The city of san jose is investigating Traffic Signals to potentially save lives. First responders struggled to reach emergencies in the required amount of time. This could change and make things better. Abc 7 reporter joins us live from San Jose City hall with this story. Jeannine. Reporter alma, fire engines and trucks and ambulances, they always have to deal with red lights and having to navigate through traffic. But this new technology will make the lights turn green for them. In an emergency, minutes and seconds count. In san jose, Fire Fighters are required to arrive in a emergency within 8 minutes 90 of the time. For the last several years the department has not been consistently meeting that goal. Right now 2 minutes are given to process the call, two minutes for getting into fire gear, and four minutes are used for travel time. We know that weve been saddled as the city grows and as traffic gets tougher, as the good sign is people are back to work and people are going to work. We see more cars on the road. That really impacts that ability for us to travel the distance we need to travel during those four minutes. City officials believe manipulating Traffic Signals will help emergency responders. Currently just onethird of the traffic lights use technology to turn red lights green for first responders. This afternoon the city Council Voted to go forward in upgrading the system so all traffic lights will be able to do that. What we want is preidentified for the fire truck to follow and signals that are in the way will be automatically preempted for the fire truck and surrounding traffic can move through the system. The upgrade will cost 600,000. They are encouraged the city is investing in the system. We anticipate sort of rough numbers when we look at it, if we save 30 seconds on travel on some of the longer responses, thats a Technology Change that will affect us and be change till the end of time for us. Reporter but the fire Department Says it wont solve the problem entirely. As the city grows in population, there will be a need to add more fire stations.
