Were following developing news of a wreck that injured several people in san jose early this morning. That crash happened around 12 15 this morning on i280 near mclaughlin avenue. Highway patrol officers say four people had been taken to the hospital. Two have lifethreatening injuries. Investigators have determined there were multiple collisions involving five cars. Some pedestrians were also hit while helping with the crash. So far, its unclear whether drugs or alcohol played a role. This morning, the San Francisco marathon is under way. Runners are racing across the Golden Gate Bridge, and for the first time ever, northbound lanes of the span will be closed. Several city streets will be impacted as well. Here is a look at the race route in green. These roads will be closed from 7 00 this morning until noon today. The areas in pink show where traffic can cross but only when theres a break in the race. Abc7 reporter Alyssa Harrington has a preview. On your mark, get set, go. And move your car before it gets towed. Signs like this are posted all over San Francisco, to clear the course for the 40th annual San Francisco marathon. This year, more runners than ever are expected to attend. This is the biggest year, the biggest San Francisco marathon weve ever had. When the first one ran in 1977, we had just under 1,000 runners. Now we have 27,500 runners joining us plus all of our five events. To prepare, organized put up barriers, sponsors put up tenlts. Even if youre not running, road closures will impact traffic. For the first time ever, the Golden Gate Bridge will close all northbound lanes from 6 00 to 9 00 a. M. To let runners cross. This is for safety reasons and concerns following terror attacks in europe where drivers have intentionally hit crowds of people. Runner safety is our number one priority and spectator safety, of course, is our number one priority. Were working tirelessly year round and up and to and through race day to make sure were preparing. Before this race starts, organizers say theyre already preparing for next year. Alyssa harrington, abc7 news. Thousands of commuters are experiencing whats going to be a tough weekend routine for a while. Because San Franciscos muni metro subway is closed to test new trains. Abc7 news was at munis embarcadero station yesterday as passengers were forced upstairs to Market Street to catch shuttle buses. Those buses connect with light rail trains at west portal for the k, l, m, and t lines. And at Church Street and dubois avenue for the j and n. Riders are not happy about it. Im happy there will be new trains, but for 20 more days of this 30 days of this going on, ridiculous. Its been a frustrating kind of adventure with the whole thing. Well, youre now looking at one of the new trains being tested at west portal. Muni wants to make sure they work properly with the subways automatic control system. You could ride one of those new trains as early as september. Leaps forward in terms of re reliability. Great passenger information systems. Its exciting. Muni will close the subway during evenings after rush hour ends, and on weekends from now until midaugust. Authorities have recovered the body of a missing boater who vanished near tomales bay last week. Thats according to the family of 70yearold charles friend, the beloved and longtime owner of the tomales bay oyster company. Yesterday, the marin countsy sheriff recovered the body where friend disappeared tuesday. Colleagues reported him missing after they found his missing boat. Friend is remembered as a colorful, wellliked member of the tightknit tomales bay community. No signs of foul play in the death of actor john heard, according to a statement from the Santa Clara County medical examiners office. Heard died at a Palo Alto Hotel friday, where he was recovering from back surgery performed at stanford medical center. He is best known for his roles in the home alone movies and the sopranos. He was 71 years old. Hes survived by three children. Oakland police have not said if two recent robberies of film crews at gunpoint are linked. The first happened last monday. The second robbery happened friday. One of the victims describes what happened. I pulled the car inside of the vacant lot we were shooting in. At that point, two armed men crawled under a hole in the fence that was hidden behind a homeless mans encampment, and they chased after us barbarian style. Someone also broke into both the crews van and suv. The thieves ran off after the crews Security Guard drew his gun. They made off with about 25,000 worth of gear. Developing news from san jose, where police are looking for the person who fired a shot at a drivein Movie Theater last night. No one was hurt by the gunfire at the west wing capital 6 drivein. Police found a gun casing but no victim and no suspect. This morning, police in two east bay cities are investigating a series of smash and grab car thefts. 51 cars were broken into friday alone. Abc7 News Reporter Leslie Brinkley has the story from brentwood. The crime sprees started when 17 cars lined up near the front door of this hampton inn in brentwood had their passenger window s smashed some time befoe 3 00 a. M. Friday. James bennett found his truck and his daughters camaro were hit. They just smashed it open and took and opened these. They opened this. They opened this. And they absolutely, you know, they absolutely ransacked every bit of it. Okay. And when they couldnt find anything, they just went to the next car and did the same thing. A desk clerk heard a car alarm and called police. Unfortunate unfortunately, there were no surveillance cameras at all up at this hotel trained on the parking lot. Across the way is an auto supply store. Police intend to look at that video. Theyre getting what cash they can get. And then they steal the car. The lexus. Police say a 1999 fourdoor lexus with california license plate number 4jpx560 was stolen from a hotel and driven to livermore. By 4 30 a. M. , Livermore Police were inundated with 911 calls about car alarms going off in apartment complexes. They located between the three streets, we located a grand total of 34 vehicles that had been burglarized. All 34 breakins occurred in just 30 minutes, prompting livemer police to say theyre looking for an out of town crew of three to four suspects. Earlier this month, 13 cars were targeted on several san ramon culdesacs near interstate 680. Police offered a reminder. If there is anything in view, try to hide it, lock it up, bring it inside. Richard moss disappeared just before memorial day and a search for him is happening near montero state beach. Demonstrators were at the beach yesterday calling for more safety barriers along highway 1. Abc 7 News Reporter Cornell Bernard has our story from pacifica. This group of demonstrators standing along highway 1 near montero state beach was heart to miss, and that because the point. Just being out here today, we have a lot of visibility. This group led by dan moss wants more safety barriers built on this stretch, barriers which may have saved the life of richard moss, who vanished while driving to work on may 25th. His body was never found. A tire believed to be from his car was located off the side of this cliff last week. There could be 82 reasons why richards car crashed and went over the edge. I dont know what they are. It doesnt matter because if there was a barrier here, he would have had to get a new car, maybe go to the hospital, but the result is sdeth. She basically went over the cliff. 28yearold rose died one night last september when her car crashed off highway 1. I believe to a high extent her life could have been saved as well as richards. Glendas fiancee died on highway 1 in 2004, before the birth of their child. I feel like this is an issue thats going to be an issue until we sort of get a response from caltrans. Caltrans says its reviewing the matter. Not just a matter of we can go out and set up some barriers overnight with no preparation. Theres a lot, even with temporary barriers theres still some procedures you have to follow. Until permanent barriers are built, this group wants to see temprar guardrails put up as soon as possible. A california congressman broadened his experience working this weekend as a southwest baggage handler and a starbucks barista. He said its all part of the in your shoes initiative. Crews are starting to turn the corner on the largest wildfire in california. Just outside Yosemite National park. Containment at the Detwiler Fire is up to 40 this morning. Roughly 3,000 firefighters worked overnight to put a control line near coulterville. More evacuation orders were lifted yesterday. Reporter corey james from our sister station in fresno has the very latest from a Community Meeting for evacuees. Bottled water was passed out and fans were moving in the auditorium at mariposa high school, but the lack of water didnt bother the residents. They were hear to hear more about what happened to their town. Calfire had detailed maps pinpointing areas in the clear and areas that still need more work. I thought it was very informative. Suzette lives in mormon hills. She said in her lifetime, a wildfire here has never gotten this bad. I lived here in the telegraph fire, and this is huge. This is one for the record book. So far, the fastmoving blaze is 40 contained and burned more than 75,000 acres. Leaving many people like this woman returning to nothing but rubble and debris where her home once stat. Its responsible for destroying 60 homes and 63 other structures, but nancy, calfires unit chief for mariposa says it could have been a lot worse if it wasnt for the 500,000 pounds of retardant dropped in one day and the defensive space the neighbors created. It was a big help because the fire burned up to their homes but because they had great defensible space, the fire was able to lay down so firefighters could get in there. And knock that stuff down. And terry is grateful for the work the more than 4500 firefighters have been putting in because he says it has saved not only homes but also lives. Without them coming from all over the state, putting their lives on the line, saving our town, saving our homes, i mean, without that resource, we would not be standing here. Reporting in mariposa, corey james, abc7 news. Flames came very close to homes in San Bernardino county after a wildfire broke out in highland yesterday afternoon. Firefighters moved quickly both on the ground and in the air. They stopped that fire before it reached any structures. Another blaze broke out a few miles away. Firefighters faced 90 degree heat as they fought both fires. Investigators have not said what sparked the fires. A familiar face for giants fans has returned home. Pablo sandoval. Abc 7 news was at Municipal Stadium in san jose when fans cheered Pablo Sandoval as he went to bat for the first time for the Giants Minor League team. Sandoval, as you may know, left the giants for the red sox after the 2014 world series. One man calls himself a super fan of the panda, and hes willing to look past what happened a few years ago. We have breaking news out of texas this morning. Police in san antonio have found eight people dead in what theyre calling a Human Trafficking case. Investigators say the victims were in a tractor trailer parked in the stifling texas heat. Dozens of people rescued from the truck, including children, were severely dehydrated and have been hospitalized, some in critical condition. Police say the truck did not have air conditioning. The driver now in custody. Surveillance video shows other drivers picking up people from that truck overnight. The u. S. Department of Homeland Security is involved in the investigation. The nightly routine can take out anywhere from 30 to 300 scorpions a night. Volunteers have mapped areas that need to be tended to by the exterminators.
