So mike told us earlier 3 to 4 inches in the north basowe want to get back. Were live in roanoke park with some major flooding. Amy. Reporter and lots of wind. I give up on the hood. Ive got an example for you of whatnot to do. Look at those two cars. Yes, there are two. Theres a white car there. You can barely see that one. They both tried to get through this standing water. Obviously didnt make it. Police say this is why you should never attempt to get through standing water. You just never know how deep it is. These drivers did get out okay. Now look at this video. This is why this has happened. Look how much rain has been falling and it just hasnt stopped. Very heavy at times. This is all in the north bay. Thats where we have been stationed this morning. We took this video along highway 101. We drove to lucky drive, all along the way up here to roanoke park we would find surprise areas of standing water for everyone to be careful around. We want you to have a good idea what youre going to be dealing with. Its so bad, look at this map. Northbound 101 in windsor is closed. They have closed it because theres so much water flooding there. Now, this town is near the Russian River. Its in the Russian River valley. And thats where we expected to see some flooding but so bad, highway 101 is closed. Back here in roanoke park we are on redwood drive. The creek here has spilled its banks. Thats the problem. And theyre going to leave these cars here until all of this recedes which is going to be a while because it is still raining. Live in roanoke park, abc 7 news. Where a tree came down on a house. Melanie woodrow is live with what shes seeing. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The rain has pretty much tapered off here, but yes, a tree did come down on a home. You can see it there and what you can see, but probably not hear right now is the home alarm thats been going off this morning. The homeowner just walked into the house a couple of moments ago. You can see theres some caution tape outside, but obviously dealing with a bit of an issue here. Were hoping to catch up with him right after we finish here. A neighbor described hearing a crackling and a boom overnight. Again, that home alarm has also been going off. We spoke with a couple of folks out here who have been running. This is obviously right on the beach and a lot of people are enjoying their workout but stopping and looking at this tree on the home here. We did stop near felton and thats where we saw a landslide earlier this morning. Some mud and debris and a pg and e staging area. Theyll be dealing with lots of expected Power Outages today. But people are telling me one of the biggest concerns in this area will likely be flooding. Melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. This is just coming into our live desk. People having to get rescued from their poems in pen grove. This situation went from bad to worse. You can see these people leaving their home wading through water thats waist high. Firefighters were there to help but then according to witnesses those folks actually went back into their home and then this is where it got worse. They had to call 911 a second time. Look at this. They then had to be rescued by boat the second time aroun and you see those crews there getting that couple out of their trailer home. The water rose approximately two and a half feet in 45 minutes. Those folks are doing okay, but certainly a warning to people that situations can change like that. You want to get your emergency kits ready. If an emergency official also tells you to get out, you want to get out. Back to you. Absolutely. Good advise. You want to advice alemany boulevard. That section is flooded. This is under highway 101. Officials are reminding people of the dangers of driving through flood water. You could get stuck. We showed you some pictures earlier. Athey do not ignore the warning signs put in place to protect you. And do you want to get some sandbags . A lot of cities have set up filling stations as people brace for this storm. In most cases they supply the bags and the sand but dont forget to take your own shovel because sometimes they dont have those. We have a list of sandbag locations on our website. Now, heavy rain in the sierra is making travel a bit easier for drivers heading to tahoe. This is a look at the wet roads along highway 50 and i80. This morning chains are required for some vehicles on parts of 80. No chain controls however required right now for highway 50. If you are heading to that toe be sure to take chains any way. Let others know where youre going as conditions in the mountains change with very little notice. Some of the video up there, dan, incredible. My goodness. If you can follow them on social media or even me, ill try to find it and retweet it for you. All that snow is melting. All that rain flooding. Lets talk about whats happening back here at home. Storm impact scale is still a 4. It may not be a 4 in your neighborhood right now but its going to be between now and 4 00. Well have our highest impact. Powerful wind gusts, more flooding and more wind damage is on the way. Heres a look at one of the areas thats been hit just over the last hour or so. Were starting to head into the east bay. You can see where 242 and 680 split. That is heading out right across the chicago highway its heading right through the delta. Let me show you some other areas that are starting to get heavier rain. You can see on the western side or the ocean side of San Francisco but let me show you oh, wow, look at that waiting in the wings. Lets put this into motion. Ill show you which way its going over the last two hours. Thats too much. Lets do it over the last hour and that is going to head right through and thats going to dip down and hit San Francisco all the way down to possibly halfmoon bay and slide over to places like san ramon. So thats where were looking at. Just some spotty heavier rain across the north bay right now in, napa. Every time one of these oranges comes across your neighborhood its going to create standing water and its going to stay there. Its not going to retreat because theres going to be more light rain behind it and possibly another push of moderate to heavy rain on top of it. Inland east bay, south bay for the most part, youre lucky right now. If youve got stuff to do go out and do it. But that is our atmospheric river. It stretches well down into the tropics and thats why we still have hours of rain. There it is. Its starting to spread into the baby 10 00 and into is Santa Cruz Mountains. Look at the red start to develop. We have a slight chance of thunderstorms. If we get under that the rain is even more intense and the ponding and flash flooding is even more likely and this stretches now in the south bay and into our inland. It gets more intense as we head from 11 00 to noon. If youre in the east bay and the south bay, just because it hasnt come yet, its coming. 1 00 to 2 00 well see a tapering but light rain with pockets of moderate rain as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. Now, turn around, dont drown. 6 inches knocks adults down. 1 foot carry a small car away. 2 feet will carry most vehicles away and weve still got the winds at 60 miles an hour so weve still got a chance for downed trees and power lines. More creeks, more streams are going to flood. River flooding is going to lag. River flooding is going to start later tonight and last through at least monday. Napa river, and then tomorrows rain probably wont add to the misery. Its a 2 and then well have lighter rain for tuesday and wednesday, but the big deal is just now unfolding. We need to were living for thursday at this point, really a chance to dry out. A chance to rest too. Absolutely. I mean, you try to drive in this stuff its intense. Absolutely. Thanks, mike. Well, bay area crab fishermen are itching to get back to work. Were itching to get them back to work because we want those crabs. First we have to wait for this storm to pass. We were in halfmoon bay where the crabbing boats are still docked. The storm is coming in and creating conditions that will keep those boats from going anywhere, probably until sometime tomorrow. When i looked at it earlier i believe it was blowing 45 knots which is bad. And i think there was like a 20, 22foot swell so it was just choppy and nasty. Bay area fishermen were out of work after striking in solidarity with crabbers in Washington State and oregon. That strike which was settled on friday was over the amount per pound of crab paid to the fishermen. Stay with us. Another wall of green approaching the bay area right now. Mikes been talking about that all morning. Weve been hit with plenty of rain, a lot of wind and more is on the way. We are on storm watch. Also i am encouraged. We showed up, we didnt give it all we had, but you know what . Next year were going to be fine. A tough day for raider nation, but fans trying to remain positive after a season ending l let me give you the potential of what lies ahead of us. Storm and creek flooding. Burn scars high potential. Hydroplaning high potential. Please slow down. I saw an accident happen in front of me this morning. Some im going to be nice here driver was doing like 80 when a torrential rain was coming down. He slid across three lanes both ways, took another car out and drove it into the median. Lets show you whats going on right now. This next batch of heavy flooding rain will be point reyes and guess what its going to do . Its going to create more flooding and water on the roadways. The river is going to flood this afternoon and evening along the expressway and weve got the napa river thats going to begin flooding in the next couple of hours up around st. Helena and tomorrow were going to have flooding on the Russian River around gernville and we already have some flooding in the Russian River. And we want to show you a quick look at some incredible storm images that we are getting from you our viewers and i want to start with this one. This is flooding in the corte madera creek. Let me play that video for you. The water breached the banks and is reaching those buildings. Also want to show you this tweet from catherine wheeler. Her tweet even saying does anyone have a canoe that we can borrow and thats an larkspur plaza drive. And take a look at this video also from earlier. This is on instagram. We have seen heavy rain falling there which is consistent with what mike just said. I know youre shooting those photos and videos where you live. We want to see them. Remember to post those on social media. Use the hash tag and you can see how much were tracking or online on our website. Back to you. Thanks. A level 4 storm on the abc storm impact scale which means all hands on deck which is why the big guys and everybodys in. Were enjoying being with you here this morning. All hands on deck and on the roof which is where our meteorologist is for us this morning. Hi. Luckily the wind is behind me but it has been very gusty. Theres a high wind advisory for the bay bridge. Numerous accidents all around the area. Im not surprised we saw cars stuck in the water. Some areas in the north bay got almost an inch of rain in just an hour. And in addition to that we are dealing with all the gusty winds. Heres a live look at 101. But i wanted to point out, weve seen wind gusts up to 64 miles an hour and in halfmoon bay close to 50 miles an our as well as sfo so be extra careful and try not to drive if you can avoid it altogether because weve also seen the rain really pound the north bay. If youre in the south bay you have a little bit of a break but it is all coming our way soon. Ive been watching mike and ive been looking at where the orange and yellows are especially heading toward San Francisco because thats when i know its going to be bad around here. Well, north bay, south bay, the peninsula, the entire bay area feeling the impact of this major storm. And thousands of homes and businesses are without power right now and were tracking those outages. Thats right. We are tracking flight delays at sfo as well. Theyve been growing in terms of delays and cancellations as this storm intensifies. Showing where the worst of the storm is right now. We have Team Coverage coming up. Live doppler 7 showing a lot of green with spots of yellow and orange as this storm drenching the bay area and intensifying as it moves ashore. The big impact is on bridges, roads and highways. We want to show you a live picture of tam cam right now. Wow. Thats all you can say. Just really getting hammered. We have we have been seeing more flooding and that is only expected to get worse as the morning wears on. Good morning, everyone, on this stormy sunday morning. January 8th. Glad youre with us this morning. We have crews across the bay area, but lets start with mike whos been tracking live doppler 7 all morning. All right. Im working on it right now trying to give you a street level look at where some ponding is going to develop and some minor flooding. There you go. You can see from krokt right across 80 if youre coming in from 780. Right there to downtown railroad avenue, broadway street, thats where were seeing some of the heavier rain and it stretches back to the San Pablo Bay and down toward hercules and just south of that, bear with me. Im just going to keep going around and looking for these hot spots. 580, you can see that as it merges with 80 just north of that. Carlson boulevard, well have some puddling right now and just south of that heres some developing right around the north pacifica heading through daily city and right through the gap to south San Francisco. This is going to climb over toward brisbane and San Francisco in the next 5 to 10 minutes and here, look at this big one. Its heavy there but what concerns me is where is it going . Areas that have already had three and a half to four inches and youve got this enormous slug of heavy rain that is just offshore and its about 15 to 30 minutes away from just soaking the marin county once again and when it does its going to cause more flooding. Some of those creeks may be temporarily receding, its going to cause those to once again start to climb and theyre going to climb even higher and when you factor that in with the winds gusting anywhere from 35 to nearly 50 miles per hour, were going to Power Outages just went from 10,000 to 21,000 according to pg and e and thats why well have more Power Outages in the next three to four hours. You can see the tower bouncing around right there. You can see the heavy rain. You cant see the Golden Gate Bridge its so heavy. Heaviest from 10 00 to noon in the bay. And then by 4 00 it starts to taper over the more scattered light and moderate showers. The worst of it is coming in right now. Strap yourself in. Its going to be rough. Some had doubted the intensity and look at this. We are in the middle of this storm and already its causing a huge mess. Thats right. Melanie woodrow is live where a tree fell down on a house this morning. Reporter thats right, dan. And were here with the homeowner. This is michael. Ill let him describe what happened here as we show you what it looks like, this tree on this home. And you were saying this is a vacation property. Right . It is. Nobody was here last night, but clearly a big boom and a crack and the tree fell on the house and were really grateful the tree didnt penetrate the roof and cause damage inside but its going to be a lot of work to move that tree off this house. Reporter as we pan from you up to the home so we can show folks what it looks like, tell me, you had done a remodel recently and you said really thats why the tree didnt penetrate the roof luckily. Right. Well, the house used to be a single story house, so the fact that it sort of you know, didnt have a lot of momentum because it didnt fall from very far and the house is structurally sound, so that made a huge difference in this case. Reporter and really a close call for some of your family members. Right . Can you describe that . Well, i kept mistaking the fact that my daughter was supposed to be here last night. My wife kept reminding me no, its next weekend. Her birthday is next weekend so when i got the calls this morning and i didnt hear about it until this morning, i was grateful that i was wrong about the date of her birthday. Yeah, well, not good to be wrong about your daughters birthday but very glad nobody was inside and i know you said you put your phone on do not disturb last night, you went to a movie and missed some critical phone calls. Note to self, youve got to take it off do not disturb to get the bad news. Reporter you were describing when you were much younger the mud slides that would happen here. How does what youre seeing right now compare to what youve seen in the past . Well, this is certainly not as devastating as this area has experienced over the years and the county has done a good job of making people build walls but i remember a cover story of a man that i knew sort of swallowed up in the mud. He survived, thank god, but it was sort of the first, you know, call to action to really make sure that these houses are protected from this bluff. Reporter thank you so much for talking to us. Were glad youre okay. Were glad your family is okay and that nobody was staying at this vacation rental, at least not this weekend as that tree came down on the home, but here of course, flooding is a concern as well. Thats what people in this area are telling us. Back to you. Thanks so much. Lucky break for that guy. We want to go back now to the north bay. The storm is leaving a big mess on the roads there. Really getting hammered. Were seeing major flooding in marin county and roanoke park and thats where Amy Hollyfield is for us. Still windy, i see, amy. Reporter it is. I cannot im having a fight with this hood and the hood is winning. I do want to show you in all seriousness whatnot to do and that is driving through standing water. They tell us every storm not to do it, but always someone does and weve got two cars here setting a perfect the poster children right here of whatnot to do. Do not drive through standing water. Look over here. Weve got a hampton inn and their driveway spits out to this flooded area. This is in rohnert park. A truck put it in reverse and then went through this field which is very muddy and he got stuck for a while. So just a real nightmare here. A real mess here in rohnert park from all this standing water and thats because this creek has overflowed. We are on redwood drive at rohnert expressway where the rain has let up a little bit but it is still raining. This is actually receded a bit since weve been standing here, so hopefully that trend will continue. But still oh, here goes another truck. Do you think hes going to go through it, steve . Were watching. A lot of people coming out here to take pictures at these cars that got stuck so not only have these drivers lost their cars but theyre making a lot of people social media pages today i think. Weve seen a lot of people come by and snap pictures. No one was hurt. The drivers got out okay, but their cars are going to stay there. Officials are not going to try to recover them. Theyre going to stay there until this recedes, so rough morning for those drivers but officials tell us over and over again, dont attempt this. Reporting live in rohnert fighting with my hood. I dont know what to do. Where did the pickup truck end up going . No, he went the other direction. Reporter i think he gave up. Yes. Yes, good for him. He watched our coverage. He listened to you. Good advice. Thanks, amy. Well, what a difference an hour makes. Pge saying 21,000 customers are without power. Thats more than double what we reported at the top of this newscast. Heres a breakdown. The peninsula is getting hit hard. 6,000 people are without power there. 5,300 in San Francisco, 5,200 in the east bay and 4,500 in the north bay. They say the bay area is accounting for huge chunk considering 50,000 are without power across california. And we do have breaking news coming in to our live desk out of oakland where there is a car that has gone into the water with people inside and i learned just a few minutes ago that one person has been rescued although another at least one other person may still be trapped. This rescue effort going on right now at doolittle drive and langeley street. That is right near the Oakland International airport. Its off the airport channel. It actually happens to be where the rental car area for the airport is. I want to show you some tweets coming in from oakland firefighters. This one specifically because they have a lot of people going out there. They have resources on their way. Rescue swimmers. The dive team is also requesting help from the Fire Departments dive team so that is underway. That situation, you want to avoid, so steer clear of that area if you are in oakland. No word on what caused the car to crash into those waters and still no word on those peoples conditions. We are working on getting information for you and some images. Lets hope they all get out of safely. Heres a live look at San Francisco international airport. A lot of people will not get out of here on time today. Officials are reporting 23 flight cancellations, five delays for flights leaving sfo, incoming flights, thats even worse. 25 have been cancelled, 18 delayed. With this weather anything can happen. Its always tricky at sfo. Be sure to check your flights before you head out to the airport. Farther south, levies that protect are being watched very closely. Officials tell us that several levies are so old they would not pass standards these days. In fact, the 67yearold levies have failed numerous times in major storms and plans to rebuild them have stalled. Well, the brunt of the storm is still to come and for most of the bay area this morning. Weve been here since 5 00 this morning, mike since earlier than that tracking all of this. Just a normal work day for me coming in at 3 00 and hitting the ground running but you go on at 5 00 instead of 4 30 but weve been busy and we appreciate all the crews out in the field. And those of you sending us video, thank you also. 3 and a half inches of rain right now. You can see the flooding right there on some of the onramps. In about 15 minutes youre about to get a half hour to 45 minutes of heavy rain. So more flooding is on the way for you and the rest of us. Ill show you live doppler 7 coming up. More flooding and also probably more trees down. Good point. Also ahead, homeowners in the north bay are waking up to trees on top of their homes. The cleanup is now underway. Heres your receipt. Have a nice day thank you. Start the car start the car start the car start the car the ikea winter sale. Wooooooo get up to 50 off select items. Now through january 10th. Ikea all right. Hi. Its me again and ive got another flooding event to tell you about. While you look at this one let me tell you about it. We have flooding happening right now. Weve had it happening all morning. This is going to continue until 10 30 so another 45 minutes and for about another hour and a half, flooding from the sonoma creek all the way down. I want to go i head and advance this and here in San Francisco, just getting reports of flooding, and lanes closed. Yeah, that seems to be it right now. Santa rosa, creek flooding on to roadway, and fox hunt lane near santa rosa so those are some of the newer flooding reports were getting. You can slee that slug of moisture and thats the area getting inundated with the heaviest of the wet weather. Lets take a look at whats going on. I want to show you one is broken off. Berkeley, hercules and this will hit fairfield within the next half hour or so creating some ponding on the roadways and minor flooding there. Ill be back with more in a minute. Well, rain is the big deal this morning, but winds are also a factor. Absolutely. And one of our intrepid colleague is out in it on top of the building tracking the incredible gusts. Its been going from the south and now its coming this way. Ive seen the rain come sideways and then there will be a lull and then all of a sudden, boom, the rain and the wind pick up. Im also seeing white caps out on the bay right now to give you an idea of how windy it is out there and check out the rainfall for the past 12 hours. San jose quite a lot less. Less than half of an inch right now and thats why theyre thinking it isnt quite a big storm yet, but the worst is still to come and i dont know if you can hear this, but it is suddenly picks up right now and thats what we were very concerned about, the sudden gusts and the strong rain. So be careful out there. Keep your head lights on if you do have to drive. All right. Thank you. Yeah, those gusty winds are responsible for toppling several trees. And Jessica Castro has that story from the live desk. Thats right. I have the evidence to show you right here on social media. This is from the marin county sheriff. This is a tree that crashed into a house. And you can see it also looks like it crashed into this white truck here as well. I want to show you this as well from the sheriff where a tree came down on a house in wilson avenue and you can actually hear if i click on the photo, you can see how large that tree is on top of the home. Looks like its on some type of awning and you can see the damage that was done there on the porch area that got destroyed and just within the last few minutes or so, not too far we also have trees crashing down into homes. They are one of the hardest hit areas, marin county, but we continue tracking all these images. Send them to us. Abc 7 now. Back to you. Our live Team Storm Coverage continues in just a minute. Heres a live look at highway 101. Mike nicco tracking the latest afoot and lighthearted i take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me, the long brown path before me leading wherever i choose. The east and the west are mine. The north and the south are mine. All seems beautiful to me. Let revisit the storm impact scale to give you an idea what to ux president elect. Expect what youre seeing up in the north bay to a lesser extent as you head into the south bay but not the Santa Cruz Mountains and other areas. Our highest impact on this major storm, a first in our exclusive storm impact scale that weave been using for two years now to let you know exactly what to expect. Heavy rain, powerful wind gusts. More wind damage. It is all on the way. All right. So here are my biggest concerns moving forward. Stream and creek flooding high. Burn scars going to be very high in the Santa Cruz Mountains because the heaviest of the rain hasnt hit you yet. Hydroplaning and Power Outages up to 21,000 and more on the way. River flooding, ill talk more about that in just a second. Let me get that off of the screen and that was the heavy rain moving through and thats the reason well continue the Flash Flood Warning until 10 30. Now lets talk about river flooding. It starts about 11 45 up near st. Helena and goes through monday morning so once it starts overflowing its banks its going to take a while to recede because all these streams and creeks and smaller tributaries that are flooding right now, this is what theyre feeding and it will flow downstream and hit napa at about 8 00 tonight the about 8 00 a. M. Were going to keep an eye on it because it may get higher depending on how much more rain we get and how much more runoff. The Russian River, Johnsons Beach that area from 3 00 tomorrow morning until possibly 3 00 thursday, once it goes up, the Russian River, its big and it holds a lot of water and its going to stay there. Heres my hour by hour look at whats going to happen. At 10 00, thats when you see the widespread yellows and oranges starting to move out of the north bay and into the heart of the bay, so thats just right around the corner if you think about it. And look at the reds that develop. We have a chance of some thunderstorms. Weve had one so far and when you get under that that means the rain is even more intense. That means the winds are even more intense. That means the probability of flooding and wind damage and Power Outages goes up considerably when one of these storms roll through. Theyre in the heart of the bay and possibly in san jose, definitely going to be in the Santa Cruz Mountains and by noon theyre still there and by 1 00 they start to pull out a little bit out of the south bay and behind that by 2 00 were starting to see another batch of light steady rain with some moderate impulses in it starting around 2 00 and lasting through 3 00. You can see how quickly its going to dissipate. By 4 00 were starting to see a little bit of a regeneration. 5 00, 6 00, 7 00, 8 00, its not going to stop until possibly tomorrow morning. But there will be plenty of leftover water for the morning commute. So 6 inches can knock an adult down. 12 inches carry a car away and then you see them running into other things and causing damage and knocking down trees and power lines themselves and we dont want that to happen. So slow down. Southerly winds 25 to 35 for most of us. You saw the map if you were with us a few minutes ago. Gusts down to 50 at bay level at sfo. Wea weve had some reports of trees down or at least a limb i saw and were going to see more of this throughout the afternoon hours. Heres a quick look at my forecast. The storm is a 4. It may not be a 4 right now its going to be a 4 when it gets to you. The next couple of storms are colder. They dont have as much moisture and the damage is going to be a lot less with tomorrows moderate storm and then with tuesday and wednesday thats just some lighter rain thats going to be honestly kind of annoying and aggravating compared to what weve just been through. Well take that. Well take a little annoying drive compared to now where some places we cant drive at all because its flooding and by thursday we all go whew. If the weather is really relatively warm. Its called atmospheric river. We get three to five of them a year. This one is just unusually strong and it come from the tropics so its warmer and it has more moisture because of that. And we are going to stay on the air at least until 10 30 because of the intensity of this storm. So we want to keep people up to date and keep tracking it for them. Our team is here, so stay with us. Youre looking at live doppler 7. Showing which parts of the bay area are getting the worst of the storm right now and as mike has been telling you, if its not a 4 where youre living right now, probably will be in a little while so this storm is getting stronger. And well be right back with live Team Coverage of the growing problems that this storm is causing everywhere. We need to be ready for my names Scott Strenfel and r im a meteorologist at pg e. And good morning, welcome back to abc 7 mornings. You are watching kgo San Francisco. Great to be with you this morning as we continue our live storm watch coverage. Love having you here. And one more time, we want to go back to the north bay which is really kind of bearing the brunt of the storm right now. It is at this moment. Amy hollyfield is live with some of the worst flooding weve seen so far. Reporter changed my title. Say a soaked all the way through Amy Hollyfield because theres not a dry point on my body. I am just my pants, i cant believe they even call them waterproof because that is a poor description of what they are. The situation here, the water is receding a bit so these to get cars pretty soon. These two cars illustrate for us perfectly, this is what can happen. A lot of people coming out here to look and shaking their head in shock that these people werent even in suvs, just sedans that tried to attempt this. Not that an suv would make it, but convertible come up to the end and negotiate it. Then the driver and his daughter walked over here, they were in town from illinois. They rented a rus tanning convertible, thought they would see San Francisco. Not happening. They said, we thought you guys were having a drought. They said the power went out at the hotel. Its back on. The businesses are open. Look at owl tf people that come byo
