No reports of damage or injuries, but a tsunami harwarn has been issued for new guinea and the solomon islands. Speaking of earthquakes, Officials Say mexico city had 71 seconds of warning before yesterdays 7. 2 earthquake. Because of the early quake Warning System. Yesterdays temblor is one of several earthquakes to hit our side of the pacific rim in the past two weeks. It hit just off the Northern California coast on march 10, an 8. 2 quake off chile on april 2nd. And now a 7. 2 near acapulco. Whats going on here . Abc7 News Reporter david lui reports from the usgs headquarters in menlo park. The earthquake centered in acapulco was Strong Enough to cause the wall of a billing to collapse in mexico city. The latest reminder that the pacific is the most seismically active region in the world. The ring of fire stretches 25,000 fire from the South Pacific up to japan, across to north america and swinging past south america. It encompasses densely populated coastal areas. However, earthquake sterts at usgs say the faults along the mexican coast have been building up stress, but the temblors have not been extraordinary. These have not been very large earthquakes, theyve been a range of sizes. And the range of sizes and occurrences weve seen are what we would typically see over sort of this time span with variable, variations in activity that is pretty common. However, the pattern of earthquakes can be disturbing, weve seen the destruction in japan in 2011. Enter have been two in chile, magnitude 8. 2 and 6. 7 and a 5. 1 earthquake in Orange County last month. And the bay area sits on the ring of fire, too. The 1989 loma prieta earthquake set fires, damaged the bay bridge and created deep cracks in roads. Where the faults have more movement, we would expect more frequent large events on those faults. And so thats timically our plate boundaries such as the pacific ring of fire. Technology is making strides in predicting earthquakes. Including mexico city. And earthquake Warning System activated during a News Conference cal tech and pasadena. A similar system gave mexico residents enough time to take shelter. It gave the population of mexico city a more than 70 seconds warning before the strong shaking arrived. And it gave acapulco about 27 seconds warning. In menlo park, david lui, abc7 news. What began with the best of intentions has turned in a fight between a homeowner with chickens and marin county Neighborhood Association with rules against them. The birds or the 13,000 home. We wanted to build a nice coop. We didnt want to have a problem. Now andy, his wife tracy and most important, their daughter rainy, who has four chickens do have a problem. The one that is laying the egg is izzy. The black one is izzy. This one is felipe and this one is colette. The their Neighborhood Association has rules against barnyard pets. This board member says hes the designated chicken enforcers. They attract coyotes, they attract rodents, they make noise and the people didnt wish to have it. We tried really hard from the beginning to work with the community and figure out a good solution. And theyve stuck to their guns that chickens are not common pets. They really love me and i love them. And they really are my pets. As chicken coops go, its a megamansion. The Neighborhood Association unimpressed, however. It worries about barnyard pet proliferation. You allow chickens, you have goats. You have pigs, you have whatever. If the ccnr will said no chickens, then we wouldnt have chickens. But they said caged birds. Thats a cage and those are birds. So what began for the family as a lesson in sustainability and raising their own food has become a matter of fighting for ha they believe in now, to the end. The family has hired a lawyer.
