Day to go out and get a lot of exercise. And in the north bay, Sonoma County issued a Health Advisory because of the poor air quality. Check out the view of the Golden Gate Bridge in this live picture. The bridge pretty much disappearing into the haze there. And a similar story in the south bay this is the live view from our camera located at 87. You can see the sun is trying to come through there. Abc seven news meteorologist andy patel is here to explain whats going on. Sandhya. Yeah, we have wildfire smoke thats coming at us from the north and julian, as we take a look at the air quality, it just got worse in the last hour. You will notice it is red for San Francisco, oakland and san rafael. That is unhealthy. So you want to close your doors and windows if you do have ac, put it on recirculate. And dont forget about your pets. I do want to show you the smoke forecast as we are going to continue to see smoke impacting us going into tomorrow morning. It will get worse, as you will notice, at 7 a. M. And then the winds pick up. And as those winds pick up, that will mix out the atmosphere a little bit. So late tomorrow night, we do expect an improvement in the air quality. But until then, heres what were dealing with from our east bay hills camera. Its a very smoky, hazy sky. Air quality advisory through tomorrow, and that is due to the smoke from the oregon fire and also Northern California fires. So lets take a look at the visible satellite picture. It is very obvious to spot where that fire is in oregon and that smoke is just coming down the coast here. We also have another fire here in Northern California. And that smoke is coming in our direction. So if you are getting that scratchy throat burning eyes, youre not imagining things. And the visibility is poor because of the smoke. Sfo reporting visibility just over two miles, three miles in oakland here are our tower camera views and you can see just how bad it is right now. Were going to look ahead to fire danger. Ill be back with a fire weather watch and how long thats going to be in effect in just a minute. Julian okay. Thank you so much, sandhya. And of course, you can check out the air quality anytime by using our online interactive tracker. You can find it along with our full Weather Forecast right now on abc7 news. Com. Well, pgandes may need to shut off the power this week to reduce the risk of wildfires. As sandhya was just mentioning, a Public Safety power shut off is possible over the next two days. Only one bay area county could be affected. Thats napa, but only seven customers there. We should point out. Well keep an eye on the conditions. Ians over the next few days to see what changes, if anything. Activists are calling on the national naacp to take a hard look at the local Oakland Branch. They claim the oakland chapter is not aligned with the citys values. Abc7 News Reporter sara hassan has details. Former and current members of the oakland chapter of the naacp say its time to break the silence. The Oakland Branch is currently using its position to hijack the legacy of the Historic Organization and using it as a weapon, a weapon against their opposition. Doug blackshear is one of the signatories of a letter sent to the national naacp. President about the Oakland Branch. The letter states our leadership is reverting to lies, fear mongering and tough on crime rhetoric that is targeted africanamericans throughout our history in this country. Evoking stereotypical narratives of black criminality 400 years now we have our own people part of that. The group claims the oakland chapter is not representative of oaklands values or diversity, aligning itself instead with right wing interests over progressive causes. They point to the recall effort of Alameda CountyDistrict Attorney pamela price and supporting tax breaks that defund education in favor of tax breaks for big businesses. The naacp is a class organization, and thats really the problem. So we have come here today to demand that they make a reverse on all of their positions except for the bringing back of chief armstrong. The group singled out two men, former Alameda County assistant da terry wiley, who lost to da price and former Oakland City Council member lauren taylor, who lost to mayor shengtao. These people are the losers. They lost the elections and now they are running the local chapter. In a statement to abc seven news, terry wiley, who is a member of the oakland chapter of the naacp, writes, i have no comment to accusations that are intended to distract everyones attention from the rising number of retail thefts, robberies, carjackings, murderers, business closures and overall lawlessness that has everyone feeling unsafe in the city of oakland. The group is asking to work with the national naacp to make sure the oakland chapter is aligned with the national charter. The oakland chapter did not return requests for comment. In oakland on hassan, abc seven news. From the iteam tonight, a one on one interview with former police chief laurent armstrong. This conversation comes just one day after a report revealed he was falsely accused of misconduct. Abc7 news iteam reporter stephanie sierra joins us now with what he had to say. Steph. Yeah, it was interesting and revealing and i have to say the former chief was very candid with his reaction to all of this. He certainly is disappointed it took this long for the truth to come out. But hes looking to the future. And regardless of what happens, he made it clear oakland needs real leadership now more than ever. How are you feeling about everything . I feel good. I feel vindicated. And after everything thats happened, do you want to go back to opd . Well, i love the city of oakland and i love the Oakland Police department and the men and women that work at the Oakland Police department. And so i think everything is on the table. How is your relationship with mayor tao initially before all this happened . Initially, i thought we had a Good Relationship. Since this report has been released. Have you had any communication with the mayor . I havent spoken to the mayor directly, but my hope is that we sit down and have some discussion to figure out what the next steps are. What about your relationship with the federal monitor . Robert warshaw . Ive always had a Good Relationship with the federal monitor at any point with either of them. Did you get a feeling that something was off . Did they communicate to you that they were unhappy or was there ever a discussion that could have led you to believe this could happen . No, there was never a discussion. There was never a question. Things seemed very positive from both relationship tips. The report clearly states there is no evidence of systemic failures within opd. Do you think Robert Warshaw has a conflict of interest with city officials . No, i think that hes given his perspective on where the department is. I think its important for the city to also have a perspective on where the department is now. Hopefully this external, you know, review will help the city understand that the things that have been said about the department may not be as accurate as whats thought. I wanted to share a part of the statement from mayor tao in response to all of this. She wrote, quote, by immediately and prematurely standing up for himself personally, mr. Armstrong failed to stand up for accountability at opd. His conduct forced me to make one of the most difficult decisions i have ever had to make. I am proud that i, with the support of my administration , face the decision head on. Whats your reaction to that . For the mayor to think that any individual, particularly an africanamerican in america whos falsely accused of something, should not stand up for themselves is not realistic to me. Im hoping that were able to settle this, but this has had a Significant Impact on me as an individual, on my family, on my professional life, and my ability to go out and seek other employment. Right now, the Police Commission is in the process of vetting the top eight candidates to be oaklands next police chief. Three of those candidates will be sent directly to mayor tao. Now, i asked armstrong if he believes his name will be one of those three names, and he said, i look forward to whatever they forward over to the city. So well see what happens. And i do want to point out the commission was very clear. They are prioritizing their search to be a local candidate, someone whos very familiar with the city. Okay. Lets see what they turn up. Appreciate it. Thank you, steph. And you can get in touch with the abc7 news team by calling the number you see on your screen here or go to our website abc7 news. Com slash iteam. Political analyst jackie speier. Shes leaving her role with us for a return to public service. Ive decided to announce here on abc seven that im going to run for the board of supervisors in San Mateo County in whats called district one, which is going to be vacated by supervisor dave pine because as hes up against term limits, so. Wow. So im going back to my roots spear made the announcement on our 4 00 newscast saying there was a lot of work to do in San Mateo County. I want to make sure we do some really good things that relate to housing, making it affordable. All the middle class has been hollowed out of San Mateo County. Its just for the very poor and the rich. The richest county in california, but home to 27,000 kids in poverty. Spear retired from the house of representative house of represent earlier this year after serving seven terms in office as she worked as a political analyst here at abc seven news for the past eight months. A special day for our very own abc seven News Reporter. Loose pena. She just became a us citizen when she gave us a glimpse at her swearing in ceremony in San Francisco today. Or purpose of evasion. So help me god. So help me god. And thats it. Yeah. This has been a permanent us resident since she was 11 years old when she immigrated to the states with her parents from her native colombia. And i am a us citizen today. Finally i will get to vote. So excited. Yay and she did register to vote right after that ceremony. Luis, ever the journalist right there documenting the entire experience. Right. All right. Well, we are keeping a close eye on whats going on with the air outside. Yeah the haze, the smoke. A lot of concern out there. Were checking back in now with abc seven news meteorologist sandhya patel. Yeah and the smoky hazy conditions are going to last through tomorrow. Julianne and i do want to show you a live picture right now from our emeryville camera down town. Oakland barely visible with the smoke just right overhead. It is in the mid 60s in oakland, 63, San Francisco, san jose, 72 degrees and 61 in half. Moon bay. Hard to see from our sfo camera right now. It is so hazy. 70s for Santa Rosa Novato napa. Right now vacaville is at 80 degrees and low to mid 70s for concord and livermore on live doppler seven. We are seeing some low clouds just kind of regrouping near the coastline. As i show you the Wider Perspective here, that upper level low kept our temperatures below average for the most part, much of the last several days. And that pattern is going to stick around, even though the low is going to move out. This certainly providing the lift for those thunderstorms in the Sierra Nevada. So whats going to happen . That low starts to move on out as this trough develops to our north. Thats going to drop down into the great basin, but it will produce showers over the sierra and snow showers at the very highest elevations kick up our northerly winds, northeasterly winds that downslope wind is whats going to raise the fire danger. We have a fire weather watch that is up for the north bay hills tomorrow night at 11 p. M. It runs until 11 a. M. Thursday for Solano County until 6 p. M. Thursday. But this covers not just the north bay hills and Solano County, but lake county as well. A gusty winds up to 35 miles an hour. Humidity 25 to 30. Any new fires that do develop will rapidly grow and spread. So that is the concern. Something to keep an eye on as we go hour by hour, you will notice those winds ramping up as we head towards midnight thursday, 34 miles an hour. This is a very drying wind. Thursday morning is still gusty across the region. So thats when our greatest fire danger will be. You will notice it goes up to moderate category tomorrow afternoon in the north and the east bay. Parts of the hills and the peninsula. And then we go into the high to very high category for parts of the north bay mountains. So thats why there is a concern on thursday morning of that fire danger, wednesday night into thursday morning, Golden Gate Bridge camera. Hard to make out whether its smoke or low clouds, but its certainly a combination, an smoky and hazy skies tonight and tomorrow, gusty in the hills and higher fire danger. Wednesday night into thursday, autumn arrives on friday at 1150 at night. And theres no real sign of heat in the forecast as we go hour by hour tomorrow morning, we will see some areas of low clouds and then the winds will pick up and the clouds will clear away. So we will be in for a sunny wednesday. But those temperatures still a little behind where they should be for this time of year, mid 50s to low 60s out the door tomorrow morning. Do expect the smoky, hazy conditions to stick around tomorrow afternoon as well. Low 80s inland, mid 60s coast even though the sun will be out, its going to be very hazy with the visibility poor at times. Accuweather seven day forecast those temperatures in the low to mid 80s next several days. The weekend is included even though the season changes on friday, theres no real sign of the season change other than the gusty winds in the hills. Were expecting 60s coast side clouds will increase on monday and we are anticipating the possibility of some showers on tuesday, believe it or not. I know it sounds crazy, julian and alma, but we may need those umbrellas as early as tuesday. All right. Well take the rain. Appreciate it. Thanks sandhya. Well, abc seven today held its annual operation save a life event at fire station four in San Francisco. Fire departments from across the bay area were there to increase Public Awareness of fire and Carbon Monoxide safety partnerships with the home depot and keta have helped provide more than 45,000 free smoke alarms in more than 5000 co alarms in the bay area today. Abc seven news anchor karina nova and abc sevens general manager Tom Zebrowski took part in this event, helping announce another big donation from quita. We see that Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide detectors save lives. The gift that was given to us by quita, home depot and in partnership with abc seven is the gift of life. Its imperative that people get these for their occupancies for their residents. And yes, now theres no excuse for the children taking that few extra minutes when the time changes to replace batteries or not to put it off. When the you know, the Smoke Detector has been taken down, especially when its being done, because maybe it sounded too much during a cooking problem. Its really important to make sure that you do that because when its time, theres really no Second Chance. And because of that donation, you can check with your local Fire Department to get a free smoke or Carbon Monoxide alarm. If you think youve spotted more graffiti and tagging in San Francisco lately, youre not imagining things. Apparently the problem has gotten worse. Graffiti, of course is illegal and for a city that is trying to improve its image, its going to take more than enforcement by police. Abc7 News Reporter leanne melendez looks at what can be done to clean up the city and build a better bay area. They went over this and this side of saguaro cervantez is a Mission District muralist whose work got tagged a few times as he was prepping. So, you know who it was . Who it was . Yeah. Have you ever reported it to police . No. No need. Because once word got out that it was cervantes who was painting the mural, it became off limits to any tagger. The ones that just scribbled and tagged for the hell of it. Those are the ones that are a problem some call it infringing to impress us. Carlos gonzalez is also a muralist and a former probation officer. Theres a bunch of knuckleheads who just dont care whatever this sign or name is typically only known to them. And while you might think that this is an eyesore, if enough people start recognizing this moniker in their minds, they have achieved some kind of notoriety, 880 or fame, especially after covid. I think a lot. I think theres like kind of like a like a loss of respect. How did things get so bad for one ding covid, the board of supervisors paused any kind of graffiti removal in enforcement. And so when we had more than a year of not going to enforce it, if we didnt have that stick with the carrot and stick. Sometimes people would just let it sit on their building. And then youre right, more tags will come. Another, another, another. Property owners are the ones who have to pay to paint over the graffiti. This is a exit, so you cant just you cant just remove it. You have to replace the glass. Its almost like a cat and mouse game. Exactly where they tag it. You paint over it, they come. How much does it cost you . So the small glass like this one, just the square right here. If im going to replace it, its a 300. Police use Surveillance Video to help connect the tagger with his moniker and try to build a case from there. They also catch a few taggers in the act personally for graffiti tagging. Ive written ive written a handful of arrest warrants based on about their aggregate numbers. I would say thats thats roughly not too many. Well, as a police department, our aggregate numbers between 60 or 70 people at this point for the year its especially challenging since the department has a severe shortage of officers. I think it speaks to the good work of our officers because even under these demands, were still arresting people, defacing someones property with graffiti is a felony. With a person facing jail time and a fine. About a year ago, public works introduced a Pilot Program to remove and paint over public areas that affect small businesses. At no cost to them. But they never anticipated getting so many calls to the 311 Customer Service center. Where were really seeing a difference are the requests that are coming in for graffiti on private property, and thats up almost 74. So a really big spike there. Graffiti and the act of tagging will never completely go away. But city officials insist there are ways to curtail it through community involvement. Public works for example, offers several volunteer programs to clean up neighborhoods, and another idea is to encourage encourage those who tag to express their art in designated public spaces. Cervantes was once a tagger who found a more creative and meaningful way to express his art. Its nice to discover something where you can point somebody in the right direction, and then later on in life, theres successful artists in San Francisco. Leon melendez, abc seven news security and safety improved around San Franciscos Moscone Center during the salesforce conference. Dreamforce today, the mayor joined us live on getting answers to discuss the challenges of making that change permanent. Our teams are out there working really hard to try and get people into treatment. We just got to keep at it. We got to be as aggressive as possible and we dont need obstructionists and people who are pushing back against what were trying to do. This is not homeless sweeps. This is homeless. Help this is trying to get people into help. The mayor, london breed says one obstacle, the city is facing is the federal injunction that puts restrictions on clearing those homeless encampments. You can watch interviews like this one every weekday. When you watch getting answers at 3 p. M. Right here on abc7. And wherever you stream. Today, a nationwide push got underway to get more people registered to vote. The reality is not enough people are registering for and then voting in elections. Abc seven news south bay reporter zach fuentes has more on the work being done to increase voter turnout. The setup is underway in Santa Clara County for one of many events being held across the country to get more people to use their voice. Today is National Voter registration day across america. Everyone is registering as many people as they can to vote. The 2024 general election is more than a year away. Primary and special elections are happening even sooner. Nationally and locally. Candidate filing started already for the march, so its important to be out there making making sure that everyone you know, is registered experts say registering people to vote is only part of the battle in increasing election participation in getting registered voters to turn out is another challenge in the november 2022 general election, 50. 7 of registered voters participated statewide. Outside the primaries in june of 2022, saw 33. 1 turnout. Think the United States suffers from voter fatigue when it which means that it seems like were always voting for everything going all the time and the result of that is that the smaller elections, local elections, state elections, primary elections tend to have lower turnout. Csu, east bay associate Political Science professor dan lee says theres even more reasons that keep turnout low, especially among certain communities. Historically, minorities and youth have not been mobilized to vote to turn out to vote. Theres been a great push for these communities to be registered to vote, but that registration isnt enough and we need to do more in order to get them to actually show up to the ballot box or to turn in their voter, their voter form. The Santa Clara CountyRegistrars Office says work is being done to make that happen, not just by the county, but community groups. Over 19 organizations all around the county that are coming. League of women voters, sdsu votes, all different kinds of organizations in the area registering to vote can be done online at any post office or any Government Agency that has Voter Registration cards in order to really have a truly representative democracy. Everyone who is eligible should register and turn out in the south bay. Zach fuentes, abc seven news. A womans bank account is debited 5,000 and when she complains adds another 5,000 goes missing.
