San franciscos 911 Emergency Call Center needs more dispatchers and this issue became alarmingly apparent. Two weeks ago during a massive power outage that knocked out power to almost 90,000 people in San Francisco, it just overwhelmed the 911 system. Abc7 news anchor eric thomas live at the department of Emergency Management in San Francisco with a closer look at the problem. Eric . Reporter and, larry, 121 hard working 911 dispatchers work in that building behind me. It is not nearly enough. That is why a San Francisco supervisor plans to hold hearings on how many more they need and how soon they can get them. On a normal San Francisco day there just arent enough dispatchers here in the ops center to keep up with demand. The city has a goal of answering emergency 911 calls within ten seconds 90 of the time. We are woefully under that at 74 . We are under staffed at the moment. We are responding to that with a lot of overtime. But there are we are not currently meeting our service standards. Reporter that was apparent to everyone on april 21st when a fire at a pg e substation knocked out power to 88,000 customers in San Francisco. The call center was swamped to the point that 200 callers hung up while waiting for someone to answer. Supervisor peskin says here in earthquake country thats unacceptable. As far as our concerned our number one priority is making sure that our Emergency Call Center is fully staffed regardless of what amount of resource we have to put into it. Reporter on the day of the power outage, there should have been 14 dispatchers on duty, but only 12 actually were. To handle the huge increase in calls, 60 should have been called in, but only six came in. Officials say 40 more are in training right now, but its not realistic to think operators will be able to handle every call immediately in a major incident. Our goal is to answer calls in more normal settings and the normal spikes with the fire or car crash or Something Like that. And then respond to quick callback callers when Something Like this happens. Reporter supervisor peskin believes they need to hire 60 new dispatchers. He says the goal of the hearings will be to get everybody on the same page. In San Francisco, eric thomas, abc7 news.
