amateur video captures a deadly crash. a world war ii airplane nose dives into the crowd at a air show in reno. 52 injures late this afternoon at the popular reno air races. dozens of people witnessed the crash on the north side of the city. jana katsuyama live in our newsroom now and tells us the pilot knew he was in trouble >> reporter: that's right, this crash happened during the featured race of the day. it crashed at the tarmac right next to the front row box seats. it was the highlight of the championship races. and in one instant the excitement turned to horror. the pilot of the aircraft sent out a may day signal, and then. >> just twisted and turned and wham. it was all smoke, no fire. >> reporter: it turns out jimmy leeward knew he was in trouble and tried to move away from the stands. a move that saved lives. >> it looks like he was pulling as far on the stick to try to get away from the stands. >> reporter: smoking debris covered the ground. 56 total taken to local hospitals. the pilot and two spectators died. tonya of hayward recounted the scene by phone. >> there were bodies everywhere. people who looked like they had survived, they were missing limbs. it was absolute carnage. >> reporter: tonight we've learned that race officials have closed the airfield and the ntsb is investigating. all races scheduled for the weekend have been cancelled. at a news conference tonight. officials said 15 of the 56 engine spectators are now in critical condition. 14 are in serious condition with injuries that are life threatening. the others are have nonserious or not life threatening conditions. >> the great stories of the week is jimmie lee worth galloping course. he turned the course in the 1940s cleveland air racer in the fifth position. >> reporter: the website air show tv show featured the plane and it's now deceased pilot jimmy leeward. leeward said the plane was faster than anyone on the the field or even faster. leeward was 74 years old and was from ocala, florida. he was a well known stunt flier. he loved the p51 because it was a plane of legendary pilots such as chuck leward. officials in reno have set up a victim phone lime. that number is # 75-972-6663. the reno air races have a history of crashes. in fact, there was actually a nonfatal crash just yesterday. in 2007 and 2008 there were a total of four deaths. this was one of the crashes. the air race is similar to an car race and shows planes flying wing tip to wing tip at times going in speeds in excess of 500-miles-an-hour. the faa closely watches the pilots races. we spoke to a pilot who has been to the races before. >> it's a different type of flying. it's low to the ground, it's fast and you're with several other airplanes in kind of the same area. you have to be certified as a race pilot before you can race. >> reporter: the reno air races have been held since 1954. since that time seven people have died. today's crash is the first time spectators were hurt looking for a gunman wanted with connection to a shooting, carjacking. officers have surrounded an apartment building, lloyd lacuesta has the story. >> reporter: the s.w.a.t. team is still in there going door to door trying to see if they can find the suspect in this case. now you can see the extent of the search that's police lined up all the way in this neighborhood. that's a whole city block that's been sealed off. you can see some lights in some homes because apparently people who are still in their homes have been told not to come out and stay in there. there are some people in the sidewalk, sitting in chairs there are residents who can't get back inside. and they are waiting as police conduct this search of apartment complex you see behind me. police are looking for this man who's believed to have shot a customer in an attempted gas station robbery at 11:00 this morning in san jose's willow glen area. then an hour later this same man is believed to have ditched a car he escaped from at the gas station, then carjacked a 1997 lexus with a female driver still inside at the plaid shopping center about a mile away from the shop gas station. there was some kind of confrontation, shots were fired and the man fled into the apartment complex. >> i just heard like five or six shots. like gunshots. >> reporter: one neighbor says he saw a man hop a fence and police were after him. >> i looked at the guys, you know walking. not too much -- i don't know maybe the went inside. >> reporter: police say none of the officers were injured in the gunfire. they don't know the suspect was hit. >> if we are able to capture this individual in one piece. then we can debrief him, talk to him and he can shed some light on where the victim is. >> reporter: family and friends of cindy wynn of san jose say she is the woman who had her car taken from the shopping center and is still missing. >> she made her last call from here. you know to us asking for a jumper because her car was out of battery. called back five minutes and said that a hispanic person was going to help her jump the car. that's the last we heard of her. >> reporter: so for now the situation remains unresolve. the man who was shot at the gas station where it all began is in the hospital tonight. we're told he is expected to survive. but still the unanswered question is what happened to cindy wynn. the woman who had her car hijacked. she is still yet to be seen. live in san jose, lloyd lacuesta, ktvu channel 2 news. new numbers out today are not encouraging for people looking for work. california's jobless rate hit 12.1% in august that's up .1 of a percent from july. california's unemployment rate is now the second highest in the nation and well above the national average of 9.8%. almost 2.2 million people in california are currently jobless and competition for work is fierce. >> in the beginning it was a lot of younger people. young adults and things of that nature. now you have people that are from all ranges. from 16 up until they are senior citizens. managers at the spirit halloween store in alameda say they have 673 applications for only about 40 jobs all of which were only temporary jobs. northern california does have some bright spots, santa clara and san benito added 600 jobs. there's also word that home sales in santa clara and san mateo county climbed 12% in august compared to the year before. the bay area's unemployment rates are also better than the state average. new figures show santa clara counties unemployment rate fell to 9.9% in august. down from 10.3 in july. san mateo county jobless numbers fell from 8.3% from 8.8. solano county has the highest unemployment rate at 11.6%. california's republican party convention is getting underway tonight in los angeles with another primary on the horizon. ken pritchett is live from where representative michelle bachmann spoke. >> reporter: like the nationwide race, polling in california suggests that bachmann is falling far behind the other front runners in seeking the nomination. tonight there was no doubting michelle bachmann energized the convention. >> i believe that 2012 will be a wave election that goes all the way across the united states. it will even take in the golden state. >> reporter: it was largely a standard campaign speech for bachmann with a new line on the new low of president obama's rating. >> election day of 2012 will largely be the moment -- >> reporter: while bachmann may have been warmly received that's different than having the delegates support. according to a new field poll only 6% of california republicans prefer her as the presidential nominee. compare that to 28% for mitt romney and 20% for rick perry. that same field goal shows president obama would beat either of the front runners, still republicans see an opportunity. >> he doesn't have a program that helps california or the nation. i think he's going to lose next year. i think this race in california is going to be closer than people think. that will help our candidates up and down the state. part of the work at the state convention is gearing up for the convention race ahead. winning blue state california -- >> it's tough. it's so tough. maybe that's a tough one to call. >> reporter: the only other widely recognized name in the field here at the convention is congressman in iowa. he said the nation cannot afford four more years of high unemployment. secretary of state hillary clinton delivered a key speech in san francisco today. and coming up in about six minutes, making travel easier for tourists is bad business. the city of san bruno is getting ready to fill in the large open crater left by last year's explosion and fire. construction crews used heavy equipment today preparing the site to be filled. removing the physical scars is something some residents say should have been done a long time ago. >> the hole not being filled is just amazing to us. in a year it should have been done a long time ago. that street should have been opened a long time ago. city officials say ongoing investigations prevented them from filling in the hole because investigators needed to collect evidence. now the san bruno city manager says he has just received the okay to cover and cap that crater. the congressional committee investigating solyndra has summoned the company's ceo. internal white house e-mails released this week suggestions members of the obama administration knew the company was on shaky financial ground. patents should now be easier to get and use thanks to a bill signed by president obama. >> some where around here is the next thomas jefferson. >> reporter: right now there is a backlog of more than 1 million pal at the present times that are pending. it's hope this bill will streamline patent process and simplify expensive legal battles. the president says that the process will in turn create jobs. president obama signed a bill extending funds to the federal aviation administration. for the rest of the year avoiding a second shut down. late last night congress approved the funding after heated debate. the bill also extends highway funding to next spring. last month's shut down put thousands of faa and construction employees temporarily out of work. the closing numbers from wall street today, the markets ended a week of gains on a high note. the dow jones closed up almost 76 points at 11,509. the nasdaq finished the day 15 points closing at 2,622. it is the best week for the nasdaq in two years and the the financial center of the bay area but even san francisco's financial district is not immune to the phenomenon known as wage theft. >> we find it happens with white color office workers who don't get pay the way they should be. >> that includes minimum wage, overtime, paid breaks. sometimes people are asked to work off the clock. clock out and keep working. >> reporter: even stealing tips from workers. >> a report put out last year by the chinese progressive administration shows that half of all restaurant workers here in china town madeless than minimum wage. this morning mayor ed lee signed into law the wage theft prevention ordnance. >> there's already $7 billion of wage theft going on. we're not going to let that happen in san francisco. >> reporter: it gives investigators access to work sites, payroll records and workers at any time. strengthens the city's ability to cite employers immediately. and doubles penalties for workers who violate regulations. at cabbage grill an assistant manager welcomed the ordnance. >> they should get paid for what they work. let's face it. come on, i don't care. i don't think it's a good idea to be shorting employees from their hourly wage. >> reporter: activists said wage theft is a serious national problem. 2/3 of low wage workers report being a victim. the ordnance takes place next month. i'm john sasaki, ktvu news. a court ruling struck out down a law that prohibited day workers from soliciting work from passing drivers. the ruling from the federal ninth circuit court of appeals lifts the ban that was put in place by the city of redonde beach. similar bans all across the west will now have to go including about 50 ordnances in california. redondo beach may appeal the ruling to if u.s. supreme court. there is word tonight a former police officer the center of a corruption probe is back in jail after being arrested. contra costa sheriff deputies arrested louis lombardi on tuesday. the former police officer was charged with making threats. san francisco schools are now turns away students who haven't gotten their whooping cough shots. state law requires that middle and high school students be vaccinated against whooping cough within 30 days of the start of classes. the district said yesterday about 10% of san francisco students still haven't been vaccinated. students without the shots can attend very latest. >> reporter: julie you can imagine here it is understandably quiet. they have cleared everyone out of here. out of an area that would be very busy for these air races. we want to give you a sense of where we are. as we look down the aisle you might see some airplanes, in the distance you might be able to make out the grand stand. just a little beyond that is where this crash happened. as we mentioned we have new video that came into the ktvu newsroom a short time ago. the person who shot it clearly much closer to the crash than what we've seen in previous video from the day. as you can see all the debris in just how close this p51 came from crashing into the stands. as we heard earlier, the pilot did call for a may day and spectators say it appeared he tried turning to avoid barreling into the grand stand. however the plane went down on the tarmac near box seats that were filled with people. at a news conference about 2.5 hours ago, officials shed light on what happened. >> there appeared to be some kind of air flight problem with the aircraft that caused it to go out of control. and we all know what the end result was on that. >> from witnesses who also say that after -- >> reporter: organizers say the family of the pilot killed jim my leeward had actually asked for the air races to go on. but the board decided that it would be best to cancel the remaining races scheduled for this weekend. in fact, on our flight out here to reno tonight we actually spoke with passengers on our plane who expected to be going to these air races this weekend and had heard from friends obviously what had happened and that everything has been cancelled. we can also tell you a memorial is planned for tomorrow at the airfield, that's tomorrow afternoon. we understand at this point it is going to be a private memorial still a lot of information to gather about what happened. and the victims that need to be attended to here in reno tonight. of course we will bring you was shot and killed inside his home. investigators say he knew his killers and actually invited them to the apartment. 23-year-old kenneth franklin is under arrest now and is scheduled to be arranged on monday. but 18-year-old hassan mckauly is still at large. the justice department says 3.8 million violent crimes were reported in 2010. officials say they accounted an increase because of the weak economy and high unemployment. the bay area is going against that national trend. santa monica research group says homicides are up in at least three bay area cities. in oakland they are up 25%. san jose 73% and richmond 75%. crime in the bay area had been on a downward trend the last three years. fire officials tell us fireworks are to blame for a grass fire in benetia. it burned a thousand acres between community drive. the áf crews from benicia, vallejo and -- authorities tell us that they are still investigating and no arrests have been made. a va hospital is operating normal today after a shelter in place. the shelter in place warning has been lifted and a leak has been repaired. women who are taking birth control pills will want to hear this. 1.4million packages of birth control have been recalled leaving some women unprotected. >> obgyn dr. ray churn talks about birth control pills on a daily basis. but now that she scans their charts she will be looking for what particular type of birth control pill they take. >> i was very concerned about my patients because they could potentially get pregnant and not even be aware that they're taking their pills the way they're supposed to be, but it's not working for them. >> reporter: there's been a packaging error. which could lead to women taking the pills in the wrong order. the six pills that have been recalled are all generic. churn says so far the office has not received phone calls from patients asking about the recall but she thinks many don't know about it yet and some don't even know what type of pill they're taking. >> which one was i taking, i had to ask the doctor. am i taking any of the ones that were recalled. when she told me no i was thankful. >> reporter: women should stop taking their hospitals all across northern and central california are preparing for a nurses strike. why 23,000 nurses are walking off the job for how long, and what hospitals are doing to stay open. and in 10 minutes we're going to look directly at your bay area weekend. one of those days is going to be hotter than the other. we'll talk ab thousands of northern california news are getting ready to walk off the job for a one day strike. up to 33,000 registered nurses plan to strike next thursday at hospitals throughout northern and central california. the hospital says they plan to bring in replacements in order to stay open. the strike comes after proposed cut backs in employee benefit and patient services. all together 34 hospitals across the region are expected to be affected by next week's strike. they include sutter health system, kaiser, children's hospital and alta bates hospital. a computer server was breeched last month as part of an effort by hackers to overload the capital's internet service. so far there are no reports of identity thefts because of the hackers. in news of the world tonight in libya today, fighters fighters loyal to gadhafi beat back rebels. in lima peru a series of explosions sent flames shooting into the air. people in the area ran as the tanks exploded inside the warehouse one after the other. there were reports that at least 20 tanks lieu up. no word on what started the explosions or fire and no reports of injuries. in the united kingdom, rescuers recovered the body of a fourth man killed in a welsh coal mine. part of the mine flooded yesterday which trapped inside. three men were managed to escape although one was critically injured. no word on what caused the mine to flood. attorneys for michael brusset characterize the grand jury testimony as biased, purgered and inadmissible. brusset is accused of raping a colleague in his home. he was reinstated back in february due to concern the case may have been tainted by political animosity it has california is among seven states that have joined the justice department's lawsuit to block the merger of at&t and team merger: new york, ohio and pennsylvania are now part of that lawsuit. in a statement today the justice department said the attorney's general of those states have been helping federal authorities investigate the proposed merger. the lawsuit claims the $39 billion merger would violate anti trust laws and reduce competition in the wireless marketplace. california attorney general camela harris issued a statement saying in part, enforcement of anti trust law is vital to protecting our state's economic strength. bill martin is here with your weekend weather forecast. proposed changes to san francisco's fisherman's wharf are not sitting well with everyone. what the city wants to ( grunting ) a proposed extension of the san francisco's historic f line will make it easier to get the fisherman's wharf. street artists who depend on that foot traffic aren't happy about the plan. >> well what they want to do is extend it down jefferson, come on liver worth. >> reporter: it's an extension which would take the f line through fort mason and back to fisherman's wharf. the controversy is the stop line that would move dario and other artists. moving may also hurt other artists. >> we only have a certain amount of spaces, as we get new influx of people, more people come into the program it'll be tough for everybody. >> reporter: they're asked the platform move west that way the artists who pump money into the economy can continue to work. >> that is the most significant area for them, they don't tend to sell any where else. and they would lose their jobs. they would suffer. and their families would suffer. >> reporter: mte
