Reporter now, another surprising argument made in court by the feds, they said that legally San Francisco and Santa Clara Countys arent sanctuary jurisdictions yet because the executive order doesnt define what exactly that is. Thats despite the fact that in his speeches, the president and attorney general referred to sanctuary cities by name. San francisco and Santa Clara County. For the second time in five weeks a group that describes itself as pro trump is holding a rally in downtown berkeley. The last time back in march a similar event led to violent confrontations with counter demonstrators and ten arrests. Abc 7 News Reporter Laura Anthony is in berkeley civic park with the story. Laura. Reporter well, hi, dan. This park is all quiet now, but tomorrow it could be a different story. The Farmers Market has been canceled and the city is on high alert. It turned ugly in a matter of minutes last month at berkeley civic park when participants in a protrump rally clashed with a group of counter demonstrators. And now a similar event is set for saturday, same place, likely some of the same participants. Were going to make sure that we facilitate the expression of free speech in a peaceful way. Reporter a spokesman for the city of berkeley which had officers surrounding the park last time, but with very little direct intervention. People commit violent acts often do so under the cover of a peaceful crowd. So, what we want people to do who are coming for peaceful purposes is to separate themselves and not get provoked. Reporter some businesses like this Mechanics Bank are not taking any chances, boarding up ahead of time. The hope for us tomorrow is that this rally is obviously very peaceful, but its contained to the park and cooler heads prevail. Funny enough, im actually not a trump supporter. Reporter we couldnt reach rich black with the Group Liberty alliance. But we did talk with counter protesters. They support trumps hard line on immigration, but they want to take it much, much further including attack being our communities. Reporter in march police made ten arrests and shared photos of those they believe responsible for some of the violence. In berkeley, Laura Anthony abc 7 news. Police hope a 2,500 award will lead to an arrest of a man accused of sex crimes. He vanished in the middle of a trial last month. They released these pictures of the 36yearold chiropractor showing four different looks. Police say he failed to show up the last two days of his trial. He was found guilty of six felonies, six misdemeanors, and now there is a warrant for his arrest. In san mateo a court has just decided a man accused of killing a dog with boiling hot water will be able to live with pets as long as he doesnt care for them. He is out on bail after two felonies in the death of his girlfriends poodle mix. Last year the couple brought this dog to a clinic after claiming a cup of boiling water spilled onto the crate. They believe the dog was placed into burning hot liquid. The dog died from third degree burns. In san jose, a gas leak forced the evacuation of a building on park avenue near sunol street. Officials tell abc 7 news a propane tank was the source of a leak. The leak was capped and the all clear was given around 9 15 this morning. Lets turn your attention to the weather. A crews are working to clear mudslide blocking the eastbound lane along redwood road in the oakland hills. The slide covers about 40 feet of the roadway between sky line boulevard and pine hearst road. Officials have not said when the debris will be cleared. The park near livermore is identifiably set to reopen tomorrow after flood damage closed park for months. Rain flooded beaches, campground and picnic areas, Officials Say the glooding caused nearly 2 million in damage. Overall there was 10 million in damage to bay area parks. New details today about the passenger dragged off the United Airlines flight over the weekend. Oh, my god. It is that piece of video seen around the world and now where justice and Equality Group is accusing United Airlines of racial discrimination. The passenger is a vietnamese american doctor. Abc 7 reporter Lyanne Melendez is live with the story. Lyanne. Reporter well, you know, passengers lawyer was among the first to say that the incident was racially motivated. Others are also claiming the same. United has now responded to those allegations. China and most recently vietnam have now expressed their outrage over the video seen all over the world showing a passenger being forcefully dragged off the plane. Today frank lee of the organization for justice and equality based in the bay area followed by making this statement. We should boycott United Airlines to teach them a lesson. Reporter invited to the press conference was the San Francisco Community Empowerment center, another asian group that criticized united for its actions. Of. He is an asian and i feel that, you know, this is very suspicious that it might be racial discrimination. Reporter the passenger david dao is vit dynamically ease. While we still dont know the identities of the other three passengers who were asked to get off that flight, weve also learned a passenger on board a united flight from hawaii was asked to give up his seat and was mistreated. He is caucasian, which made this group of advocates back down. There is no conclusive evidence that this is a case of racial discrimination. Reporter instead, the group focused on demanding that united disclose its criteria for removing passengers, something the airline has never done. Edward has brook is an aviation expert who gave us an idea of who may get to stay and who gets bumped. The fare they paid and their status in the Airlines Frequent flyer program, but they dont say what weight would be given to those different factors. Reporter minority groups like these are asking the Airline Industry for more transparency. In San Francisco, Lyanne Melendez, abc 7 news. Well, meantime delta is taking drastic steps to avoid Something Like the united debacle happening on that carrier. The airline is giving airport employees permission to offer passengers up to almost 10,000 in compensation to give up their seats on overbooked flights. In an internal memo obtained by the associated press, delta says supervisors can offer up to 10 grand, thats up from about 1,300. Gate agents can offer up to 2,000. It looks like the eye card may not be too far down the road. An update shows apple received a permit to test selfdriving cars in california. It is the first confirmation they are working on developing an autonomous vehicle. Apple has what appears to be a mostly separate organization of a thousand employees, what it calls project tight an in sunnyvale and other satellite offices. 29 companies have been approved for testing the vehicles in california. And this comes just one day after General Motors announced plans to hire 1100 people to work at its new research and Development Facility in the bay area. The California Economic Development board has approved an 8 million tax credit for gm to expand the facility. Northern californias first femaleled mosque officially opened its doors to the public. This afternoon dozens of women and men attended this prayer ceremony to dedicate the mosque located at the star king school for the Ministry Part of graduate theological union. Today a federal judge heard motions from Santa Clara County and San Francisco for a preliminary injunction to President Trumps executive order that would deny federal funds to sanctuary jurisdictions. With just over a week to go before the french president ial election, the social media site is targeting 30,000 accounts spreading fake news or spam in france. Part of an effort to fight misinformation following the spread of fake news in the lead up to the 2016 u. S. President ial election, the first round of voting in france is set to take place on april 23rd. People in wisconsin say they are relieved by the arrest of a man suspected of making threats in a manifesto mailed to President Trump. Police captured joseph without incident this morning on farmland about 150 miles west of milwaukee. Authorities ordered a nationwide manhunt for him about a week ago. Tuesday when Authorities Say he stole 18 firearms from a gun store after mailing his threatening manifesto. He gave up peacefully. Again, there was an overwhelming force there. I think he understood what he was facing so he gave up peacefully. Authorities say the 161page manifesto showed his hatred for religion and a desire to carry out unspecified attacks. Local churches had been on heightened alert ahead of the easter services. Former new England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez was acquitted of double murder charges today as you see the former tight end wept after the forejury persona announced the verdict. First degree murder in Boston South End in 2012, the verdict came after six days of deliberations. Hernandez is already serving a life sentence for another murder in 2013. Six inmates in arkansas by the end of this month are moving forward. One execution planned for monday was stopped by the state Supreme Court just moments ago. It would be the most executions in one state in such a short period of time since the Death Penalty was reinstated back in 1976. Abc News Reporter has the latest on the controversy. We will have blood on our hands if the governor goes through with the executions. Reporter state Officials Say they expedited the execution time line because one of the three lethal injection drugs they plan to use is set to expire at the end of the month. I dont want to go back to these victims families and say were worried about how this looks and the speed of this. So, were not going to be able to carry out the will of the jury and the courts in the sentencing. Reporter but along with opposition to the Death Penalty, concerns are also being raised over the use of the drug thats nearing its expiration date. It is the same sedative that was used in several botched executions in other states. Effectively the drugs cause possible pain or torture and the person is totally [ inaudible ]. The problem is it has a history of not performing well. Reporter two drug manufacturers who claim the state obtained the drugs from unauthorized sellers filed suit trying to block the executions. They are awaiting a ruling with the first two convicted murderers scheduled to be put to death on monday. This will be the first inmates executed in arkansas since 2005. The fire was located on the roof of a building on the north side of the fountains if youre familiar with the property. Well, when you think of dominos as a game, but for a group of High School Students in san jose today, theyre Building Blocks for careers in engineering, math and science. The students set out today to set a new state record. Abc 7 News Reporter david louie shows us whether they succeedsed. Reporter you could feel the tension in the room as the deadline approached. Six High School Students spent three days setting up dominos and fine tuning Chain Reaction machines they engineered to set a new state record. The idea to challenge them and to inspire young visitors to the Childrens Discovery Museum of san jose. Over 25,000 dominos were set up in a space theme. Each one to be knocked over in a precise sequence. The students walked through the course in stocking feet to prevent an accident. Accidents do happen. I brushed one and that was on a crack and knocked over about 600. Reporter the Chain Reaction machines have to work every step along the way or doom them to failure. Sometimes it is failure because it is difficult 20678 small tricks and have each one of them work. Reporter at zero hour came the ultimate test. These two women that you see in these pictures, a mother and daughter, were leaving our lady of peace in santa clara with their loved ones when a car exiting northbound 101 near Great America parkway slammed into their car head on. Both ladies were in the back seat and died. Chp officers say the driver who hit them was driving drunk. The Coroners Office identified the women as 61yearold corina and her mother is identified as 91yearold angela both from san jose.
