Abcs david kerley is tracking the latest. Good morning, david. Reporter good morning, george. A grim week in aviation with what appears to be another tragedy. Heres what we know at this point from africa. An air algiers flight from burkina faso, algeria lost contact from controllers and has disappeared from radar. The aircraft was md83 that was being operated by a Spanish Company for air algiers and on first report, a total of 116 people on board. The breakdown, 110 passengers and a crew of 6. Thats from the Spanish Company operating the jet but air algiers said there were 119 people on board. The jet was 50 minutes into its flight when contact was lost. It was flying basically as you saw a south to north route from that small african nation to algiers, the capital of algeria. There was bad weather along the fourhour route and the jetliner may have run into a violent thunderstorm about 50 minutes in. There was a report, the pilot was asking to be rerouted. Theres 50 french national, 4 canadians no americans so far. This area is desolate and also a conflict zone, al qaeda is likely operating there, george. Its unlikely that al qaeda affiliate had the missiles that could hit a passenger jet. Youre right because this would have been flying at altitude, 33,000. They do have shoulderlaunched missiles but thats when an aircraft is near the ground landing or taking off so unlikely very early to say this but unlike it was a missile. Thanks very much. A difficult time right now in aviation. To the extreme weather. Severe storms from coast to coast and scorching temperatures hitting records out west. Ginger has the very latest for us. Striking from Newark Airport in new jersey to albuquerque, new mexico, lightning, gusting wind, rain and scorching heat. Skies opening up over yankee stadium. The infield is just a mess. Reporter downpours forcing crews to roll out the tarps quickly, one person getting stuck underneath. And caramel, indiana, three homes catching fire after this Lightning Strike while at the famed Saratoga Springs racetrack in new york, spectators clearing out just before lightning demolished this tree. Just exploded like somebody put some dynamite or something in it and just blew it up. Reporter in phoenix, extra hot. The temps soaring to 114. Tying a record for the day. It is unbearable. Its like a sauna. Reporter so hot our abc affiliate decided to forgo an oven cooking chocolate chip cookies outside. But the hottest spot of the day goes to thermal, california. Temps rocketing to 119 degrees. And today phoenix will get to 113 just shy of a record. Look at some of the other scorching numbers there in the southwest. Plenty of tripledigit heat. And look at palm springs, even, 116. The other thing i needed to tell you about with the Severe Weather, of course, strong storms possible along that front in the southeast, so look for damaging wind possibilities there and hail. But back, another storm coming up in parts of the rockies just east of them, minot, bismarck and pierre all right there. Ill have much more in the nations weather. For now, though, back to george and robin. Thank you, ginger. We turn to a botched execution in arizona. The convicted killer should have died quickly from lethal injection. Instead dragged out for almost two hours, the latest execution raising questions about lethal injections and the death penalty. Pierre thomas is here with the details. Good morning, pierre. Reporter good morning, george. The state of arizona sought to execute an inmate but had a hell of a time doing it. To some it was an unconstitutional spectacle. Essentially torture. To others, poetic justice. It should have taken about ten minutes to execute Joseph Rudolph wood using a controversial lethal cocktail of drugs. Instead it took an hour and 57 minutes, so long his attorneys filed an emergency appeal with the u. S. Supreme court. During his execution, claiming he was gasping and snorting, struggling to breathe. Some of the witnesses were shocked. It was tough for everybody in the room. At a certain point you wondered if he ever was going to die. Reporter woods case follows botched executions in ohio and oklahoma, where the use of these drugs also have been challenged. He was put to death for the murders of gene and debbie dietz that he shot in close range. Family of the victims had no sympathy for how he died. You dont know what excruciating is. Whats excruciating is seeing your dad lying there in a pool of blood. Seeing your sister lying in a pool of blood. Thats excruciating. This man deserved it. Its not just about him. Its about other people that suffered that are still suffering. He smiled and laughed at us and then went to sleep. Reporter arizonas governor said while the execution took longer than she would have liked state doctors said the inmate did not suffer. She has ordered a review. Robin. All right, pierre, thank you. Now to that bizarre rampage in colorado. All caught on camera. A heavily armed man terrorizing a city. Carjacking several vehicles before police were finally able to take down the suspect. Abcs Clayton Sandell has that story. Reporter this is the bizarre crime spree caught on camera that put a city on edge. A male with a long gun and a female. Theyre just on the north side of the road. Reporter take a look at this man. Armed with a rifle and a handgun terrorizing the Lookout Mountain area west of denver wednesday afternoon. He and an alleged female accomplice seen here minutes earlier, climbing down an embankment toward the highway. Police say they just carjacked two different people including bush suters coworker. Pulled out a machine gun and started shooting at him so he dove in the bushes. Reporter after crashing both stolen vehicles, the two then headed off on foot. We do have shots fired. They do have the high ground on us. Reporter you can see the woman who turns out to be a juvenile is arrested. But the man tries making a getaway in these dump trucks. That doesnt work so he walks into this house, a couple inside. Then watch this. He comes blasting through the closed garage door in their suv, driving until it gets stuck right next to that interstate. Hes pointing a gun at cars. Reporter but watch this motorcycle deputy, the suspect drops his gun, but keeps moving toward another car, until that deputy makes the tackle. Got him down on the ground middle of the highway. Nypd Officials Say the entire force may have to be retrained. And new video this morning of a massive fire tearing through this oil refinery in mexico forcing hundreds of people to evacuate. This is the third accident at this plant this year. Nine workers have been injured. Theodore wafer claims he thought 19yearold Renisha Mcbride was breaking into his home in the wee hours of the morning, and abcs alex perez has that story. Reporter theodore wafers trial beginning with emotional and at times theatrical opening arguments wednesday. Boom, boom, boom, boom. Front door. He gets on the ground. Crawling. In fear. Reporter Defense Attorneys arguing wafer feared for his life when he shot and killed 19yearold Renisha Mcbride through the screen door of his suburban detroit home last november. But the prosecution said otherwise. The investigation will show you that there was no signs of any attempted breaking into this house. Reporter investigators say mcbride was drunk and had injured herself in a car accident when she stumbled on to his porch in the middle of the night pounding on the door looking for help. This is the door he shot through. Is that going to keep anybody out . No. Reporter at the center of the trial a michigan law that allows a person to use deadly force to defend themselves in their own home if they honestly, or reasonably believe theyre in danger of death or great bodily harm. Prosecutors argue mcbride was unarmed and posed no threat to him. The screen door that she was shot through was still locked at the time that the police got there. Reporter this morning, abc news has learned exclusively that Florida State law professor dan markel was shot in the side of the head at relatively close range friday morning at his home in this tiny tallahassee neighborhood. Its the latest in a number of tantalizing new clues about a mystifying murder in a sleepy college town. He was the intended target in this situation. Reporter police now putting out pictures of this toyota prius which they say was seen in the area on the day of the crime. A Police Tip Line also netting 50 tips so far, but one potentially big clue, what wasnt there, no sign of forced entry into the house. Theres not enough information to suggest this is a contract murder. It certainly could be. The most likely theory. Its somebody he knows. Reporter still with no suspects named, police are being careful not to reveal certain evidence. We must make sure that we are keeping the integrity of this case so we can bring it to the prosecution. The sensitive issue reporter he was a harvard grad widely published and left behind two sons and an exwife, wendi adelson, also an fsu law professor who recently appeared on this internet talk show. Documents obtained by abc news show the two finalized their divorce a year ago but still had been in a battle over access to their two young boys. Tallahassee police say theyve questioned adelson but have not named her or anyone else a suspect. Were speaking to everybody who has an affiliation with mr. Markel. Reporter adelsons attorney said his client is devastated and scared because she doesnt know who did this or why. And at this point, neither do police. That in conjunction with the fact that he was shot in the head has made it clear to the authorities that this was targeted. This was not random. It wasnt a breakin. It wasnt a robbery. That he was the intended victim here. And i think thats the reason that theyve gone public with that information. They want to reassure the public there, the neighbors, et cetera, you dont have to worry, theres not a killer out there on the loose. This was someone who was specifically targeted and thats a really important clue. Thats why they start to focus on everyone who might have known the free fesser. We tend to always talk about the personal side. He was involved in a divorce, et cetera. Dont forget the professional side, too. A lot of these cases you see people with professional animus towards someone. Would was he working with theyll want to know, maybe things said on his blog, who might have had a motive to want him dead doesnt just mean personal. Is this the kind of case that usually gets solved . Yes, yes, because the fact that they believe he was so specifically targeted allows them to immediately go to the people that have a motive to kill him and i think that itll likely be solved in the relatively near future. The boy was killed. His father is still missing. Gio benitez has the story. Reporter tragedy in the open seas during an incredible worldwide journey. 17yearold Haris Suleman and his father babar crashing this singleengine plane into the South Pacific ocean near american samoa, less than an hour after taking off tuesday night. Haris was piloting the plane and perished. Authorities have not yet located his father. The air Traffic Controller saw the lights of the plane go down. Reporter the father and son team from plainfield, indiana, were trying to fly around the world in 30 days blogging and posting photos from the trip along the way. All to raise a Million Dollars to build schools in pakistan. I wouldnt be in the United States and i wouldnt be a pilot today without the education that my father received and i want pakistani kids to have the same opportunity i had. Well, and we never stopped talking about him. Reporter this weekend they were thrilled to get an unbelievable phone call. Reese had been found in tacoma, washington, almost 2,000 miles away thanks to a microchip connecting him to the family. It was just a fairy tale. Hes had a fairy tale. Now, the woffords say they dont blame the millers for wanting to keep the dog but they are upset with the shelter they adopted him from for reportedly not checking for a microchip in 2007 and while they are devastated they say theyre comforted in knowing that the dog is in a good home with a loving family but so sad because no one did anything wrong here. Reporter in the quest to stay healthy, losing a few pounds frequently comes down to simple math, less fat, less sugar, more protein and a secret weapon for many in the weight loss war is greek yogurt. Instead of two grams of sugar like the label listed, Consumer Reports says the lab found the average sugar content was 11. 4 grams. More than five times the listed amount. A big deal to some. Consumers like a diabetic would be looking at that nutrition label making decisions for their daily life and intake and if theyre counting sugar grams every gram counts for them. They say they recognize that Consumer Reports is a trusted publication and are looking into why their test results differ. A couple who singled out acadia as their favorite place after visiting all 48 lower states. We were blown away, Cadillac Mountain, the beaches. And the views are just amazing. Reporter were here at the top of Cadillac Mountain where the sun comes up where the first place in the u. S. To see the sun rise and were only two miles from a sandy beach. You can hike. You can bike. You can watch wildlife. You can sit on the beach. Reporter while on top of the mountain we came across a native american drum circle playing an honor song. They even let me try it out. How do you convey your feelings . What is it like as an actress . You know, part of its easy. I dont have to learn lines. When damon first pitched me this idea, i mean i genuinely like to watch people and listen to people and when my character started doing more things and taking action and some of the actions are not going to be particularly liked by the audience, then i thought, you know, i tapped into that piece of me that wants to be liked and understood by the audience and had to let it go. Mystery is a great word for it. Exactly. Speaking of letting it go, i mean you really go there because you dont even wear any makeup. Yeah. On the show. Yeah.
