On this newscast. Also on abc7news. Com as well. For now, thank you for joining us. Now, to todays top investigators confirmed what our iteam reported last year. The massive loma fire did start at a marijuana grow operation. Investigators pin pointed the cause. A portable generator. Dan is here with all the information for us. Before the fire even started, neighbors complained to me about the marijuana grow, worrying about the fire danger. That came true in a devastating way. Cal fire now confirms what i reported just days after the loma fire started last september. That it originated in a marijuana grow on land owned by the ceo of a medical Marijuana Dispensary at the time. We determined the cause is from equipment, a generator or electrical cord in the vicinity of the generator. Reporter chief jim crawford said cal fire has forwarded its investigation to the Santa Clara County District Attorney for possible charges. Last year, i identified the pot farm where the fire started after speaking with residents, growers and this man who works in the marijuana industry. The locals know where it started. Where . At the bottom of the hill right here. Reporter a Facebook Live video pinpointed the spot. Carlos was driving his u. P. S. Route when he pulled over and recorded the beginning of the blaze. I got here before the firefighters. Reporter i took this strain from her video. Look at the two sticks. He was able to find the exact spot where carlos parked. I shot my own video of the area, sent sky7 overhead and identified the plot of land, the same property neighbors complained about the month before. They even sent this google earth image. Those houses survived the fire. A check of public records confirms an llc operated by 41yearold andre siegel purchased the property in 2015. At the time of the fire siegel was president president of green Acres Medical Marijuana Dispensary in santa cruz. Theres simply no evidence did anything wrong. Reporter i spoke to his attorney last year. He refused to comment. Sources familiar with the investigation now tell me the authorities came down hard on siegel. Executing a search warrant on the property, forcing him to tear out the greenhouses and remove rvs where workers were living because of alleged code violations. Cal fire tells the iteam the 11month investigation has been thorough. Theyve investigated numerous people, including the landowner. That information and all of that will be provided to the District Attorneys office as part of their case. A Law Enforcement source tells me since the loma fire, the Sheriffs Department has cracked down on the pot grows in the mountains. There are few on the Santa Clara County side. But the santa cruz hills are exploding with pot farms. Thank you so much, dan. Developing news now in the conflicted with north korea. President trump is not backing down and neither is kim jongun. Mr. Trump today met with Top National Security advisers, while north korea state media says a plan to fire four missiles near guam, home to two military bases, could be ready for review in days. Lets see what he does with guam. If he does something in guam, it will be an event the likes of which nobodys seen before, what will happen in north korea. California congresswoman barbara lee said the president is taking the wrong approach. We have to have direct talks and diplomacy to get north korea, and these kind of saber rattling comments lead farther from that. U. S. Defense Officials Say there are no indications of any imminent launch activity by north korea. While secretary of defense jim mattis said the u. S. Has a military solution already in place. Secretary mattis spoke to david louie just a short time ago during a visit to moffit field. Reporter dan and ama, of course, secretary mattis is not going to lay out exactly what the u. S. Military will do, if north korea initiates a strike. Instead, he is hoping there can be a diplomatic solution to avert what he calls a catastrophic war. Defense secretary james mattis said the u. S. Military is ready to take action if north korea launches an attack. But he says he backs efforts by the administration to seek a diplomatic solution. You can see the american effort is diplomatically led. It has diplomatic traction. I want to stay right there. Right now. The tragedy of war is well enough known, it doesnt need another characterization beyond the fact that it would be catastrophic. Reporter secretary mattis came to Silicon Valley today to show a support of technology to protect the country. And in his words, to make the military more lethal. The Defense Innovation unit started under the obama administration. It partners with the military. The sail drone is an example. Its also working with kapella space. The backpack size satellites can penetrate clouds and darkness which hampered technology. Theyre counting down the hours before their launch at years end. It may not be fast enough if north korea launches sooner. That shows where the Trump Administration goes, in terms of the prioritizing of the threat. But also, in how to deal with it in a diplomatically effective manner. Reporter david louie, abc 7 news. We have new details about a deadly plane crash.
