so, who told me this press conference should be happening shortly with new information. he was the one who confirmed seven people had died. that person was transported to the hospital in critical condition. he just shook his head, heartbreaking news to hear tonight. we were there as the suspect was taken into custody. . it happened around 50 to 100 feet from where we are standing. you are looking at video of the moments those officers had their guns drawn, saying, get out of the vehicle, get your hands up in the air. i was coming back from a community center where they were setting things up with the idea that they would come back and give us information. when i turned around the corner, my photographer was close to those officers. he was a matter of a few feet from those officers. they were arresting that suspect who got out of that suv. eventually they got him on the ground, handcuffed him, and took them away. we have been talking with witnesses who did not initially notice him sitting in that parking lot. it was not until a short time later that they noticed him inside that car. . they said he was just sitting there, nothing out of the ordinary. officers had been looking for a maroon suv, a marine lexus suv. that is the suv that the suspect was in when he was taken into custody. some very tense moments as those guns were drawn. after this happened, in a matter of 30 seconds, a minute or so, you had just dozens of officers making their way here. . they close off that parking lot, groped it off, and we should get new information within the next five to 10 minutes or so. now back to you. dan: thank you very much. we don't know why this man showed up at the substation, what the purpose was, was he about to turn himself in? more to come on the. ama: amanda del castillo live at the second scene. she is live with the latest. we don't have amanda now. i want to back to you that the president has been notified of the shooting in half moon bay. i believe -- we will get to gloria in a s there was a tweet that he has been briefed by the homeland security advisor on the mass shooting in san mateo, california. he has asked law enforcement to provide assistance to local authorities. as more details become available, the president will be updated. dan: and will no doubt make a statement. let's go to gloria rodriguez at the mountain mushroom farm, state highway 92. gloria: this is near the spanish town shops. i want to show you that they are starting to let the workers here leave the property. i did try to chat with a few of them, but they are not talking to the media. they are starting to let people leave. we know they had workers out here behind this crime tape for several hours. many of them were sitting back, they had talked to investigators, and now they are starting to let some of them go home. we saw a sheriff leaving here not long ago. the sheriff is going to be having a news conference not far from here at one of the substations. some of the activity starting to die down. as they are starting to let the workers leave, as we saw the sheriff leave, earlier we did see district attorney investigators out here. saw the coroner out here, and probably about a dozen or so sheriff's officials, police officers, police vehicles out here. you can see there are several of them that are out here right now. we saw a few different times where they took off with their sirens blaring, and shortly after that, we heard about one of the arrests that had taken place. we know the suspect says -- sources say the suspect worked at one of them mushroom farms, and all of the victims were coworkers. we know seven people are dead, one critical, 2 -- at two different locations. one of those locations where we are now, this is off state route 92, or san mateo road. . and then there is the other scene that is also here in half moon bay area, this is on highway one. we are working to get more information about exactly how many people at each scene. we hope the sheriff will answer some of those questions for us. out here, still heavy police presence, still some investigation going on. some people starting to leave this area. live in half moon bay, gloria rodriguez, abc 7 news. dan: thank you very much. ama: we now go to our dustin dorsey. he has been stationed at stanford hospital. actually, let's tear from the woman -- let's hear from the woman who was next to the suspect who was taken into custody. >> he got out of the car and eventually, he was taken down to the ground by them. >> did you see anyone else in the area? people who may have been working in the area? >> there was a photographer standing near me. other than not, there was not anyone. everyone has been told to go inside and shelter-in-place. a lot of people were not out. >> we were talking -- >> he seemed calm and quiet. ast he didn't react much when he was taken down. it all happened very calmly. >> we were talking a little while ago and we were discussing, they were looking for a maroon suv with a male in it. that is the arrest that was made, a male was in there. knowing the gravity of everything, what are your emotions now, knowing this is a person who could have possibly been involved in these other cases, having gotten caught that have not gotten confirmation but your thoughts? >> what i know, the reason i came down is because i'm part of the agricultural and food systems community in town. like the rest of the nation, is under a lot of pressure. these folks are under an intense amount of stress in their everyday lives coming from a multitude of directions. it results in incidents like this. i came down here to find out what i could about the situation and why this has happened. i did not expect to get that close to it, that was a little close for comfort. but it amazes under the stress and that it has come here into half moon bay. dan: a suspect that is now in custody, he is identified as 67-year-old zhao chunli, he resides in pescadero, arrested in the shooting deaths of seven people. he is the suspect of -- you just heard the woman talking about. who was right there as this -- as he was taken into custody. . this is video shot by our edgar terrien, our photographer and reporter j.r. stone. this is sex -- this is 67-year-old zhao chunli being thrown to the ground and arrested. he showed up in the maroon suv that they have been looking for at a police substation. sat there for a time and police ordered him out of the car. ama: we have been told the das office has no history with him that they know of at this point. that is the latest we are hearing from them on that. dan: as far as law enforcement is concerned, no track record with this person. we do believe he was connected to at least one of them mushroom farms where the shootings happened. our dustin dorsey is live at stanford medical center. three people are in critical condition and were taken to stanford. dustin: we are here on the campus of stanford university. just over my shoulder, you can see the emergency room at stanford medical center. around 4:30 this afternoon is when we saw the first helicopter, a chp helicopter, land on this helipad over top. that was about two hours. stephanie sierra reports the first calls for service for san mateo county sheriff came in around 2:20 this afternoon. around 4:30 is when we saw my photographer and i, saw the first helicopter land about 15, 20 minutes ago. we saw a stanford life flight helicopter land as well. other than that, we have not seen anything else. . it is unclear whether or not any of the injured people from the shooting were in either one of those helicopters. that is what we have seen at this time. there has not been any other emergency personnel or crews cruising around. all is calm at stanford. we have been talking to a number of different students and doctors and nurses that have been walking by, asking what we are doing here. when we have to let them know the unfortunate news that seven are dead, one critically injured, it hits home. they are hearing that this event -- ama: that was dustin -- dustin: and now we are seeing it happen right here. dan: have you seen any activity at all since you have been there of any significance? dustin: like i said, around 4:30 is when we saw the first chp helicopter come by. another shopper came by 20 minutes ago. no ambulances have been cruising through at this location. all has been calm. we imagine if any of the helicopter flights were bringing any of the injured victims, it was probably on that 4:30 arrival here at stanford medical center. dan: thank you very much, live from stanford tonight. ama: seven people dead, one person critical. initially we heard three. it is unclear if it went down to one because possibly those people did not survive, or if they found other victims at the scene. we do not have that information. dan: we don't and we hope to get it here soon, at least more information from authorities who have been telling us they are trying to hold a news conference. it gets pushed back, in the latest word was 6:00. at any moment, we hope to hear more directly from police as we continue to piece together the tragic events down in half-moon bay -- half moon bay. seven people killed at two different shooting locations. ama: we are hearing the suspect did have a connection to one of the farms, ri team has been digging into this. stephanie sierra is here on set because she is streaking track -- she is keeping track of everything. first we want to go back to amanda del castillo you who is on the second shooting scene. amanda: you heard from my colleague, gloria, a few minutes ago. she was at one mushroom farm. this is a second. we can't zoom in because it is too dark to see anything. but i mapped it out. we are less than three miles from where gloria is. that is about a six minute drive. straight shot here. what we are trying to figure out now is exactly what happened. i know that is information that family members are waiting for right now. i did connect with family as i got on scene, all of them on the phone, trying to make calls, trying to figure out what happened to a man who works here, their uncle, their brother who worked here for decades. and they are trying to figure out where he is. they have not heard from him. i connected with that family after 4:00. about one hour and a half after the first call came into sheriff's. what we do know is that family says other victims families are all meeting now, waiting to be briefed by the sheriff's office and officers about what happened today, and how their family members are doing. right now, we are standing on 2125 cabrillo hwy, we are wedged between a trucking company and a caltrans station. but it is really dark to see what is going down. there are plenty of sheriff patrol cars down there. we know the current 16 is on scene. we saw the county coroner's office about 20 minutes ago arrive. earlier today, we saw the sheriff's office was bringing in large lights. this investigation is going to continue into the night. one of those people who work impacted by this happens to be an uncle who has lived in the area, who has worked here quite some time. we spoke with that family, still waiting for those answers. we are going to continue to be in touch with that family. and also, trying to piece together what is going on, we want you to listen in. >> my dad got a cal this mushroom farm got shot up by someone or something. he basically left us, drover for here, he did not really explain what was going on. and we were all confused. and my mom gets a call from my dad. he is crying a little bit, saying my brother is in there. he has not been answering his calls. his brother is my own go. so we are just worried right now. he is not answering his calls or anything like that and not letting anyone go in or out. they are not telling us -- they know for sure it is three people in their. amanda: you said your uncle has worked here for decades. >> i would assume so, because my childhood best friend, he said that my uncle used to take him to school or bring him back from school. so i think has been here for a couple of decades. amanda: for people who aren't familiar, i know there is a mushroom farm back there, is it known pretty well through half moon bay? are people aware of the location? >> i don't think many people are aware of the location, i don't think so. it is at the road outside of half moon bay, so i don't think many people would know about it. i don't people know about the soil farm, but i don't think they know about the mushroom farm. >> difficult to imagine what that family is feeling at this moment, hours after those calls came into 911. we are going to stay on scene and monitor what is going on here. it does not seem like the family members have visited the from the other families. that person, carlos, set a the families are gathering at one location waiting on an update from officers. reporting live in half moon bay, amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. dan: abc 7 news i team reporter stephanie sierra has been digging into the background of the suspect, the person arrested. she is here with the latest that you have been able to find, you have been working to figure out what we know about this guy. stephanie: zhao chunli is living in pescadero, he has lived there for quite a while, property records show. from what we could tell from either location, he has worked in the farm industry for decades, as we have heard from some of his colleagues. of all the victims, right n comeau they were colleagues of zhao chunli. that was confirmed from investigators. whether or not he knew them to the extent he knew then, that is all unclear. we don't know which farm zhao chunli worked at. it could be he worked at both of them. . it is not unusual. especially in half moon bay. . this is a small knit community, as we all know. a lot of these workers, as we from, gentlemen that amanda del castillo io was interviewing, they have worked there for decades. this is a family. it is somewhat shocking. investigators i was on the phone with, about one hour ago, did say that they are still informing some of the families. this is certainly going to be a long process, as we can all understand. her breaking time for this community. dan: which would explain why we won't know yet who the victims are, until everyone has been notified. that takes some time. and probably authorities may not hold a news conference until family members have been notified. . it would stand to reason knowing the suspect in this case had a connection to the victims, in terms of being coworkers or colleagues, that he must've had a connection at both farms in some way. stephanie: yeah. and i think taking a step back, and thinking about how this started, we got the initial calls shortly after 3:30. the exact call that came in initially was around 2:20. it was much earlier. from what we heard from both the 911 call initially made, as well as from investigators, both the fire officials who responded on scene, as well as amr, this was half moon bay southern district that initially responded, they actually arrived on the scene and witnessed the suspect leaving. we don't know which location was the first location. that is still unclear. whatever one was, -- dan: in that maroon suv. stephanie: correct, they saw him there leaving. they are presuming he was headed to the second location at that point. certainly this is all developing. we are learning details minute by minute. it suggests it is not necessarily premeditated, but to the extent that he knew where he was going by the time officials got there. dan: there was a plan. ama: he is familiar with -- dan:, has amanda said it was a three mile drive between those locations. stephanie: this is a very short location in terms of the distance, and write off of highway one. it did not take him long to get to that second location. ama: and that whole area is farms, if you take 92 out there. dan: true. stephanie: we will keep you posted as we continue digging into this. dan: thanks very much. ama: earlier this evening, we spoke with san mateo county supervisor david canada, let's listen to what he had to say. >> in light of these mass shootings, we have to remain vigilant, it is shocking to see this happen. hopefully we can find, once the details are worked out, exactly what happened and why it happened. this is an active investigation. as you can imagine, with these situations, they are rather chaotic. let your sheriff's office, let the san mateo sheriff's office, work through the details of what happened. ama: were speaking to him earlier, before we knew more information, before we knew that we have seven people who are dead. dan: things have changed since we heard from him. let's go to j.r. stone. he is at the staging area. the police substation sheriff's office where the sheriff's office and half moon bay police department have staged, and also where the suspect was taken into custody right in front of jr. j.r.: yes, me and my photographer, edgar, out here. i want to update you on the press conference where we should be getting more information on what went down today in half moon bay. just talked with a deputy a while ago and he told me 20 to 30 minutes. 2230 minutes away from getting additional information. previously, 15 minutes ago, saw a group of around a dozen officers go inside the building. they are getting the presentation together. we should have information out here. what an arrest it was. what a takedown it was. i call it a takedown because it certainly was that. as i'm talking about this, i want to go to that video and what it looked like. i had been walking back from a community center. there were not many people in this parking lot. another woman was the next thing you know, they were surrounding a maroon suv. they were shouting for him to get out of the vehicle and put his hands up. he got out of that vehicle, they told him to get on the ground, and then they took him down on the ground. that is when they cuffed him and took him away. that happened in the period around two to three minutes, before i even walked away, i told my photographer they were looking for a maroon suv. they did not this parking lot. spoke with the witness, she was parked next to that suv. she said she did not notice the man until a short time later when she was walking back to his car. it was at that point those folks were telling her to move back and get away from the car. we do have an interview with her. this is what she had to say. let's go to that. >> the minute he got out of the car, and eventually, he was taken down to the ground by them. >> do you see anyone else in the area, people who may have been working in the area? there was a photographer standing near need. other than that, there was not anyone. everyone has been told to go inside and shelter-in-place, so a lot of people were not out. he seemed calm and quiet, just quiet, you know, he did not react much when he was taken down. it all happened very, yeah, calm ly. >> we were talking a little while ago. they were looking for a maroon suv with a male in it, and that was the arrest that was made, a male was in there. knowing the gravity of everything, what are your emotions now, knowing that this was a person who could have possibly been involved in these other cases? have not gotten any confirmation of that yet, but your thoughts? >> what i know, the reason i came down here tonight is because i am part of the agricultural and food systems community here in town, and like the rest of the nation, is under a lot of pressure, these folks are under an intense amount of stress in their everyday lives coming from a multitude of directions, and it results in incidents like this. and so i came down here to find out what i could about, like, the situation. i was not expecting to get that close to it. that was a little close to my comfort. but it amazes me that we are under this kind of stress. >> katie was 30 to 40 feet from where i was standing when that window. immediately when i walked back to the area, i thought, is my photographer ok? he looked down, he had taken a knee and was behind these officers who had their guns drawn. to make sure nothing happened at that point. they were able to take him into custody without an incident. and here we are. waiting to get more information on the circumstances of what happened, and how the different locations played into that today, and then what he was doing in that parking lot, or what that person was doing in the parking want. should have more information in the next 10 to 15 minutes. back to you. dan: that is what we expect. thank you. ama: we have learned president biden has been briefed on the shooting. is pressed secretary tweeted, the president has been briefed by the homeland security advisor. he has asked federal law enforcement to provide any necessary assistance to the local authorities. because more details become available, the president will be updated. dan: hunter gavin newsom tweeted about those shooting a short time ago tweeting, at the hospital meeting with victims of a mass shooting when i get pulled away to be briefed about another shooting, this time in half moon bay. tragedy upon tragedy. the governor was talking about this weekend's lunar new year shooting in monterey park where 11 people were killed. as we said earlier, our broadcasts tonight, we are going to be focused on that shooting in southern california. then suddenly, we are faced with another shooting closer to home. our attention has turned to this one. ama: both tragic. this one local. let's get to mountain mushroom farm, that is where gloria rodriguez has been stationed for the last couple of hours, one of the shooting scenes. gloria? gloria: that's right. so many wondering what the motive was here. we just don't have that answer yet. i want to show you where we are now. this is where the mountain mushroom farm is. this is off state route 92 here in half moon bay. it is dark out here. there is still plenty of police presence out here. there are probably at least a dozen sheriff's officials out here that are continuing the investigation. they did start to let some of the workers leave. there are a few that are out here now. but we started to see a few workers, presumably farmers, have started leaving this area. we saw the sheriff leave here earlier, and we saw district attorney investigators were out here as well. it has been a very busy day. we have some video we want to show you. we know sources are saying the suspect worked out -- worked at one of the mushroom farms and all of the victims were coworkers. we know seven are dead, one critical, at two locations. one of those where we are now, mountain mushroom farm, this is on state route 92. also known as san mateo road. information on exactly what is going on right now. investigation, we have been kept far from the workers. we have not been able to talk to anybody. we saw the sheriff leaving. not long ago, i tried to ask the sheriff some questions. dan: we expect more answers coming soon. thank you very much. ama: stephanie sierra has been here with us. . i saw you on the phone. stephanie: just trying to learn more about the timeline here. he confirmed the first shooting location took place at concord farms, close to rice truckee. we reported from the owners that the shooting did not take place there, but just adjacent. just to give our viewers context. that was the first shooting location. investigators confirmed that to us over the phone. the suspect went mushroom farm's. which we know is a few minutes away. dan: three miles away. stephanie: exactly. as far as his history, i just got briefed from a couple of detectives who were on scene earlier. they said as far as his record, no history of mental illness, that has not been flagged at this point. very early snow. dan: and no criminal record. stephanie: no criminal record that we are aware of. there was no warning signs or red flags in terms of the conversations investigators had with colleagues at both farms. no odd s dan: that he was upset or anything? we just don't know what it is yet. stephanie: as far as big warning signs, they did not report that today. they did not see that. ama: the investigation is just beginning. they will be speaking to people around where he lived. other people he knew. it will be interesting to find out what we know. dan: we are still waiting for an update from authorities a news conference that has been planned for sometime. we will bring that to you and we will keep you up to date. will keep you up to date. let's take a qui it's hard to explain what depression feels like. but i can tell you dead, 1% in critical condition. dan: originally it was three people in critical, now it is one person in critical condition at stanford medical center, which is where dustin dorsey is standing by with the latest. dustin: we have been here around 4:30 this afternoon. that is when we were able to see the first of only two choppers that landed here at the medical center. first calls coming in around 2:20 according to our stephanie sierra. we will take you to that video now, as we look at the chp helicopter flying in around 4:30 this afternoon. at that point, the information we had was that there was three people injured, in critical condition. that number has decreased to one. the number of people who have sadly passed away from this deadly shooting is seven people. we are talking to a lot of people that are walking by here on a relatively calm night at stanford medical center. this news coming as a major surprise to them, that this happened just 35 minutes west of here at half moon bay. that is coming after that deadly shootings we saw in southern california this weekend. a lot of somber feelings around here, unfortunately. other than that, it has been very calm. we have not seen any ambulances coming in, blaring their sirens at this time. just workers doing their normal thing in and out this evening. we will continue to monitor the situation. we have reached out to sanford -- stanford medical center. we have yet to hear any response from them. we are wondering what the latest is on these -- on the victim that we know is here at stanford medical center, and wishing the best for them. for now, we will. send it back lived to the studio. . dustin dorsey, abc 7 news. dan: thanks very much. it has been quiet ever since those additional initial helicopters arrived at stanford medical center, which is a premier -- the premier trauma center in the bay area. ama: let's get to amanda del castillo you, she is not one of those mushroom farms. i believe it is concord farms you are at. we have learned from stephanie sierra that that was the first location. amanda: this is the first shooting location, 2125 cabrillo hwy on highway one. i did map it out, compared to that second location. we are less than three miles away. a quick six minute drive. you can imagine how quickly this may have unfolded today. the sheriff's office have us at a distance. i want to zoom in to where the activity is going on down the road behind me. we have seen several sheriff's office patrol cars come in and out this evening in the last few hours. in the last hour, we saw the forensics lab arrived on scene, also the county coroner. we saw the sheriff's office bring in large lights to eliminate the scene as this -- to illuminate the scene. the sun was up, they got on scene as quickly as possible, but there is a lot to comb through. this being a mushroom farm. i did speak with a person who worked at the mushroom farm, when they arrived on scene, trying to make calls. trying to get information, anything that they can to put the pieces together about what will happen. they have not heard from their family member so we want to get straight to some sound from a relative that i spoke with so that you can hear how they are trying to get answers this afternoon. >> my dad got a call saying that the mushroom farm got shot up, and he basically left us, drove over here and he did not really explain what was going on, and we were all confused. and my mom gets a call from my dad. he is crying a little bit, saying, like, my brother is in there. he has not been answering his calls. so we are just waiting now. he is not answering his calls, and they are not letting anyone go in or out. they are also not telling us, like, who the deceased are. they know they are, like, three people that are pronounced dead. amanda: you said your uncle has worked here for decades. >> i would assume so, because much of the best friend, he said -- because my childhood best friend, he said that my local used taken to school or bring him back from school, basically, so i think he has been here for a couple of decades. amanda: for people who aren't familiar, i know there is a mushroom farm back there, is it pretty well known through half moon bay? are people aware of the location? >> i don't think many people are aware of the location, i don't think so. it is kind of tucked away. so i don't think many people would know about it. i don't people know about the soil farm, but i don't think they know about the mushroom farm. amanda: difficult to imagine what the family is feeling with little to no detail about the relative who worked here, or was working here at the time of the shooting. that relative, carlos, he tells me the families of all of the victims are meeting, waiting for an update from officers on what happened in the status of their family members. all of that coming in hours after this happened, seven people dead, one person in critical condition. reporting live in half moon bay, abc 7 news. ama: thank you so much. you are looking at a tweet from david canada who has a picture of the suspect who is 67-year-old zhao chunli. he was arrested on the scene. confirmed he was arrested, at least four people were killed, but that was sometime ago. i just want to let you know, a news release hit my inbox from the san mateo county sheriff's office. and speaking of the takedown which we will show you, because we have incredible video in just a moment. i want to give you the latest. this is from -- here is the takedown. they say that they identified him in his vehicle in the parking lot of the sheriff's office, half moon bay. he was taken into custody, as you see there, without incident. and they say a weapon was located in his vehicle. they say he is believed to have acted alone. there is no further threat to the community. police are saying this is a devastating tragedy for the community and the many families touched by this unspeakable act of violence, that is from the sheriff. they are asking anyone with information to give them a call as they try to figure out what led up to this. as amanda mentioned, the family reunification center, they talk about that, has set up at 735 main street in half moon bay. dan: key headline, no further danger to the community. suspect, this man, taken into custody. a weapon was found. stephanie sierra has been digging into his background, what we can find out about him. very early moments here as we try to piece together what we know about the suspect, but stephanie, we do know he has a connection to at least one of those farms. stephanie: right. zhao chunli, we know he is currently living in pescadero. he has done for quite a while. as far as the history with the farms, decades he has been working at either one of them, we are unclear at this point which one. it is likely he could be involved with both, as we mentioned early -- earlier. dan: not uncommon for people to work at different operations in the farming community. stephanie: absolutely. and our conversation with investigators, they made it clear that at this point, it seems as if there was some sort of argument. it is speculative at this point. it is too early in the investigation. but they have reason to believe in their conversations with colleagues that there was some argument, something happened for him to be at both of those locations today. the tragedy that unfolded in our community. what they can say is that the victims killed, all seven of those victims, they did work at one of those farms. it is unclear if there were three at one farm and four at another. but we do know at least they worked up one of the farms and they had some connection to him. whether he knew these people or has a long history with them. dan: gorgeous worked with them. dashboard just worked with them. stephanie: exactly. it could be that he just knew of them, something that was brought up in the column. this is early stages. but what we can say is that the response from the 911 response, they were there quickly. we do know the call that came in initially, 2:20 this afternoon, fast response. it was just seconds when they saw that marine lexus suv leave -- maroon lexus suv leave. we have just learned within the last 20 minutes that that started at concord farms, adjacent to rice trucking, right off highway one and half moon bay. very close. dan: that was the first shooting scene. stephanie: correct. dan: in the second shooting scene was mountain mushroom farm off state highway 92. as we have said, maybe three miles away or less. stephanie: exactly. we are learning more about the timeline. about 20 minutes, if not a few minutes, possibly 15, hopefully we will hear from the sheriff. dan: then after the second shooting scene, the suspect, 67-year-old zhao chunli, we believe proceeded to the staging area which was the police substation, sat in the car for some time. we have heard from a woman who was in the car next to him, when suddenly they ordered him out of the vehicle. he was in that maroon suv. we have shown you the video. we don't know if
