C. , nbc 7 news. Larry, ama. Abc 7 news was all across the bay area today as people headed to the polls from Sonoma County to hayward to redwood city. Several local counties have reported all time high Voter Registration for this election. Most polling places will be open until 8 00 tonight. Some of the most experienced election day voters we found were up early this morning trying to beat the rush. I have voted in every election since i was 18. Ann was one of the first voters to cast a ballot in the bay area today, abc 7 news was in ross more as the polls opened. This walnut creek enclave usually has one of the highest voter turnouts in our area. Abc 7 news was in the south bay as people were heading to the polls in downtown san jose. This is at the first Emanuel Lutheran Church on south 3rd street. Officials in Santa Clara County believe today could break the all time voter turnout record, we are talking 3w8 6 set back in 2008, one voter we spoke with told us it was not easy preparing for the longest ballot in county history. It was stressful and so you have to make these decisions on these measures and read about it and it took me a week to make the decisions, you know. This is so important. And so many propositions on the ballot. Elections Officials Say theyve already started tabulating the early votes, should be ready to report the first results by the time the polls close at 8 00 tonight. Check out the huge crowd outside the registrar of Voters Office in san jose. They are actually going back into the building after being evacuated, a fire alarm sounded just after 11 00 this morning. Authorities gave the all clear just a few minutes later. The reason for the alarm, burnt toast somewhere in the building. Oh, wow. There was a new twist on voting today in contra costa counties, voters in martinez dropped off their ballots without getting out of their cars. A drivethru voting. Election officials created the special lane so people didnt have to stop and find parking. In Alameda County poll workers used suitcases to help collect ballots drivers dropped off. Abc 7 News ReporterLeslie Brinkley is live in oakland for that part of the story. Leslie. Reporter it seems like Alameda County voters are voting for convenience and, boy, today did they ever get it. This is one of these drive threw drop off ballot lanes, the first time oakland had done this for such a big election, its been very popular so far and there are so many ballots coming in by foot and by car its been challenging to keep up. These are Alameda Countys new ballot trollies, essentially yellow suitcases on wheels, the teams of workers are zipping around to move ballots, replacing old hard plastic bins, it was hard for some of those teams to keep up with all the ballots stuffed into new locked drop off containers located in downtown oakland and at 14 city halls. Our permanent vote by mail voters that registration has climbed to 63 of our registered voters. So were seeing people wanting the convenience of voting when and where they want to. Thank you so much. Reporter this drive by voting drop off point has also proved extremely popular. Of course, theres always the Old Fashioned way. Alameda county is expecting to break an all time voter turnout record tonight, a record that was set back in the 2008 president ial election when 78. 27 of voters registered voters, turned out to cast a ballot. Today it is expected to be even bigger. Reporting live in oakland, im Leslie Brinkley, abc 7 news. Uc berkley students were able to vote on campus. There were ballots and i voted stickers in several languages, many of the students told abc 7 news theyre freshman so just 18 years old voting in their very first president ial election. President ial candidate donald trump has questioned the integrity of the vote and today abc 7 news was in hercules where we caught up with some independent election monitors working to make sure everything is fair. This isnt the first year weve seen monitors at polling places in the bay area, these monitors working with bay area legal groups were mostly checking to make sure ballots were available in the languages needed. If you have any questions when you get to the polls today our 7 on your side hotline sun and running, weve been taking questions all day long from voters who want to know where they should vote and how they should sign their ballots. If you run into problems along the way we will look into and get answers for you, the number is 4159548151 and we will have people answering calls until the polls close in california at 8 00 tonight. One of the calls we received on the hotline led us to sun sunnyvale where voters names werent on the voter rosters and that led to major confusion. David louie live for us in that precinct it with what hes been able to find out. Reporter the confusion stems from the fact that the county board of registrars decided to do a well intended plan to sort of equalize a number of voters assigned to every precincts. Many of those voters in sunnyvale were not aware that their assignment changed so they showed up here as usual. When they arrived here at the plaza delray Mobile Home Park their names were not on the registrar of the voters roster list. They could either go to their newly assigned precinct or fill out a provisional pink ballot. Well, that led to delays and each more confusion. The very patient poll workers here did their best to minimize inconvenience and explain that their provisional ballots would still count once their registration was verified. And a provisional ballot counts and they have a number, a number and a phone number they can call in 24 days to be sure that their vote counted. This is taking you a lot longer to vote today . Oh, yeah, absolutely. I mean, its still worth t i not to vote, but its definitely taking longer than it should. Reporter alan lee says he never received notification about the change in precincts but he was very good natured about the longer than usual process. He was not going to walk away because he wants his vote to count, especially in this president ial election year. So whenever to balance precinct numbers to help everybody wait in shorter lines just didnt quite work out even though it was all well intended. Live in sunnyvale, david louie abc 7 news. As people headed to the polls some found themselves in rather unusual locations. Abc News Reporter vic lee is live in San Francisco with a closer look. Im at city hall not one of those unusual locations you mentioned, however, some might disagree with that. We did visit two polling places that were, well, sort of weird, sort of strange. One of the two most unique polling places in San Francisco and possibly the entire bay area is this one in glen park, it was at a garage of a home thats going through some kind of renovation. To accommodate the large number of people they had to take voting booths outside next to portapotties and bar damage cans but those voting here didnt seem to mind. This woman just wanted the election cycle to end. I want it over. End the misery. Were done. Everyone is sick of t the whole thing. Reporter the other strange polling place was at the San Francisco collin barium in the richland district, people voted in the rotunda next to the ashes of those cremated. It smells wonderful when you walk n they have incense, its very peaceful. Reporter well, another voter said that he was among friends, that it was a really nice quiet place. Not the kind of word one might describe, might use to describe the president ial elections and this is live tv at city hall. Back to you. All right. Vic, thank you so much.
