We absorb it from sunlight just by walking out of the door. And vitamin d. Has long been known to help strengthen bones. But could it help fight off the ravages of aging as well. If you happen to be a worm, the answer is definitely yet. Gordon and katie are researchers at the Buck Institute in novato. They were using the worms to study proteins that degrade with aging. And that are associated with agerelated diseases like alzheimers. So in alzheimers there is a protein that gets sticky and starts to become toxic and so if you have that protein in a worm, the same thing happens an the worm gets sick. The damaged proteins come together and appears as fluorescent lobs in the worms to mimic human diseases. And since researchers could track that process, they decided to perform a high speed screening for drugs that might slow or even reverse it. And then we looked at what the drugs were and found that one was vitamin d. And that is when we got excited because we know that vitamin d. Is related to age related diseases and a lot of anecdotal evidence that this might be an interesting player. They say vitamin d. Slowed the deterioration, it also extended median life span in the worms by more than 30 . They believe it works by affecting genes that impact longevity and agerelated diseases. Worms are far from people but results are intriguing enough that they want to study vitamin d. In small animals and to learn how it might work in people. The big hope of the research is that well find new ways to treat agerelated diseases and what were trying to do is extend health span and that comes along with that but the aim is to make people healthier for longer. And if successful, at least some credit will go to some very colorful and very useful worms. Cheryl jennings. Abc 7 news. Vitamin d. Supplements are already prescribed to many elderly patients.
