Good night tonight on nightline there were over 300 people aboard asiana flight 214. It was a reallife nightmare. A crash landing that left two dead and hundreds injured. Tonight we ask what really happened during those final seven seconds . Critical evidence. I cant tell. Trayvon martins emotional father called to the stand by George Zimmermans own lawyers. Testifying it was his voice, not Trayvon Martin calling for help on those 911 calls. From matt harvey to mischa tate, theyre some of the worlds most talented athletes. Oh, and did i mention they have the bodies of greek gods . Tonight on feed frenzy, espn the magazines body issue. Announcer keep it right here, america. Good evening, and thanks for joining us. Car crashes are an all too frequent reality of modern life. But your chances of being in a plane crash are minuscule. On saturday the improbable and unthinkable occurred at San Francisco International Airport on a boeing 777. More than two dozen people remain hospitalized. And tonight abcs david wright takes us inside how this could have happened and the tiny Flight Attendant who saved lives by carrying passengers twice her size off the plane during the crash landing in San Francisco. Right clear around. Reporter seven seconds out, a final burst of speed. The pilot of asiana 214 must have realized he was coming in too low and too slow when his controls literally started to shake. An automatic warning four seconds out. Then this. Go around. Go around, he says. Just 1. 5 seconds before his tail hits the tarmac. Too late to save asiana 214. Oh, my god, thats scary. Theyre running out. Reporter the emergency chutes deployed. The passengers sliding down. Filmed here by a horrified family watching from the terminal building. Everybodys just running. Reporter the first major plane crash in the u. S. In four years. A life or death drama that dropped out of the clear blue sky. Moments earlier on board asiana 214 the inflight movie was ending. Love 911, a korean romance about love between two firefighters. Among the passengers watching, Benjamin Levy in 30k, the exit row, headed home from a business trip. He looked out his window, suddenly worried. I was by the window. We were flying too low. Reporter up in business class, seat 3k, hiphop producer eugene ross sensed a problem too. I looked outside. Worried. You know, nervousness. And i could see the runway just right there. And the plane was definitely the plane was going to hit it. Reporter the passengers say it felt to them like the pilot gunned the engine and pulled up trying at the last minute to abo abort. I dont know what happened. I was inside. But it felt like we were going back up and we went back down pretty hard. As i just grabbed whatever, and bang. The impact was so strong. Reporter asiana 214 bellyflopped onto the runway and started to skid. It was slow motion. I couldnt believe this was happening. Were going to be okay. I felt i was dying. And i thought that was it. 214 heavy. Emergency vehicles are responding. Reporter emergency crews leapt into action. Our officers go on the air right away to clear the channel. I said code 33. That means clear the channel. Nobody talks. Then he said 777 just hit the runway. Reporter smoke quickly filling the cabin. Emergency responders knew they had mere minutes to get everyone out. Oh, you could smell the smoke and the jet fuel and the burned grass thats out there. Reporter at two of the exits emergency slides inflated inside the aircraft, pinning Flight Attendants to the wall. I saw the Flight Attendants leg sticking out of the from the wall, interior wall. And behind the wall was the emergency evacuation slide was inflated. So she was stuck in between. Or she was sitting there. I dont know. Maybe the door got opened or something. And she was trying to give a signal to us by moving her leg like this. Reporter the First Police Officers to arrive say the flight crews asked for knives. Presumably to cut them away. Inside the now smoldering wreckage, you could barely move. You could smell fuel in the air and just a big mess. Like a tornado went through the thing. And overhead luggage racks were down on the ground. Everything was shattered. You couldnt find a walking pathway on the plane at all. Looked like Somebody Just tore the whole place apart inside. Reporter out of 307 souls on board, including passengers and crew, all but two survived. An astonishing number. The two who died, chinese teenagers on their way to christian summer camp. Their parents obviously heartbroken. Tragically, its possible that one of the two girls may have survived the plane crash, only to be run over by a fire truck rushing to the scene. What you may not know is was this person alive or dead when the truck came in contact with them . Thats correct. Reporter today the National Transportation safety board confirmed investigators are reviewing videotapes and consulting with the San Francisco coroner to determine exactly what happened. We want to make sure that we have all the facts before we reach any conclusions. Reporter it is, however, remarkable there werent more deaths. But its worth noting that Safety Experts say the chance youll die in your next scheduled flight are about 45 million to 1 and the tragedy aboard asiana 214 demonstrates that even severe plane crashes are survivable events. Statistics show that 95 of people survive. In this case 99 . The Discovery Channel recently conducted a dramatic experiment to understand why. Purposely crashing this 727. The pilots abandoning ship in midair. Jumpers away. Jumpers away. Reporter leaving a bunch of crash test dummies, cameras, and computers to record what happened next. The findings . That bracing yourself for impact does make a difference. I suspect this one may have a concussion and that one may have a broken leg. Reporter minimizing the chance youll get knocked out or worse. Indeed, many of the injuries aboard flight 214 are from concussive trauma. One of the patients we talked to said that the seats in front of her all collapsed and came at her. She was sitting in her seat, and thats how she got her injuries. Reporter so what exactly happened on asiana 214 . The National Transportation safety board is now investigating that. The crucial flight data and cockpit voice recorders already being reviewed at the ntsb lab in washington. For its part asiana has already ruled out any problems with the aircraft. And Company Officials insist the pilot was a veteran with more than 10,000 hours of flight experience. Much of it on 747s. But he was just being trained on the 777. Only 43 hours at the helm of this particular aircraft. In fact, it was his first time landing a 777 in San Francisco. It would be a mistake for any of us to say that, well, somebody who has only 40 hours in this new type of airplane but hes been flying big heavy turbo jets for a long time, that means he really isnt up to snuff. Because they would never have turned him loose unless he had finished all the training courses and all the check lines. Reporter why it happened and who or what is to blame is now the focus of the safety investigation. And even if human error was a factor, the fact that 99 of the passengers survived will surely count in the pilots and the airlines favor. Indeed, the flight crew included plenty of heroes. The Flight Attendant was so tiny and skinny. I couldnt believe how powerful, how strong she was. She was holding i mean carrying people twice as big as her. And helping other Flight Attendants and even outside the plane, after she got out of the plane, she was running around the plane like, you know, without any fear. Just trying to help. Reporter 40yearold yun hee lee, injured herself, was the last person to leave the airplane. Today she told Korean Television how she rescued some of the survivors herself. There was a little boy who was afraid to go down the slide, she said. So i put him on my back and slid down with him. Ben levy helped people, too, before grabbing his carryon and heading out himself. In it, his mobile phone. He immediately called his wife. I took my phone out and i basically called her right away and said we were in a crash. I mean, i told her im fine and theres been a plane an accident. But im okay. So ill talk to you later. Reporter eugene ra cant believe hes still here. To be honest with you, i still cant believe. I still cant believe im back alive. Last night i tried to get some sleep, close my eyes. And every time when i close my eyes there are, you know i kind of go back to the same spot. Like the plane was hitting the ground. And cant get rid of it. Just too strong. Reporter a moment that he and so many others here will never forget. Im david wright for nightline in San Francisco. An amazing story in so many ways. Thank you, david. Next, George Zimmermans lawyers call the father of Trayvon Martin to the stand. Why did they want to hear from him . Could save you fifteen percent or more on car insurance. Mmmhmmm. Everybody knows that. Well, did you know that old macdonald was a really bad speller . Your word is. Cow. Cow. Cow. C. O. W. E. I. E. I. O. [buzzer] dangnabbit. Geico. Fifteen minutes could save you. Well, you know. Today in florida George Zimmermans attorneys presented their first full day of witnesses in his murder trial. Throughout the trial zimmermans friends and family have been called to the stand not just to say that they knew him or liked him but that they recognized his voice on critical pieces of evidence, those disputed 911 calls. And in a case filled with he said she said another twist. The first testimony from Trayvon Martins father comes during the defense case in the trial of George Zimmerman. State versus George Zimmerman reporter its one of the most crucial questions in the George Zimmerman case. Do you recognize that voice . Reporter who was heard yelling for help on the various 911 calls placed that night . Do you need police, fire or medical help maybe both. Im not sure. Theres just someone screaming outside. Help do you think hes yelling help . Yes. Reporter prosecutors argue the voice was that of 17yearold Trayvon Martin, shot once in the chest and killed after a confrontation with zimmerman last february. Is it a male or a female . It sounds like a male. Reporter now all eyes and ears are on those 911 calls, which could help show who was the aggressor, who was on top, who was beating who before the fatal shot was fired. And was this selfdefense as zimmerman claims . So help you god . I do. Reporter today witness after witness. Friends of George Zimmerman. Were called by his defense team to testify theyre confident it was him, zimmerman, heard screaming on those tapes. Do you know whose voice that is in the background screaming . Yes. Definitely. Its georgie. I hear it. I hear him. I thought it was george. Whose voice is it . George zimmermans voice. Theres absolutely no doubt in my mind that is George Zimmerman. And i wish to god i did not have that ability to understand that. Reporter this comes after the mothers of both martin and zimmerman took the stand late last week. Both calmly, confidently and definitively identified the voice as that of her son on the 911 tapes. Who do you recognize that to be . Trayvon benjamin martin. Im sure thats georges voice. Reporter but what about Trayvon Martins father, tracy martin . He didnt testify as part of the prosecutions case. Please be seated. Reporter and today the reason for that may have become clear. According to two police officers, including the lead detective, two days after the incident tracy martin heard the 911 tapes for the first time and said he did not believe the voice on the tapes was trayvon. I inquired as if that was in fact his son calling for help. And what was his response . He looked away and under his breath as i interpreted it said no. The truth so help you god . I do. Reporter tracy martin doesnt remember it that way. In a bold and some might say risky move the defense then called trayvons father to the stand. I just kind of shook my head and said i cant tell. So your words were i cant tell . Something to that effect. But i never said no, that wasnt my sons voice. Reporter he now says after hearing the tape 20 or more times hes convinced it was trayvons cries for help on those tapes. I was listening to my sons last cry for help. I was listening to his life being taken. And i was coming to grips that trayvon was here no more. The defense wants the jury just to focus on the 911 call and the screams being heard because if those screams are George Zimmermans then the jury may find that he was acting in selfdefense. The government, though, wants this jury to focus on who started this confrontation, who was the initial aggressor. Reporter in a blow for the prosecution today, judge Deborah Nelson ruled zimmermans lawyers can introduce evidence that Trayvon Martin had marijuana in his system when he was killed. They say it supports zimmermans call to police. They said are you following him . Reporter when he reported the person he spotted looking like he was on drugs. This guy looks like hes up to no good or hes on drugs or something. Reporter medical examiner shiping bao first reported the amount too low to affect martin but later changed his assessment. Today the defense also called mixed martial arts trainer adam pollack fought stand. He briefly worked with zimmerman but said his client couldnt throw a punch. Did he ever progress to the point where he could box somebody else . Absolutely not. Hes still learning how to punch. He didnt know how to really effectively punch. Reporter the defense trying to bolster its case that zimmerman would never have been able to beat and pummel martin. The defense case is expected to wrap up this week, but probably not before more fireworks. Next, Eliot Spitzer coming back to new york politics.
