Police arrest that had driver on charges of manslaughter and failing to yield. A bill to put kill switches on smart phones found new life in the california legislature. Today the state Senate Approved the controversial bill allowing owners to render the phone useless if its lost or stolen the bill was revised to exclude tablets and only include smart phones made after the year 2015. State senator leno expects to it sail through the state assembly. Apple dropped opposition. A lot of arguments still being made by remaining opposition just fall flat now. Two out of three robberies in San Francisco now involve a smart phone. A big supporter of the bill has been barred where passengers have been targeted. Abc7 news live now in a bart station with reaction. It wasnt too long ago bart warned drivers not to bring out cell phones on the train because it was becoming a problem. Today, bart was pleased with what happened in sacramento. And if this bill becomes law, bringing out a cell phone might not be that risky. Within hours of the state Senate Passage of the kill switch bill, city leaders were on steps of city hall. Applauding it. We have technology to basically disable them. Police estimate 75 of the robberies in oakland involve cell phones, crimes like these and sometimes turn violent. Over time, if the kill switch requirement becomes law, interim chief believes that number will decline. If we can make it a disincentive to take the cell phone there is a good likelihood of seeing a bigger reduction in the crimes a its going to be preenabled. A phone theft victim himself, he was a supporter. If muggers can and thieves realize all phones are going to have this there is no reason to steal them. They wont be able to get money. This is perhaps the last big campaign that the president will have, larry because if you have mid term elections coming up in november this is important for the president to gather money for the party to try to deliver that message and win congress and have a majority in the congress. I think its only 25 of the young people between 18, 29. 25 said theyre going to vote for the mid term election. So both parties have to be very concerned here. That is a staggering statist statistic. That says a lot about turn out for mid term election. So theyre anticipating 11point drop from the poll in november.
