Now they have an exhibit that focuses more on how people feel, think and interact. Reporter dan ashley shows us an unusual exhibit on Mental Health. Step inside the changing face of what is normal. The core of the exhibition are these objects that were discovered in the attic of a men it will Health Facility in upstate new york. The objects are now on loan to the exploratorium in San Francisco, providing a rare glimpse into the lives of psychiatric patients over the last 100 years. These are the things patients brought with them to the Psychiatric Center and left behind when they moved or passed away. The staff would carefully pack up the belongings and store them in the attic. When the hospital finally closed in 1995, there were more than 400 suitcases and trunks there. Four employees volunteered, took their own time to wrap them up and turn them over to the new york state museum. Then a couple years ago, john launched a Kickstarter Campaign with an online video to raise money to photograph those objects. Its almost as if it were a time capsule that was put away and forgotten about. The campaign brought in 18,000. More than double johns goal. The photographs tell a story, both about the time that the patients lived and the things they chose to bring with them. Johns pictures are part of the exploratoriums exhibit. A box that was mailed to a patient at willard, and you can see its his wooden leg and some shoes and the leather strap that was used to attach the leg to his body. Karen miller is a psychiatrist who examined the items along with records. It includes her comparisons between how patients were treated at willard then and how they would likely be treated now. The owner of this trunk was a nurse, admitted in 1914 with a condition known asdy men shaw precox. She did not have a psychotic illness. She had severe depression and she recovered at willard, but she never left. She was admitted at about age 40 and she lived to 102. The team that created this exhibit told us the more they learned about the patients, the more they liked and identified with many of them. The team hopes the objects will help visitors relate to the mentally ill in a new way and take away some of the stigma. Really get people to understand that that is not a we situation, its really an us situation. That was dan ashley reporting. The exhibit will be at the exploratorium through next summer. They make new cartoons every day. We have a small team. We have a little writers room thats led by me and some of the other cofounders. Remember the writers room from Dick Van Dyke . After his monologue alan flogs his writer and kicks the dog. Here is the writers room for bit strips. Complete with comfy couches that they sent us from toronto. We just sit there and write the comics. We do it in stick figures. We have a stock of index cards. Eventually the index cards make it on to a giant wall, and if they are lucky, taken down and transformed into the full color cartoons you can add your own face to. Thats the hightech look. A lot of work went into it. It wasnt just about making the likeness of you, but it was about bringing emotion into about it and making it expressive. So here here is a sunny shot ths morning with the chilly temperatures, spare the air again today. The milder pattern as an offshore flow and a ridge of High Pressure to the east of us really gets underway tomorrow. Thats going to dominate our weather for the next couple of days. So with the poor air quality in the south bay, everyone else has medium air quality. So no woodburning today. The pacific satellite shows the doublebarrel High Pressure and the clockwise flow around the high, allowing for the easterly winds and it is not allowing the storm track to get anywhere near the bay area. So the dominant weather feature right here for the next several days. Then we will get an area of low pressure dropping to the south. It will influence our weather in terms of temperatures, maybe some cloud cover. But its a cutoff low and that will allow for the outlook to remain dry. It looks like we are going to stay that way into next week, as well. So as the highs climb the next up couple of days, the lows will not be as cold. Heres santa rosa for the week ahead.
