Reporter it did start out with good intentions. A caretaker in an apartment is going through a closet, he finds two artillery shells. He says, i wonder if theyre live. So, he brings them to the Police Station and that is how it all began. It was about 2 feet long, about maybe 4 inches in diameter. Reporter in fact, there were two artillery shells that looked very much like this. What had been a normal day in the Tenderloin Police station at jones and eddy changed quickly when the man who officers describe as a caretaker for an elderly man brought the shells downtown after finding them in an apartment. We left them in his vehicle and came into the station, told us that he had these two rounds in his car seat in front. Police responded by following protocol. They blocked the street and began evacuating four elderly hotels, including the hotel harold home for some 85 mostly nonenglish speaking people. They went door to door, seven floors, with help from the staff. Always very difficult because a lot of the senior disabled building. A lot of the seniors you see are in walkers or wheelchairs or Something Like that. So, a challenge. We were able to complee the challenge. The shooter, a father of a 4yearold, he and Three Friends left a Halloween Party at fort mason when they encountered lee. They say lee groped his girlfriend. The friends say that led to an altercation where lee grabbed a gun from his car and fired it, emptying the magazine. One of the rounds hit pessa. Lees Attorney Says his client was simply trying to protect himself against the group charging at him, hurling racial insults. He was acting in selfdefense against a hate crime assault. Reporter last april a trial ended with the a jury acquitting lee of most of the attempted murder charges, but they hung on the attempted murder and assault with a firearm charge related to pessa. Reporter sea worlds iconic shamoo show is no more. This weekend the San Diego Park debuting a new educational show called orca encounter which will replace what was one of its biggest attractions. It includes a film about the animals behavior. While they do breach and splash the audience, sea world says tricks are not the focus. Trainers no longer ride or swim with the killer whales. Its so important to educate people about these animals. Otherwise theyre not going to care to want to protects them. Reporter but so far sea worlds new show is getting mixed reviews. Some call it informative and poignant, others calling it boring saying it features little action using the orcas. Its the latest change at sea world. The park announcing last year it would no longer breed orcas following the protest. Following years of declining revenue, negative attendance and publicity due in part to the 2013 documentary black fish. It took a critical look at whales in captivity, specifically involved in three deaths including a trainer in 2010. That films director believes sea world has made some progress, but not enough. They are still swimming around in concrete tanks. My overall hope would be that sea world would just kind of embrace the opportunity to truly evolve and to retire these whales into sea side sanctuaries. Reporter the vast majority of parents know their childrens success depend on attending classes. There are a number of reasons why students dont. The principal in oakland can name a few. It aint relevant, dont care about it. Im bored, or im a failure. Reporter stress in the home in the neighborhood, alcoholism, drugs, even depression, are some of the factors. Oakland unified was one of the first in california to start collecting data on students who missed too many days. Why are kids missing school . Because regardless of the reason it impacts their academics. Reporter you added the why . The why factor. Reporter having that information led to outreach programs. Each school now has a team with an attendance manager. Each student is tracked. And so far oakland seems to be having some success. In 2009, when they began addressing the problem, 16 of students were chronically absent. Today its just over 11 . Page says its easy to see why students get discouraged. And eventually disengage and find someplace else to engage. There are other places in the world to engage. Most of them are outside of the School Building for a lot of kids. Reporter students at met west school say what theyre interested in and the school finds ways to supports them. Maurice rivas has an internship counseling younger students in oakland.
