Two people were killed after this car hit two trees along southbound 101 near the willow road offramp just before 2 00. The driver and passenger died at the scene. The willow offramp was closed until about 3 30k a. M. The chp says a man is dead after an accident on 780 in veteran eatia, investigators say the driver lost control of his toyota and crashed into a guardrail and the path of another cool. State troopers believe the driver may have suffered a medical emergency before losing control. They say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor. A tech entrepreneur is out of jail this morning, but could face charges after getting into the fight with a driver while he was on his bike. At the intersection of east blithedale and camino alto in mill valley. Witnesses thought the victim might die, the beating was so severe. There needs to be some sort of better system, better bike lanes. Hes talking about this stretch of east blithedale avenue and camino alto. Police say it was here that a fight between a driver and a cyclist led to one man being arrested and the other, badly beaten. I think that there should be like bike lanes. And they should be huge. And we should be protected. Mill Valley Police tell me they arrested 40yearold jeffrey smock on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Police say he got off his bike and beat the driver of a pickup truck so severely. Witnesses could only watch in stunned disbelief. Cops arrived to find a man covered in blood and smock was arrested. Police would not tell us what weapon he used. Hello . Yes, man this is nick smith from abc7 news, im trying to reach mr. Smock. We tried to reach jeff smock, but we were told he wasnt home and our calls were not returned. Police have not identified the beaten man, but a friend of the victim tells abc7 news he is home from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries. Mill Valley Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the fight or captured video call police, in mill valley, nick smith, abc7 news. One person is dead and six others injured after a car driven by an elderly man plowed into an ice cream parlor in Southern California. Police say the car jumped a curb, ran through a fence and crashed into people standing outside a ice korean shop in orange county. Witnesses say it looked like the driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. Three kids and two adults were taken to the hospital with injuries. The driver was not hurt and is cooperating with police. New details this morning about the bay area teen who stowed away on a flight from san jose to maui, the 15yearold is still in the hospital in hawaii and his father has not been able to visit him. Family members told our media partner, the San Jose Mercury news, the boys mother is in a refugee camp in eethiopiethiopi. And claims her husband brought her children to be in the United States without her knowledge. She said shes trying to get a sponsor to come to the United States to see her kids. Yayas father said he wants to travel to hawaii to reunite with his son but cant. In the east bay, people and police are searching for crews after a crime spree thursday night. Dozens of cars were vandalized, as well as cars in different neighborhoods. We get the story from antioch. Reporter this is what a lot of antioch residents were doing after at least 33 cars and two home windows were smashed out sometime in the Early Morning. I drove up and down the street to find out who else and i saw at least five cars were broken. It happened in the southeast part of antioch, where police say the vandals used large river rocks to break windows. But some residents think they used a number of objects. Curtis scott insurance deductible is 500 which means hes paying for this new 190 windshield out of his own pocket. This windshield repair crew said it replaced six windshields. And then i saw the car next to the truck and i heard someone saying to her, hurry up and get in the car and they drove off. She got a vehicle description. This morning, a visiting businessman something called a hero after he helped save two car crash victims. Idaho native, Wayne Rancourt had just landed on Oakland International airport on thursday and was riding a shut toll b. A. R. T. When he spotted an overturned car. When the shutting pulled over, rancourt and other passengers jumped out to help the 95yearold driver and a 75yearold passenger. The driver was badly cut, so rancourt took off his shirt to stop the bleeding. Paramedics arrived and took the victims to the hospital. We spoke to rancourt by skype from his boise home. I think that these guys made it okay and got to the hospital and were getting treatment and were going to be okay. That made my day. It was probably the best thing i accomplished yesterday. The National Transportation safety board has released a preliminary report on the to your bus crash on interstate 5 two weeks ago. It happened west of chico on april 10th. The ntsb report showed the fedex truck drift aid cross the highway median and sideswiped a white nissan before plowing into the bus. The report does not explain why the fedex truck veered off course, ten people were killed, including five High School Students from Southern California. The ntsb said it could be months before the final report is complete. A marin county girl has lost the fight to keep her chickens. This month we told you about 9yearold rain mathis and her family who wanted to keep four hens, which she considers her pets. The family was sued by the kentwood home owners association, demanding the animals be removed. Family still plans to take the matter to court in july. Three bay area cities have abandoned the programs. And south San Francisco will end theirs in august. Now more people are coming up with unusual ways to beat the cameras. Heres 7 on your sides Michael Finney with the story. Terry recalls the moment she drove her vehicle through the intersection of howard and 9th in San Francisco on october 23rd. She says her car had just entered the intersection when she saw the flash of one of the red light cameras and knew she would get a ticket. It doesnt mean that the technology was reliable. Or that i actually had crossed the limit line prior to the light turning yellow. It doesnt mean that i was driving the vehicle at that time. Sherry happens to be a defense attorney who takes quite a lot of traffic cases. Andrew knows a lot about red light cameras, too, hes the photo enforcement manager at the south San FranciscoPolice Department. Im able to see the wheels turning and the brake lights. And the photos are very high quality, too, i can see distinguishable traits on each face. This is a video from various red light cameras, of red light violators getting into accidents across the country. Its from american traffic solutions. A major red light camera provider in the United States. As you can see, the cameras can capture quite a lot. This mount, the south San Francisco city council went against the recommendations of the Police Department. It voted to discontinue use of red light cameras when the contract expires in august. They felt that the accident rates had not been impacted significantly by the installation of the camera program. Not all evidence from red light cameras is clear. These are photos captured by the red light camera in sherrys case. You cannot identify the driver as either a man or a woman. It was incredibly blurry. A judge dismissed the case and sherry wont have to pay the 500 fine. Sherrys case was fairly straightforward. But some motorists will go to extreme measures to beat a red light ticket. I have a guy that comes through as a mime and puts his hands off the wheel and paints his face as a mime. We found this ad in Popular Science magazine. The photo mask cover promises to obscure at least part of your license plate from red light cameras. These are illegal in california. Still we were curious to see if these really work. This is what the photo plate cover looks like installed. You can see directly on, you can read the numbers just fine. But if the cameras are over there, those numbers are blurred. It would be tough to get a ticket from a red light camera with this. We decided to put the photo plate to the test. We set up a camera atop one of our live trucks using specifications provided to us by the San Francisco municipal transportation agency. We got into a vehicle and drove by the camera, to see what it could capture. As you can see, the camera could make out everything on our license plate except the last digit. The folks at photo mask covers said they considered our test a success. They said, at least one letter will always be covered and Police Agencies are not supposed to guess. As we said, these are illegal in the state of california. Violators could get a fixaticket and have to pay an administrative fine of about 25. Its a disorder thats hard to understand if you havent experienced it. But now doctors can experience it. Nice and cozy. Thats an occulus rift Virtual Reality headset, made by a small startup that facebook just acquired for 2 billion. Built for entertainment, but a San Francisco based company had other ideas, they make animated teaching tools for health care companies. Imagine being in one. You really feel like youre in a different world. Youre able to look around and navigate and move. It can be a little disorienting because youre taken to another place. A place where can you look at people and theyll turn to stare right back at you. For the doctors and caregivers who go through this training, its not about seeing and hearing, its about feeling. To put yourself in the mind of an actual you know, individual thats suffering from schizophrenia. But the goal there was to really provoke empathy from the user. This is culio, 500pound and growing elephant seal now at home at the pittsburgh zoo. North Coast Marine Mammal Center nursed him back to health after he was stranded on pebble beach. Not only did culio lose his way, he also lost his sight. Zoo keepers say theyll have to use touch and verbal cues to train culio.
