They say he rammed into a patrol car during that pursuit. He also crashed into another vehicle and just kept on driving. The truck somehow became disabled and it rolled into the safeway parking lot here on Stevens Creek and stopped. Sometime during all of this, officers fired shots. Heres what a Police Sergeant told us a short time ago. Our officers attempted to make the car stop and take the suspect into custody. During that encounter, multiple officers fired at the suspect. He was struck at least once. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital and he is listed with lifethreatening injuries. Reporter as you heard, the Police Sergeant say multiple officers were involved. Were not sure exactly how many fired shots and how many shots really were fired. We know the truck from the video that we took from sky 7 as well as on the ground, its riddled with bullets and its wedged in between two patrol vehicles. Its unknown if the suspect had a weapon. We still arent even sure if they searched the vehicle but police were unable to really tell us what prompted them to shoot. They have a lot of investigating to do. Were told that no officers here were injured, but Stevens Creek boulevard here is going to be closed for the next several hours. They want people commuting to just completely avoid this area. When we were driving here to the scene, it was a complete traffic jam on all the surrounding streets. So try to stay away from here. Back to you. Janine, thanks so much. Freeway shootings are up around the bay area. This year alone there have been 19, two of them fatal. Tonight we have new information from the chp. Abc 7 News Reporter Laura Anthony is live in concord. Laura . Reporter kristen, most of the shootings over the past year or so here in the bay area have been here in contra costa county. Many of them right here on highway 4. Its a place where police and local leaders would love to put more cameras, but right now theres just not enough money. The level of violence on our freeways and highways is unacceptable. Reporter its a situation the chp says theyre trying desperately to get under control, a rash of highway shooting incidents, more than 80 in the past 15 months, some deadly. Like last weeks incident that killed 24yearold Demarcus Doss on interstate 80. Other involved bullet holes or shell casings left behind. But investigators say they are taking all of them seriously. These are often gang targeted incidents. They move from city streets, follow people up onto the freeway and its just an opportunity for them. Reporter this week 24yearold elliott John Henry Johnson was arraigned for murder in the death of doss. Two alleged accomplices, both 17yearold boys, could be tried as adults. Investigators say one of the teens was the shooter. All information that we have is the victim was in this case was absolute innocent victim. He was not had no gang affiliation and was completely innocent. Reporter last week on interstate 80 there were numerous witnesses, including an offduty police officer, who provided valuable information that allowed police to find a suspect vehicle and make arrests within 30 minutes. Next week local sheriffs are meeting with caltrans officials to discuss installing cameras along troubled stretches of freeway. A daylong protest is wrapping up at Napa High School. Students there walked out of class today joined by parents, angry over the expulsion of two Football Players accused of hazing. Reporter this is a student, dan, who told us at the time that he thought he was just engaging in innocent horseplay with his teammates. He said he trusted the school board and the district to do the right thing in exonerating him. He said now that in being expelled, they have ruined his reputation and perhaps his life. The judge said, quote, its important to me that white collar defendants believe if they act this way, they will suffer serious custodial sentences. A San Francisco jury handed a whistleblower a major victory today with a multimillion dollar verdict in a lawsuit against City Attorney dennis herrera. A 12person jury voted anonymously to award 2 million in back pay and damages. The lawyer was fired from her job in the City Attorneys office in retaliation for exposing a sewer scam that cost taxpayers more than 10 million. Pepper has fought for five years to clear her name. The jury came back unanimously believing that i had blown the whistle on the conduct. Dennis herrera issued a statement saying he is disappointed in the verdict. He takes his responsibility seriously and is exploring all options. Tonight the Palo Alto Unified School board has voted to rename two schools. Davis star Jordan Middle School and Terman Middle School were named after people. A seventh grader sparked a Grassroots Campaign to rename the schools. California has the sixth highest teen marriage rate in the united states. The bill needs to pass several hurdles before it becomes law. Well, now some state lawmakers fear california may some day face an attorney shortage because of the bar exam being too hard to pass. Right now only about 48 of Law School Graduates pass the California Bar exam. The heads of 20 law schools asked the state Supreme Court to lower the pass score to help the legal profession. The more lawyers we have, that means we have more lawyers in all of the positions that the breadth of the bar should be. So not just the high and corporate attorneys, but attorneys willing to do the pro bono work, really help the people that need access to the justice system.
