Like those microscopic particles about 1 25 the size of a human hair. Particles that can lodge deep in your lungs. Dangerous pollutants to children, the elderly, people who work and play outside and many others. Anyone who has a respiratory condition like asthma copd, anything like that, or right now, the common cold. Hundreds gathered today to break ground on a project that promises to make getting from Southern California to Northern California faster than ever before. The ceremony in fresno marked the beginning of the high speed rail project. Governor jerry brown addressed the crowd talking about its benefits. He wants half of the States Energy production to be renewable by the year 2030. The governor said the 100 Renewable Energy rail system is critical to reaching that goal plus ridership will have other perks. Theres an amenity theres an efficiency theres a sustainability on the type of fuel. Then you can have a martini or whatever you people drink. At 200 miles an hour. There is opposition to this project. Many republicans are unhappy with the 68 billion price tag and farmers in the Central Valley dont want the train crossing through their fields. Reporter well, the gates are closed right now but we will take you inside to see whats going on. Architects call this the Grand Central station of the west. The 1. 9 billion transbay project. What theyre working on is part of our train box. Reporter we got a look at the progress being made on San Franciscos Transbay Transit Center. Work has been under way since the 2010 demolition of the old terminal. The new project is transforming four blocks south of market into a hub for the entire region. There is 11 different transit agencies from the east bay north bay up and down the peninsula. All the buses that come through the city will come through the transit center. On top of that, ultimately when phase two is built, cal train and high speed rail. Reporter the vision for the 68 billion rail line is to zip passengers between los angeles and San Francisco in three hours, with bay area stations including gilroy, san jose, millbrae and ending at San Franciscos new center. The ongoing construction here fascinates the south of market lunchtime crowd. They have been constructing for a long time now. Im very very excited to see it finished when it opens. Reporter the Transbay Transit Center is designed for 100,000 square feet of retail shops. The centerpiece will be a huge glass column and on top of the center, a 5. 4 acre public park. The project has created about 8400 jobs nationwide so far. About half of them here in the bay area. 18yearold derek turner is an apprentice carpenter from the redding area, proud to work on a landmark project. A hayward man tried to beat a train across the tracks this morning. Hes lucky he was able to drive away after the amtrak train hit the back of his car. Sky 7 hd captured the scene after the accident. Hayward firefighters say the man drove around the crossing arm that dropped to warn the train was approaching. At first the Fire Department couldnt find the car that was hit but they found it on pacific street. Train service was delayed by an hour and a half. The driver has been cited and his license suspended. Arson investigators in San Francisco are still trying to find the person who set a fire outside a popular tourist attraction known as the mrs. Reporter this house may be occupied by a man who has his own personal life, but to the world, this is the mrs. Doubtfire home and its part of the San Francisco sightseeing experience. Someone poured gasoline on the home last night and set it on fire. Police say it had nothing to do with the movie but the movies fans are horrified. I dont believe that. Police are looking into whether that person is responsible for the fire. The homeowner put the fire out. No one was hurt. This is what it looked like in august as it turned into a memorial for the actor. People in the neighborhood say they still feel sad and this arson just brings their emotions to the surface again. He is among only 24 pitchers to win 300 games, achieving that milestone with the giants in 2009. The search is over for a missing richmond teenager who vanished after leaving her home on new years day. Richmond police say the 16yearold Belinda Jean Carson was found in San Francisco last night. She is talking to investigators about what happened. No word on her condition. Police say carson has no history of being a runaway and may have been with a man who was refusing to allow her to go home. The manhattan man accused of killing his Hedge Fund Manager father is now being held without bail. He showed no emotion in Court Last Night when he pleaded not guilty to a murder charge. Thomas gilbert senior was found dead by his wife sunday with a single gunshot wound to the head. Police say the crime scene was staged intended to look like a suicide. Reports say the father and son had argued over a decrease in the 30yearolds allowance. Gilbert jr. Has had previous runins with the law. He is reportedly the prime suspect in an arson case that destroyed a South Hampton home back in september. In health news this afternoon, a nationwide study has good news for women undergoing test tube fertility procedures. Researchers say 12 years of data shows complications, including deaths are uncommon from procedures that include in vitro fertilization. The most common problems are related to drugs used to stimulate ovaries in preparation for ivf. Overstimulation is a risk and it occurred in 154 out of every 10,000 pregnancy attempts studied. The study is the first large scale effort to quantify risk for u. S. Patients undergoing these treatments. Startling new numbers from the cdc when it comes to alcohol poisoning. The agency says six people die every day due to too much drinking. The victims, mostly middleaged men, not teens or college kids. The cdc admits researchers thought the victims would be younger. Scientists at Oxford University have started the first human trial of a new ebola vaccine. They hope to vaccinate 72 healthy adults by the end of the month. This dry pattern will continue at least for the next several days as the jet stream as you can see is deflected well to our north, so thats not allowing any rainmaking systems to move directly towards the bay area. How about snow pack in the sierra . Across the entire mountain ranges of california. Statewide, we are at only 43 of normal snow pack levels ahead of where we were a year ago but that was a pathetic 18 . In the central sierra, only 39 of normal. We need a lot more snow to get us anywhere near normal levels. Back to the bay area tonight well have clear skies low temperatures mainly in the mid to upper 30s in inland locations, inland valleys then mid 40s right around the bay, upper 40s on the coast. Draped in a new york state flag, the three term governors casket was carried into a manhattan church. Current new York Governor Andrew Cuomo said his father was anything but a typical politician, describing him as a leader whose politics were part and parcel of his beliefs, not just strategies for pleasing people. He was well known in the surfing community. A paddleout will be held later this month to honor him. The case of a 17yearold girl being forced to receive chemotherapy goes before the Connecticut State Supreme Court on thursday. The justices will hear arguments on the socalled mature minor doctrine which allows a child who is deemed mature enough to make decisions for him or herself. The case centers around a 17yearold named cassandra who refused chemo for hodgkins lymphoma with her mothers support but the state stepped in and forced her to receive the treatment. Her Attorney Says the state is overstepping its bounds. This is not a negligent refusal to provide care. This is a choice. Cassandra and her mother are asking that that choice be respected. Cassandra underwent two chemotherapy treatments, then ran away from home and refused to continue treatments. She has been living at the Connecticut Childrens Medical Center and forced to undergo chemotherapy for about three weeks. Federal mediators have agreed to join labor talks that affect west coast ports including the port of oakland. Sky 7 hd shows the port earlier today. Labor negotiations between the Pacific Maritime association and the International Longshore and Warehouse Union have dragged on for months. The contract between the two sides expired in july. Money raised from the fees is added to all Staff Members paychecks. Tips traditionally just go to servers and bartenders. A New California law requires the terms of medical loans to be fully disclosed before a patient signs on the dotted line. Doctors may offer patients loans especially when medical procedures are not covered by insurance. Well, some of these loans must be paid in full before the procedure occurs. When the patient for whatever reason, doesnt go through with the procedure, some lenders have actually refused refunds. This legislation requires refunds for all procedures not completed along with full disclosure of all terms. It is sponsored by the Consumer Federation of california. No one should have to get medical treatment under Lending Conditions that are unfair. The legislation was introduced by Assembly Member Richard Bloom of santa monica. Two climbers are about 1500 feet away from making history at Yosemite National park. Kevin jorgensen and tomorrowmy caldwell woke up about 11000 feet above the park. They are attempting to free climb the largest single piece of granite in the world. They sleep in nylon tents suspended from a single point. That sounds like a good time. U. C. Has told big organizations that if you want to use water for landscaping purposes, you have to reduce consumption by 10 from october to june 2015. Now, since that mandate the San Francisco Unified School District has dropped its water consumption by 43 . A lot of the Water Conservation has taken place here in the gardens and other green areas at the schools within the district. Sam hartman has worked closely with students at San Franciscos lincoln high. When i came they had this wonderful system set up but it was leaking pretty bad. So we had to go through all the lines and one by one sort of check them out turn off valves where we needed to. Reporter lincoln and other high schools have also shortened the watering time for their football fields. The lead gardiner overseas the landscaping at all 135 schools in the district. Ran irrigation tests and readjusted heads, replaced heads, changed nozzles. Reporter the district also has these rain water cisterns at roughly 30 schools. The recent rains filled the cistern at jefferson elementary and the water is used for the garden. The district is doing more than just conserving water in their green areas. The students who are part of lincolns Green Academy have taken it one step further. Their job is to educate their peers and in the sense of Water Conservation, they have given presentations to grade level assemblies talking about how their actions matter. Reporter students are applying these conservation measures at home. At home, i try to take less or shorter showers than usual. I try not to keep the tap on when im brushing my teeth. Arrested by the chp many showed up for court today only to find out no charges have been filed. Abc 7 News Reporter Laura Anthony is live at chp headquarters in oakland to explain the legal limbo here. Reporter thats right. The arrest report for what has not been turned over yet to the d. A. s office so the delay actually starts here with the chp. They are the ones that made all those arrests last night last month, and some 100 protesters found out today the Police Reports are not finished not yet, which means the d. A. Cant file charges, not yet. It was the protest that blocked a major freeway interstate 80, for hours. The chp arrested more than 200 people on december 8th in berkeley and emeryville but a month later, virtually no charges have been filed. The number of people are here today who were called into court today do not have charges and do not even have a Police Report filed about them. The arrest was completely ridiculous. Reporter she was arrested that night and booked into the Alameda County jail in dublin, where she says she spent 16 hours. This morning, she was among 100 demonstrators who packed the courthouse hallway in oakland for a schedule hearing.
