie on to our bonus round Government Shutdown which are still up and running. A house gym swimming pool, sauna steam room. B a 30 second subway ride so lawmakers dont have to walk outside c paychecks for the president and congress dall of the above alan its d. All of the above. Andrew d. Angie good job. First th a deadly disease. I was one of them. Im a nurse and i knew how damaging the disease was to my life. Nothing i tried seemed to work. Together we can make a choice to end obesity now. A Public Service from the Obesity Action Coalition. Has netflix in focus. And is the run done in this stock . I think the highs we saw at the beginning of this week. Will probably be the higs for a while. Momentum certainly has waned. The big selloff we saw on wednesday, some retracements certainly yesterday. I think given the fact that the margin hikes came out and some of that free money euphoria has waned here. I dont look for netflix to collapse like perhaps, tesla. But i look for the stock to kind of chop around here and have a lot of trouble heading higher. And what do you see in the charts for the overall market . Give us something so we can sleep at night. Same kind of price action in the overall market. I think the high is right around 1710 on the s p 500. Will probably be the highs for a while and i think the lows we saw on tuesday down around that 16351640 level may be the lows for a while. I think well have what i call big range no change so up 150down 150. But week to week kind of going nowhere. What else is your trader instinct telling you . Do you think that we will see the debt ceiling raised . Absolutely. I think they wont be monkeying around with that. Ultimately remember even when that will probably come to pass. Stocks are not an expensive here. They are trading about 16 times next years earnings. And those earnings estimates are getting trimmed in so i just look for a lot of trouble Going Forward and janet yellen will provide a little more of that bernanke put. But valuation is getting shred sothe yin and yang battleground here for probably the next six months or so. Have a good weekend tim. Thank you angie.
